New Delhi, July 20 (IANS) BJP President Amit Shah on Thursday congratulated Ram Nath Kovind for his election as the 14th President of India and dubbed it "truly historic".
"Congratulations to Ram Nath Kovind ji for the emphatic victory in the 2017 Presidential election. His victory is truly historic," Shah said in a tweet.
Shah said he hoped Kovind will distinguish himself as an exceptional President.
"The election of Ram Nath Kovind ji is a victory for the poor, downtrodden and the marginalised and their aspirations," the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said.
The BJP chief also thanked all political parties and members of the electoral college who supported Kovind.
"I thank BJP members, the National Democratic Alliance family, other valued parties and leaders who supported Ram Nath Kovind," Shah said.
Kovind was elected the new President by securing 65.65 per cent of the total valid votes, compared with opposition nominee Meira Kumar who got 34.35 per cent.
In an electoral college made up of 4,986 voters (members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and state assemblies, including two union territories with assemblies) with a total vote value of 10,98,903, Kovind secured 2,930 votes with total vote value of 7,00,244, while the former Lok Sabha Speaker secured 1,844 votes with a total vote value of 3,67,314.
