Afghan forces dislodge Taliban from district

Afghan forces dislodge Taliban from districtKabul, May 16 (IANS) The Afghan security forces on Tuesday took control of Qala-e-Zal district in Kunduz province after clashes with Taliban militants, the district governor said.

"Afghan forces evicted militants from the district centre. As of now, no casualties have been reported on the side of security forces but several militants have been killed and injured during clashes," Xinhua news agency quoted Governor Mabubullah Sayydi as saying.

On May 6, Taliban militants overran the district after days of fighting forcing the troops to retreat from the district bordering Tajikistan.

Kunduz as well as neighbouring Baghlan and Takhar provinces have been the scene of heavy clashes over the past couple of months as Taliban have been trying to challenge the government forces in the once relatively peaceful region.

The Kunduz clashes have caused hundreds of families to flee their houses and find safer places in the province.
