Myanmar President to visit India this month

Myanmar President to visit India this monthNew Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw will visit India from August 27 to 30 at the invitation of President Pranab Mukherjee, it was announced on Wednesday.

The visit comes close less than a week after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's visit to Myanmar.

This will be the first state visit by the Myanmar President after the assumption of office by Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) government in March this year.

"The Myanmar President will be accompanied by his wife, Daw Su Su Lwin, several key ministers and senior officials," the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

During his visit, U Htin will have official engagements in New Delhi and also tour places of historical and cultural importance in India.

"The visit of the Myanmar President will help to further strengthen and expand traditionally close ties between the two countries," the statement said.

During her visit to Nay Pyi Taw, Sushma Swaraj met both President U Htin and State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Suu Kyi and the focus of their talks was promotion of bilateral trade ties, cooperation in transport, health and energy sectors.

The Indian side offered technical assistance for development of Myanmar's agricultural sector.

Myanmar and India have vowed to cooperate on border security following clashes between the Indian Army and the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), near Myanmar-India border last week.

The Myanmar side pledged not to tolerate any rebel groups active on its soil which are trying to harm the interest of its neighbouring countries.
