The court found Yang Qingpei guilty of committing the killings on September 28 last year after his parents refused to give him money, Xinhua news agency reported.
Fearing he would be caught, Yang later killed 17 villagers - three children included - with a pickaxe and fled to Kunming. He was arrested the following day.
Yang, born in 1989, pleaded guilty to all charges and apologized to the relatives of the dead when going on trial on July 19.
