Not able to give SEZ to Wipro due to policy: MamataKolkata, July 6 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said her government was not able to give SEZ status to Wipro for its second project here due to policy decisions.

She also indicated that SEZs were approching the sunset clause.

"There is a problem of SEZs. Wipro was interested for SEZ but because of our policy decision, we were not able to give SEZ status. Now, there is sunset (clause). That chapter is over," she said in her address at Nasscom East IT Awards here.

 

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had earlier announced that tax benefits to SEZs to continue till 2020.

Banerjee also urged the IT industrialists to invest in Bengal, noting the state has decided to give incentives to the industry.

Reacting to her statement, Wipro's Chief Strategy Officer Rishad Premji said: "I did not ask anything today. She was mentioning a conversation that happened in the past. We will explore and evaluate opportunity how to scale here."

Asked whether Wipro will abandon the second project here, he said: "We will evaluate ideas with the government to see what will make it exciting to be here."
