Beijing, Feb 23 (IANS) Photos of two 16-year-olds in wedding gown and suit have sparked heavy criticism and heated discussion on Chinese social media, a news report on Tuesday said.

The two teens, who were first reported to be a 13-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, have clarified online that they both were 16-year-old, and their marriage was accepted by their respective families despite the legal marriageable age in China being 22 for males and 20 for females, the China Daily reported.

The couple, from Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, claimed to have known each other for over a year. Both have dropped out of school. Aside from clarifying their ages in the online statement, the two also refuted netizens' speculation that the marriage is due to the bride's pregnancy.

"The marriage between us is just inevitable after knowing each other for over a year. So we just held the ceremony and will get a marriage certificate after we reach our legal age," said the bride.

The fact that the groom quit in the second year of junior high school sparked debate. According to Chinese law, a teenager has to receive nine years of compulsory education, namely six years of primary school education and three years in junior high school.

Some web users have slammed the wedding, since it is not legal.

"Is it possible that their families arranged this wedding, invited friends to the wedding banquet so as to collect gift money? The 'marriage' is not protected by law anyway," Weibo user Ajiaojiao said.

"We fell in love, and with our families' support we held this wedding. We just wait to get to a marriageable age. The current 'debate' or attention on me is really disturbing my life. " the groom added.

New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) Social media was in uproar on Friday amid claims that a video that first went viral showing JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and others shouting slogans seeking Kashmir's "azadi" may have been doctored with a superimposed audio clip.

The controversial tape emerged from a February 9 event at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, causing nationwide outrage as police arrested Kanhaiya Kumar and cracked down on students in the university.

Kanhaiya Kumar, president of the JNU Students Union and from the CPI-affiliated AISF, was arrested on sedition charges for allegedly raising the "anti-national" slogans at the event organised to commemorate Kashmiri separatist Afzal Guru, who was hanged for the 2001 parliament attack.

The student leader has denied the allegations.

The first video clip fuelled widespread protests and counter-protests, the target being the JNU, where Left student unions have traditionally held sway.

It now appears that Kanhaiya Kumar and the others accused of sedition at the JNU event never shouted slogans demanding freedom for Jammu and Kashmir from India.

A new viral video, said to be the original clip of the event, shows that the students indeed raised slogans for "freedom" - from poverty, fascism, "sanghwaad" (RSSism), feudalism, capitalism, Brahminism and inequality.

The first video clip was telecast by some TV channels including Zee News, Times Now and India TV. ABP News ran the supposedly original video on Thursday evening.

Later in the day, India Today analyzed the videos saying that the audio had been doctored.

But Times Now has since clarified that it didn't telecast the video. It said that BJP spokesman Sambit Patra “sought to play the clip on his iPad during a debate”.

The channel showed a small clip run on Patra's iPad but its Chief Editor Arnab Goswami, moderating the debate, told the BJP spokesperson that the video run on some Hindi channels had to be verified.

However, the authenticity of neither of the clips could be independently verified even as Delhi Police has been claiming that it has "adequate evidence" to prove that Kanhaiya Kumar made "anti-national" remarks.

The police also played a clip in a court here on Monday when it heard the case against the PhD student.

Amid the conflicting tapes, many reacted angrily to what they think was a deliberate attempt to frame the Left-leaning student leader. Some of those who shared the "doctored clip" apologised.

Swapan Dasgupta, a veteran columnist, was among those who had shared the "doctored" clip on Twitter. He withdrew the post on Friday morning.

"I checked with responsible people. There is a part of video clip I re-tweeted that may be dodgy. I erred & say so openly. Larger q's (questions) remain," wrote Dasgupta from his confirmed twitter handle @swapan55.

Senior journalist Siddharth Vardarajan, in an online article, sought action against "all those who have worked to ruin a young life" (Kanhaiya Kumar) for "fabricating a case... and peddling forged 'evidence'".

Shekhar Gupta, another senior journalist, shared the "un-doctored" video on Twitter and said that maybe Kanhaiya Kumar deserved an apology from the Delhi Police.

"Watch: Kanhaiya demanding Azaadi, but from rioters, capitalism, Manuvad, Brahminvad. He is owed a Del Police apology," Gupta wrote.

Kanhaiya Kumar, who is from Begusarai in Bihar, was on Wednesday sent to judicial custody till March 2. A section of lawyers assaulted him in the court despite police deployment.

Bengaluru, Feb 8 (IANS) Twitterati on Monday joined the user industry in hailing the telecom watchdog for ruling in favour of net neutrality, though it meant a loss of face to Facebook and cellular operators.

Minutes after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued an order upholding net neutrality and ruling out discriminatory pricing of data content, twitterati across the country took to micro-blogging to express their views.

Among them were Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who welcomed the ruling and termed it a "big win for internet users in India".

As against Facebook's Free Basics and the country's largest private telecom operator Airtel Zero offerings, the watchdog said "no service provider shall offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content".

Joining their leader, Congress spokesman Randeep S. Surjewalla and party leader Ahmed Patel welcomed the TRAI decision.

"The decision will negate differential data pricing and ensuring #Net Neutrality," Surjewalla tweeted.

"The decision will ensure a free and open internet for all #Net neutrality," tweeted Patel.

Leading e-tailor Snapdeal co-founder and chief executive Kunal Bahl said "great to see TRAI backing #NetNeutrality! Let's keep the Internet free and independent".

Taking a pot shot at Facebook's Free Basics, which is against net neutrality, journalist Vir Sanghvi tweeted "rot in hell Free Basics. You can't fool all the people all the time. Good decision by TRAI".

Journalist and former Hindu editor-in-chief Siddharth Varadarajan said "TRAI lays down historic order protecting net neutrality".

Mumbai-based anti-corruption crusader Anjali Damani tweeted the order as a big blow to Facebook that was "leaving no stones unturned to get Free Basics programme".

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, however, asked where he could read up on both sides of the #NetNeutrality debate.

"Have no idea what the debate is all about & would like to know," the National Conference leader quipped in the tweet.

Los Angeles, Jan 31 (IANS) British rock band Coldplay's music video for the single "Hymn for the Weekend", which earlier sparked a row for its "stereotypical" portrayal of India, is now facing criticism for singer Beyonce Knowles' cameo.

The "Crazy in Love" singer has been slammed by many for donning a sari in the music video, reports aceshowbiz.com.

The video also features Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor.

Shot in Mumbai, the video follows the band interacting with locals and being thrown coloured powders, which is part of the Holi festival.

At one point, the locals watch Knowles through a cinema box and in a wide-screen cinema. She sports two costumes in the film, one that shows her cleavage and the other that shows her in a sari and intricate jewellery.

However, some people are offended that Knowles was wearing a traditional headscarf that's supposed to represent a woman's level of humility.

"The Coldplay video is beauty. It's artistic and stunning. But Beyonce wearing 'Indian style' jewellery and clothes is not okay," one user wrote on Twitter.

Another commented: "Yikes that video with Coldplay and Beyonce is so disappointing... why can't they film without appropriating culture."

One person also pointed out how Sonam was only briefly featured in the video.

"My, Sonam looks adorable for the half-sec she's in it for. But that 'Hymn for the Weekend' video is some fairly uninspired cultural appropriation," a fan wrote.

Someone else wrote: "Expecting 'Hymn for the Weekend' to inspire further cultural appropriation. Maybe Kanye featuring Katy Perry with some English Morris dancers?"

Hymn for the weekend" is the latest single from the band's new album "A Head Full of Dreams". The video of the much hyped song seems to be a leaf out of a book on India, with Knowles as a glamorous Bollywood diva and Sonam walking among ruins in an ethnic attire.

It also gives a sneak-peak into Indian classical dance forms, and features Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin enjoying touristy things -- from exploring India with a ride in a 'black and yellow' taxi, and even in a boat on a ghat, to celebrating the festival of colours in Mumbai.

Kolkata, Jan 28 (IANS) With the recent terror attack in Punjab's Pathankot town yet again derailing India-Pakistan peace talks, a group of netizens from both sides of the border have taken to social networking sites advocating peace.

With the hashtags 'ProfileForPeace', 'IndoPakKeepTalking' 'KillTerrorismNotTalks, people from various parts of India, Pakistan and even the UK and the US have been changing their profile pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with a little scribble, appealing to the leaders of both the countries to get back to the discussion table.

The brainchild of Mumbai-based ad maker Ram Subramanian, the campaign first went viral after threats by the Shiv Sena led to the cancellation of the Mumbai and Pune concerts of Pakistani Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali last October.

With the terror attack at the Pathankot Air Force Base leading to the postponing of the foreign secretary-level talks, people are back with a 'profile for peace' campaign, making passionate pleas to the political leaders of the two countries.

Among the many to join the campaign is Pakistani journalist Beena Sarwar, who has changed her profile picture with the message: "Dear leaders don't let the acts of a few violent men write the future of many people like me who want peace."

Aman Ki Asha member Ruchhita Kazaria has posted a collage of the profile pictures of her friends, including from across the border, to drive home the point that people on both sides want peace and yearn for friendship.

Actress Parul Yadav, too, has lent her voice to the ProfileForPeace campaign and has posted a picture with a message urging "Kill terrorists, not talks".

Indo-Pakistan couple Hina Shahid and Vijay Chakravarthy have posted a profile picture with the message: "Dear leaders let there be peace for our future generations. Don't let the act of a few write the future of millions like us."

With both Delhi and Islamabad attempting to salvage the peace talks, President Pranab Mukherjee, in his Republic Day address, advocated the need for dialogue but cautioned that "peace cannot be discussed under a shower of bullets".

New Delhi, Jan 13 (IANS) This weekend when you are relatively free from life's mundane duties, ask yourself this: Are you the one who loves to post motivational posts taken from New Age gurus to the ancient scriptures on Facebook and Twitter? Did it ever occur to you that posting such profound thoughts may mean that you yourself need to fix your otherwise stressed life? Or are you a genuine change agent seeking to transform people's lives for the better?

Although some of the nation's leading behavioural experts slightly differ on this, one thing is clear: For some people, in their quest for bringing clarity and optimism in their own lives, they may be sharing "profound" thoughts with others on various social media platforms.

According to Dr. Samir Parikh, director (mental health and behavioral sciences) at Fortis Hospitals in the capital, people typically share posts based on their likes and personalities.

"This, however, cannot be generally applied to all the people. The fact is that people post things based on their personalities, their social groups, their interests and likes and dislikes so any more meaning to a post should be best avoided," Parikh told IANS.

However, Piya Mukherjee, director at VES Leadership Academy and Research Centre (VESLARC) in Mumbai, such people may or may not have driven by unhappiness in their own lives but they have walked the path of pain and developed a keen sense of compassion for their wider circle of friends on social media.

"Apart from the masses, there is another smaller group of people who share such posts - the catalysts or the change agents who genuinely see such posts as capable of inspiring others towards transformation," noted Mukherjee, also a corporate coach.

Such people are usually healers, teachers and counsellors by nature, irrespective of the official designation of the work they do. "Their role is to bring in some mind-food into the lives of their friends and they do this with a genuine intention," Mukherjee told IANS.

A study last December created quite a stir as it claimed that people who post inspirational and motivational quotes on various social media like Facebook and Twitter are actually "dumb" and "have lower levels of intelligence".

In the study titled "On the reception and detection of pseudo-profound bulls***t" that took examples of some of the inspirational quotes from New Age guru Deepak Chopra, psychologists from the University of Waterloo in Canada examined whether some people are more receptive to some silly inspirational statements than others.

The findings that appeared in the journal Judgment and Decision Making showed that there is a definite link between low intelligence and being impressed by what looks like "profound statements".

"I do not agree with these findings. Posts on inspiration may be a reflection of a person's mindset, temperament, insight or the situation that the person may be in. A person may choose to just share posts with his friends because it inspires him personally or provides him with strength," elaborated Dr. Sameer Malhotra (director, mental health and behavioural sciences) at Max Hospitals.

"It is not merely about intelligence but also about suggestibility, personality and support systems around you that shape your attitudes, belief and thinking patterns," Parikh added.

Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan, senior consultant (psychiatry) at Gurgaon's Paras Hospital, felt that people identify with thoughts and feelings which are prominent in their own mind.

"Therefore, we are often interested in reading and searching for content which is associated with our own dilemmas and conflicts. These feelings, thoughts and artistic interpretations are then further shared on social media," Madan told IANS.

There is, however, a fine line between "pseudo-profound" and otherwise pure inspirational stuff.

"Motivational and inspirational quotes will interest individuals who themselves seek motivation or are seeking to get out of their own sense of helplessness or hopelessness. They may be lonely but are definitely looking to make it better, not worse," Madan explained.

According to Mukherjee, when one is experiencing pain and decides to lend a helping hand to another, two things happen - there is an immediate sense of empathy and inter-connectedness with others who may be suffering which, in turn, leads to a better perspective on one's own unhappiness.

"Second, the act of helping others allows the person to come out of self-pity and hopelessness and feel that one is doing something useful. Whether or not the act is actually useful is secondary - the perception it creates in the doer's mind is significant," she emphasised.

Do such posts on the social media constitute a cry for help?

"It would take a perceptive mind to 'join the dots' and realise that the person posting inspiring material is actually going through an acute case of the blues. Hence, a reader can view such received posts at two levels - that of face-value inspiration and of a deeper level query about the person who has posted it," Mukherjee pointed out.

In the meantime, keep feeding friends with some real stuff on the social media that may change their lives for good - and yours too!

Kolkata, Jan 12 (IANS) While Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali performed here to a packed venue, a section of Twitterati, including BJP leaders, slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for inviting the singer to India just weeks after the Pathankot attacks.

Ali, who has over the years enthralled millions across the globe with his baritone voice, expressed gratitude and elation to be able to perform in the eastern metropolis with his son at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here.

But that did not stop a section of netizens from taking a dig at the initiative.

"Due to Confidence Building Measures like #PathankotAttack, Ghulam Ali will perform again in Kolkata (after saying he won't be back ever)."

Another post said: "Ghulam Ali concert on January 12. Midnight betrayal on the border, but Ghazal nite in Kolkata."

"We lost our martyrs in Pathankot last week & WB CM @MamataOfficial, Kolkata people are enjoying Pak singer Ghulam Ali's ghazals. Speechless!" said yet another tweet.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh attacked Banerjee's Trinamool Congress with: "TMC Govt is doing politics by bringing Ghulam Ali to perform in Kolkata."

An update by Bengal BJP's Twitter handle said: "When entire nation want  answer for #PathankotAttack,CM #AntiNationalMamata brings Pak Singer Gulam Ali for Concert."

On the other hand, positives did resonate on the microblogging platform.

"Blockbuster Full House at Ghulam Ali Concert in Netaji Indoor Stadium Kolkata today. Shivsena can create nuisance in Mumbai, not elsewhere!" chirped one.

After the cancellation of his concert in Mumbai due to threats by the Shiv Sena, Ghulam Ali in November had expressed disappointment asserting "never to return to India".

Mamata Banerjee offered Kolkata as a venue following the cancellation of the Mumbai concert in October.

London, Jan 11 (AFP) The Twitter account of the leader of Britain's main opposition party has appeared to have been hacked, judging by bizarre tweets including one calling Prime Minister David Cameron a "pie".

The out-of-character messages appeared on Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn's Twitter feed late yesterday but were soon erased.

No one has claimed responsibility for the prank.

"davey cameron is a pie" one of the messages read while another used foul language to make reference to Corbyn's opposition to Britain's nuclear defence system.

The tweets were shared hundreds of times before being erased and Internet users were soon sharing screenshots of the offending messages.

Britain's Press Association quoted an unnamed source close to Corbyn on the incident.

"At least they weren't subtle," the source said.

According to an RT.com report, the fire that engulfed a 63-storey luxury hotel The Address Downtown on New Year's Eve three hours before midnight was clicked and posted by many social media users with different hashtags, including #Dubaifire.

However, the photo of the couple posing with a selfie with the burning building as a backdrop sparked a storm on the micro-blogging site.

Social media users expressed reactions like "the most inappropriate selfie ever" and "people are stupid" while reacting to the couple's selfie.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started on the lower floor of the Address Downtown hotel from the outside and spread to the upper storeys.

Officials said one person had a heart attack as a result of the smoke and the rush to get out of the building. Another person was described as being moderately injured and 16 people were said to have suffered minor injuries.

A large fireworks display later went ahead at the world's tallest tower in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa, in front of tens of thousands of people while plumes of smoke continued to billow from the nearby hotel fire.

Last year, Dubai broke the world record for the largest fireworks display on the New Years Eve, releasing 479,651 shells during the midnight pyrotechnic show, Gulf News reported.

London, Dec 27 (IANS) Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) and One Direction fans have united to fight back after the hashtag #5SOSisDeadParty started trending online.

The hashtag is believed to have been started by girl band Fifth Harmony fans, some of who are reportedly enjoying the backlash 5SOS have received for their Rolling Stone interview, reports mirror.co.uk.

Extracts from a recent chat with the 5SOS - Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford - were released online and fans were left shocked by some of the comments, in particular, those about sleeping with fans.

The fans seem to have taken particular offence to some Fifth Harmony fans - known as harmonisers - who have brought up Irwin's self-harming history and his father leaving.

One supporter wrote: “#5SOSIsDeadParty Harmonizers bringing up Ashton's past but can they bring up 5harmony's future?”

The 5SOS fans also took to Twitter to thank One Direction's fans for their help.

"“When u know Directioners and 5sosfam will always support each other",” a delighted Twitter user wrote while someone else wrote: “When 5H tries to bring 5sos down. But they forgot that fandoms that stick together, SLAY together! #5SOSIsDeadParty.”

In the interview, which saw the band posing naked on the cover, Hemmings talks about having sex with lots of girls while on tour - something which has caused upset.

The excerpt reads: “Hemming says they took full advantage of the attention. They were wildest on their easy tours when they’d go to bars to mingle with fans after shows."

"‘When you put four young dudes on a tour bus, playing theaters, then arenas, you’re going to have sex with a lot of girls, I guess, says Hemmings. ‘We had a good time.’ Multiple girls in one night? ‘Feel like I shouldn’t say’ he says with a smirk. ‘You could say the possibility of this is high… the possibilities are endless.'”

Mumbai, Dec 14 (PTI) Dismissing rumours on the social media, the Reserve Bank today said all notes including those with scribbling will continue to be legal.

"As I understand, one of the topics trending on Whatsapp is the statement that at the end of the year notes with writing will not be accepted. This is absolutely false. Those notes continue to be a legal tender," RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said in an audio message.

"RBI has had the policy in the past of disfigured note being withdrawn from circulation to be replaced by clean notes. That does not mean that they are not legal tender, they can be used everywhere, they can be accepted everywhere. There is no terminal date for acceptance, so please disregard those rumours, they are not correct," he said.

RBI denied having issued a communication circulating on the social media alerting members of public that banks will not accept currency notes with scribbling on them from January 1, 2016.

All currency notes issued by it are legal tender and banks and members can freely and without fear accept them in exchange for good and services, RBI said in a statement.

RBI also stated that in pursuance of its clean note policy, it keeps requesting banks and members of public not to write on the currency notes it defaces them and reduces their life.

A picture on Facebook of a woman in ethnic wear sitting inside a coach grasping a lever has been doing the rounds since December 10. The tag emphatically says: "Kolkata Metro Rail-er prothom Mohila chalika" (Kolkata's Metrorail's first woman driver).

Congratulations and adulations poured in from netizens. Curiously, none of the posts reveal the identity of the person. The shared photos are attributed to Aloke Kumar Chattopdhyay, who in several updates has responded with a "thanks" to the numerous salutations of "wonderful post."

A section of inquisitive netizens have also questioned the veracity of the photo. "Dekhe toh mone hocche na (Doesn't really look like it)," one wrote.

Metro authorities, inundated with calls on the post, clarified it had no basis.

"I have received at least 50 calls today (on Saturday) about this. It is not true. The post seems to have gone viral," Indrani Banerjee, spokesperson of the Kolkata Metro, told IANS.

Asked about follow-up on the source, a harried Banerjee said: "I have not yet looked into it."

But anticipations for Kolkata Metro being steered by the fairer sex is not without reason.

Earlier this year, the first train of the Chennai Metro Rail chugged out on its maiden voyage with a 28-year-old diploma holder in engineering steering it on.

The issue was trending on number three on Twitter with #DelhiOddEvenLogic.

Social media site Facebook and messaging app were also flooded with messages, pictures mocking the government's decision.

"A fair Patel girl 23 years old with an even numbered car looking for a good pay scale boy with an odd numbered car," tweeted a woman on the site.

"Delhi odd even logic can solve the whole Ram Mandir issue. On Odd days they should build a Temple. On even days they should build a Mosque," tweeted another user.

Taking a dig at the 400 percent rise in salary of Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, one tweet said: "Got it. 400 percent salary hike of AAP MLAs is to buy both odd and even number cars to drive everyday."

"Just in case you miss the deadline please leave your cars at the border... You will have valet services provided by the government," another tweet said.

Disagreeing with the government's decision, some women expressed their anger on social media, saying it would be a compromise with their security as they feel more safe in their own cars instead of public transport.

"Ask any woman in Delhi who drives. She drives because she feels safer in a car unlike public transportation.Sort that out," wrote a woman on her Facebook page.

However, there were a few tweets which supported the government's move.

"Fabulous idea. This will take time to seep down. But in the end, will lead to a better pollution-free Delhi," said a tweet.

"The decision may be weird but unless we have a viable alternatives, I will support it. On second thoughts I agree," wrote another Twitter user.

From January 1, private vehicles will be allowed to run on the streets on alternate days depending on whether their licence plates end in even or odd numbers.

Kamaal R. Khan said: "People are bursting fire crackers all over India and asking Amit Shah ji to go to Pakistan."

"Get crackers, get Pakistan visa and a cheap air ticket," journalist Madhavan Narayan wrote, while photo-journalist Altaf Qadri said: "Gosh! Bihar turned out to be so 'intolerant'! Let it annex with Pakistan."

"At least one thing is proved now, cow only gives milk - not votes," one man, Imran Khan said in a tweet.

"Kashmiris depend on Biharis not only for labour but also to defeat Modi," Sana Fazili wrote.

In Bihar, the Grand Alliance of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United, Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress was poised to win majority in the 243-member assembly.
