Two Italian councils disbanded for alleged mafia links

Two Italian councils disbanded for alleged mafia linksRome, July 28 (IANS/AKI) The Italian cabinet on Friday said it had dissolved two councils in the southern Calabria region for alleged infiltration by the local mafia.

The disbanded councils are Cropani in the province of Catanzaro and Brancaleone in the province of Reggio Calabria, the cabinet said in a statement.

The cabinet also extended the dissolution of Brescello council in the northern Emilia-Romagna region, the statement said.

Brescello was the first northern town to be disbanded (in 2016) for infiltration by the Calabrian mafia or 'Ndrangheta.

Hundreds of town councils in southern Italy have been dissolved for mafia infiltration since 1991 including the Sicilian mafia stronghold of Corleone - birthplace of 'boss of bosses' Toto Riina - which was dissolved last year.
