Bengal madrasah teachers call off three-month long strike

Kolkata, Feb 23 (IANS) Protesting teachers of unrecognised madrasahs in West Bengal withdrew their three-month-long hunger strike following Trinamool Congress Vice President Mukul Roy's assurance that their demands would be considered after the assembly polls.

"I appeal to you to withdraw your fast. Within a few days the assembly election will be announced. We cannot do anything at this juncture. But after the formation of the new government we will find a permanent solution to this problem through discussions," Roy said to the teachers on Monday.

The unrecognised madrasah teachers, who called off the hunger strike on Monday, were pressing for better pay and state-aid.

Their agitation had entered 96th day on Monday.
