Kolkata, Oct 29 (IANS) Recreating a Roman bread which was popular in the city of Pompeii almost 2,000 years ago, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group's Spencer's Retail on Monday introduced the new product in the city.

It's available at its Park Street outlet and will be introduced in its 30 other stores in the city from Tuesday, a spokesperson said.

"All over the western world, there is an unending inquisitiveness about carbonised loaves that were excavated from Pompeii many years ago," says the company's Business Head (East) Kaushik Ganguly adding that the company's bakers would offer a similar bread to customers.

Bread was the backbone of Pompeii's daily diet and 35 bakeries, requiring large quantities of grain, firewood, and labour, fed the 12,000 citizens of the ill-fated city, according to Ganguly. Pompeii was destroyed after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D.
