Morocco arrests Spanish-Swiss dual citizen in tourists’ murder

Morocco arrests Spanish-Swiss dual citizen in tourists' murderMadrid, Dec 30 (IANS) The man detained Saturday in Morocco for his suspected connection with the men arrested for murdering two Scandinavian tourists is a Spanish-Swiss dual citizen with a Spanish passport, sources in the Spanish Foreign Ministry told Efe.

Morocco's Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) said in a statement that the detention was made in Marrakech, and the suspect, whose name has not been revealed, is someone who was "radicalized" into following a violent ideology.

For that reason the Moroccan police reported his detention to the Spanish Consulate in Casablanca, which is providing the usual consular assistance to a Spanish national under arrest, consulate sources said.

The BCIJ, basically an anti-terrorism unit, also said the detainee "trained the other suspects to use state-of-the art communication technologies" and also taught them to handle weapons, reports Efe.

This new suspect is also said to have taken part in recruiting Moroccan citizens and sub-Saharan migrants to commit terrorist attacks in Morocco against foreign interests.

Authorities arrested several days ago the four suspected terrorists who perpetrated the mid-December murders of the two Scandinavian tourists, and who made a video in which they appear to pledge their loyalty to the Islamic State (IS).

The person taken into custody this Saturday, who is added to the 19 Moroccans already arrested in the case, also planned to organise attacks against security forces to steal their weapons.
