Probe into Kalabhavan Mani death progressing well: Kerala DGP

Chalakudy (Kerala) March 25 (IANS) Kerala police chief T.P. Senkumar on Friday visited the outhouse where film actor Kalabhavan Mani had taken ill days before dying in a hospital, and said he was satisfied with the progress of the investigation.

Senkumar held discussions with the police officers probing the allegedly unnatural death of the popular Malayalam actor-singer and visited Mani's outhouse here in Thrissur district.

It was in his outhouse that Mani, 45, hosted some friends, allegedly consumed liquor in their company and then took ill on March 4.

The same day he was admitted to a hospital in Kochi. Said to be suffering from a liver ailment, he died two days later.

A forensic examination found toxic chemical Chlorpyrifos in his body.

"We are in no hurry to come to any conclusion as to the reason of his death. We are now only looking forward to scientific results to help us," Senkumar told reporters after meeting the probe team.

The police team is now waiting for more results from chemical laboratories on objects that were collected from the outhouse and also the viscera of the actor that has now been sent to a laboratory in Hyderabad.

The actor's brother Ramakrishnan said he suspected foul play in Mani's death and that the outhouse seemed to have been cleaned before the family and police reached there.

The police then broadened its investigation, having so far taken statements from more than 200 people.

It has also completed several rounds of inspection of Mani's 30-acre farmhouse near here and collected some evidence, including a few bottles, one of which is suspected to have contained the insecticide that was found in his body.
