Athlete Sudha tests positive for swine fluBengaluru, Aug 23 (IANS) Indian woman athlete Sudha Singh, who participated in the 3000 metre steeplechase at the recent Rio Olympics, tested positive for swine flu (H1N1), a doctor said on Tuesday.

"Sudha was tested for zika, chikungunya, malaria, dengue and H1N1 as she was suffering from cough, body pain, fever and other symptoms. Results were negative for other diseases but positive for H1N1," Fortis Hospital doctor Anantha Padmanabha said in a statement here.

The hospital had sent Sudha's blood samples on Monday to the state-run National Institute of Virology at Pune in Maharashtra and Nimhans in Bengaluru to conduct tests for zika and swine flu, while tests for other diseases were done at the hospital itself.

"We have taken a holistic approach to treat Sudha for H1N1. She is stable and on the path of recovery. Her treatment will be based on the symptoms," said Padmanabha.

Sudha was rushed to the hospital on Monday from the Sports Authority of India hostel on return from Rio de Janeiro, as she had fever and was feeling tired and dehydrated.

"We are updating the state and central health authorities and SAI on Sudha's health condition," Padmanabha added.

Sudha is under observation in the hospital's isolation ward.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has wished Sudha speedy recovery and told SAI that the state government would bear the medical expenses for her treatment.
