CPI-M expels party leader

New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) The CPI-M on Monday said it has expelled its Central Committee member Jagmati Sangwan "for gross indiscipline".

"The Central Committee now in session in New Delhi has decided to expel Sangwan from the primary membership of the party for gross indiscipline," the Communist Party of India-Marxist said in a statement.

Party general secretary Sitaram Yechury later said Sangwan was expelled after she stormed out of the meeting mid-way over some differences.

"She suddenly stood up in the midst of the meeting and said that she wanted to resign. (Tripura Chief Minister and politburo member) Manik Sarkar, who was chairing the meeting, said that lets first discuss the issue at hand and we may take up the resignation issue later.

"However, she did not wait for it and walked out," he said.

Although he did not clearly say what was the particular issue that irritated Sangwan, she is understood to have taken exception to the party's decision to tie up with Congress in West Bengal.

"The Central Committee concluded that the electoral tactics adopted in West Bengal was not in consonance with the Central Committee decision not to have an alliance or understanding with the Congress," Yechury said.

He said that the committee has also said the decision should be rectified.
