There can't be any compromise on women's safety: IWPC to Delhi Police chief

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) The Indian Women's Press Corps on Monday wrote to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to highlight the issue of safety of working women in the capital, in the wake of the molestation of two women, including a journalist, on November 13 at the ITO Metro station.

They said the incident happened very close to the Police Headquarters where the two women were groped and molested in the Metro station area by the same individual.

"The reporter who fought off her attacker single-handedly had to wait for a long time before the police arrived. Though the assaulter has been arrested, it is shocking that no personnel of the metro police and the CISF was present at that hour. The FIR too was lodged after considerable delay.

"The IWPC would like to reiterate that there cannot be any compromise on the safety of women at all times and in all situations. Due to the nature of the profession, women journalists have to often work till late and use public transport, where they have an expectation that they would be safe. It is the responsibility of the police and its personnel that every woman in the capital feels secure.

"We hope you will look into these issues with the urgency and seriousness they deserve."
