New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) It was 3 a.m. on Friday when all the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape case were taken out from their barracks for a brief time. They were already awake as the "fear to be hanged" did not allow them to sleep. When the jail authorities asked them to finish their routine work and wear the new clothes provided by the jail authorities, they all broke down and fell at the feet of the jail staff.

"It's not right to reveal their identity, but they were not in the right state of mind and wanted to talk to jail workers but could not say a single word. They even refused to have tea when it was offered," a Tihar jail source said.

According to a Tihar headquarters source, "At around 5 a.m. the DCP of West District reached to meet these convicts. The Jail Superintendent introduced them to the DCP. Thereafter, they completed the documentation formalities."

"After completing the documentation, they were taken out from their cells and their faces were covered with cloth," he added.

An officer, requesting anonymity, told IANS: "They were not reacting to anything before their faces were covered but soon after they realised that they have reached the hanging room, one of them broke down and started crying and screaming. He almost fell down on the floor. But the jail staff took him to the hanging platform".

Each of the convicts was accompanied by six wardens who took them to the hanging platform.

When their feet were being tied, one of them started resisting but the security personnel restrained him. The convicts' hands were tied when they were taken out of their cells.

Now, it was the time to deliver justice to Nirbhaya. All the convicts were supposed to be hanged at the same time but Pawan was the only hangman there to pull the lever, hence, the jail staff helped in pulling the other handles.

Finally, at 5.30 a.m. when Jail Superintendent S. Sunil signalled that it was time to hang the convicts, Pawan and the other persons pulled the handles. After 30 minutes, the doctor who was present there, declared the convicts dead and their bodies were sent for post-mortem to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital.

The party said the victims of other such heinous crimes should also get justice. "No perpetrator should be allowed to walk free," said Abhishek Singhvi, senior party leader.

"Finally, the convicts in the #Nirbhaya case have been punished in accordance with law. The hanging at #TiharJail is a symbol of justice. As a part of the Indian legal system & as an Indian, I would like to apologise to the victim's family for the delay," said Singhvi.

The Congress, however, raised other cases where justice has been delayed.

Nirbhaya, a 23-year-old medical student, was gangraped in a moving bus in Delhi by six men in December 2012, which led to her death later. Four out of six convicts were hanged in Tihar jail on Friday while one committed suicide during the trial and one was set free for being a juvenile.

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Top women leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday lauded the judiciary for delivering the justice in the Nirbhaya case. They, however, expressed concern over the delay in punishing convicts.

"It has been very long overdue. They should have been hanged seven years ago. I appeal to the government that such matters should have a speedy trial. Delay in justice sends a wrong message among the people that they can trick the law," said former Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi in Parliament.

Echoing the same sentiment, BJP MP Rita Bahuguna Joshi said, "It is a historic day today. It has sent a message to the people that no one will be spared at the hands of law if they commit a crime against women.

"Today her parents have got justice. They kept struggling. Her soul must be in peace today. There is a need to decide fast on such cruel cases. There should be a time frame of six months or one year in deciding such cases. Our government is trying for the same."

BJP Karnataka leader Shobha Karandlaje said, "Her mother ran from pillar to post. It is a proud moment for all of us. People's faith in the judicial system of this country has been reinstated.

"A strong message has gone in the public today that no one can escape the law. Justice delayed but ultimately served."

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said the Nirbhaya case has showed the loopholes we have in our judicial system, urging all to work together and strengthen the system to ensure speedy justice to the victims.

Commenting on the hanging of Nirbhaya rape and murder case convicts, Kejriwal said, "The tragic incident of rape and murder of Nirbhaya happened seven years back. Since then the whole country had been waiting for justice. The convicts were hanged today, it took seven years to get justice for Nirbhaya. Today is a day when we should all stand together and resolve that no such incident should ever happen in India."

He said the country has time and again observed in the last few months, how some people manipulated the legal system and delayed the whole process, despite repeated death sentences being issued.

"We have to work together to address the various loopholes in our judicial system that favours the culprits. We must resolve that we will not let another Nirbahya incident ever happen in India. For this, we will need to work at several levels," he said.

He said, as a country, we need to strengthen the police system in India.

"We have seen how women get treated when they go to the police station to file a complaint against any culprit, how FIRs don't get registered, and how the culprits pressurise the police to instead harass the victim," he said.

Kejriwal said such a system must change and it should be ensured that police investigations are completed in a swift manner.

"There is also a need to change the judicial system so that in such cases, victims don't have to wait for seven long years shall but get justice within six months."

Kejriwal also said the Delhi government does not have any power over the police and judicial system, but it is working towards strengthening the other systems to provide security to every woman in the city, like installing CCTV cameras and street lights across Delhi.

"We will take all essential steps to ensure safety and security of women. I believe that today we all should resolve that we will never allow any such incident, like Nirbhaya, to ever happen in our country again."

He added that the whole case shows the number of loopholes we have in our judicial system, which gives the people a free hand in delaying justice for seven years.

"We all have to work together and strengthen the system to ensure speedy justice to the victims," he said.

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday said that it was "time to reflect" if people who commit heinous crimes against women like rape, should be given an opportunity to manipulate with the judicial system of the country. He urged that cases of crime against women be tried in fast track courts and within a defined time frame.

Speaking to the media in Parliament, Prasad said, "I would urge today to the investigative bodies and the Judiciary, when the law is very clear that all the crimes against women, including rape should be fast tracked, and decided by the fast track courts in a defined time frame. Today is the time to live a commitment that the timeline shall be followed and due punishment shall be given."

The minister also said that today was a day to feel satisfied that finally justice was delivered in the brutal Delhi gang rape and murder case committed in December, 2012.

"The degree of emotional satisfaction that the tragic daughter of India who suffered untold misery and cruel violence on her body, finally got a closure of justice. All the criminals who committed one of the most reprehensible crime, have been given the capital punishment. I wish this could have been done earlier."

Raising his concern over the delay in the closure of the case, he said, "while we feel satisfaction, today is also the day to reflect by the judiciary, government, civil society and everyone else that should some (people), convicted for capital punishment for a diabolical crime be allowed to manipulate the system, to delay it for seven years."

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Bodies of the four convicts in Nirbhaya rape and murder case were sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital here at 8 a.m. on Friday after they were exectued at 5.30 a.m.

A panel of five doctors conducted the postmortem of the bodies. The panel headed by B.N. Mishra included V.K. Ranga, Jatin Vodwal, R.K. Chaubey and Ajit.

In an interview with IANS, Mishra said: "It will take around four to five hours to conduct the postmortem of all the four bodies. The whole process is filmed."

On the difference between the bodies of the people executed and those who commit suicide, he said: "When a trained hangman executes someone, the neck bone breaks in a different manner while if someone commits suicide it breaks differently. 'Brain stem with instant' is thoroughly examined in the bodies which are executed."

"When a person is executed, his neck bone breaks instantly due to which he faints first and then dies after a few seconds," he added.

When asked that whether the execution was conducted as per the jail manual, he said: "To understand this, we need to see examine the heart. If the heart was still beating after 15-20 minutes of execution then the forensic science believes that the execution was proper."

Stressing on the importance of the role women play in the society, Modi added, "Our Nari Shakti has excelled in every field. Together, we have to build a nation where the focus is on women empowerment, where there is emphasis on equality and opportunity."

The hanging of the four convicts on Friday brought to an end the over seven-year quest for justice by the parents of the young girl who was brutally gang-raped and assaulted by six persons in the heart of the national capital on December 16, 2012. She later succumbed to her injuries.

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) As the night edged towards dawn, the contours of Tihar Jail gradually emerged from the darkness. In an apparent sign of closure to a seven year and three month long quest for justice in one of India's most talked about criminal case --the Nirbhaya gang rape.

After three postponements, the hanging of all four convicts of the Nirbhaya gang rape was fixed for Friday, 5.30 a.m.

In a celebration of the long-pending justice in one of India's most gruesome rape case, people started to assemble outside Tihar Jail as the clock struck 2 a.m. With the Supreme Court also closing doors on the convicts' last-ditch efforts, the crowd outside Tihar began swelling up dramatically.

The wave of emotions outside Tihar was such that even the coronavirus outbreak could not deter people from assembling in large numbers outside the Jail, to show their solidarity with Nirbhaya.

"My wife advised me not to step out amid the coronavirus outbreak, but I could not contain my happiness as justice is being imparted to my sister," said Ravinder Singh Bakshi, a resident of Delhi's Hari Nagar.

A woman, who came from Madhya Pradesh, specially to show solidarity with the victim, said that justice has finally been served. "I have come here to see justice unfold before my eyes," she said.

The joy at justice being served was evident when the crowd started their own countdown with 60 seconds remaining for the scheduled time of hanging.

As the countdown to the hanging of the four death-row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case entered its final phase, the crowd loudly chanted the final countdown; a handful of posters reading "thanks to judiciary" and "the morning of justice" also were propped up outside the Tihar Jail premises.

The moment it was 5.30 a.m., the crowd's countdown reached zero, and a pin drop silence enveloped the crowd outside Tihar for over 10-15 seconds, with people wondering if someone would come out the jail and inform about the hanging. But while no jail official stepped out with any information, the media buzz that all the convicts had been finally hanged, had the crowd erupt in joy.

Later, Director-General of Tihar jail, Sandeep Goel, confirmed that the four convicts -- Vinay, Akshay, Mukesh and Pawan were hanged simultaneously at 5.30 a.m. All the four were declared dead at 6.10 a.m.

At their home in Dwarka, there was a sigh of relief and a sense of closure at Nirbhaya's home. "I am feeling satisfied as my daughter got justice today," Nirbhaya's mother, Asha Devi said after the news of execution broke out.

Following the hanging, at Tihar, Pawan the hangman stated, "I am feeling happy after hanging the four. I had waited for this moment my entire life."

Slogans of 'Nirbhaya Zindabad' were raised, and the Tricolour unfurled by people all round.

"As soon as the news broke that convicts have been hanged, we hit the roads with the Tricolor to extend our tributes to Nirbhaya," Meena Sharma, a local resident, said while waving a flag.

A man also climbed on the railing outside the jail with a poster in his hand which stated about the delay in serving justice to the victim.

"The motive is to showcase the loophole in our judiciary system," Umakant Sharma said.

Over the years, the convicts adopted several manoeuvres to delay the hanging and even succeeded thrice. This time, however, they could not escape the clutches of the judiciary and were hanged to death on Friday.

"This is a big day in the history of the nation. The hanging will give a message to the world that such acts should not be committed," said social activist Yogita Bhayana, who was associated with the case since the beginning.

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) The four Nirbhaya convicts -- Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta -- spent a restless night as they awaited their hanging in the wee hours of Friday. They wanted to see each other, but Tihar Jail authorities denied the permission.

Sources inside the high-security prison, which went into a lockdown mode prior to the most anticipated execution of the four men convicted for the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in 2012, told IANS that at around 12 midnight, the hangman from Meerut, Pawan Jallad, was allowed to see the faces of all the four convicts, whom he was to execute in the next five-and-a-half hours, for the first time.

At 1 a.m., Akshay wanted to meet Mukesh, but he was denied permission by the head warden. He caught a glimpse of the hangman, when he passed by and wanted to know about the new face roaming around. The head warden told him that he was just another prison staff.

Tihar Jail Director General Sandeep Goel confirmed that none of the death row convicts managed to sleep even as their lawyer was making last ditch efforts in the Supreme Court to save them somehow. Vinay had kept sitting in his cell.

At 3.30 a.m. the apex court gave the go ahead for their execution.

By then, paramilitary personnel were deployed outside the Tihar Jail complex in order to prevent any untoward incident, even as the four convicts prepared for their final journey from their cell to the execution platform, more than seven years after their heinous crime led to judicial reforms in India's rape laws.

At 4 a.m., the assistant jailer asked all the four men to take bath and get ready, to which Vinay retorted, sources said.

At 4.15 a.m., they were granted time to read any religious scripture they wanted to. But all of them turned down the proposal.

The four were then served their last breakfast.

At around 4.30 a.m., they prepared to take the long walk to the hanging area.

The four convicts underwent a medical check-up, which established that they were fit to bear the punishment handed out to them. Meanwhile, the jail superintendent also checked for any letter or notice which could have prevented the execution, but no such document was received by the jail authorities.

At 5.20 a.m., with their faces covered with a cotton cloth and hands tied behind their backs, the four convicts were taken to the 'Phansi Kothi' (execution chamber), as the hanging area in Tihar Jail is commonly known. During this time, none of the other prisoners were allowed to leave their respective cells.

The District Magistrate, Medical Examiner, Jail Superintendent and 10 other jail officials were present in the execution chamber.

At 5.25 a.m., a cotton cap with a flap was put on their faces just before they entered the gallows enclosures. Once inside the 'Phansi Kothi', the District Magistrate (DM) asked each of them for their final wish. Tihar sources said that none of the four convicts expressed any last wish.

The DM then counter-signed the 'black' warrant.

The convicts were then mounted on the scaffold and placed directly under the beam to which the ropes were attached. They were now under executioner Pawan's watch, who strapped their legs tightly together and adjusted the rope around their necks.

"The Superintendent then gave the signal and the executioner pushed the lever to release the trap-door," a Tihar source said.

After the execution, the bodies of the four men remained suspended for half-an-hour and were taken down at 6 a.m. after the doctor present announced that "life is extinct".

This was the first time that four convicts were hanged here in one go.

It though was the second incident when four executions were carried out in the country since Independence.

First time it happened in Pune on October 25, 1983 when Rajendra Jakkal, Dilip Sutar, Shantaram Jagtap and Munawar Shah were hanged at the Yerwada central jail for the murder of 10 people between January 1976 to March 1977. Jakkal, Sutar and Jagtap were students of Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya while Shah was their friend studying in a commerce college.

Pawan Jallad, who comes from a family of hangmen, executed the hanging of Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta at Tihar jail.

The Director General of Tihar Jail, Sandeep Goel, Inspector General Rajkumar Sharma, Jail No. 3 Superintendent Sunil and legal officers didn't come out of the jail premises since Wednesday.

After the hanging was executed, Pawan Jallad was sent back to Meerut amid tight security.

"Hopefully Nirbhaya finally will rest at peace as she got justice. Her parent's finally won undeterred fight for justice for their daughter after long legal battle. The four men are finally convicted and hanged this morning of the savage crime caused upon a young medical student," she said.

Sharma added that the case showed the loopholes in the legal system.

"This case also showed us the loopholes of legal system, which the four convicts took advantage of. Today as we know that finally the convicts got hanged, I hope this will play as deterrent for others, and no such case in future should take this long to deliver justice."

She said that Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi in all these years had never lost hope in fight for delivering justice to her daughter.

"Finally Nirbhaya got justice, it was a long painful wait for the parents and for all of us. The doubts that have been lingering in our minds on justice system got cleared," Sharma said.

Nirbhaya was brutally gang-raped in December 2012, which led to her death later.

The four convicts were hanged on Friday morning in Delhi.

A man named Umakant Sharma even climbed on the railing outside the jail with a poster in his hand which rued the delay in serving justice to the victim. "The motive is to highlight the loopholes in our judicial system," Sharma said.

Over the years, the convicts adopted several manoeuvres to delay the hanging and even succeeded thrice. This time, however, they could not escape the clutches of the judiciary.

"This is a big day in the history of the nation. The hangings will send a message to the world that such acts should not be committed," said social activist Yogita Bhayana, who has been associated with the case since its beginning.

The curtains came down at 5.30 a.m. when Akshay, Pawan, Vinay and Mukesh of the six men, who brutally raped a Delhi student on a moving bus on a winter night in December 2012, were finally hanged to death.

Nirbhaya's mother and father have been fighting an ending legal battle to see their end for seven long years.

Speaking to IANS, Asha Devi said, "Justice has been delivered today. Four convicts have been hanged till death. Today's rising sun is dedicated to the daughters of this country.

"Not only Nirbhaya, but the entire country that was shaken to its core on that December 16 night in 2012, was delivered justice."

She has waited with baited breath to see the day when finally her daughter's rapists would be hanged, and Asha Devi could not contain her satisfaction when the confirmation of hanging of four convicts in the gang rape and murder case came in a little after 5.35 a.m. on Friday. A little after 6 a.m. the doctor confirmed that her daughter's attackers were dead.

Speaking to the throng of media personnel waiting outside her residence, Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi said that her faith in the judiciary had been vindicated.

A visibly relieved Asha Devi said that the hangings of the four convicts would send a strong signal for deterrence. "Our fight for security of daughters across the country will continue" she said.

"I returned from the Supreme Court, hugged my daughter's photograph and told her: 'Today, justice has been delivered'."

"I dedicate this day -- March 20 to all the women in the country because #Nirbhaya got justice, today," she said.

She said: "Proud to be known as Nirbhaya's mother. She fought so hard. And I have waited long to see this day. The flaw in our justice system were exposed. But finally all four were hanged in one go. A first of its kind of justice, which will definitely be a lesson to others."

"Will continue this struggle for other daughters in the country," she said and remembered all the unfulfilled dreams of her child, whom she could not save.

Nirbhaya's father too expressed satisfaction at the turn of events, which have been escaping from their grasp for -- justice have been slipping through their fingers as the convicts had made every last ditch attempt to escape the gallows.

"I'm happy and the entire community is happy, the country is happy toady as justice has been delivered," said the father and expressed his gratitude to all -- media, Nirbhaya's friends, people who have fought long and hard alongside his wife and him, the protesters who took out candle marches. He thanked all for making it happen.

Friday morning's hanging of the four convicts brought to an end the seven year quest for justice by the parents of the young girl who was brutally gang raped by six persons in Delhi, in December 2012.

Following the hanging, Pawan (57) said, "For the first time in my life, I'm happy to execute four convicts. I had been waiting for this day for long. I thank God and the Tihar jail administration.

Pawan was chosen by the Tihar Jail administration to hang the four Nirbhaya gang rape-murder convicts.

Pawan is the only "certified" hangman in Uttar Pradesh, attached to the Meerut jail and gets a monthly salary of Rs 3,000.

He has never imagined being anything else and has wanted to be a hangman since he was a child. Pawan Jallad's father was a hangman and so was his grandfather.

Pawan has witnessed hanging since he was an adolescent. His grandfather Laxman and father Kallu were assigned the job of executing Indira Gandhi's assassins in 1989 and he took over after their passing away. His father Kallu hanged dreaded criminals Ranga and Billa too.

About three years ago, he was assigned the task of hanging the Nithari killing accused Surendra Koli but the hanging was put off at the last moment.

Pawan lives on the outskirts of Meerut and does not socialize much.

His family comprises seven members and Pawan said that his son does not wish to follow in his footsteps. He is preparing for a government job and does not want to work at the gallows.

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Senior Tihar Jail officials were busy with the preparations for the execution of all the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case for the last 36 hours.

The Director General of Tihar Jail, Sandeep Goyal, Inspector General Raj Kumar and Jail No. 3 Superintendent Sunil didn't come out of the jail premises since Wednesday as they were busy preparing for the hangins, which finally took place in the early hours of Friday, more than seven years after the gruesome crime was committed in December 2012.

The Tihar administration also asked for extra security ahead of the execution of the four convicts -- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta. Additional forces from West Delhi along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed to maintain the law and order situation in and around the jail premises.

Sources said that hangman Pawan Jallad also didn't sleep for the whole night ahead of the hangings. He placed the four ropes that were used for the hangings at their respective places at 3 a.m. on Friday before executing the death penalties at 5.30 a.m.

The Metropolitan Magistrate and the SDM will now fill the panchnama and the bodies will be sent for postmortem. The Deputy Commissioner and the assigned doctor will sign the death certificates.

As the countdown to the hanging of four death-row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case entered its final phase, the crowd loudly did the final countdown; a handful of posters reading "thanks to judiciary" and "the morning of justice" also were propped up outside the Tihar Jail premises.

The four rapists were finally hanged seven years after they and two others brutally gang raped the 23-year-old physiotherapy student and left her to die by the roadside.

With the execution of the convicts, curtains have finally been brought down on the case which gathered dust for several years.

Over the years, the convicts adopted several manoeuvres to delay the hanging and even succeeded thrice. This time, however, they could not escape the clutches of the judiciary and were hanged till death.

The case pertained to the gruesome gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl by six men in a moving bus on the fateful night of December 16, 2012.

The girl, who was later dubbed as Nirbhaya, and her male friend was assaulted and thrown on the road. The attackers inserted rod into her vagina and ripped her intestines apart. The injuries were so brutal that she succumbed to them thirteen days later.

The gruesome crime shook the conscience of the nation and led to country-wide protests and a change in the country's rape laws.

All the men, including the prime accused and a minor, were nabbed within few days of the incident.

The prime accused, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the Tihar Jail days after the trial began.

The juvenile, who was said to be the most brutal of the attackers, was put in a correctional home for three years and later released. The remaining four men were convicted for the crime on September 13, 2013 and were hanged on Friday in South Asia's largest prison complex. With this, India's daughter has finally got justice.

The four persons convicted for the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student were hanged on the wee hours of Friday.

"My wife advised me not to step out amidst the coronavirus outbreak, but I could not contain my happiness as justice is being imparted to my sister," said Ravinder Singh Bakshi, a resident of Delhi's Hari Nagar.

Another woman, who has come from Madhya Pradesh especially to show solidarity with the victim, said that justice has finally been served. "I have come here to see justice unfold before my eyes," she said.

The huge gathering came amidst curbs imposed by the Delhi government on social gatherings of more than 20 people in a bid to check the spread of coronavirus.

Security has been tightened around the jail premises to keep a check on any untoward incident.

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) After a 45 minute hearing, a special three-judge bench of the Supreme Court in the wee hours of Friday rejected the plea of death row convict Pawan Gupta challenging the rejection of second mercy plea by the President Ram Nath Kovind and seeking stay on the death sentence.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had also trashed the plea of all death row convicts at around 11 p.m.. The entire legal process in the execution of the death sentence has been completed and the hanging of the accused is confirmed at 5.30 a.m..

A special three-judge headed by Justice R Banumathi and comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and A S Bopanna was constituted late in the night to conduct a hearing on Pawan's plea at 2:30 am. The hearing was concluded at 3.15 am.

"The plea is dismissed", said the bench after it did not find any merit in Pawan's petition.

The bench said the petitioner (Pawan) is not right in contending that the plea of juvenility has not been considered by the courts, instead it was duly considered and then rejected by various courts.

"Consistent view of this court is that scope for review of President's decision in mercy petitions is very limited", said the bench.

On argument that Pawan did not share common intention to murder in the case, the top court observed that all facts were considered all and then he was found guilty and convicted.

"This cannot be a ground for judicial review of President's decision," said the court dismissing Pawan' plea.

Pawan's lawyer cited the assassination of ex-Punjab CM Beant Singh, and insisted that Nirbhaya case convicts could also be granted remission like convicts in Singh's assassination.

Advocate A P Singh representing Pawan Gupta soughy deferment of execution for 1-2 days, as his client would be able to record statement in an assault case. And, at the end of the hearing, Pawan's counsel insisted that the top court should allow family members of his client and Akshay Singh to meet them for 5-10 minutes before hanging.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta contended before the court that the jail manual rules don't permit convicts to meet family members before death sentence execution.

"Our judicial system and executive government has ensured justice for all daughters of the country. This example will be a strong and imperishable deterrent", said Mehta after the hearing.

The condemned convicts -- Vinay, Akshay, Pawan and Mukesh -- are slated to be executed at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, more than seven years after the crime took place in the heart of the national capital.

Even though the four men adopted all the manoeuvres to delay the hangings, justice will finally be imparted to India's daughter -- Nirbhaya -- on Friday.

The case pertains to the gruesome gang-rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, later dubbed as Nirbhaya, by six men in a moving bus on December 16, 2012. Her male friend was also assaulted following which the duo was thrown on the road. She succumbed to her injuries thirteen days later.

The attackers inserted rod inside her vagina and ripped her intestines apart. The brutality of the crime shook the nation to the core, leading to wide-spread protests and a drastic change in the country's rape laws.

The Delhi Police expedited the case and arrested all the convicts, including a juvenile, within a few days of the incident. The case of the minor accused was transferred to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).

On January 3, a chargesheet was filed against the five adults -- Mukesh, Vinay, Akshay, Pawan and Ram Singh -- for murder, attempt to murder, gang-rape, kidnapping, unnatural offences and dacoity. This came a day after a fast-track court (FTC) was set up for sexual offence cases.

On March 11, accused Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Tihar Jail. Five months later, on August 31, 2013, the JJB convicted the minor for gang-rape and murder and sent him to a three-year term at a probation home.

Ten days pursuant to that, a trial court convicted four others of 'grave offences', including gang-rape, unnatural offence and murder of the girl and attempt to murder her male friend. On September 13, the court awarded death penalty to all the four convicts.

The convicts then knocked on the doors of the Delhi High Court challenging the order of the trial court. However, the court on March 13, 2014 gave them no relief and upheld the order of the lower court.

On May 5, 2017, they moved the Supreme Court, but a bench headed by Justice Dipak Mishra upheld the death penalty awarded to them.

The apex court observed that the offence created a "Tsunami of shock" and fell under the category of "rarest of rare".

The convicts then availed the legal and constitutional remedies of review -- curative and mercy petitions -- slowly and steadily over the span of three years. Their execution got deferred thrice this year due to the pending remedies, but eventually they were all rejected.

Pawan Gupta was the last convict to exhaust all his remedies on March 4, following which the court issued a death warrant against all the four convicts. They are now slated to be hanged on Friday at 5:30 a.m., when justice will be finally imparted to India's own daughter.

New Delhi, March 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi High Court on Thursday upheld the death warrants issued by a lower court scheduling the hanging of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case at 5.30 a.m. on Friday.

Dismissing the plea filed by the convicts through advocate A.P. Singh, a division bench of Justices Manmohan and Sanjiv Narula said: "Writ petition bereft of merits, dismissed."

During the course of hearing, Singh argued that the number of petitions have been filed by the convicts and are pending as of date.

He further submitted that if the death warrant is executed, the said proceedings including the divorce petition filed by the wife of Akshay, one of the four convicts, as well as the petition filed by another convict, Pawan Gupta before the National Human Right Commission and his criminal complaint will remain pending.

The advocate also argued that journalist Ajit Anjum had revealed that Nirbhaya's friend, and the case's star witness had taken a lot of money to frame the accused. He also cited a Tihar jail official's book "Black Warrant" to claim there has been miscarriage of justice in regards to his clients.

Singh also argued that Pawan Gupta was a juvenile, citing the school leaving certificate.

Senior standing counsel Rahul Mehra, appearing for the Delhi Police, argued that the plea of juvenility has been rejected by the trial court, the HC and the SC.

Mehra also contends that the allegation of one of the appellants sustaining injury during his stay in the jail has been rejected by the SC by the order dated March 19, 2020.

He also contended that the statement of journalist or the former jail official cannot be considered in the present petition as firstly, no such foundation has been made in the petition.

Shams Khwaja, another counsel for the convicts, argued state that the President has acted with prejudice as he has publicly stated his sentiments on death row convicts of sexual assault.

While passing the order, the court observed that as far as plea of juvenility dismissed by the three convicts, it can't be raised at this stage.
