Bari (Italy), July 31 (IANS/AKI) A 10-year-old girl choked to death on a piece of meat in the southern Italy's Puglia region late on Sunday when her parents were unable to dislodge it and paramedics called to the scene could not revive the child.

The tragedy occurred in the town of Melissano in the province of Lecce. Public prosecutors in Lecce did not order an autopsy on the schoolgirl.

A 58-year-old woman in Maglie, also in the province of Lecce, choked to death on a piece of meat in March this year.

After road accidents, choking is the most common cause of death in the under-fives.
