Government approves plan for Gandhi Samadhi revamp at Rajghat

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) The Union Government on Wednesday approved the setting up of digital screens at the Gandhi Samadhi at Rajghat in the national capital, and an interpretation centre for interactive learning about the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi, an official statement said.

 

Three 46-inch LED screens would be set up around the Samadhi for displaying visuals relating to the life of the Mahatma, national movement, playing Amrit Vachans and quotes of Gandhi, the statement said.

The interpretation centre will have two screens for interactive learning through a quiz on the life and work of Gandhi and the national movement, and movies and speeches of the Mahatma.

The renovation approved by the Urban Development Ministry at a cost of around Rs. 3 crore also includes widening of pathways, providing ramps to enable easy access for differently-abled persons, granite flooring, development of a two-metre wide and 1.10-km peripheral pathways around Rajghat, seats and benches for visitors, toilets accessible to all, hedge barriers and a foot overbridge across the Lotus Pond at the memorial.

The approval was given by the Rajghat Samadhi Committee, chaired by Union Minister of Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Lok Sabha MP Udit Raj, former MP and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajmohan Gandhi, and other members of the committee attended the meeting.

Naidu has told the Central Public Works Department to ensure the quality and execution of the approved work at the earliest.
