Rajnath urges peace in Arunachal Pradesh in PRC row

New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) In the wake of the ongoing protests in some parts of Arunachal Pradesh against the proposal to grant permanent resident certificates (PRC) to six tribal communities, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday appealed the people to remain calm and maintain peace.

The Minister also took stock of the situation during a telephonic conversation with Chief Minister Prema Khandu.

"HM Shri @rajnathsingh spoke to the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Shri @PemaKhanduBJP over the phone and discussed the prevailing situation and ongoing protest in certain parts of the state. HM has urged the people to remain calm and maintain peace in the state," the Home Ministry tweeted.

People in parts of Arunachal Pradesh have been protesting against the state government's announcment that it was considering issuing PRC to six non-Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe communities living in Namsai and Changlang districts.

These six communities are Deoris, Sonowal Kacharis, Morans, Adivasis, Mishings and Gorkhas. Most of them are recognised as Scheduled Tribes in neighbouring Assam.
