March domestic passenger car sales up 0.44%: SIAMNew Delhi, April 10 (IANS) Sales of domestic passenger cars inched up in March, data showed on Tuesday.

As per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), 191,082 passenger cars were sold in March -- up from 190,236 units off-take in March 2017.

The off-take of other sub-segments of passenger vehicle category such as utility vehicles edged still higher to 17.74 per cent during the month to 91,483 units, while the sales of vans increased by 22.97 per cent to 18,157 units.

 

Consequently, the overall domestic passenger vehicle sales rose by 6.38 per cent in March to 300,722 units from 282,698 units sold during the corresponding period in 2017.

Similarly, the industry data revealed that sales of overall commercial vehicles zoomed by 24.55 per cent to 108,681 units in March. The segment is a key indicator of economic activity.

Sales of three-wheelers accelerated by 85.81 per cent to 72,465 units during the month.

In addition, overall sales of two-wheelers, which include scooters, motorcycles and mopeds, climbed by 18.35 per cent to 1,741,649 units.

According to the data, total sales of the Indian automobile sector rose by 18.23 per cent during March 2018 to 2,223,517 units across segments and categories.

The overall exports of vehicles across categories also edged higher by 19.52 per cent to 364,199 units last month.

In terms of financial year 2017-18, the domestic passenger cars sales rose by 3.3 per cent to 2,173,950 units, while that of utility vehicles surged by 20.97 per cent to 921,780 units. Sale of vans increased by 5.78 per cent to 192,235 units.

This led the overall domestic passenger vehicle segment sales to rise by 7.89 per cent in April-March 2017-18 period to 3,287,965 units.

The industry data showed that sales of domestic commercial vehicles zoomed by 19.94 per cent to 856,453 units in the last financial year.

Besides, three-wheeler segment's sales accelerated by 24.19 per cent to 635,698 units during the period.

Further, the overall sales of two-wheelers climbed by 14.80 per cent to 20,192,672 units.

SIAM reported that the Indian automobile sector reported an increase of 14.22 per cent during April-March -- with total sales at 24,972,788 units across segments and categories.

The overall exports across categories edged higher by 16.12 per cent to 4,041,777 units last fiscal.
