Five die in Bengal road accidentKolkata, Aug 24 (IANS) Five persons died when their car crashed into a heavy vehicle after being hit by a tanker from behind in West Bengal's Hooghly district early on Thursday, police said.

"Five persons going towards Arambag Hospital in a private Maruti van died when their car was knocked by a tanker from behind and crashed into a heavy vehicle in front of it," a police officer from Arambagh police station said.

The five deceased -- Salkher Ali (33), Middya Gulam Murtaza (47), Sekh Gulam Mustafa (33), Sekh Taj Muhammad (63) and Sekh Kamrul (29) -- were residents of the same district.

 

According to eye witnesses, the tanker's driver lost control and hit the van, police said.

Police recovered the bodies from the crushed vehicle and sent them for autopsy.

"We are looking for the driver of the tanker. The traffic was temporarily hampered due to the accident," the officer added.
