Maharashtra, Mumbai get new police chiefs

Mumbai, Feb 28 (IANS) Senior IPS officers Subodh Kumar Jaiswal and Sanjay Barve took over as the new Director-General of Maharashtra and Commissioner of Police Mumbai, respectively, here on Thursday, an official said.

Barve replaced Jaiswal, who has been promoted, and took charge from DGP Dattatray Padsalgikar, who retired on Thursday.

 

In view of the prevailing security scenario and the upcoming elections in the country, both Barve and Jaiswal assumed charge immediately after their appointment orders were issued by the Home Department.

A 1987 batch IPS officer, Barve (57) was Deputy General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau, till now. He has earlier served as Additional Police Commissioner Mumbai besides other top posts in the state and city police.

Jaiswal (55) is a 1985 batch IPS officer, who served for nine years in the Research & Analysis Wing, where he was promoted to Additional Secretary.

He was appointed as Mumbai police chief in August 2018 and has now been elevated as the state police head.

Shortly after taking over as the new city police commissioner, which is equivalent to the rank of DGP, Barve said that his priorities would be curbing crime, including cyber frauds and economic offences, in Mumbai.
