Bar Council of India to suggest modifications in Advocates Act

Bar Council of India to suggest modifications in Advocates ActNew Delhi, July 10 (IANS) The Bar Council of India (BCI) is going to formulate its own recommendations relating to amendments required in the Advocates Act, an official said on Monday.

"Bar Council of India would formulate its own recommendations relating to amendments required in the Advocates Act in consultation with all State Bar Councils and various Bar Associations inclusive of High Court Bar Associations through the length and breadth of the country," said BCI Secretary Srimanto Sen.

He added that the BCI would send the report to the Union Law Ministry.

The Council, in a joint meeting held on Saturday and Sunday, decided to reject the "draconian, anti-lawyer and undemocratic" 266th Report of the Law Commission of India.

The Law Commission had suggested that lawyers should be slapped with penalties if they resort to a strike in the future.

On June 8, the BCI received a letter from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice requesting it to furnish views and comments on the 266th Report of the Law Commission of India suggesting amendments to the Advocates Act.
