Vienna, Jan 17 (IANS) Iran has complied with the latest stipulations in its internationally-agreed nuclear deal by removing centrifuges and machinery used to enrich uranium from a nuclear plant, the United Nations-backed atomic agency said. Monday.
Iran and six world powers, including Russia, China, US, Britain, France and Germany, reached an agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue in July 2015 that put Iran on the path of sanctions relief but more strict limits on its nuclear programme.
"Iran has removed excess centrifuges and infrastructure from the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant in line with its nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," Efe news cited a statement issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
This stage of the nuclear deal required Iran to move uranium enrichment facilities from the Fordow nuclear plant near the holy city of Qom in central Iran to a storage center in Natanz, near Esfahan.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano confirmed that the process of removing uranium enrichment facilities at Fordow had been carried out within the time-frame set by the JCPOA.
The nuclear deal, backed by incumbent Iranian President Hassan Rouhani , was widely welcomed by many in the West as a thawing of the frigid relations that came in response to the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.
US President-elect Donald Trump, however, has heavily criticized the Iran nuclear deal, saying he would like to scrap the agreement when he takes office.
