Two abandoned girls rescued from Delhi house

Two abandoned girls rescued from Delhi houseNew Delhi, Aug 26 (IANS) An eight-year-old girl and her three-year-old sister were rescued from a house where they were locked for four days without food and water, police said on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikramjit Singh told IANS that the siblings were rescued from a locked rented house in Nepali Colony, in Samaypur Badli area of west Delhi on August 19 when police was alerted by neighbours.

The girls were abandoned by their parents because they were girls, said the officer, adding that police broke into the house - No 304 - and found the two, Himanshi, 8, and Deepali, 3, lying on a broken cot holding each other's hand.

"The girls were starved. Himanshi had deep wounds on her head and it was badly infected by worms. They were immediately rushed to Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hospital where they are being treated and stated to be out of danger," the officer said.

Another officer close to the case informed that the house was stinking and was full of flies and mosquitoes. "There was no ventilation in the room. The children could barely survive."

The officer said the girls' father, Bunty, 35, abandoned them when he failed to bear the burden of rearing them because he was jobless and an alcoholic.

During investigation police found that Bunty's wife Rajni lived in the house with their three children. Besides Himanshi and Deepali, the couple has a five-year-old son.

Frustrated over financial difficulties, Rajni left home with her son leaving behind her two daughters in the custody of her drunkard and jobless husband, the officer said.

Neighbours informed police that Bunty didn't work, and instead cursed the girls for having been born to him. Finally, on August 15, he locked the house and left the two girls to die of starvation and did not return.

Police has registered a case against the girls' parents and are to get information about their whereabouts.

Meanwhile, police contacted the Delhi Child Welfare Committee, which agreed to send the girls to a rehabilitation centre, after they are discharged from the hospital.
