New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) A man facing trial in a cheating case was shot dead in a court complex here on Monday, police said. The accused was quickly overpowered and arrested.
Vinod, 31, was shot dead while police was taking him back to the Tihar Central Jail. The killer, Abdul Khan, was overpowered and arrested, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rishi Pal said.
This is the fourth fatal shooting in Rohini court in west Delhi in three years, the Rohini Bar Association said and criticised the lack of adequate security on the premises.
Sub-Inspector Narender, who was responsible for Rohini courts security, has been suspended and Prashant Vihar police station SHO Ashok Kumar sent to the district police lines as punishment, the DCP said.
Rohini Bar Association President Mahavir Sharma told IANS that no entry pass was needed for anyone to enter the court premises. He said they had requested the district judge "more than 10 times" to make entry passes mandatory for visitors.
"On Monday, we told the judge that if the entry pass is not made compulsory within 24 hours, we will go on an indefinite strike from November 15," Sharma said.
The DCP said that Vinod, a Mangolpuri resident jailed in connection with a seven-year-old cheating case, was fatally shot in a corridor near the court canteen around 11.20 a.m.
Though Vinod was rushed to hospital, he was declared brought dead by doctors. A countrymade pistol used by Khan, a resident of Nangloi, was seized, police said.
Pal told IANS that the corridor was crowded when Vinod was shot dead and the Assistant Sub-Inspector responsible for Vinod's security was merely two feet away when he was attacked.
The officer said only one shot was fired and that the accused did not have criminal history. He said the reason for the murder could not be ascertained immediately.
The DCP said police was investigating into possible security lapses that led to the murder on the court premises.
