Rainy Monday for Kolkata as cyclone hits Andhra

Kolkata, Dec 17 (IANS) Kolkata and several other districts of Gangetic West Bengal woke up to a rainy morning on Monday as cyclone 'Phethai' made landfall in Andhra Pradesh.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of Kolkata said that 'Phethai', which intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, gradually weakened into a cyclonic storm on Monday morning.

 

"Due to unfavourable environmental conditions, it is likely to slightly weaken further before landfall and cross the coast as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph," a bulletin said.

Heavy rainfall was on the cards for one or two places of East and West Midnapur, Jhargram, Bankura, East Burdwan, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah and Hooghly districts.

The districts of Gangetic West Bengal will get rainfall on Tuesday as well.

Gale wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph prevails over west-central Bay of Bengal around the system centre and was very likely to become 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during the next 12 hours.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea over North West Bay of Bengal for the next two days.

Kolkata witnessed a cloudy sky with a few spells of light to moderate rain with 2.2 mm rainfall.
