Chandigarh, June 30 (IANS) In a first of its kind initiative, the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on Friday announced it will begin 24x7 services for sick and injured stray animals in Chandigarh.
The services will begin from Saturday (July 1), an official said here.
"Due to the increasing numbers of sick and injured stray animals in Chandigarh and taking into consideration demands of animal lovers and animal welfare organisations, it has been decided to extend the working hours of the SPCA (a government infirmary) to 24 hours in Chandigarh from July 1," Director, Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, Chandigarh Administration-cum-Vice President SPCA Karnail Singh said here on Friday.
Singh said that the service was being extended as Chandigarh was working towards being a Smart City.
Recruitment of additional staff has been made for the treatment of the animals, Singh added.
The SPCA treated and rehabilitated 3,180 stray animals in 2016.
