Young opener Matt Renshaw (40 not out) and Shaun Marsh (2 not out) were at the crease when the umpires called for lunch, as the visitors trailed India's first innings total of 189 by 102 runs.
Resuming the day at 40/0, Australia lost opener David Warner (33) and captain Steven Smith (8) in the first session of the day as they struggled for runs.
