Injustice being done to JNU students: Students Union

Injustice being done to JNU students: Students UnionNew Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS) The JNU administration is meting out a "grave injustice" to students by not allowing them a hearing or consultation on various matters, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) said on Wednesday.

Slapped with a proctorial notice for "protesting" at the the administrative block, the union members condemned the administration as "anti-student" and "anti-democratic", saying that the "entire student community" is in distress because of it.

"Right from slapping sedition cases on previous JNUSU representatives and students, to penalising them through heavy fines over past two years only shows how anti-student and anti-democratic the VC and his administration is," the JNUSU said in a statement.

"The entire student community is extremely distressed about these grave concerns and would like to put forward their concerns in front of the head of this institution," it added.

One of the issues that the students are protesting over is the compulsory attendance order issued by the varsity recently. The union has boycotted the decision calling it against JNU culture and citing other practicalities.

The notice was served to the students on Monday accusing them of blocking the administrative block. However, the over 50 students who had gone to meet the Vice Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar on January 4, have maintained that they had gone to the admin block to "meet" the VC and give him a letter opposing the attendance move, signed by "2,500 students" and not for protesting.

The students are required to appear before the Proctorial committee on Thursday.
