UNSC renews sanctions against Yemen

United Nations, Feb 27 (IANS) The UN Security Council authorized a one-year extension of the financial and travel bans that have been in place since February 2014 against individuals or entities threatening the peace, security and stability of Yemen.

Resolution 2456, unanimously adopted by the 15-member organ, decided that the situation in Yemen continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security, Xinhua news agency reported.

The resolution also reaffirmed the provisions on an arms embargo imposed in April 2015 against the Houthi rebel group and forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, and his son Ahmed Ali Saleh.

According to the sanctions, established in resolution 2140 in February 2014, all member states shall freeze all funds, other financial assets and economic resources on their territories, which are owned or controlled directly or indirectly by the individuals or entities designated by the sanctions committee.

Under the resolution 2140, a UN sanctions committee for Yemen has been formed to report and decide on transition spoilers.

By other terms of the resolution 2456, the council extended until March 28, 2020 the mandate of the panel of experts supporting the 2140 sanctions committee.
