Children's book in Philippines teach disaster preparation

Manila, March 11 (IANS) The publishers of a new children's book in the Philippines seek to inform and prepare kids for the many natural disasters that regularly affect the country, the media reported on Friday.

The book, "What Happens in Disasters" written by Dinna Dayao with illustrations, contains 120 true accounts of children who survived various disasters across the archipelago nation, EFE news reported.

Some examples of stories in the book include a child who lived through super typhoon Yolanda, one who experienced an earthquake in Bohol province, and Muslim children who survived a spate of violence between rebels and the military in Zamboanga city.

"It is important for us to see this when we make programs for children. We see not the adult's perspective but the child's perspective," Philippines' education secretary Armin Luistro said.

The edition offered for younger grades is written in Tagalog language, and in English for the older grades.

Though the book was launched by the education department last month, it will be officially available in schools from June, the start of the academic year.
