Jammu & Kashmir government to re-visit industrial policy

Srinagar, May 12 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday said it would re-visit the industrial policy approved by the administrative council when the state was under Governor's Rule from January to April and the new version won't compromise the state's special status under Article 370 on the Indian constitution.

"The state government has decided to revisit the Jammu and Kashmir Industrial Policy-2016 ... to make it more comprehensive, broad-based and inclusive without compromising the Jammu and Kashmir's special position," said Education Minister and government spokesman Naeem Akhtar.

Governor N.N. Vohra had approved the policy on March 15.

Akhtar said the state has many important sectors like horticulture and medicinal plants that needed to be classified as an industry to boost their growth.

"As a democratically elected government, we have to take care of the aspirations of the larger section of the people and stakeholders in the state."

He said that stakeholders would be also consulted before finalizing the new policy that will rejuvenate the industrial sector in the state.

"It will not only provide new jobs but take the state to the next level of economic development through expanded industrial activity."
