Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar plant achieves full capacity

Tata Steel's Kalinganagar plant achieves full capacityBhubaneswar, Nov 14 (IANS) Tata Steel on Tuesday said it has ramped up its capacity at its Kalinganagar greenfield plant in Odisha to 100 per cent and it is all set to go for second phase expansion shortly.

"We have ramped up our production and achieved 100 per cent capacity at the three million tonne per year (mtpa) steel plant," said Rajiv Kumar, Vice President (Operation) of Tata Steel Kalinganagar Plant.

The Kalinganagar steel unit started commercial operations in May 2016.

The steelmaker may expand the Kalinganagar project to eight million tonnes, instead of six million tonnes, from the existing three million tonnes.

"It's been deliberated. An engineering team is evaluating whether we will go another three million tonnes or five million tonnes to the existing three million tonnes. The board will decide on the matter. We may expect it (the decision) shortly," he added.

He declined to comment on the proposed investment for the second phase expansion as the company's board was yet to approve the expansion.

He also said that the company will participate in the bidding process in future to get new mines for the expanded project.

The company, which put up a good show in the last two quarters in terms of revenue, expects similar results in the remaining two quarters of the 2017-18 financial year.
