Asylum-seekers to work at Italian tourist sites

Naples, Dec 19 (IANS/AKI) Thousands of refugees will get jobs at Italy's ancient Pompeii archaeological site and the 18th-century Reggio di Caserta palace under a multi-million euro deal inked on Monday in Naples by the government and 265 mayors from the surrounding Campania region, where at least 5,000-7,000 migrants will be employed.

The refugees will be assigned socially useful work in Campania and up to 2,000 of them will be given jobs as attendants at Pompeii and at the Reggia di Caserta under the 30-million euro accord.

Town that have signed up to the accord will also reportedly be able to access European funding to renovate buildings to accommodate the refugees as well to house homeless people and Roma Gypsies.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Italy's Interior Minister Marco Minniti, the Campania region's Governor Vincenzo De Luca and the Mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris.
