Ghana’s parliament office building caught up in fire

Ghana's parliament office building caught up in fireAccra, July 19 (IANS) The multi-storey office complex of Ghana's Parliament in Accra caught fire late on Tuesday, with no one reported dead or hurt.

The fire, which started while Members of Parliament were still going about their busy schedules in the chamber of the house, was on the east wing of the 10th floor of the 12-sotrey office building, Xinhua reported.

It is not known what caused the fire but personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are at the scene trying to douse the inferno.

Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu told the media they were alerted about smoke emanating from the 10th floor.

"But unfortunately the fire tenders available at the time could not access the building as they could not pass through the entrance," the majority leader said.

He, however, expressed confidence in the ability of the Fire Service to bring things under control.

Three fire tenders were quickly dispatched to beef up those already working to bring the inferno under control.
