Dublin, March 20 (IANS) Captain of Irish top-division football club Derry City, Ryan McBride, 27, was found dead in his home on Sunday night, his club announced on Monday.

"Derry City Football Club is deeply saddened by the untimely death of our captain, Ryan McBride," a statement on the club's website read, without giving any reason for the death of the seasoned defender.

Derry termed McBride as "a great captain" as the club will "miss his inspiration and his leadership".

 

The Derry native made his debut for his hometown club in 2011 and made over 100 League appearances for Derry.

"In the hearts and minds of all of us and long into the future Ryan McBride will be remembered as one of the greats of Derry City Football Club," it added.

Football Association of Ireland (FAI) CEO John Delaney said in a statement: "Irish football is in mourning with the loss of a true great of the game, with the shocking news about Ryan McBride's passing.

"I would like to pass on my deepest condolences to Ryan's family, friends, and his club, Derry City FC, for which he was their leader, their captain and their inspiration."
