Pakistan felt betrayed over US statement: Army chief

Pakistan felt betrayed over US statement: Army chiefIslamabad, Jan 12 (IANS) Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Friday told a US military commander that the entire Pakistan felt betrayed over the recent statements by US, the military said.

General Bajwa made the comments in a phone conversation with US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander General Joseph L. Votel, Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump tweeted that the "US has foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools".

"They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!" he said.

Bajwa said that "entire Pakistani nation felt betrayed over US' recent statements despite decades of cooperation", and unanimous Pakistan's national response reflected the same sentiment.

The Army chief made it clear that Pakistan will continue its counter terrorism efforts even without US financial support in accordance with the country's national interest and shall remain committed to bringing the efforts to logical conclusion along with other stake holders.
