Centre, Arunachal govt coordinate to tackle flood crisis: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Itanagar, July 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who is on a two-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh to assess the flood situation, on Wednesday assured that the Centre and the state government are working in close coordination and will together help the state overcome the ongoing crisis.

Chouhan, along with Union Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, on Wednesday conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas in Kayi Panyor district and other parts of the state.

Officials said that in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, a detailed review of the situation in flood-affected areas and relief efforts was conducted by the Union Minister in the presence of Rijiju, Khandu, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Kaling Moyong and senior officials.

Later, in a series of posts on his social media platform X, Chouhan said that for the past two days, they had been continuously among the flood-affected people. He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre stood shoulder to shoulder with every affected family.

He expressed confidence that this difficult time would pass, and every possible effort for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction would be made with complete sensitivity and commitment.

He stressed that the Centre and the state government together would steer Arunachal Pradesh through the crisis.

The Union Minister said that even amidst the devastation of floods in Arunachal Pradesh, people’s resolve remained unshaken. Homes had been destroyed, and crops washed away, but the will to survive had not broken.

He noted that in Boing village, children, youth and villagers came together to build a protection wall to prevent floodwaters from entering the village in the future. “We too contributed our labour alongside them. The government is carrying out relief and rehabilitation efforts with full commitment, but this societal participation is our greatest strength,” Chouhan said.

He, along with Rijiju and Khandu, on Tuesday evening also visited flood-affected villages by road and met with the affected people. “In this hour of crisis, the Central and state governments stand firmly committed alongside the people,” the Union Minister stated.

Chouhan, who also holds the Rural Development portfolio, on Wednesday called on Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K.T. Parnaik (Retd.) at Lok Bhavan, Itanagar.

A Lok Bhavan official said that they discussed recent flood damages along with strengthening irrigation, connectivity and rural infrastructure, promotion of organic farming and high-value crops, skill development, agri-technology and market linkages.

The Governor apprised the Union Minister of the extensive damage caused by recent floods across several districts of Arunachal Pradesh. He sought continued support from the Centre for relief, rehabilitation and restoration of essential infrastructure and livelihoods.

The Governor highlighted the immense agricultural potential of Arunachal Pradesh and emphasised that with focused support from the Centre, the state could emerge as a major hub of sustainable and high-value agriculture.

He said that strengthening infrastructure, promoting organic farming, introducing modern technology and improving market connectivity would boost the rural economy and contribute to the vision of Atma Nirbhar Arunachal, Viksit Arunachal and Viksit Bharat.

Highlighting Arunachal Pradesh’s natural advantage in organic farming, Lt Gen Parnaik (Retd.) urged support for certified organic clusters, subsidies for natural farming, promotion of high-value horticulture crops and branding of ‘Organic Arunachal’ products at national and global levels.

He also sought assistance for research centres, farmer training and climate-resilient agricultural practices through institutions like ICAR and NABARD.

The Governor further stressed the importance of modern technology, skill development, agri-startups and stronger market linkages to empower farmers and create employment opportunities for the youth.

He emphasised that promoting food processing and agro-based industries would strengthen the rural economy and reduce migration.

The Union Minister assured the Governor of full support and assistance for Arunachal Pradesh’s development and agricultural growth.

Meanwhile, Chouhan, as part of the unique practice observed by visiting dignitaries, planted a sapling of the Bokul tree, a species known for its fragrant flowers, evergreen nature and ecological value.
