67th National Film Awards announced; Sikkim wins award for Most Film Friendly State

Kangana Ranaut wins Best Actress award for Manikarnika-The Queen of Jhansi and Panga

Delhi 22 MAR 2021 (SocialNews.XYZ): The Jury for the 67^th National Film Awards announced the winners for the year 2019 here today. Ahead of the announcement, the Chairperson and other Jury members called on the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekar and presented him with the selections for the Awards. The Jury comprised of eminent filmmakers and film personalities from across the Indian cine-world. The awards were announced by Shri N. Chandra, Chairman, Central Panel, Shri Arun Chaddha, Chairman, Non-Feature Films Jury, Shri Shaji N Karun, Chairman, Most Film Friendly State Jury and Shri Saibal Chatterjee, Chairman Best Writing on Cinema Jury.

An Engineered Dream, a hindi film has bagged the award for Best Non-Feature Film while Marakkar-Arabikkadalinte-Simham has taken home the award for Best Feature Film. Kastoori has been awarded Best Children’s Film award. Shrikshetra- Ru-Sahijata has won the best Arts and Culture Film.

Sikkim has bagged the award for being Most Film Friendly State. Savani Ravindra has won Best Female Playback Singer for her song Raan Petala from the Marathi movie Bardo. Gireesh Gangadharan has been awarded Best Cinematography for the Malayalam film Jallikkettu.

Sixth Sense Horror Film Festival, India’s first and only horror film fest, is back with its second edition. A brainchild of Shaunak Sirrole, the festival will feature and showcase some of the BEST horror shorts from India and all around the world. Beside young filmmakers from all around the world, our festival also welcomes distinguished professors and professionals in the field of film pedagogy and filmmaking.

The Sixth Sense HorrorFilm Festival has called all filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers to submit their short films showcasing the horror genre.

The duration of the film should not be more than 15 minutes and can be submitted in any format. The subject must be presenting horror /thriller/slasher/sci-fi genre only and all the submissions should be subtitled in English. The films can be submitted online on Filmfreeway, Withoutabox and festhome.

The Sixth Sense Horror Film Festival is scheduled to be held from October 29 - October 31 at in Mumbai. The three-day film festival is dedicated to honouring and celebrating the legacy of short horror films. It aims to appreciate and support established and upcoming filmmakers dedicated to the horror genre.

The Submission deadlines are as follows:

Opening Date - April 01, 2018

Early Deadline - April 30,2018

Regular Deadline - June 30, 2018

Final Deadline - July 31, 2018

Late Deadline - August 31, 2018

Notification Date - October 15, 2018

Event Date - October 29-31, 2018

Last year, Mr. Jeffrey Reddick writer of Final Destination was the “Guest of Honour” and National Award Winning Indian filmmaker, Mr. Apurva Asrani was the “Chief Guest” of the event. In the inaugural year, we received an outstanding 250 entries from which we screened 50 best films selected by the esteemed panel.This year “Paranormal Activity” fame writer Christopher Landon, Don Mancini and Puco Plaza are expected to grace the event with their presence.

If the last few years have taught us anything, it is that horror films could be on track to becoming more globally appreciated. Those of us who have been fans of the genre for years have always been well conscious of its arty and social connotation. The raison d'être of Sixth Sense Horror Film Festival is getting the genre some of the high-brow acknowledgment that it has long since deserved.

The aims of this year's edition of the festival are:

• Positioning the festival as a “one of its kind” in India.
• Creating strong and productive connections in communication and cooperation between film authors and their colleagues who have yet to be recognized around the world
• Initiating a completely new attitude towards horror genre.

'సంతోషం' సినీ వారపత్రిక ఆగస్టు 2 పుట్టినరోజు సందర్భంగా అదే నెలలో 14 సంవత్సరాలుగా ఫిలిం అవార్డ్స్‌ను, కొన్నేళ్లుగా 'సౌత్‌ ఇండియన్‌ సంతోషం ఫిలిం అవార్డ్స్‌'ను నిర్వహిస్తూ వస్తున్నారు సంతోషం ఎడిటర్‌ అండ్‌ పబ్లిషర్‌ సురేష్‌ కొండేటి. పద్నాల్గవ సౌత్‌ ఇండియన్‌ ఫిలిం అవార్డుల ప్రధానోత్సవం ఆగస్టు 14వ తేదీన హైదరాబాద్‌ గచ్చిబౌలి స్టేడియంలో అంగరంగ వైభవంగా జరిగాయి. ఈ కార్యక్రమానికి ముఖ్యఅతిథిగా దర్శకరత్న డా|| దాసరి నారాయణరావు విచ్చేశారు. ఈ సందర్భంగా ఆయన మాట్లాడుతూ... 'గతంలో ఫిలిం అవార్డులను రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం నిర్వహించేది. ఇప్పుడు మర్చిపోయింది. ప్రైవేటు సంస్థలు ఆ బాధ్యతను చేపట్టి అవార్డులను ఇస్తున్నాయి. కానీ అవి కంటిన్యూ చేయలేకపోయాయి. కానీ సురేష్‌ కొండేటి ఎన్నో కష్టనష్టాలకోర్చి, ఒక్కడుగా 14 ఏళ్లపాటు ఈ అవార్డుల వేడుకను నిర్వహిస్తున్నాడు. ఇది సాధారణ విషయం కాదు. తనది కార్పొరేట్‌ కంపెనీ కాదు. అయినా ఉత్తమ కళాకారులను ప్రోత్సహించాలనే లక్ష్యంతో ఈ కార్యక్రమాన్ని ఒక బాధ్యతగా నిర్వహిస్తున్నాడు. ఒక కళాకారునికి ఒక అవార్డు వచ్చిందంటే ఆ ఏడాది అతను చేసిన కృషికి గుర్తించి ఇచ్చిన అవార్డు. అటువంటి అవార్డును చూసుకుని ఆ కళాకారుడు ఎంతో ఆనందపడతాడు.

సంతోషం సురేష్‌ను చూస్తే నాకు ఆనందమేస్తుంది. ఈ సురేష్‌ను చూస్తే వీడా! ఇన్నేళ్లపాటు అవార్డులను నిర్వహిస్తున్నది? అనిపిస్తుంది. సురేష్‌ సినిమాపై ఇష్టంతో చిత్రరంగానికి వచ్చాడు. వచ్చి డాన్సర్‌ అయ్యాడు. అప్పట్లో నేను ప్రారంభించిన డాన్స్‌ ఇనిస్టిట్యూట్‌లో శిక్షణ పొంది నా చేతుల మీదుగా అవార్డును కూడా అందుకున్నాడు. ఆ తర్వాత జర్నలిస్టు అయ్యాడు. సంతోషం పత్రికను స్టార్ట్‌ చేసి దానితోపాటు అవార్డులను కూడా స్టార్ట్‌ చేసి దిగ్విజయంగా 14 ఏళ్లు పూర్తి చేసిన సురేష్‌ని చూసి నేను గర్వపడతాను. ఎందుచేతంటే తను మా పాలకొల్లువాడే. సురేష్‌ను నేను మనస్ఫూర్తిగా అభినందిస్తున్నాను' అన్నారు సభికుల హర్షధ్వనుల మధ్య.

ముందుగా ప్రసాద్‌ ల్యాబ్‌ అధినేత, నిర్మాత అక్కినేని రమేష్‌ ప్రసాద్‌ మాట్లాడుతూ..'మా నాన్నగారి గురించి అందరికీ తెలుసు. ఎల్వీప్రసాద్‌గారు తన జీవితాన్నంతా సినిమాకే అంకితం చేశారు. నిర్మాతగా, దర్శకునిగా చిత్ర పరిశ్రమకు ఎనలేని సేవలను అందించారు. మేము కూడా ఆయన బాటలోనే నడుస్తున్నాం. అలాగే సురేష్‌ కొండేటిగారు 14 ఏళ్లుగా అవార్డులను ఇస్తూ చిత్ర పరిశ్రమకు తన సేవలను అందిస్తున్నారు. ఆయనను హృదయపూర్వకంగా అభినందిస్తున్నాను' అన్నారు.

ప్రఖ్యాత సీనియర్‌ నిర్మాత కాట్రగడ్డ ప్రసాద్‌ మాట్లాడుతూ.. The gala has announced that in the second year of the honour, the Book Award for Excellence in Writing on Cinema is being opened to Hindi writers as well, read a statement from the organisers.

The award covers works of fiction, graphic novel, creative non-fiction, reportage, analysis, written in English and Hindi. It seeks entries that showcase nuanced and imaginative film writing and publishing in South Asia.

Also, book-length works written by authors from the sub-continent and published by an Indian publishing house in print format between August 1, 2015 and August 1, 2016 are eligible for the award.

"The Book Award is becoming stronger in its second year and will now also recognise and celebrate excellence in writing on cinema in Hindi. The award remains steadfast in its intention to encourage a deeper engagement with our cinema via commentary, documentation and analysis," said leading publisher and editor Arpita Das, who has curated the award.

Anupama Chopra, festival director, is thrilled with the development.

“We hope that this award will encourage more writers to look at cinema as a subject. I’ve written several books on film and I know the struggle it entails. We hope this award helps to alleviate some of it,” she said.

Jio MAMI's Mumbai Film Festival will be held in Mumbai from October 20-27.

Madrid, June 26 (IANS) Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh on Saturday night bagged the Best Actor (Female) and Best Actor (Male) trophy at the 17th IIFA extravaganza for their performance in "Piku" and "Bajirao Mastani" respectively.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the Best Director for "Bajirao Mastani" and "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" was named the Best Film at a glittering ceremony here.

The main awards night of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) celebrations saw a melange of tinsel town celebrities all decked up to soak in the colours, magic and revelry that Bollywood exudes. There were performances, humourous acts and an entertaining anchoring job by Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar, who made a quirky entry on donkeys.

In the Best Actor in Supporting Role category, Anil Kapoor won the award among men for "Dil Dhadakne Do", and Priyanka Chopra among the women clinched the honour for "Bajirao Mastani".

Priyanka -- who has scaled international presence with her role in American TV series "Quantico" and has also landed a part in Hollywood film "Baywatch" -- was bestowed a Special Award: Woman of the Year.

The multi-talented actress also took to the stage and performed on songs that she has voiced herself.

"Bajirao Mastani" emerged as the big winner. Apart from Bhansali and Ranveer's accolades, the film won Best Cinematography (Sudeep Chatterjee), Best Production Design (Saloni Dhatrak, Sriram Iyengar, Sujeet Sawant), Best Choreography (Remo D'souza for "Pinga"), Best Action (Shyam Kaushal) and Best Sound Design (Bishwadeep Chatterjee and Nihar Ranjal Samal).

There were more awards for the movie: Best Background Score (Sanchit Balhara), Best Special Effects (Prasad Sutara), Best Costume Designing (Anju Modi and Maxima Basu) and Best Song Engineer (Tanay Gajjar for "Deewani Mastani".

Among the debutants, Vicky Kaushal took home the laurels for "Masaan" and among the ladies, Bhumi Pednekar won it for her endearing performance in "Dum Laga Ke Haisha".

The Jodi of the Year Award went to Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty for "Hero" at the event which also saw Sonakshi Sinha, Deepika and Tiger Shroff take to the stage for mesmerising performances.

Tiger, a flexible dancer, paid a tribute to late King of Pop Michael Jackson with his moves.

Darshan Kumar was awarded for his negative role in "NH10", and Deepak Dobriyal was honoured for Best Comic Role in "Tanu Weds Manu Returns".

Amitabh Bachhan and Deepika starrer "Piku" got the Best Story and Best Dialogue Awards for Juhi Chaturvedi.

In the singing category, the mellifluos song "Moh moh ke dhaage" was a winner. Monali Thakur and Papon won the Best Playback Singer (Female) and Best Playback Singer (Male) for the track, while Varun Grover won for penning its lyrics.

The Best Screenplay went to Kabir Khan, Parveez Shaikh, V. Vijayendra Prasad for "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", Best Editing (A Sreekar Prasad for "Talvar"), Best Sound Mixing (Ajay Kumar PB for "Badlapur") and Best Make-up (Vikram Gaikwad for Datto in "Tanu Weds Manu Returns")

The four-day gala -- which celebrates the magic of Indian cinema at an international destination every year -- began on June 23. Madrid is the fourth European destination to host the IIFA.

Mumbai, June 18 (IANS) Filmmaker Raam Reddy's acclaimed Kannada film "Thithi" has bagged the top awards at the ongoing 19th Shanghai International Film Festival and the filmmaker says the response from the Chinese audience for the film has been "overwhelming".

"Thithi" won the Best Film and Best Script Writers in the Asia New Talent Awards at the festival in Shanghai. Other films nominated in the Best Film Category were "One Night Only", "Hana's Miso Soup", "Land of the Little People" and "Detective Chinatown".

"Shanghai is the first place the film is being screened at Asia outside of India, and I was really keen to see how people from china and different parts of Asia react to the film. The jury was from China, Japan and Korea and they unanimously loved this film. The response from the chinese audience has been overwhelming as well," Reddy said in a statement.

"It is hard to imagine the diversity of people, who have seen and accepted 'Thithi', and I really couldn't be happier with the experience here," he added.

Ere Gowda, who has co-written the film with Reddy, is "happy" that people around the world have loved the film".

"Thithi" is na dramatic comedy about how three generations of sons react to the death of the oldest in their clan, a man named Century Gowda -- a locally renowned, highly cantankerous 101-year-old man.

Set in a small village in Karnataka, the three story lines intertwine before converging at Century Gowda's 'Thithi' -- the final funeral celebration, 11 days after a death.

Produced by Pratap Reddy and Sunmin Park, "Thithi" has already been screened in over 12 international and national film festivals and won 13 awards.

It recently won the 2016 National Award for Best Feature film in Kannada and also won three awards at the Karnataka State Film Awards 2016 -- Best Film, Best Dialogues and Best Supporting Actress. The film was also selected for 2016 New Directors/New Films.

London, May 9 (IANS) In another strong year for British television, historical drama “Wolf Hall” was declared the best drama series and actor Mark Rylance received the leading actor honour at the BAFTA Television Awards here.

The ceremony, which was hosted by Graham Norton at the Royal Festival Hall here on Sunday, also saw Shane Meadows’ “This Is England ‘90” and “Peter Kay’s Car Share” win awards, reports variety.com.

“This Is England ’90", the latest instalment in Shane Meadows’ Sheffield-set drama, nabbed awards for best miniseries, beating out “Doctor Foster,” Working Title’s “London Spy” and Sky’s “The Enfield Haunting” as well as best supporting actress for Chanel Cresswell. It was nominated for three awards going into the event.

British comedian Peter Kay snapped up the award for best male comedy performance for “Peter Kay’s Car Share” as well as the BAFTA for scripted comedy.

Suranne Jones won in the leading actress category for her portrayal of a wife betrayed by her husband’s infidelity in “Doctor Foster” while Tom Courtenay’s performance in “Unforgotten” earned him the award for supporting actor, his third BAFTA in total.

Amazon Studios’ dramedy “Transparent”, which sees a transgender parent coming out to her family, snapped up the award for best international program, beating out “The Good Wife,” “Narcos” and “Spiral".

Comedy writers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson were honoured with a BAFTA fellowship.

“Poldark,” based on the Winston Graham tomes and adapted by Debbie Horsfield, snapped up the Radio Times Audience Award, the only award of the ceremony voted by members of the public.

The Special Award in Honour of Alan Clarke was presented to comedian Lenny Henry in recognition of his outstanding contribution to television during a career that has so far spanned 40 years.

The star-studded event saw the likes of Idris Elba, Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Tom Hiddleston, Josh Hartnett and Hugh Bonneville grace the red carpet on a markedly sunny evening here.

Los Angeles, April 12 (IANS) Director Neeraj Ghaywan's "Masaan" and Leena Yadav's "Parched" were awarded at the 14th annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA)here.

Actor Sanjay Mishra bagged the award for Best Actor for his work in "Masaan" under Grand Jury category and "Parched" won the award for Best Feature under Audience Choice Awards category, read a statement.

This year, the festival showcased nearly 30 films including features, documentaries, and shorts at ArcLight Hollywood here.

It also featured the North American premiere of Anu Menon’s feature “Waiting” starring actress Kalki Koechlin, who was in attendance at the ceremony. The film also features actor Naseeruddin Shah in a lead role.

While director Vetrimaaran's “Visaranai”, a Tamil thriller film based on the novel "Lock Up" by M. Chandrakumar, received Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature, the Best Short award was bagged by “Playgrounds”.

The Best Actress award honoured actresses Tannishtha Chatterjee, Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla and Lehar Khan for their work in “Parched”.

Special jury mentions were made for both “Masaan” and Hansal Mehta's “Aligarh”.

Referring to the decision of awarding “Visaranai”, the jury said: “This film took us to a very specific time and place while also shedding light on a universal phenomena of displacement and vulnerability.”

Honourable mentions were given to Payal Sethi’s “Leeches” for the performances by its two lead actors, Sayani Gupta and Preeti Golacha, as well as “The Manliest Man”, for director Anuj Gulati’s cinematic vision.

The prestigious 2016 narrative film jurors were: filmmaker Shonali Bose; features editor at Variety, Shalini Dore; and international consultant to independent filmmakers and film festivals, Alesia Weston.

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (IANS) "The Revenant" had a golden run at the 88th Academy Awards, where its lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio broke his Oscar jinx by winning the best actor trophy and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu was named best director. The gala night saw British filmmaker of Indian origin Asif Kapadia winning for "Amy"; late India-born British actor Saeed Jaffrey getting an 'In memoriam' honour and Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra taking to the stage as a star presenter.

DiCaprio, who had been nominated for the golden statuette four times for his acting earlier, took home his first Academy Award in the Actor in a Leading Role category for his power-packed performance in "The Revenant". He rightfully received a standing ovation and accepted the honour with an impactful speech, in which he addressed climate change.

It was also a first for Brie Larson when she won an Oscar in the Actress in a Leading Role category for her portrayal of a kidnapped girl imprisoned by a psychopath in "Room".

The big surprise came when "Spotlight" -- a movie which shines the spotlight on journalism and a story of uncovering a child molestation scandal -- won the Best Picture title at the ceremony held at the world-famous Dolby Theatre here on Sunday night.

However, the maximum awards went to George Miller's directorial "Mad Max: Fury Road" that picked up six trophies -- Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hair Styling, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design categories.

The Supporting Actor category saw English actor Mark Rylance defeating Sylvester Stallone to win the Academy Award for Steven Spielberg's cold war drama "Bridge of Spies", backed by Indian businessman Anil Ambani-led Reliance Entertainment; and Swedish actress Alicia Vikander won in the same category for women, for her role in "The Danish Girl".

The awards ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre here, was hosted by actor-comedian Chris Rock who tackled the 'lack of diversity' and #OscarsSoWhite controversy, in a light-hearted manner -- drawing mixed reactions.

For India, while Marathi film "Court", the country's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film, did not make it to the final nomination list this year, there were proud moments for the country in abundance.

Priyanka Chopra looked stunning in an elegant white gown, a creation by Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad. Besides flaunting a perfect red carpet appearance, she exuded confidence as she presented the Oscar in the Best Film Editing category to "Mad Max: Fury Road" along with Hollywood star Liev Schreiber.

Also presenting an award at the event was British actor of Indian origin Dev Patel, while London-based filmmaker of Indian origin Asif Kapadia bagged the Best Documentary Feature Oscar for "Amy", based on the life of late singer Amy Winehouse.

However, Indian-American Pixar artist Sanjay Patel's animated short "Sanjay's Super Team", which tells the story of an immigrant community and "a family of colour", lost the Oscar to Chilean film "Bear Story".

There was a Malayalee angle too in Sajan Skaria, who worked as the character supervisor in "Inside Out", which was named the Best Animated Feature Film.

Also, Indian-born British actor Saeed Jaffrey was remembered in the annual "In Memoriam" montage, along with Alan Rickman, David Bowie and Leonard Nimoy.

For Pakistan, it was time for celebrations as filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won the Oscar for Best Documentary-Short Subject for her project based on honour killing titled "A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness". It is her second Oscar win, and she said the fact that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is hoping to change laws around honour killing following the success of her documentary, shows the "power of the film".

The night of the glitz and glamour would have been incomplete without soulful music. Sam Smith performed Oscar winning song "Writing's on the Wall" from the James Bond movie "Spectre", while The Weeknd performed Oscar nominated song "Earned it" from "Fifty Shades of Grey", and Lady Gaga called for an end to rape culture with a rendition of her "Till it happens to you".

Other star presenters at the Oscars included Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon, Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. In fact, "Titanic" star Kate Winslet sparkled in accessories by NIRAV MODI jewels, an Indian luxury brand with a global presence.

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (IANS) Alejandro G. Inarritu has grabbed the Oscar for Best Director for "The Revenant" at the 88th Academy Awards taking place here on Sunday.

He was nominated alongside Adam McKay for "The Big Short"; George Miller for "Mad Max: Fury Road"; Lenny Abrahamson for "Room" and Tom McCarthy for "Spotlight".

"The Revenant", a revenge tale, features Leonardo DiCaprio braving icy elements to tell the 19th-century survival tale about a fur trapper left for dead after being mauled by a bear.

During his acceptance speech, Inarritu said making the film "has been the most difficult journey that she has embarked myself."

"I have to say that it's not about the budget or the genre or the ambition or the size of the film. Every film is so difficult to make. But I have to tell that in my experience this has been the most difficult journey that I have embarked myself. But I was lucky to be saved and rescued by the incredible crew, cast, producers, that we struggled for so many months in low temperatures and very difficult conditions to make this film happen.

"Most importantly the cast, and the hero, Leo (Leonardo DiCaprio). You are the guy, you make(audio cuts out) the best experience of my life. The best in the world," he further added.

He closed his speech with a call to "make sure once and forever that the color of the skin becomes as irrelevant as the length of our hair."

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (IANS) Grammy Award-winning singer Sam Smith picked up the Best Original Song Oscar for "Writing's on the Wall" from the James Bond movie "Spectre". He dedicated his first Academy Award to the LGBT community on Sunday here.

The British star also performed the James Bond theme song, whose music and lyrics were given by Jimmy Napes and Smith, at the ceremony hosted by Chris Rock.

Smith beat out frontrunner singer Lady Gaga for the win.

"I actually can't breathe right now. Gaga you're incredible," he said while accepting the award.

"I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world . I stand here tonight as a proud gay man. I hope we can stand all together as equals one day."

Legendary composer Ennio Morricone won Original Score Oscar for "The Hateful Eight".

This is the sixth Academy Award nomination for Morricone.

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (IANS) Hungary's "Son Of Saul" received the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre here on Sunday.

Directed by Laszlo Nemes, the story goes back to October 1944. Saul Auslander is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, a group of Jewish prisoners forced to lead other inmates in Auschwitz-Birkenau to their deaths and dispose of their bodies in the crematoriums. One day, Saul finds a young boy and, taking him for his son, tries to arrange for a proper Jewish funeral for him.

"Son of Saul" marked Hungary's second Oscar win in the foreign language category.

The other contenders for the award were "Mustang" (France), "A War" (Denmark), "Embrace of the Serpent" (Colombia) and "Theeb" (Jordan).

Indian filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane's debut Marathi film "Court", India's entry for Best Foreign Language Film, did not make it to the nominations' list of this year's Oscars.

Her film, "A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness", is about Saba Maqsood, whose only "fault was falling in love". It follows her journey for justice after she survives being shot and thrown in a canal by her family members for marrying a man of her choice.

For the 88th Academy Award ceremony, Pakistan's leading fashion label, Sana Safinaz have created a bespoke ensemble for Obaid-Chinoy, complemented by custom jewellery exclusively designed for Sharmeen for the occasion by Kiran Fine Jewellery.

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (IANS) Indian-American Pixar artist Sanjay Patel's animated short "Sanjay's Super Team", which tells the story of an immigrant community and "a family of color", lost the Oscar to Chilean film "Bear Story" here on Sunday.

The team of "Bear Story" lifted the Oscar -- the iconic nude statuette that looks more toned with hair and jawline refined this year - for Best Animated Short Film.

The short, by Gabriel Osorio, tells the story of a melancholy old bear.

The other nominees were "World of Tomorrow", helmed by Don Hertzfeldt, Richard Williams's "Prologue" and "We Can't Live Without Cosmos", directed by Konstantin Bronzit.

While the "Minions" stars Bob, Kevin and Stuart presented the award to "Bear Story" makers, the characters Woody and Buzz of "Toy Story", which has completed 20 years, gave away the trophy to makers of Disney-Pixar 3D computer-animated film "Inside Out".

The story tells the story of 11-year-old Riley and her parents who move to a new city. It's up to Riley's five main emotions -- joy, sadness, fear, anger, and disgust -- to help her adjust.

Joy and sadness are accidentally launched on a journey through Riley's brain to preserve her core memories, and as the duo races back to headquarters, fear, anger and disgust must figure out how to guide Riley.

"Inside Out" defeated films "Anomalsia", "Boy and The World","Shaun The Sheep" and "When Marnie Was There" to win the Best Animated Feature Film award at the ceremony.

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (IANS) Mark Rylance was named as the Best Supporting Actor at the 88th Academy Awards ceremony here on Sunday night for Steven Spielberg's cold war drama "Bridge of Spies", which was backed by Indian businessman Anil Ambani-led Reliance Entertainment Film.

The annual film gala was held at the Dolby Theatre here, and the award was handed to Rylance by last year's Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette.

Rylance bagged his first Oscar after beating out big names Christian Bale (The Big Short), Tom Hardy (The Revenant), Mark Ruffalo in (Spotlight), and Sylvester Stallone (Creed).

"I've always just adored stories: hearing them, seeing them, being in them," he said, thanking Spielberg.

"Unlike some of the leaders we're being presented with these days, he leads with such love that he's surrounded by masters in every craft," he said, quipping that acting alongside Tom Hanks "clearly helps".

Rylance, who plays role of a Soviet spy involved in a dangerous exchange in the cold war thriller, concluded the speech by saying that "It's a wonderful time to be an actor and I'm proud to be part of it."

Oscar for Best Cinematography went to Emmanuel Lubezki for "The Revenant" leaving behind "Carol", "The Hateful Eight", "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Sicario".

"This is incredible. I want to share it with the cast and crew. I want to share with Leo, for the great performance," Lubezki said while accepting the award.

The trophy for the Best Sound Editing went to aceMad Max: Fury Road" defeating "The Martian", aceThe Revenant", "Sicario" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo took home the Oscar in Best Sound Mixing category for "Mad Max: Fury Road".

Jenkins said: "To George Miller, you're the heart and soul of all this. We can't say enough about you, thank you, thank you, thank you for giving us the opportunity. To Warner Bros., to all of our friends there and the people that support us. And most of all to our families, to our wives, to Jeanne and to Sue, to our families, to James up in the cheap seats. Thank you all very much."

George Miller's directorial "Mad Max: Fury Road" turned out to be a big winner at the annual film award ceremony, where Indian actress Priyanka Chopra was a star presenter.

"Ex Machina" bagged the trophy in the Best Visual Effects category. The film was vying for the award with "Mad Max: Fury Roada, "The Martian", "The Revenant" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (PTI) Indo-British filmmaker Asif Kapadia won the best documentary Oscar for "Amy", a poignant examination of singer Amy Winehouse's life and her tragic death at the age of 27.

Kapadia, who had already won the Golden Globe and Bafta awards for the documentary, paid tribute to Winehouse, who died in 2011 following a battle with drug and alcohol.

"Thank you the Academy for showing love to the film. We wanted to show who Amy really was, a funny intelligent, witty and a special girl," Kapadia said.

Producer James Gay-Rees said the award was for all the fans and followers of Winehouse, whose support she always wanted.

Kapadia's documentary saw off competition from "Cartel Land", "The Look of Silence", "What Happened Miss Simone?", "Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom".

The film has been critics favourite since making its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Though the singer's father Mitch distanced himself from the documentary, calling it a disappointment.

Kapadia, 44, is known for directing "Senna" in 2012 and Irrfan Khan-starrer "The Warrior" in 2003.

Los Angeles, Feb 29 (PTI) Disney-Pixar's much-appreciated "Inside Out", an adventure epic set inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl, won the best animated feature Oscar at the 88th Academy Awards here.

With sequences devoted to showing abstract thinking and explaining why people forget some things but remember others, was a tricky concept to sell, especially to kids, but the feature gained blockbuster status upon its release.

The Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera-directed film wasn't just one of Pixar's best films, but it was one of the best reviewed and most well liked films of 2015.

"It's important to watch our kids to grow up. There are days when you feel sad but that's nothing you can choose. But make stuff. Make films, draw, write. It will make a world of difference," Docter said while accepting his trophy.

Many critics thought "Inside Out" stood a good shot for best picture nod at Oscars as well.

The most expensive film in the category, "Inside Out", had a reported budget of USD 175 million.

The movie saw off competition from Brazilian film "Boy and the World", "Anomalisa", "Shaun the Sheep Movie" and Japanese animation film "When Marnie Was There".

Pixar has dominated the category since 2003, when "Finding Nemo" won, followed by "The Incredibles," "Ratatouille," "Wall-E," "Up," "Toy Story 3" and "Brave."

"The Good Dinosaur" joins "Cars 2" and "Monsters University" as the only Pixar films that have not have been nominated since the category was created in 2001.

Disney Animation has won the last two animated Oscars with "Frozen" and "Big Hero 6."

Along with Poehler as Joy, "Inside Out" also starred voice-over work by Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Bill Hader as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger and Mindy Kaling as Disgust with Kaitlyn Dias as 11-year old Riley Anderson.

New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) Sanjay Patel's animated short, "Sanjay's Super Team", which tells the story of an immigrant community and "a family of colour", is up against movies like "Bear Story" and "World of Tomorrow" for the Best Animated Short Film at this year's Oscars. The Indian-American Pixar artist and director says it feels special just to be in the company of "incredibly deserving" nominees.

The world is eagerly waiting to see who will walk away with the prestigious statuette at the 88th Academy Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on February 28. And Indians have a reason to cheer as Patel, who has roots in Gujarat, is pitted against "Bear Story", directed by Gabriel Osorio, "World of Tomorrow", helmed by Don Hertzfeldt, Richard Williams's "Prologue" and "We Can't Live Without Cosmos", directed by Konstantin Bronzit.

"I was confident (of winning) until I saw the other nominees. I became even less confident after I met the nominees. They are so incredibly deserving. All the films are so unique and special. It feels special just to be in that company," Patel told IANS over the phone from Los Angeles.

The US film production studio Disney-Pixar's film shows a boy, modelled on Patel, who wants to watch superhero cartoons on television. It goes on to present the boy's daydreams -- bored with his father's religious meditation -- who imagines Hindu gods as superheroes.

"John Lasseter (chief creative officer, Disney-Pixar) was the one who gave me the confidence and permission (to make the film). I had a story about a little boy from India who didn't have a father and it was more about him being absorbed in western comics and kind of ignoring the stories from his own culture. I told that story to John. He liked it. Then he asked me about how I grew up.

"I told him about my experience with my father. John straight away loved the idea. The same ideas got communicated, but it got richer and more universal. Initially, the concept was something that may be only a certain amount of people might have been able to relate to. But the idea of generational struggle between a young person and his parents is way more universal and emotional," he said.

He feels proud that Pixar was "so supportive in letting me tell a story from an immigrant community... a story of family of colour and give me that opportunity to tell the truth".

Born in Britain to Gujarati parents, Patel moved to the United States in the 1980s. The 41-year-old joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1996 as an animator on "A Bug's Life", and has animated on many of Pixar's feature films, including "Ratatouille", "Cars" and "Toy Story 3".

Patel also storyboarded extensively for "Monster's Inc.", "The Incredibles" and "Toy Story 2".

"My father has always been proud of me. The truth is I was always very embarrassed of him... of his Indianness. So, I am really proud that my father was patient for me to grow up, for me to come to appreciate who we really are," said Patel.

In fact, his "big wish" is to visit India with his parents.

"My dream is to... I have never been to Gujarat with my parents. It's a big wish of mine. I just want to go back and have them show me our roots," said the first-time director, who also has a son named Arjun.

Los Angeles, Feb 17 (IANS) This year's Oscar statuettes will look a little bit different with a new manufacturer for the first time in 34 years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday.

The Academy announced that Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry, based in Rock Tavern, New York, will exclusively create its iconic Oscar statuettes, starting with the 88th Academy Awards, Xinhua reported.

Since 1982, the statuettes have been made by Chicago-based R.S. Owens & Co. According to the Academy, the switch will take the statuette back to its "roots", being hand-cast in bronze before receiving its 24-karat gold finish.

Academy officials said Polich Tallix used a cast-bronze Oscar from 1929 to create its wax mold with the help of a 3D printer, restoring some "subtle features of George Stanley's original sculpture, which was based on sketches by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons".

Each of the wax statuettes is coated in ceramic, then cured and fired at 1,600 Fahrenheit degrees, which melts away the wax and leaves the empty Oscar form that is cast in liquid bronze at more than 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.

The overall size and weight of the statuette remains the same as its predecessor -- 13.5 inches high and 8.5 pounds.

"With the help of some 21st century technology, we're able to honor the Oscar's proud beginnings," said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. "The new statuette exemplifies impeccable craftsmanship and the enduring nature of art."

"With this project, we've been entrusted with continuing a great tradition," said Dick Polich, Polich Tallix founder and CEO. "It's a privilege to be able to bring our art experience and technical expertise to the Oscar."

The Academy still plans to work with R.S. Owens to service existing statuettes and create other awards for the Academy, including plaques for its annual Scientific and Technical Awards.

The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood Los Angeles.

Los Angeles, Feb 16 (IANS) It was a clean sweep for rapper Kendrick Lamar at the 58th Grammy Awards here on Monday, when he bagged five trophies for his album "To Pimp a Butterfly". Singer Taylor Swift was honoured with the Album of the Year Grammy Award for "1989" at the gala, where Indian-origin filmmaker Asif Kapadia won the golden gramophone for his film "Amy" but internationally acclaimed sitarist Anoushka Shankar lost yet again.

Kapadia's "Amy", a documentary on the life of late singer Amy Winehouse, got the Best Music Film Award at Grammys. The filmmaker, born and brought up in London, was excited more so as the Grammy Award comes to him after his victory at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.

"Amazing! Thank you Grammys! 'Amy' wins Best Music Film," Kapadia tweeted.

Meanwhile, Shankar, who was nominated for the fifth time at the Grammys this year, failed to bag an award for her album "Home". She has never won a Grammy, but was happy as this time she became the first Indian musician to be a presenter at the event -- and she looked pretty in blue in a creation by Indian designer Manish Arora.

The star of the night, where separate tributes were paid to David Bowie, Eagles's Glenn Frey and Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister and Michael Jackson, was Lamar, who not just impressed with his five-Grammy win but also with his performance.

Interestingly, Lamar and Swift were in a face-off in multiple categories of the awards, but both emerged winners when the Best Music Video category honour was announced as the all-star video for Swift's "Bad Blood" remix features Lamar.

There were other Indian connects too.

South African musician Wouter Kellerman's latest album "Love language", for which Bengaluru-based Grammy winner Ricky Kej composed, produced and mixed "Aishwarya", lost the Grammy for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category to "Sylva" by Snarky Puppy & Metropole Orkest.

The Best Intrumental Composition award went to "The Afro Latin Jazz Suite", composed by Arturo O'Farrill and The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, featuring Indian artiste Rudresh Mahanthappa.

Singers Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars's "Uptown Funk" nabbed the Record of the Year as well as Best Pop Group/Duo Performance; singer Meghan Trainor was named Best New Artist; while "Baby" hitmaker Justin Bieber walked away with his first ever Grammy in the Best Dance Recording for "Where Are Ü Now", his collaborative work with Jack Ü (Skrillex and Diplo).

Skrillex And Diplo Present Jack Ü also took home the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album.

For the first time in three Grammys ceremonies, Ed Sheeran walked home with Song of the Year award and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Thinking Out Loud".

The event also saw Chris Stapleton winning the Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance for "Traveller", and lost out to Little Big Town's "Girl Crush" in the Best Country Song category.

The Weeknd, who had seven nominations, bagged Grammys for Best R&B Performance for "Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)" and Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Beauty Behind the Madness".

D'Angelo and the Vanguard's acclaimed “Black Messiah” earned Best R&B Album while "Really Love" claimed Best R&B Song at the event, which saw star performers like Lady Gaga, Adele and Bieber taking to the stage.

In the rock categories, Alabama Shakes band picked up three Grammys for Best Alternative Album (Sound and Color), Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for "Don't Wanna Fight". Muse's Drones bagged Best Rock Album, while mysterious metal outfit Ghost won Best Metal Performance for "Cirice".

Bob Dylan and the Band's comprehensive “The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11” nabbed the Best Historical Album while Maria Schneider won Best Arrangement, Instruments And Vocals for her work on the “Nothing Has Changed” version of David Bowie's "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" and Roger Waters's “Amused to Death” reissue earned Best Surround Sound Album.

Common and John Legend's Oscar-winning Selma song "Glory" won the Grammy for Best Song Written For Visual Media, with "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me" scooping up Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media.

Los Angeles, Feb 16 (IANS) Indian origin filmmaker Asif Kapadia on Monday bagged a Grammy Award for his film "Amy"; while internationally acclaimed sitarist Anoushka Shankar failed to take home the prestigious golden gramophone for her album "Home".

Kapadia beat artistes like Alex Gibney and Dave Grohl to bag the Best Music Film award for "Amy", a documentary on the life of late singer Amy Winehouse, who passed away at a young age of 27.

The British filmmaker who has Indian roots on Sunday even won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) honour for the movie.

Shankar, the daughter of world renowned sitar exponent, late Ravi Shankar, was nominated for the fifth time at this year's 58th Annual Grammy Awards.

Dressed in Indian designer Manish Arora's creation, Anoushka was the first ever Indian musician to be a presenter at the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony, though she lost out on an award this year to Angelique Kidjo, whose album "Sings" won Best World Music Album.

There were other Indian connects.

Best known for his films like “Chandni Bar”, “Page 3”, “Traffic Signal” and “Fashion”, Bhandarkar will be given the honour at the annual convocation ceremony of the educational institute on Saturday, read a statement.

Bhandarkar is known for showcasing real life issues through his films. He says that such appreciation gives him a push to do better.

Bhandarkar said: “I owe my success and recognition to the movies I have made and the whole team behind it. These recognitions are also a responsibility that pushes you to do better.”

In an official statement, a Rai University spokesperson said: "We want to honour the hard work and commitment of the director who hails from a middle class, non-filmy background and has carved a unique space for his genre of cinema through his sheer perseverance and focus."

Bhandarkar, whose last release "Calendar Girls" bombed at the box office, has been named for Padma Shri honour this year.

Los Angeles, Feb 9 (IANS) Amidst the racial diversity debate at the Oscars, actor Sylvester Stallone was considering his options to boycott the ceremony, but African-American director Ryan Coogler stopped him.

Stallone, who is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category at the February 28 ceremony, sought the "Creed" director's advice on the matter, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Due to the lack of diversity in this year's nominations, a few actors, actresses and filmmakers like Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee decided not to attend the ceremony.

Stallone had previously said he felt "incredibly humbled" by the nomination but he was not sure whether he should celebrate it.

"I spoke with Ryan Coogler when this happened. I said, 'Ryan how do you want to handle this? Because I really believe you are responsible for me being here,'" Stallone said on Monday at the Oscar nominees luncheon.

"I said, 'If you don't want me to go, I won't.' He said, 'I want you to go.' That's the kind of guy he is. He wanted me to stand up for the film," he added.

Coogler and Stallone's "Creed" co-star Michael B. Jordan did not receive any nomination while many thought they should have.

Stallone said it was only a "matter of time."

"Eventually, all talent will rise to the top. It's a matter of getting a new paradigm, a new way of thinking. But I owe everything to these two young men," he said.

A small group of protesters gathered outside the Monday luncheon and held the signs with #OscarsSoWhite hashtag.

New York, Feb 6 (IANS) Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman has been named the recipient of the 43rd annual Chaplin Award, the honour given out by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

The announcement was made on Friday, and the actor will be bestowed with the honour at the award gala set to take place on April 25 at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, reports variety.com.

Freeman's acting credits include "The Electric Company", "Lean On Me", "Street Smart", "Unforgiven", "Driving Miss Daisy", "The Shawshank Redemption", "Outbreak", "Batman Begins", "The Dark Knight", "The Dark Knight Rises", "Bruce Almighty" and "Million Dollar Baby" -- the 2004 film that earned him an Academy Award.

The Chaplin award honours actors and filmmakers who have reached the highest level of prominence and artistic achievement.

Freeman, who has been honoured at the Golden Globes multiple times, and also received the Cecil B. DeMille Award as well as the Kennedy Center Honor, is also executive producer of CBS series "Madam Secretary", and hosts and executive produces "Through the Wormhole With Morgan Freeman".

The Chaplin gala was launched in 1972, when it honoured the comedy genius Charlie Chaplin.

The award has gone to a roster of talent that includes Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford.

New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS) As the morning tide of the Arabian Sea rise in a Kutchi village in Gujarat, Ahmedbhai, one of the protagonists of the documentary "Shifting Tides", leads his herd of camels as they swim from one mangrove island to another.

The Kharai camels of Gujarat, which have adapted to the extreme climate of the Rann, are the world's only camel species able to swim.

The documentary "Shifting Tides" by Aakash Doshi which was selected for screening at the recently held Bangalore International Film Festival (BIFFES) and the Mumbai International Film Festival, 2016 (MIFF), beautifully captures the change that urbanisation and industrialisation around Kutch has brought about on the lives of the Unt Maldhari people who have been traditionally living off these mangrove-eating species of camels.

The revolving windmills and factories create the backdrop for the village where Ahmedbhai and Ismailbhai live with their families. The film follows Ahmedbhai and Ismailbhai who are a few of the remaining Unt Maldharis continuing their forefathers' business as the caretakers of the Kharai camels.

The bond that they share with the camels goes back almost seven generations.

"This film explores the duality between Unt Maldharis and the onslaught of change, which has affected their livelihood, and unique traditional knowledge that is on the verge of vanishing," Doshi, who made the film as part of his final year project while pursuing his postgraduate diploma in Bangalore-based Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology in 2014, told IANS over the phone.

For an ordinary observer, it may be difficult to distinguish the Kharai camels from other camel species. But Doshi informed that they have some distinguishing physical features.

"In comparison to the regular camels, the Kharai camels are smaller in height. The constitution of their legs is also different from other camels," Doshi said.

"Shifting Tides" has already won many accolades including the prestigious "Best Documentary" award at the National Students Film Awards held at the Film and Television Institute of India ( FTII), Pune, in 2015. The film also earned the best editing award at 2015 Cut.in, an annual national students' film festival held at the Tata Institute of Social Work (TISS), Mumbai.

"In earlier days, the Kharai camels were used for transportation, but now the Maldhari community earn their living by selling camel milk which is being marketed as healthy for people suffering from diabetes and several other ailments," Doshi said.

What is interesting to note, Doshi said, is that these animals have tied the Muslim (Jat) people who actually rear the camels with the Hindu (Rabari) community who own the camels with a bond of love and understanding for generations.

"There is actually no strict ownership system. They work on a trusteeship model," the young filmmaker who thanked Shristi Films, a centre of Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, for helping him follow his dreams.

Srishti Films, headed by noted environmental filmmaker Sanjay Barnela, offers its students a unique model of film-making.

"It follows a unique model of earning revenues through commissioned projects and then subsidising the student films, thus allowing them the liberty to work on issues in farflung areas such as Kutch, Malkangiri and Nagaland," Barnela explained.

Assisting Doshi with the camera while filming "Shifting Tides" was Naomi Shah, who herself went on to make another award-winning documentary "Alpajeevi" that drew comparisons between a grand but dilapidated bungalow in a bustling town, with that of a 'jhopdu' (a temporary shelter) in the harsh landscape of the Rann.

"Alpajeevi" won the silver trophy for best documentary at 2015 Cut.in and was also screened at 2016 Bangalore International Film Festival (BIFFES) and the Mumbai International Film Festival, 2016 (MIFF).

"The present batch of Srishti Film students is producing a set of films on "human-wildlife conflict" in remote Fakim wildlife sanctuary near the Indo-Burma border," Barnela pointed out.

Mumbai, Feb 4 (IANS) Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Bajirao Mastani" has landed five nominations, including in the Best Film category, at the 10th Asian Film Awards, where "The Assassin" is the front-runner with nine nominations.

"Bajirao Mastani" will compete with Chinese director Jia Zhangke's "Mountains May Depart", Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's "The Assassin", Japanese director Ryosuke Hashiguchi's "Three Stories of Love", Chinese film director Guan Hu's "Mr. Six" and South Korean director's Ryoo Seung-wan "Veteran" for the Best Film trophy.

Besides getting nominated for the Best Film category, "Bajirao Mastani" has also earned nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Music and Best Editing.

However, "Bajirao Mastani" isn't the only Indian film to be nominated at the AFA. "Masaan", "Talvar", "Bombay Velvet" and "Baahubali: The Beginning" also received nominations in different categories.

"Masaan" actor Vicky Kaushal is nominated for Best Newcomer, Vishal Bhardwaj for Best Screenplay ("Talvar"), Amit Trivedi for Best Original Music ("Bombay Velvet") and Srinivas Mohan ("Baahubali: The Beginning") for Best Visual Effects.

For this edition, 77 nominations have been made for 15 awards. The nominations represent 36 films from nine countries, read a statement on the Asian Film Awards' official website.

Organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy, the awards gala will be held on March 17 at the Venetian Theater in Macau.

Mumbai, Feb 3 (IANS) Manipuri documentary film "Phum Shang" won the coveted Golden Conch Award for the best documentary at the 14th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) which ended here on Wednesday.

Swiss film "My Name Is Salt" and an Indian film "Placebo" shared the Gold Conch Award for the best feature-length documentary film, an official said.

Directed by Hao Bam Pabankumar, "Phum Shang" critically examined the serious ecological problems encountered at Loktak Lake, the largest fresh-water lake in northeast India.

Characterised by its unique floating biomass called 'phumdi', Loktak Lake is considered a dying lake due to unchecked human activity.

Pabankumar, an alumnus of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata, won the Golden Conch Award and a cash prize of Rs.3 lakh.

Mumbai-born but Zurich-based Farida Pacha directed "My Name Is Salt", the saga of the journey of thousands of families in the Rann of Kutchh in Gujarat to extract the whitest salt in the world.

The film also won the best cinematographer award for Lutz Konermann.

Chandigarh-based filmmaker Abhay Kumar's "Placebo" explored the stress and pressures faced by medical students in the country.

The film also bagged the best editor and the most innovative film award in the competition section.

In the animation category of international competition, Debanjan Nandy's film "Chhaya" bagged the top prize.

Mumbai filmmaker Devashish Makhija's "Agli Baar" shared the best short fiction film honours with British entry by Ingo Putze "Solo Finale".

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Best Debut Film of a director went to Denmark-based filmmaker Nitesh Anjan for his film "Far From Home".

In the national competition category, Vadodara-based filmmaker Hardik Mehta's documentary "Famous In Amdavad" bagged the best documentary award.

Bengaluru-based filmmaker Chandrashekhar Reddy's "Fire Flies In The Abyss" bagged the best feature-length documentary award.

The best short fiction film award was shared by Mumbai's Payal Kapadia for her film "Last Mango Before The Monsoon" and Chennai's Satinder Singh Bedi for his film "Alice".

The IDPA Award for best student film went to Jharkhand filmmaker Niranjankumar Kujur for his presentation "Going Home".

The international jury for the MIFF included renowned filmmakers like Don Askarian (Germany), Jesper Andersen (Denmark), Mathiue Roy (Canada), Siddharth Kak and Gitanjali Rao (India).

The national jury comprised Mike Pandey, Uma DaCunha, Biju Dhanapalan, Audrium Stonys (Lithuania) and Jane Yu (Taiwan).

The week-long MIFF showcased over 385 films under the international and national competition categories, MIFF Prism, Indian Premiers, Jury Retrospectives, Animation and Award winning films, Children's documentary Films, North East Package, Films Division, Public Service Broadcasting Trust, films, homages, etc.
