Congress approaches EC over voters list ‘discrepancies’ in MP

Congress approaches EC over voters list 'discrepancies' in MPNew Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) The Congress on Monday approached the Election Commission to complain of "massive discrepancies" in the voters list ahead of the two assembly bypolls in Madhya Pradesh, accusing the state's BJP government of "conspiring to murder democracy".

The party delegation, which included party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, Mohan Prakash, R.P.N Singh and others, said that the Election Commission promised appropriate action.

Briefing media persons after the meeting, Surjewala said that the delegation raised several important issues pertaining to the two assembly bypolls in Madhya Pradesh - Mungaoli and Kolaras.

"The Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government is hatching a conspiracy for murdering democracy. The manner in which they are putting pressure on the voters and influencing them... The Chief Minister is rattled," he added.

"There are massive discrepancies in voter list. We met the EC over this with proof," Surjewala also said.

"We raised four important points. First, the voter list of both the state assemblies. The list of Kolaras assembly was furnished in a CD and the list of the other was never provided by the state election commission and the government.

"When the list was analysed it was seen that there were about 20,000 fake entries, in which one voter had votes in five different booths," he added.

"If you analyse the list, you will see the photo of one voter is there against 20 individuals. So, that all the 20 voters get deprived of casting their votes. Such kind of discrepancies are there...."

He said that when Congress leaders including Jyotiraditya Scindia lodged their complaint with the EC, then many officials had to be suspended and 1,800 such entries were even deleted, "but this is a discrepancy of 20,000 votes."

He said that the Election Commission has issued notice to a minister, who threatened that if people don't give votes to BJP, then the work of development in the area will be stopped but the government has already given him a clean chit.

The Chief Minister is promising to give reservation when only five days are left for the election, added Surjewala.

"We have also sought action against the Collector and the SP, who behave more like BJP workers than government servants. We have provided evidence against them to the EC. The EC has assured us that will look into the matter and take appropriate action," he said.
