Kerala CM assures new women's film body to look into issues

Thiruvananthapuram, May 18 (IANS) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday assured a delegation of women professionals from the film industry that the state government will set up a committee to study their needs and suggest measures to take care of them.

The women professionals from the film industry in the state have got together in a new body named Women's Collective in Cinema, the first such organisation for women, including actresses and technicians, associated with the Malayalam film industry.

The delegation, led by popular actress Manju Warrier, Rima Kallingal, Parvathy and Sajitha Madathil, among others, called on Vijayan and expressed their concern, especially in the wake of the kidnapping of a popular actress at Kochi earlier this year.

Warrier and her colleagues later expressed satisfaction at their meeting with the Chief Minister and said that even though they have now formed this new outfit, there will be no bar on their membership in other existing bodies of the film industry.

A statement from Vijayan's office said the government will soon constitute a committee to study all aspects concerned with the problems and issues faced by women in the film industry and to take remedial measures.
