Canberra, July 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Australia was hailed by the country's media as a good sign for the economy and diplomacy, given the progress made between the two countries in different facets of their bilateral relationship.

Australia’s largest nationally distributed circulation newspaper, ‘The Australian’, said that "Modi’s visit is a good sign for the economy and diplomacy".

It said that PM Modi’s visit coinciding with China’s missile firing at the South Pacific "underlines the vital importance of our deepening relationship with New Delhi. More than almost any other nation, India has, over decades, had to confront Chinese communist aggression and subversive strategic chicanery from across its borders, and Australia and our Pacific partners have much to learn from it".

Melbourne’s biggest-selling newspaper, ‘Herald Sun’, called PM Modi a Marvel superhero, noting the large turnout for the reception at Marvel Stadium.

"Modi Mania: Indian PM’s a Marvel Superhero. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night received a rapturous reception from a 35,000-strong crowd at Marvel Stadium. Earlier, PM Anthony Albanese feted his high-profile guest amid talks which included new defence and Uranium deals", its report said.

The Australian also lauded the deals made during the visit.

"Modi comes bearing gifts on trade, defence. India promise: Uranium deal worth billions, closer military ties, investment treaty," the Australian newspaper said.

The Australian Financial Review reported the growing interest in the Australian universities in India to set up campuses.

"Australian unis rush to set up shop in India. Another Australian university is primed to set up a campus in India after being given approval during a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking the total opening in the fast-growing country to eight," it reported.

Melbourne daily, The Age, said: "Albanese’s modus operandi. Australia and India accelerate free trade moves in Melbourne as PM’s Anthony Albanese and Narendra Modi strengthen their bond," regarding the much-discussed Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Thiruvananthapuram, July 4 (SocialNews.XYZ) Veteran journalist and former editor R. Rajagopal has expressed gratitude to Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan after a prolonged passport renewal ordeal was resolved. He described the intervention of the Chief Minister's Office as a source of reassurance during a particularly difficult phase of his life.

Rajagopal, a native of Kerala who is now based in Kolkata, had found himself caught in an administrative impasse after applying for the renewal of his passport.

The process was held up following an adverse police verification report from Kolkata, despite there being no criminal proceedings or legal disqualification against him.

The delay threatened to derail his plans to travel to the United States to attend his daughter's wedding, forcing the veteran journalist to seek help from the Kerala government.

Responding to his representation, Chief Minister Satheesan's office took up the matter with the authorities concerned.

The Chief Minister had also written to his West Bengal counterpart, urging that the issue be examined expeditiously so that the passport renewal application could be processed in accordance with law.

With the issue now resolved and the passport issued, Rajagopal has conveyed his appreciation to the Chief Minister in a letter, thanking him and the officials in his office for the support extended during the difficult period.

"The prompt attention given by your office reassured me that the matter would receive a fair hearing and that due process would prevail," Rajagopal wrote, adding that he remained deeply grateful for the concern shown by the Chief Minister and his team.

He said the experience had reinforced his faith in responsive public institutions and observed that, for any citizen confronted with an unexpected administrative hurdle, it was immensely reassuring to know that the Chief Minister's Office was willing to listen with empathy and act with sensitivity.

Rajagopal also expressed the hope that the same responsiveness would continue to be extended to every Keralite seeking assistance, saying such interventions strengthen public confidence in democratic governance and reaffirm that governments exist to serve the people.

New Delhi, July 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) Democracies flourish when media informs, asks meaningful questions, and encourages informed public debate while respecting facts, maintaining credibility and adhering to the highest professional standards, asserted Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan while addressing the 80th Foundation Day celebrations of the Organiser Weekly at the national capital's India Habitat Centre on Friday.

Freedom of the press is meaningful only when exercised with courage and responsibility, he said.

"Born in one of the most turbulent moments in our national history. Few publications can claim to have witnessed documented and participated in India's journey from the very dawn of India's Independence," he added.

The Vice-President described the publication's journey as one of "continuity, resilience and sustained commitment to public discourse across generations".

Referring to the legal challenge it faced against censorship in 1949, Vice-President Radhakrishnan said it marked the first such step in Independent India.

"The history of Organiser can not be separated from the history of free expression in Independent India. In 1949, it faced censorship for raising issues concerning Hindus in Pakistan and fought it out in the Supreme Court," he reminded.

"The legal battle became a landmark in the evolution of media freedom," Vice-President Radhakrishnan said.

He referred to the newspaper's engagement with issues relating to Jammu and Kashmir, the Praja Parishad movement, national security during the wars with China and Pakistan, Swadeshi, the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and several other significant developments in India's public life.

Paying tribute to the publication's role during the Emergency, the Vice-President noted that Organiser and its sister publication 'The Motherland' became rallying points for those committed to safeguarding constitutional democracy.

He said that such moments remind us that press freedom derives its true value when exercised with courage.

He stressed that the Organiser's eight decades of documentation constitute an important archival record of India's political, social and intellectual evolution and provide a valuable window into the evolution of Hindutva discourse in Independent India.

Congratulating Bharat Prakashan Limited, the editorial team and readers on this significant milestone, Vice-President Radhakrishnan said that true to its tagline, "Voice of the Nation", Organiser has consistently brought to the forefront issues that many preferred to overlook.

He also released 'Hindutva Discourse After Independence – Reading With Organiser Pages' written by Prafulla Ketkar and Gautam Choubey, and the book 'Temples Beyond Bharat' by Ujwala Chakradeo.

Referring to an earlier observation by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale at the event, the Vice-President noted that the Organiser has rather served as the "voice of the soul of the nation", guided not by any narrow or self-serving motive but by an abiding commitment to the larger national interest.

"There's only one thought that Mother Bharat one day should be the most powerful nation in the world," he iterated.

Among those present at the venue were Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale; Bharat Prakashan Limited Managing Director Arun Kumar Goyal; the Organiser editor Prafulla Ketkar; and RSS Delhi Prant Chief Anil Aggarwal.

Srinagar, July 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) Chief cleric and senior Kashmiri religious leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Friday called for responsible conduct from those in media or those using social media.

Mirwaiz addressed the Friday congregation at the historic Central Jama Masjid at Srinagar when he urged individuals, society and especially the media to uphold responsibility, restraint and moral accountability in public conduct.

Referring to the sayings of the Prophet -- "Beware, every one of you is a guardian/shepherd, and every one of you will be questioned about those under his care", the Kashmiri Chief cleric said that every individual carries a responsibility for which they will be answerable.

He added that this applies to parents, teachers, traders, leaders, public figures and also to the media, which plays a major role in shaping public opinion.

Mirwaiz said that media is an important pillar of society, and social media today has assumed great significance.

"When used with wisdom and responsibility, it (media) informs and strengthens society. However, when used only to gain followers, viewership or TRP, without considering its impact, it can cause serious harm."

Referring to a recent viral video in which a minor child was asked about heat and school holidays, and whose impolite response was aired and widely shared, Mirwaiz expressed concern over such content.

He said that society must ask whether minor children should be exposed to social media in this manner and used for public reactions without understanding the consequences.

Mirwaiz added that children are the future, and the questions asked of them and the content they are exposed to shape their thinking.

He said that children cannot be treated as tools for entertainment, publicity or social media engagement.

He stressed that responsible media and social media require sensitivity and accountability.

Those who hold cameras and microphones must remember that they carry a responsibility before the society and before Allah, he said.

Mirwaiz appealed to media persons, content creators and social media users to act with care, restraint and responsibility.

He said that in today's overwhelming social media environment, the kind of society we become will depend greatly on what we watch, like and share.

He urged people to share content with wisdom and discretion, and said public discourse, even in disagreement, should reflect maturity, respect and moral responsibility, so that children have a good example before them.

New Delhi, July 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) Acclaimed writer, lyricist and screenwriter Prasoon Joshi is set to be honoured with the inaugural 'NBT Bhushan Samman' at the Navbharat Times (NBT) Utsav 2026 on July 4. The special honour has been instituted by NBT Delhi to reward outstanding and enduring contributions in the fields of literature, culture, creativity, and mass communication.

The celebrated creative icon will receive the NBT Bhushan Samman by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during NBT Utsav 2026, slated for July 4 in the national capital.

Prasoon Joshi is among India's most distinguished creative minds, whose words have transcended cinema to become expressions of hope, emotion, patriotism, and social change. Through memorable works in films such as Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and Neerja, he has forged a lasting connection with audiences across generations. His writing reflects the aspirations of youth, the spirit of the nation, and the depth of human relationships, making his work an integral part of contemporary Indian cultural life.

Beyond cinema, Prasoon Joshi has established himself as a leading voice in literature and advertising. His poetry and prose are celebrated for their emotional depth, while his acclaimed advertising campaigns are known for their simplicity, creativity, and ability to connect with millions. His exceptional command over language and distinctive storytelling have earned him recognition as one of India's most influential creative personalities.

“Prasoon Joshi's remarkable creative journey continues to inspire generations of young Indians. It is with this vision that the publication is instituting the NBT Bhushan Samman, beginning with one of the country's most respected cultural icons,” NBT Delhi said in a press statement.

“The award will honour individuals whose extraordinary contributions have enriched Indian society, culture, and public life,” it further said about the purpose behind introducing a new honour at its annual flagship event.

Patna, June 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Patna High Court has issued an interim order restraining media organisations from conducting what it described as a media trial in the case involving Bihar contractor Rishu Shree in connection with the alleged tender scam being investigated by the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU).

The order was passed by Justice Anshul during the hearing of a matter related to the SVU investigation.

The court emphasised that every accused person has a Constitutional right to a fair trial and said that sensational reporting should not prejudice judicial proceedings.

The High Court directed print, electronic, digital, and social media platforms not to portray the petitioner as guilty while the case remains pending before the court.

The court said that every accused has a paramount Constitutional right to a fair trial.

This right cannot be allowed to be compromised by sensationalist reporting, it added.

The interim order applies to television channels, newspapers, online news portals, podcasts, video-streaming platforms, and social media platforms.

The court specifically cautioned media organisations against using expressions such as mastermind, kingpin, scamster, and any other terminology implying that guilt has already been established.

According to the court, such descriptions could prejudice the ongoing proceedings and undermine the accused's right to a fair trial.

The High Court clarified that balanced, factual, and impartial reporting of developments in the case may continue.

However, the court prohibited media trials based on alleged confessions, unverified investigative material, documents that have not been tested in court, and information that has not yet been judicially established.

The court said that irresponsible reporting could potentially influence the judicial process and interfere with the administration of justice.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on July 10.

The interim directions issued by the court will remain in force until further orders.

The case came into focus after the Special Vigilance Unit registered an FIR in connection with alleged irregularities involving contractor Rishu Shree.

Subsequently, the Bihar government suspended two IAS officers pending investigation.

On June 19, the SVU conducted searches at multiple premises linked to the suspended officers and a private contractor in Patna.

Investigative agencies are currently questioning Rishu Shree in connection with the case.

Earlier, the Patna Zonal Office of the Enforcement Directorate initiated proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The agency conducted searches at locations in Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Gujarat.

According to the Enforcement Directorate, cash amounting to Rs 11.64 crore and various documents were seized during the searches.

Investigators are examining financial records, documents, and digital evidence as part of the ongoing probe.

The allegations and findings of the investigative agencies are currently under investigation and have yet to be tested in court.

Mumbai, June 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) Amid escalating tensions over controversial remarks and threats directed at media persons by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Dina Patil, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and the party's chief leader Eknath Shinde took a firm stance on Thursday, asserting that any insult to journalists is absolutely unacceptable.

He reprimanded Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Dina Patil and explicitly advised him to tender an unconditional apology to the media community.

The development follows severe backlash over an incident where Sanjay Dina Patil allegedly used abusive language and issued threats to journalists on camera when questioned by reporters about shifting his allegiance to the Shiv Sena.

While being questioned by reporters regarding his recent political move and ongoing rivalry with the Uddhav Thackeray faction, Sanjay Dina Patil lost his temper. The interaction escalated rapidly, with Patil using explicit, foul language and issuing direct physical threats to reporters in front of police personnel.

Patil was caught on camera telling journalists, "If you come back to me again, I will have you beaten up."

He added, "Write whatever you want, record it, go and complain to the Commissioner. I am saying this right in front of the police."

Hours after protests from various associations of journalists and Opposition parties, Shinde, who was accompanied by transport minister Pratap Sarnaik, held a Press conference stating that disrespect to journalists won’t be accepted.

Expressing sharp indignation, Shinde also used the platform to vent his anger against certain political leaders who routinely use foul and aggressive language in public discourse.

He criticised the rising daily trend of politicians making provocative remarks before the media, pointing to recurrent threats like "break them," or "barge into their homes and assault them."

While Shinde refrained from naming any specific leader, his remarks were widely perceived as a veiled attack on Opposition leaders, particularly UBT faction spokesperson Sanjay Raut, who has been aggressively targeting the defecting MPs.

He noted that such language deeply erodes Maharashtra's political culture and serves as a direct insult to the dignity of democracy and the media.

Clarifying his interaction with the controversial MP, Shinde stated, “I reviewed the details of the statement made by Sanjay Dina Patil and held a discussion with him. He clarified that he had absolutely no intention of using derogatory words or hurting the sentiments of journalists, with whom he has always shared cordial relations."

Shinde claimed that Patil was reacting out of accumulated frustration regarding the toxic rhetoric directed at him.

According to the Deputy Chief Minister, Patil expressed deep anguish during their discussion, stating that he and his family had been subjected to constant, highly personal insults and character assassination by Opposition elements since 2022.

“The anger built up from witnessing such low-tier, everyday abuse before the cameras inadvertently spilled over. However, he has assured me that he harbours no ill will or hatred toward media professionals," he explained, adding that he cautioned Patil to avoid such public outbursts in the future.

Reaffirming his instructions to the MP, Shinde stated, "I told him clearly that if any inappropriate words escaped his mouth, he must sincerely express his regrets to the media." Shinde concluded by noting that Patil agreed to issue a heartfelt apology to journalists.

As journalists' associations across Maharashtra continue to register strong protests against the high-handed behaviour of the lawmaker, Shinde’s timely intervention seeks to douse the fire, urging all political actors to maintain restraint, civility, and respect for the fourth estate.

Mumbai, June 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) A major political and media controversy erupted on Thursday following an incident where Mumbai North-East MP, Sanjay Dina Patil, used highly abusive language and issued open threats to journalists on camera.

The incident occurred just days after his official switch from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

The outburst follows another recent controversial statement where he claimed his family historically "had five people killed" and threatened that anyone crossing his path would wind up "either in the hospital or the cemetery."

The incident has triggered widespread outrage within the journalistic community and intense political friction.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief leader Eknath Shinde attempted to de-escalate the situation, stating he had spoken to Patil.

He claimed that Patil's outburst wasn't directed at journalists themselves but was a reflection of deep-seated anger against political rivals (specifically pointing to Sanjay Raut's rhetoric against rebel MPs). He added that he advised Patil to express regret if his words hurt media sentiments.

Senior Shinde-faction leader Sanjay Shirsat offered an apology on behalf of the party, calling the incident an emotional outburst rather than an intentional threat.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) faction has sharply condemned the behaviour, with Sanjay Raut previously writing to the Police Commissioner demanding strict legal action against the MP for his serial use of violent and threatening language.

Raut explicitly cited two alarming statements purportedly made by Patil. He mentioned, “Patil reportedly stated, 'I have killed 5 people before'."

Raut urged the police to treat this as a self-confessed admission of guilt, demanding an immediate investigation into who these five individuals were and asking the authorities to register a murder case.

"In another incident, Patil allegedly warned, 'If anyone protests against me, I will throw a bomb at them. I will enter their homes and kill them',” claimed Raut.

Meanwhile, several associations of journalists have condemned Patil’s abusive language and demanding an apology and also action under the relevant norms.

New Delhi, June 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi High Court on Friday upheld the Centre's decision to temporarily suspend Telegram's services across India ahead of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination, ruling that the government had strictly followed the procedure prescribed under law while invoking emergency blocking powers and that the restrictions satisfied the test of proportionality.

Dismissing a petition filed by Telegram FZ LLC challenging the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's (MeitY) blocking order, a single-judge Bench of Justice Tejas Karia held that the temporary suspension of the messaging platform till June 22 and disabling of its message-editing feature till June 30 were justified in the circumstances surrounding the nationwide medical entrance examination.

"Given the emergency nature of the Impugned Order, the reasons supplied in arriving at the decision were sufficient. As Respondent No. 1 (Union government) has strictly followed the procedural steps as required under Section 69A of the IT Act, the challenge to the Impugned Order on the ground non-communication of reasons cannot be sustained," the Delhi High Court said.

On the issue of proportionality, Justice Karia said that the requirements laid down by the Supreme Court stood fulfilled.

"Applying the parameters laid down in Anuradha Bhasin (judgment), this Court is satisfied that the requirements of proportionality stand fulfilled, namely: (i) identification of a legitimate objective; (ii) existence of a rational nexus between the objective and the measure adopted; (iii) necessity of the measure in the facts and circumstances of the case; and (iv) adoption of the least restrictive measure available," the judge said.

The Delhi High Court added that the measures adopted by the government constituted "the least restrictive measure" available for achieving the stated objective and therefore could not be termed disproportionate.

Telegram had challenged the Centre's decision to temporarily suspend its services across India till June 22 and disable the message-editing feature till June 30. The restrictions were imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act following recommendations made by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Rejecting Telegram's contention that only specific channels or accounts could have been targeted, the Delhi High Court found that the platform's architecture enabled rapid dissemination of content and made enforcement through channel-specific takedowns ineffective.

"It is noteworthy that Telegram permits the large-scale addition of users to channels and groups. The platform architecture of Telegram is conducive to amplification and mass dissemination of content, enabling information to reach a substantial number of users within a short span of time," the judgment said.

It further observed that Telegram's Cloud-based structure, extensive bot ecosystem and ability to create mirror channels allowed unlawful actors to quickly reconstitute networks even after enforcement action.

"Despite corrective measures having been sought in relation to various misuses of the Telegram platform, fresh material... disclosed the continued occurrence of illicit activities by unlawful entities notwithstanding prior interventions. Therefore, it is evident that narrower measures, including the takedown of specific bots and channels, were ineffective having regard to the particular nature and architecture of the Telegram platform," the Delhi High Court said.

It also rejected Telegram's argument that Section 69A empowered the government only to block specific content and not an entire platform. Holding that the term "information" under the IT Act has a broad meaning, Justice Karia said an application or platform falls within its ambit as it comprises "codes", "computer programmes" and "software".

"Accordingly, this Court is of the view that Respondent No. 1 was empowered under Section 69A of the IT Act to issue directions for blocking public access to Telegram," the judgment said.

The Union government had defended the move by contending that Telegram's architecture and repeated misuse for examination-related frauds left authorities with no effective alternative but to invoke emergency blocking powers.

According to the Centre, NTA had identified several Telegram channels allegedly involved in selling purported NEET question papers and examination-related scams. The government had argued that content-specific takedowns were ineffective because channels and bots could be recreated within minutes, making temporary platform-wide restrictions necessary ahead of the June 21 re-examination.

The NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination is scheduled to be held on June 21 for over 22 lakh candidates following allegations of question paper leaks in the original examination conducted on May 3.

New Delhi, June 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Centre has defended its decision to temporarily suspend Telegram's services across India ahead of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination, telling the Delhi High Court that the messaging platform's architecture and repeated misuse for examination-related frauds left the Union government with "no other option" but to invoke emergency blocking powers under the Information Technology Act.

In a short affidavit filed before the Delhi High Court in response to Telegram's writ petition challenging the suspension, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said the decision was taken only after "exhausting alternatives" and resorting to less restrictive measures, including repeated requests for targeted takedowns of unlawful content.

“I state and submit that the impugned decision was taken after exhausting alternatives, which were less restrictive and included targeted takedown of unlawful content, but these would have been woefully inadequate," the affidavit filed by Mayank, Scientist-E with the Government of India, MeitY, stated.

The Centre argued that Telegram had become a key platform for the circulation of alleged NEET paper leaks, fake examination material, cyber frauds and other unlawful activities, posing a serious threat to public order and the integrity of the national examination system.

"This issue is both sensitive and extremely sentimental for the entire student community, and any further dilutions/compromise as regards the integrity of the examination process to be taken by as many as 22 lakh students pan India is potentially fraught with unrest and disruption with public order issues," the affidavit said.

According to the reply document, MeitY received a complaint from the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 21 detailing a coordinated fraud network operating on Telegram under banners such as "Re-NEET 2026", "Paper Leaked NEET" and similar names.

The NTA claimed that the identified channels, groups and bots had a combined reach of nearly 1.46 lakh accounts and were openly advertising purported access to examination papers in exchange for money.

The affidavit said a meeting was held with Telegram officials on June 3, during which the platform acknowledged difficulties in proactively identifying channels involved in selling leaked papers and admitted that bad actors were misusing its "anonymity" features.

The government maintained that Telegram failed to take adequate proactive measures despite repeated concerns raised over several years.

"It was further conveyed that the issue concerning dissemination of illegal content is now out of proportion and that the Government can take a strict measure against the platform, since Telegram has consistently failed to proactively take measures to control the misuse of the platform," the affidavit quoted from the minutes of the June 3 meeting.

Defending the use of emergency powers under Rule 9 of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009, the Centre said authorities had no viable alternative given the rapid proliferation of mirror channels, anonymous accounts and automated bots.

The affidavit referred to an example of a Telegram channel titled "NEET Mafia" with around 18,617 subscribers, alleging that it was being used to disseminate content relating to examination paper leaks, payment arrangements and advance booking schemes.

"Each subscriber may constitute a potential recipient, participant, facilitator, beneficiary or witness in relation to the unlawful activity being investigated," the Centre argued.

The Union government further relied on reports prepared by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), claiming that Telegram's technical features — including anonymity-enhancing tools, large-scale channels, automated bots, forwarding mechanisms and Cloud-based architecture — created significant challenges for law enforcement agencies.

"Telegram's combination of large subscriber capacity, anonymity features, Cloud-based architecture and ease of recreation of channels creates a persistent enforcement challenge," the affidavit said.

The Centre also contended that content-specific takedowns were ineffective because channels and bots could be recreated within minutes.

"Consequently, unlawful activity, and interim blocking under Section 69A is the only effective measure to break the cycle of instant respawning that Telegram itself documents," it stated.

Referring to the upcoming NEET re-examination, the Union government said its "prime consideration" was to ensure the sanctity and purity of the test and prevent any further controversy.

"The government is committed to hold Re-NEET examination in all its sanctity and purity," the affidavit said, adding that any delay in blocking access could have led to "mass student unrest, disruption of public order and incitement to commissioning of cognizable offence".

The Centre also argued that Telegram's commercial interests were outweighed by the interests of over 22 lakh candidates scheduled to appear in the examination.

"The perpetuated individualistic commercial prejudice/grievance of the petitioner is far outweighed by the interest of 22 lakh examinees, as also maintenance of public order and faith in the examination system," it said.

Telegram platform has challenged the Centre's decision to temporarily suspend its services across India till June 22 and disable its message-editing feature till June 30, contending that the restrictions are disproportionate and adversely affect millions of users.

The Union government imposed the temporary curbs ahead of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination slated for June 21, citing concerns over alleged paper leaks, misinformation campaigns and cheating networks.

The NTA has maintained that channel-specific takedowns and enforcement actions were insufficient to tackle the scale of the problem. The re-examination is being conducted following allegations of question paper leaks during the original NEET (UG) 2026 examination held on May 3.

New Delhi, June 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit on Wednesday dismissed as fake a letter circulating on social media that falsely claimed to have been issued by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh regarding preparations for “Operation Sindoor 2.0”.

In a post on X, PIB Fact Check cautioned the public against falling for misinformation and clarified that neither the Defence Secretary nor the Ministry of Defence had issued any such communication.

“Do not fall for fake news!” PIB Fact Check said in its post.

The fact-checking unit stated that a letter allegedly issued by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was being widely circulated online, claiming to outline preparations for “Operation Sindoor 2.0”.

“This letter is Fake. Neither the Defence Secretary nor the Defence Ministry has issued any such letter,” the post said.

PIB Fact Check also shared an image of the purported document, which carried the title, “Subject: Operation Sindoor 2.0; Prime Minister’s Directive, Strategic Intent.” The agency clarified that the document was fabricated and had no connection with the Ministry of Defence or any official government communication.

Urging citizens to remain vigilant, the fact-checking unit advised people to verify information through official channels before sharing it on social media.

“Beware of fake news circulating online and always depend on reliable official sources for verified information,” PIB Fact Check said, adding, “Report suspicious content related to the Government of India to @PIBFactCheck.”

The clarification comes amid continued efforts by government agencies to counter misinformation and prevent the spread of unverified claims on digital platforms.

Earlier, PIB Fact Check had debunked another set of viral social media claims alleging that Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal were visiting London along with judges and participating in a badminton event there.

Addressing the claims on X, the fact-checking unit categorically stated that the reports were false and that neither Rijiju nor Meghwal was in London.

“This claim is fake. Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal are not visiting London,” PIB Fact Check said.

The agency further clarified that photographs accompanying the viral posts were being misrepresented. According to PIB Fact Check, the images were not taken in London but during the All India Judges’ Badminton Championship held at Thyagaraj Stadium in New Delhi in November 2025.

Reiterating its appeal to citizens, PIB Fact Check urged people not to share misleading or unverified content and encouraged them to report suspicious photos, videos, or messages related to the Government of India for verification through official channels.

Thiruvananthapuram, June 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) The controversy surrounding the death of journalist K.M. Basheer resurfaced in the Kerala Legislative Assembly media room on Wednesday, with journalists staging a strong protest against the presence of Agriculture Department Director Sriram Venkitaraman at an official press conference.

Sriram Venkitaraman had arrived at the Assembly media room along with Agriculture Minister T. Siddique, who had convened the Press conference.

However, journalists present in the hall objected to the participation of Sriram, the first accused in the case relating to the death of journalist K.M. Basheer, and made it clear that they would not allow the briefing to continue with him seated alongside the minister.

The protest intensified inside the media room, with journalists raising objections and demanding that the minister should not share the dais with a person accused in a case involving the deceased journalist.

They also declared that they would boycott the press conference if Sriram remained present.

Facing mounting pressure and the firm stand taken by the media fraternity, Sriram was forced to leave the hall.

The minister’s press conference could resume only after his exit.

The death of Basheer, a journalist with Siraj daily, had triggered widespread outrage in Kerala.

On August 3, 2019, Basheer was killed in a road accident near the Museum junction in Thiruvananthapuram while he was returning home after work.

The car in which Sriram Venkitaraman was travelling allegedly rammed into Basheer’s motorcycle from behind.

Basheer was thrown off the bike in the impact and died before he could be taken to hospital.

The incident had led to serious criticism against the police over allegations that there were attempts to shield the accused.

The delay in collecting Sriram’s blood sample, despite allegations that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, had triggered a major controversy.

The latest protest in the Assembly media room reflects that the anger over the case continues years after Basheer’s death, with journalists objecting to Sriram’s presence at official platforms.

New Delhi, May 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi High Court on Friday upheld the validity of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) regulations capping television advertisements at 12 minutes per clock hour.

A division bench of Justices Anil Kshetarpal and Amit Mahajan dismissed a batch of petitions filed by general entertainment, news, and regional broadcasters challenging Rule 7(11) of the Cable Television Network Rules, 1994, and Regulation 3 of the Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) Regulations, 2012.

The broadcasters had contended that the cap of 10 minutes for commercial advertisements and two minutes for self-promotional content per hour violated their rights under Articles 14 and 19 of the Constitution.

In its order, the Delhi High Court held that the TRAI had acted within its statutory powers in prescribing the limit, and observed that the regulation was aimed at protecting viewers from excessive commercial interruptions while maintaining the quality of service.

"TRAI’s statutory power to regulate the prescribed time for advertisements can be deduced from Section 11(1)(b)(v) of the Act of 1997," the Justice Kshetarpal-led Bench said, adding that the TRAI’s mandate includes enhancing the quality of viewers’ experience and balancing the interests of broadcasters and consumers.

Observing that television viewers cannot skip or fast-forward advertisements in the same manner as users of digital platforms, the Delhi High Court said excessive or uneven advertising directly impairs consumers’ right to a fair viewing experience.

"The measure taken by TRAI to limit the advertisements to 12 minutes per clock hour, is in pursuance of the recognised QoS objective of TRAI, aimed at reducing excessive commercial breaks and preventing the artificial clustering of advertisements," the judgment said.

The bench rejected the argument that the restriction infringed broadcasters’ freedom of speech and expression, holding that the grievance essentially related to loss of advertising revenue and therefore fell within the ambit of the freedom to carry on business under Article 19(1)(g), which is subject to reasonable restrictions in the public interest.

"Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution does not guarantee profitability, and certainly not a right to monetise public property beyond reasonable structural limits imposed in the common good," it observed.

The judgment added that airwaves and spectrum are scarce public resources held by the government in trust for the people and cannot be subjected to unfettered commercial exploitation.

"The broadcasters cannot claim an unfettered right to exploit spectrum for commercial purposes. Their use of such resources is subject to licensing conditions, statutory frameworks, and regulatory oversight," the Delhi High Court said.

Referring to Supreme Court precedents treating spectrum as a finite public resource, the judgment held that regulation of advertisement time was linked to the constitutional mandate under Articles 39(b) and 39(c) to ensure that material resources of the community are utilised for the common good.

According to the Delhi High Court, the framework represents a "constitutionally sound exercise" of regulatory authority and advances consumer interest while ensuring equitable utilisation of broadcast spectrum. Highlighting the consumer-centric objective of the regulation, it added that the impugned regulations were introduced following widespread complaints about excessive and disruptive advertisements affecting viewing experience.

Concluding that the 12-minute ceiling is a neutral, time-based restriction that regulates the quantity of advertisements rather than their content, the bench held that the framework neither violates Articles 14 and 19 nor suffers from arbitrariness.

"Rule 7(11) of the Rules of 1994 and Regulation 3 of the Regulation of 2012, as amended in 2013, constitute a constitutionally valid exercise of regulatory power, striking a proportionate balance between broadcaster rights and the public interest in efficient and fair use of broadcast spectrum," the Delhi High Court said while dismissing all 17 petitions.

Islamabad, May 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) Journalists in Pakistan have urged the Parliament to review all media laws and termed the recent amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016 "draconian black law, specifically engineered to facilitate the arm-twisting of journalists and the suppression of Pakistan’s media landscape", reports said.

A declaration issued at the conclusion of the National Journalists Convention on “Media Laws, Regulations, and Ethics", organised by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ), read: "We demand that the Parliament review all media laws that are contrary to Article 19 of the Constitution," the daily Dawn reported.

Through the declaration, known as the "Islamabad Declaration", the journalists slammed the "violation of the government’s solemn promise that these laws would never be weaponised against the press".

During the event, the journalists voiced concern over continued retrenchments and the deliberate job insecurity created by media owners, especially in the electronic media, where layoffs were made without any justification, resulting in hundreds of media personnel becoming jobless amid record-high inflation, as per the Dawn report.

The journalists condemned the denial of basic employment rights to media personnel, including health insurance, gratuity, and EOBI registration and benefits.

The declaration stated, “The Convention expresses serious concern over the government’s policy of using public advertisements as a tool of financial pressure to dictate editorial content and enforce censorship through informal press advice. Daily Dawn, in particular, is a victim of this policy; it is being denied not only public-sector advertisements but is also facing a situation in which the private corporate sector is being persuaded to withhold advertising."

In April, Islamabad-based media watchdog Freedom Network said that Pakistan's media landscape saw a reduction in space for free expression during the past year due to increasing legal, regulatory, and economic and other pressures.

Titled 'Regulatory Repression of Freedom of Expression – Legal Controls and PECA Undermine Media and Journalism in Pakistan', the report stated that the amended Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) law is the most “consequential instrument” being used to restrict journalists and free speech practitioners in the country.

According to the report, the provisions of PECA law were increasingly being used in 2025 and 2026 to criminalise lawful expression, target dissent, and intimidate journalists, lawyers and political commentators.

Freedom Network released the report to mark World Press Freedom Day, which is observed globally on May 3 each year.

"The weaponisation of PECA has created a climate of fear where journalists are compelled to self-censor to avoid legal repercussions," said Freedom Network Executive Director Iqbal Khattak, while terming it as "one of the most serious threats to media freedom in Pakistan today."

The report has highlighted convictions of human rights lawyers, including Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha, as examples of how custodial sentences were being used to deter dissent. Furthermore, dozens of journalists have faced charges under increased provisions of PECA, while defamation cases, regulatory suspensions and internet shutdowns have further affected independent journalism.

The report mentioned that state-led efforts to counter disinformation and hate speech were often used along with increased surveillance and selective enforcement.

"In terms of journalist safety, the report documented at least 129 verified incidents of violations during the review period, which ranged between April 2025 and March 2026. Legal threats and physical violence accounted for nearly two-thirds of these cases. Among these violations are two murders, five cases of threats to murder, 58 legal cases (mostly PECA-invoked), 16 cases of assault, 11 cases of threats to harm and two cases of kidnapping and enforced disappearance," Freedom Network stated.

"Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emerged as the most dangerous regions for journalists, while murders in Sindh and Balochistan underscored the persistent risks. State authorities were suspected as the leading perpetrators, responsible for over 60 per cent of violations, primarily through legal and custodial actions. Non-state actors, including militant groups and criminal networks, also contributed to threats, assaults, and killings," it added.

The notification orders complete prohibition on the participation or association of any member of the services in any sponsored or privately produced media programme or any media event sponsored by the Government of India but produced by an outside agency, except with prior sanction

It had also imposed a complete prohibition without any government order on any direct or indirect communication of any document or information with the media by members of the services.

New Delhi, May 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been referred to as the world's most popular politician and the Prime Ministers of Nordic countries have a lot to learn from him, according to an article in Norway's leading financial newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (DN).

On May 18, Prime Minister Modi will visit Norway.

India's Prime Minister Modi will be received by King Harald, promote Indian business, meet with the Indian diaspora and attend an India-Nordic Prime Ministers' meeting.

"The Nordic Prime Ministers should listen carefully. They have a lot to learn from their Indian counterpart," the Norwegian newspaper noted.

The article, written days ahead of PM Modi's visit to Norway on May 18, said that "whilst Nordic Prime Ministers barely enjoy a domestic approval rating of 30 per cent, PM Modi stands at around 70 per cent in the polls. No leader in any major country is nearly as popular at home as PM Modi".

"PM Modi has been in power in India for more than twelve years. Should he choose to stand again, all the signs suggest he will be re-elected. A distant dream for European leaders. His (PM Modi's) success can be attributed to rapid economic development, a winning ideology, the world's strongest political party and his own life story," the article said.

It also mentions PM Modi's humble beginnings as "almost unique" in a world where nearly all Heads of state come from the upper middle class.

"He (PM Modi) has no one to thank for his career but himself -- and the Hindu nationalist movement. He is an Indian Einar Gerhardsen -- self-taught, an organiser. (Einar was Norway's former Prime Minister)," the article remarked.

It further points out that "PM Modi is himself a strong driving force behind the Indian economy which is currently growing at seven per cent, faster than China's and far outpacing any other major economy. But at current growth rates, India's economy will quadruple by 2050. India will then be the world's second-largest economy, rivalling the US".

"It also highlights PM Modi's achievement in accelerating green growth. India is now the world's third-largest producer of solar and wind energy; no one should be surprised if they overtake the US and take second place. Last year, coal emissions in India fell for the first time," the article said.

"Western leaders can learn a great deal from PM Modi's consistent green message. Prime Minister Modi almost never talks about global climate negotiations or emissions. He asks no one to make sacrifices for the environment. The message is that India can lift 1.5 billion people out of poverty through green growth. There is no longer a choice between the economy and the environment," the report added.

It also opines that even if secular parties were to win the next election, India's ideology will remain Hindu nationalism.

"Hindu nationalism is India's answer to the question that all non-Western countries have faced since the Industrial Revolution. How to modernise without becoming like the West? Japan was the first to untangle that knot -- becoming ultra-modern, yet remaining deeply Japanese. Korea is now richer than Japan and a major exporter of Korean culture and music. China anchors its modernity in its own roots -- in Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism," the article said.

The article also highlights that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is currently the world's largest political party, with more than 100 million members. The party has achieved something unprecedented in India by getting the support across all castes as well as the rich and poor.

"Among Western analysts, it has become something of a pastime to find fault with the BJP. The critics are right in saying that the BJP stands for the unification of Hindus. But there is little evidence to suggest that there have been more conflicts between Muslims and Hindus under the BJP. There was more violence and more pogroms when the Congress Party was in power. Millions of Muslims are crossing into India from neighbouring countries; hardly any Muslims are fleeing the other way," the article said.

It also underscores that India is the only country to have chosen a democratic model which is due to the fact that democracy is deeply rooted in Indian culture and tradition. This has nothing to do with the British as other former colonies of the Raj such as Pakistan, Myanmar and the Gulf monarchies are not democracies.

"In a world where Norway needs new allies for a rules-based international order and Norwegian business needs new horizons, we have much to gain from closer ties with India. But this requires us to be willing to listen, not just to lecture. Then countless win-win opportunities could open up," the article concludes.

Dhaka, May 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Political cartoons in Bangladesh, once regarded as a sharp and fearless medium of public dissent and satire, are steadily disappearing from mainstream media amid growing corporate influence, self-censorship, and the monetisation of news content, according to a report.

The concerns were highlighted in an interview published by Bangladesh-based English daily, The Daily Star, authored by Khairul Hassan Jahin, in which leading Bangladeshi cartoonist Mehedi Haque reflected on the shrinking space for political satire in the country.

Haque, who serves as Executive Editor of the satirical magazine ''Unmad'', Senior Cartoonist at New Age, and Editor and Publisher of Dhaka Comics, said the decline began during a prolonged period of political dominance by a single party, when major corporate groups increasingly entered the media sector and prioritised maintaining favourable ties with the government.

According to him, informal editorial restrictions gradually emerged, particularly around criticism or satire directed at ruling political figures.

He also pointed to the amplifying role of social media, saying online backlash often intensified the perceived risks associated with political cartooning.

"Artists were presented with financially rewarding opportunities, including projects aligned with the ruling establishment. Many preferred those 'safe' options over the uncertainty of political satire," Haque said in the interview.

He added that the decline of political cartoons is driven less by direct censorship and more by self-censorship among artists who fear backlash and professional consequences.

Haque also warned that humour itself is vanishing from public discourse, replaced increasingly by outrage-driven content that is easier to monetise online.

The cartoonist noted that political satire historically functioned as a barometer of press freedom and public dissent in Bangladesh.

"What is being lost is humour itself," he said, adding that satire traditionally allowed societies to critique power structures while reducing anger and division through wit.

The Daily Star report also highlighted Haque's criticism of corporate ownership in the media industry, which he said has contributed to greater editorial caution around sensitive political issues.

Despite receiving legal notices over his work, Haque said that factual reporting and responsible satire allowed him to defend his cartoons confidently.

Bangladesh has a long tradition of political cartoons, with satirical illustrations historically appearing prominently in newspapers and magazines as commentary on corruption, governance, and social issues.

Earlier reports also documented how political cartoons once played a major role in protest movements and democratic discourse in the country.

Observers say the conversation around the decline of political cartoons also reflects broader concerns over media freedom and the pressures faced by journalists and artists in Bangladesh's evolving political environment.

Recent international reports have additionally flagged growing challenges for the country's media institutions and concerns over press freedom.

Quetta, May 4 (SocialNews.XYZ) Journalists in Pakistan's Quetta have expressed their commitment to defending media independence, pledging to continue their struggle for freedom of expression and rejecting "black laws" restricting rights of press, local media reported on Monday.

A large number of journalists carrying banners and placards highlighting their demands gathered outside the Quetta Press Club. Journalists shouted slogans against restrictive legislation, especially the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), and other measures that erode press freedom. Civil society activists also participated in the event, expressing their solidarity with journalists, the daily Dawn reported.

Addressing the gathering, Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) President Manzoor Ahmed Rind, Quetta Press Club President Irfan Saeed, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Assistant Secretary Noor Elahi Bugti, BUJ General Secretary Shah Hussain Tareen, and civil society activist Bahram Lehri spoke about the challenges faced by journalists in Balochistan.

The speakers stated that journalists, despite receiving threats from both state and non-state actors, have continued to fulfil their professional responsibilities without compromising on truth. They paid tribute to over 50 journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty, stressing that their sacrifices demonstrated the high stakes of independent journalism in the region.

They mentioned that the prevailing security situation and restrictive legislation, like the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), have created an increasingly difficult environment for journalists.

The speakers slammed PECA and stated that such legislation is often used for curbing dissent and silencing factual reporting. They stated that restrictions on media have increased under democratic governments, surpassing those seen during past authoritarian regimes, Dawn reported.

The protesters called for withdrawal or review of PECA in consultation with stakeholders, including the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists and other media organisations. They demanded an end to restrictions on press freedom and urged authorities to ensure a safe and enabling environment for journalists.

The participants called for the immediate restoration of bureau offices of television channels and newspapers that have been shut in Quetta. They demanded reinstatement of journalists and media workers who had lost their jobs, guarantees for job security and timely payment of their salaries.

Islamabad, May 4 (SocialNews.XYZ) Media bodies and civil society organisations have voiced concern over increasing curbs on press freedom and growing risks to journalists in Pakistan, local media reported on Monday.

In a joint statement released to mark the World Press Freedom Day, the Joint Action Committee — comprising the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AMEND), and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) termed the past year challenging for journalism, with growing restrictions around the world, the daily Dawn reported.

It stated that the state of freedom of expression has not been satisfactory in Pakistan. According to the statement, journalists in Pakistan face harassment, arrests, violence and increasing pressure from state institutions, while media outlets face editorial interference, demonstrating how outlets are being controlled at various levels and tactics being used, like government advertisements to get editorial control, limiting the right to information through censorship, and taking dissenting voices off air.

Meanwhile, civil society representatives issued an open letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where they mentioned that the media landscape in Pakistan was increasingly marked by intimidation, legal pressure, and economic vulnerability.

The signatories stated that World Press Freedom Day, meant to celebrate the role of a free press, was a reminder of the risks faced by journalists. They mentioned that a functioning democracy relied on strong institutions, especially on independent media committed to factual reporting and accountability, Dawn reported.

In the letter, the signatories spoke about the increasing pattern of harassment under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), which they said was often used to silence dissent instead of securing convictions. In the letter, the signatories mentioned several cases in which journalists were booked under the law but later released due to a lack of evidence.

The cases included Islamabad-based journalist Asad Toor, who faced multiple legal actions over social media posts, and Farhan Mallick, founder of a digital news platform, who was arrested in 2025 on allegations of anti-state activity before being acquitted earlier this year. The letter stated that the acquittals demonstrated concerns that such prosecutions were often "fishing expeditions" for intimidation.

Last week, a report in Islamabad-based media watchdog Freedom Network detailed that Pakistan's media landscape saw a reduction in space for free expression during the past year due to increasing legal, regulatory, and economic and other pressures.

Titled 'Regulatory Repression of Freedom of Expression – Legal Controls and PECA Undermine Media and Journalism in Pakistan', the report stated that the amended PECA law is the most "consequential instrument" being used to restrict journalists and free speech practitioners in the country.

"The weaponisation of PECA has created a climate of fear where journalists are compelled to self-censor to avoid legal repercussions," said Freedom Network Executive Director Iqbal Khattak, while terming it as "one of the most serious threats to media freedom in Pakistan today".

Kabul, May 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan Richard Bennett has demanded immediate and unconditional release of detained journalists in Afghanistan, local media reported on Sunday.

In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day on Sunday, Bennett called on Taliban to ensure that journalists can do their work freely without fear of arrest, threats or harassment.

He stressed that press freedom has worsened significantly since Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, with independent reporting increasingly restricted under a hostile environment, Afghanistan's leading news agency Khaama Press reported.

"At least 4 journalists and media workers continue to be detained in Afghanistan. I call for their release and the release of all other people arbitrarily detained in Afghanistan. No time is better than today for this, as 3 June is World Press Freedom Day," Bennett posted on X.

He stated that journalists now function under constant pressure and ordinary reporting can lead to reprisals, especially on issues related to women’s rights and governance.

Bennett stated that people speaking to the media face intimidation, surveillance, and detention, further affecting the flow of reliable information.

Bennett further stated that female journalists in Afghanistan face compounded barriers, mobility restrictions, dress codes, and shrinking opportunities, resulting in many leaving their profession, Khaama Press reported.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan has been ranked 175th out of 180 nations in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, according to data from Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Afghanistan's overall score increased from 17.88 in 2025 to 19.51 in 2026, indicating better press freedom. Despite the slight improvement, Afghanistan has been ranked among the worst-performing nations, Afghanistan-based Amu TV reported.

RSF evaluates press freedom on the basis of five indicators - political, economic, legislative, social and security -- each analysing a different dimension of the media landscape. The political indicator, which analyses government influence over the media and editorial independence, ranked Afghanistan 158th in 2026, in comparison to 163rd in 2025.

The economic indicator, which assesses the financial condition for journalism including funding, advertising and sustainability of media houses, remained unchanged at 165th in both years.

The legislative indicator, which analyses laws and regulations impacting press freedom, ranked Afghanistan at 178th position in 2025 and 2026.

The social indicator, which evaluates societal pressures, discrimination and the ability of journalists to function freely within the cultural norms, ranked Afghanistan at 175th rank in 2025 and 2026.

The security indicator, which evaluates risks like violence, detention and threats against journalists ranked Afghanistan at 177th spot in 2026 in comparison to 175th in 2025.

RSF noted that the figures showcase that media environment has reshaped after Taliban seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021.

It said, "The takeover sounded the death knell for press freedom," adding that media organisations now need to broadcast government-controlled information in an environment “devoid of pluralism and dissenting voices.”

According to the agency, 43 per cent of media houses closed within three months of Taliban's return to power. Over two-thirds of Afghanistan's roughly 12,000 journalists have left the field, Amu TV reported.

Women journalists have also been impacted, with eight out of 10 not working anymore. According to the RSF, the political and legal environment has increased control over the media in Afghanistan, with journalists receiving orders from several state bodies, including ministries, the intelligence service and institutions monitoring public conduct.

Beijing, May 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) China remained the world's largest prison for journalists and its regime conducted a campaign of repression against journalism and the right to information across the world, Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said in its latest annual survey. Currently, China has 110 journalists and three media workers in detention, as per the report.

The Chinese regime has been using surveillance, coercion, intimidation and harassment to stop independent journalists from reporting on issues it considers “sensitive”, Tibetan Review reported, citing the RSF report.

China has been ranked 178th out of 180 nations in the world press freedom index. China is placed at the third spot from the bottom and is ahead of North Korea (179th) and Eritrea (180th), however, it has dropped two spots lower than its last year’s ranking at 176th, according to a report in Tibetan Review.

China has been ranked 179th in the political indicator and legal indicator, 177th in the social indicator and 173rd in the economic indicator (21.66), showcasing systemic constraints on journalism across governance, legal frameworks, societal conditions, and media sustainability.

Earlier in March, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) strongly condemned the Chinese authorities for denying journalist Zhang Zhan access to legal counsel and isolating her from the outside world, urging the global community to intensify pressure on Beijing to end her persecution.

Citing information, RSF revealed that following her second conviction in September 2025 on “trumped-up charges", Zhan was denied access to a lawyer, obstructing her ability to appeal an “unjust verdict” with the support of independent legal counsel.

“We are outraged by the extent to which the Chinese authorities are seeking to intimidate and silence Zhang Zhan, an icon of press freedom in China. As if her arbitrary sentencing were not enough, they are now denying her the right to the legal counsel of her choosing, further undermining her ability to appeal. Zhang Zhan should be recognized as a courageous journalist who alerted the world to a deadly public health crisis, not imprisoned while her life remains at risk," said Aleksandra Bielakowska, Advocacy Manager, RSF Asia-Pacific.

“We call on the international community to intensify pressure on Beijing to end its persecution of Zhang Zhan, ensure her safety and access to adequate medical care, and secure her immediate release,” she added.

According to the RSF, Zhan was sentenced on September 19, 2025, to four years in prison on the fabricated charge of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” following a closed-door trial.

“At least diplomats from at least seven countries and five activists who attempted to observe the proceedings were barred from entering and, in some cases, briefly detained. Lawyers' requests to meet with her have been systematically rejected since her second sentencing, and her legal representatives have faced ongoing harassment by the authorities,” the organisation stated.

The RSF highlighted that Zhan was detained on August 28, 2024, and is being held at Shanghai’s Pudong Detention Center, marking her second prison term.

Islamabad, May 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) Media in Pakistan has been facing legal pressure, physical violence, digital harassment and financial coercion, according to the gist of a recent report released by the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) ahead of World Press Freedom Day 2026. The report documented at least 233 incidents of journalists being targeted between January 2025 and April 2026, which included 67 assaults, 67 criminal complaints, 11 arrests, 11 detentions and three kidnappings, local media reported.

"The Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) looms large over the report. Amended at the start of 2025 and, in PPF’s words, “bulldozed through parliament” without stakeholder consultation, it has become the instrument of choice against journalists. Of the 67 criminal complaints documented, 34 invoked Peca. Notices and summons from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) have become, the report says, 'a repeat occurrence.' The pattern is grimly predictable: a journalist publishes something inconvenient, and a complaint follows," a report in Pakistan's daily Dawn mentioned.

Human rights lawyers Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha, who had represented journalists in Peca cases, were given a 17-year prison sentence under the same legislation. The report stated that legal pressure has not replaced physical danger, but it has been added on top of it.

The report stated that journalists covering the Aurat March in Islamabad were arrested by police and held for nearly eight hours on March 8. The PPF highlighted a disregard for existing media safety laws, even when arrests were made, journalists were asked to submit their electronic devices in violation of privacy protections those laws guarantee.

The report stated that women journalists were being targetted in Pakistan through AI-generated content. PPF documented several instances in 2025-26, where fabricated material showcasing female journalists was circulated online. In November last year, journalist Benazir Shah said that an AI-generated video of her was shared shared by an account followed by the federal information minister. PPF stressed that such attacks are not made to challenge work of women journalists but to destroy her reputation through deeply personal and gendered means, Dawn reported.

The report stated that the government's withholding of official advertisements from Dawn was as an attempt to have economic impact on Pakistan's daily newspaper. Urdu daily Sahafat also allegedly faced similar treatment. Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) also issued show-cause notices to media outlets that reinforce or extend existing red lines.

A report in Dawn stated, "The report situates these failures within a broader pattern of impunity. The establishment in November 2025 of the federal Commission for the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals was a welcome step, the report says, but cautions that it must now be made genuinely functional — with adequate resources and real independence."

Chandigarh, April 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) Chandigarh police said on Wednesday that a notice has been issued for the second time to Delhi-based author and activist Madhu Kishwar after an FIR was registered against her for alleged circulation of forged and misleading content on social media.

Speaking to IANS, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur said, "A Chandigarh-based complainant reported that a post and video had been shared on social media, misrepresenting facts and making false statements about a constitutional authority. It was also found that the video actually belonged to someone else."

She added that an FIR has been registered on the basis of the complaint and a preliminary verification was also conducted.

"During the investigation, it was found that certain social media accounts, mentioned in the FIR, had further shared the misleading content. Some vulgar comments were also made, which amount to a violation of the IT Act. As part of the investigation, the accused has been issued a notice to join the probe," she said.

Regarding the other social media accounts, the SSP said that the police is resolving it through social media agencies and telecom service providers.

"We are trying to identify and confirm the culprits behind this," she added.

About the notice issued to academician Madhu Kishwar, SSP Kaur said, "Madhu Kishwar is the person to whom we had issued a notice. She was called for questioning, but she did not appear today. Our team has gone again to serve her notice. Further legal proceedings will be carried out, and the process is still ongoing."

"Our team has re-issued the notice for the coming days, and she will be required to join the investigation," Kaur emphasised.

Meanwhile, Madhu Kishwar in a social media post on Tuesday had alleged that the police visited her on Monday night to issue a notice in the case.

In another X post on Wednesday, she claimed that while the police again visited her to serve a notice, she was not provided with a copy of the FIR.

"The policemen who came with yet another notice were from Chandigarh police, with one person from Delhi Police. I am shocked that even this team refused to give me a copy of FIR but expect me to appear in Chandigarh Police Station's Sector- 26 on April 25," Kishwar said in a post on X.

Significantly, SSP Chandigarh mentioned that the one who was found in the real video has joined the preliminary investigation.

"We have done the preliminary verification and statement has been recorded which is also being verified," she said.

New Delhi/Bengaluru, April 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Prasar Bharati has withdrawn its decision to shift the Dharwad Akashvani Regional Centre, and it will continue to function from Dharwad in line with the wishes and sentiments of the people of North Karnataka.

The move comes following a request by the Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi.

The Union Minister had urged the Centre to retain the popular Akashvani regional centre, which holds a strong connect with the people of North Karnataka, in Dharwad, the statement from Pralhad Joshi's office said on Wednesday.

Earlier, the competent authority of Prasar Bharati had decided to shift the Dharwad Akashvani Regional Centre to Bengaluru.

The decision had triggered strong opposition from people across North Karnataka, who also submitted appeals to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.

In response, Pralhad Joshi took up the matter with the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting that the Centre be retained in Dharwad.

He highlighted the significance, reach, and necessity of continuing the Akashvani centre in Dharwad.

Responding to Union Minister Joshi's appeal, Ashwini Vaishnaw has now directed Prasar Bharati to continue operating the Dharwad Akashvani Regional Centre in Dharwad itself.

Pralhad Joshi has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on behalf of the people of North Karnataka.

Recently, Prasar Bharati had decided to shift the news broadcasting operations of the Dharwad Akashvani Regional Centre to Bengaluru.

The move, concerning a centre established in 1981, triggered widespread outrage across North Karnataka, with strong demands to withdraw the decision.

The Dharwad Akashvani centre, which began operations in 1981, has earned a deep connection with the people over the years. It aired its first news bulletin in the same year.

Since its inception, the news bulletin has had a duration of 10 minutes and continues to be broadcast daily at 7:05 a.m.

According to a survey conducted by the Audience Research Unit, the morning news bulletin still enjoys a significant listenership.

In addition, a five-minute district news bulletin is broadcast every Monday at 6:30 p.m.

The bulletins cover developmental programmes and cultural activities across districts, including Dharwad, Belagavi, Koppal, Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Raichur, Bagalkot, Bidar, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Vijayapura, and Yadgir.

Part-time correspondents from these districts prepare and send in their reports via email.

The competent authority said that the news bulletin from the Dharwad centre is being shifted to Bengaluru due to the increasing workload at the centre.

This move was seen as a step towards gradually weakening the centre.

The relocation was scheduled to take effect from May 15, 2026, and the Dharwad Regional Centre was instructed to make the necessary preparations.

Akashvani listeners and prominent personalities from North Karnataka region have raised concerns.

New Delhi, April 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Trouble mounted for the noted author Madhu Kishwar, as the Chandigarh police came looking for her in the national capital, over 'sharing' an objectionable and misleading video on the social media.

The Chandigarh police, which lodged the First Information Report (FIR) against her under multiple sections on April 19, reached her Delhi residence on Tuesday to hand over the notice.

Sarita Roy, Station House Officer (SHO) of Chandigarh's Sector-19, who led the police team to her residence told the media, "An FIR was filed on April 19 at Sector-26 Police Station."

Briefly sharing the details of case, SHO Roy said, "it's related to an objectionable video. It was shared and re-tweeted by her (Madhu Kishwar). We served her a notice under 35.3 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)."

She also told the reporters that the author has been asked to appear in Chandigarh police station on Wednesday and join the investigation.

Madhu Kishwar has been booked under multiple sections, including 196 (acts promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between groups based on religion, race, language), 336 (1) (forgery) and 356 (criminal defamation) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), besides Sections 66 C, D and Section 67.

The FIR was filed against Madhu Kishwar, purportedly based on a complaint filed by a Chandigarh-based person, who claimed that misleading and forged social media posts and videos were being shared by various accounts, including her with a "malafide" intent.

The author also took to social media to acknowledge that an FIR was lodged against her and the police team reached her residence.

Informing that it was a late-night visit by the police, Madhu Kishwar also assured them of cooperation.

"Since the law forbids the police to visit or arrest women after dark and before sunrise, I spoke on phone to the leader of the delegation. She told me that their team has come to serve notice regarding an FIR registered against me in Chandigarh. I insisted that they go by the law and come in the morning. Both sides maintained perfect courtesy," she wrote in a post on social media platform X.

Mumbai, April 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Monday said the media is not merely a tool for disseminating information but a powerful force that shapes societal mindsets, and must therefore exercise special sensitivity, responsibility, and accuracy while handling subjects related to women.

She was speaking at the inauguration of a one-day workshop titled "Women, Media, and Technology", organised jointly by the National Commission for Women and the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR), Government of Maharashtra.

Rahatkar noted that while women have made remarkable strides in fields such as science, technology, defence, administration, and entrepreneurship, significant challenges remain. In this context, she said, the role of the media becomes even more critical.

"While speed is important in the digital era, the credibility of news is far more vital. Fact-checking is essential to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation," she said.

Highlighting key pillars for ethical journalism on women’s issues, Rahatkar stressed that protecting identity must be paramount. When reporting on crimes against women, the dignity and privacy of the victim must be the highest priority, and a victim’s identity must never be disclosed, she said. On gender-sensitive reporting, she added that it is not optional but a professional responsibility for every journalist.

“Journalists must have accurate knowledge of laws concerning women to ensure reporting remains fact-based and legally sound. Media houses should respect the judicial process and avoid conducting ‘media trials’,” she said.

Rahatkar urged the media to look beyond reporting only criminal incidents. She encouraged journalists to frame women’s issues through social, economic, and strategic lenses, ensuring that the voices of marginalised women reach the mainstream.

She acknowledged positive shifts in recent years, such as increased protection of victim identities, inclusion of more women experts in discussions, and consistent coverage of the POSH Act (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) and issues such as human trafficking.

The Chairperson emphasised the need to give greater visibility to women’s success stories and their journeys of struggle.

“Such stories bring about positive social change and create role models for the new generation,” she said.

Colombo, April 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) The 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), a 141-page document, formally adopted during China's National People's Congress (NPC) Two Sessions in early March 2026 appears to be a strategic blueprint for deepening Beijing's presence across the developing world, more so in South Asia, a media report said on Sunday.

The Two Sessions, which bring together the NPC and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, function as the institutional machinery through which the Communist Party converts political priorities into binding policy.

Under Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, these documents have shifted further away from high-speed growth toward technological self-reliance, national security, and state guidance of the economy, said a report in Asia News Post.

This year's sessions institutionalised that shift at scale, and South Asia is expected to feel the consequences across the next five years in ways that go well beyond conventional infrastructure lending.

China watchers have noted that Beijing is likely to leverage the overall planning process for the 15th Five-Year Plan, a 141-page document, to augment support for its Global Governance Initiative and Global Development Initiative from Global South countries, the media report added.

South Asian states except India are, for the most part, poorly positioned to resist this logic.

Their infrastructure financing needs remain enormous, their capacity to independently develop AI governance frameworks is limited, and the institutional alternatives, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Western bilateral lenders, move slowly and come with conditionalities that are politically costly.

Beijing's offer is quicker, cheaper to accept in the short term, and packaged in the language of South-South solidarity and shared development.

The Two Sessions and the 15th Five-Year Plan together signal that China's South Asia strategy has matured beyond the blunt instrument of loans for ports. It has become more subtle, more technology-dense and significantly harder to reverse.

"The question for Dhaka, Colombo, Kathmandu, and Islamabad is not whether they wish to engage with China, the trade and investment numbers make disengagement implausible," the media report said.

The question is whether they are building the institutional capacity to set terms on that engagement before the next five years lock in a new generation of dependencies.

On current evidence, most are not moving fast enough to answer that question confidently, the media report added.

Hyderabad, April 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Police have advised all media houses, digital platforms, and individuals to refrain from publishing or circulating any content that may disclose or lead to the identification of a trainee pilot who alleged sexual assault by a former flight instructor at a pilot training institute in Hyderabad.

C.H. Sridhar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri Zone, Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate, said on Thursday that it has come to their notice through the victim and their family that certain unverified and misleading information is being circulated in connection with the sexual assault case.

The DCP stated that the case is under investigation and all due procedures as per law are being followed. At this stage, any form of speculation or unverified information may affect the investigation and cause unnecessary distress.

The police requested the public and media to note that, as per Section 72 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (corresponding to Section 228A IPC), disclosure of the identity of a rape victim, directly or indirectly, is a punishable offence.

The Supreme Court in Nipun Saxena vs Union of India (2018) has prohibited disclosure of any details that may lead to the identification of the victim, including family particulars, place of residence, educational institution, or workplace.

It has also been emphasised that even indirect disclosure, such as mentioning the training institution, locality, or family details, which may reveal the identity of the victim, should be strictly avoided.

The DCP advised media houses and digital platforms to refrain from publishing or circulating any content that may disclose or lead to the identification of the victim, her family, or the work/study places, etc.

He asked them to remove/delete any such content, if already uploaded or shared on digital platforms, including YouTube and other social media channels.

Begumpet police have booked a former flight instructor at an aviation academy for rape after a female trainee pilot accused him of violating her.

As per the victim’s complaint, he had lured her by offering to help her get a good score in the course and, in exchange, sought sexual favours. She alleged that the offence took place last year.

Based on her complaint, police registered a case under Sections 64(2)(f) and 351(2) of the BNS and launched an investigation.

The 30-year-old accused is said to be in his native place in Kerala.

Amaravati, April 7 (SocialNews.XYZ) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday condemned the attempt by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) workers to attack the office of a Telugu media outlet in Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister described the incident as a direct assault on media freedom.

He said that the attack was carried out because the media outlet questioned the stand of former Chief Minister and YSRCP Chief Jagan Mohan Reddy on Amaravati.

In a statement, Chandrababu Naidu criticised the YSRCP for allegedly misusing its own media platforms while resorting to baseless allegations and abusive rhetoric against independent media organisations.

He noted that despite facing harassment and conspiracies during the previous five years of YSRCP government, the regional media channel continued to function without fear.

He remarked that the participation of sitting MLAs and former Ministers, accompanied by mobs in targeting a media office is a clear reflection of the YSRCP's unruly culture.

The Chief Minister also praised the regional media outlet's Managing Director Vemuri Radhakrishna for running the newspaper and channel fearlessly for decades despite facing cases, attacks and sustained pressure.

Chandrababu Naidu asserted that attempts to intimidate the media through attacks, protests and threats have no place in a democratic society and such political tactics have become outdated.

He also alleged that the people, especially women, have not forgotten the conduct of YSRCP leaders, including their treatment of women and even their own family members during their tenure in power.

The Chief Minister accused the YSRCP of resorting to diversionary politics, saying that instead of responding to the editorial questioning on its alleged conspiracies against Amaravati, the party has chosen to engage in attacks and protests.

The YSRCP on Monday had lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting against the media outlet for allegedly broadcasting defamatory and derogatory content.

In a letter to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar on Monday, YSRCP MLC and party's general secretary Lella Appireddy sought immediate intervention and appropriate action against the media outlet, its anchor, editor, and management for allegedly broadcasting defamatory, derogatory, misleading, and unethical content through its electronic and digital platforms.

The MLC cited allegedly objectionable and defamatory language used by the news anchor while describing members and supporters of the YSRCP.

The YSRCP quoted the news anchor as saying that party supporters would "blindly believe" anything said by Jagan Mohan Reddy and used language the party described as abusive and derogatory.

Islamabad, April 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) planned protest against increasing fuel prices and inflation, two roads leading to the Karachi Press Club (KPC) were shut on Sunday, with the police citing "security" reasons for the closure of the routes, media reported.

In a statement issued, the Karachi Traffic Police (KTP) said both tracks of Din Mohammad Wafai Road were closed.

It further mentioned that Sarwar Shaheed Road from the Coast Guard Officers' Mess towards Angle Chowk at the Karachi Press Club was also closed for traffic, Pakistan's leading daily Dawn reported.

Elaborating on alternative routes, the Karachi Traffic Police said traffic was diverted from MR Kyani Road towards the street with the police station.

It said that traffic coming from Fawara Chowk were being diverted towards Aiwan-i-Sadr and Zainab Market, while vehicles from the Coast Guards' Mess could go towards Passport Office.

The roads have been shut ahead of a planned protest by the PTI against inflation and hike in petroleum prices.

The PTI had announced that it would hold protest outside KPC against rising inflation in the country and the increase in prices of petroleum products to record levels.

Following police's orders about road closure, PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh said the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led "so-called democratic government had closed off the press club through its police".

He added that the PTI had called for peaceful protests in Sindh, including at KPC, on Sunday.

He asked, "Where else should we go if not the press club?", noting that some "favourite political parties" were even given permission to block Sharea Faisal for their gatherings.

He said that PTI's protest would be peaceful and asked the people to gather at the KPC, Dawn reported.

On Friday, the Human Rights Council (HRC) of Pakistan staged a protest at Karachi Press Club against the fuel price hike, calling it "unjustified" and warning that it imposes an additional financial burden on the public.

According to the rights body, a large number of citizens, civil society members, and activists participated in the protest, expressing serious concern over the continuous rise in fuel prices and its direct impact on inflation and the cost of living.

"The speakers collectively demanded that the government take immediate steps to control inflation and provide relief to the masses. They warned that if such anti-public measures continue, the protest movement will be expanded further," the HRC of Pakistan said.

Mumbai, April 4 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray on Saturday said that the passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, 2026, to ratify the status of Amaravati as the official capital has sparked intense concern in Maharashtra.

While the bill specifically addresses Andhra Pradesh’s capital, the Thackeray camp in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana' warned that it sets a dangerous constitutional precedent that could directly impact the future of Mumbai.

The editorial said that the central point of contention lies in the authority of the Parliament to designate a state capital. Under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution, the Lok Sabha holds the power to alter state boundaries, increase or decrease a state's area, change names, or create new states. However, the authority to decide a state's capital has traditionally been reserved for the states themselves.

"Critics, including Anil Shidore, argue that pushing an 'Amaravati Bill' through the Parliament is a calculated manoeuvre. The fear is that this 'underground tunnel' approach by the Central government could eventually be used to bypass Maharashtra's state authority regarding Mumbai," it alleged.

The editorial postulated a potential roadmap for the Central takeover of India’s financial hub. The Parliament could introduce a bill declaring Mumbai a "National Economic Zone", and under the guise of praising its international stature and economic prowess, the city could be converted into a Union Territory.

Taking a dig at the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, and Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, the editorial said that they will term it a "matter of pride" for Mumbai.

"There is a growing apprehension that Mumbai could be reduced to a 'vassal' of the Centre, while a 'second, third, or fourth Mumbai' is designated as the new state capital of Maharashtra," the editorial claimed.

The Shiv Sena-UBT also launched a scathing attack on Maharashtra’s current leadership, accusing them of lacking "Maharashtra Pride.”

The editorial notes a cultural shift where traditional Marathi titles like 'Raosaheb' and 'Taiseheb' are being traded for 'Raobhai' and 'Taiben,' symbolising a perceived submission to external political interests. The Thackeray camp reminded that Mumbai was won through the sacrifice of 106 martyrs. While the city has always been a hub for wealthy "Sheth" individuals, previous leaders and organisations like the Shiv Sena ensured these interests did not supersede the state's identity.

According to the editorial, despite the legislative victory, the ground reality in Amaravati remains grim.

"Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the loss of Hyderabad to Telangana, Amaravati was declared the new capital. Yet, despite thousands of acres of fertile land being acquired from farmers and hundreds of crores in central funding, the city’s construction has stalled. Local reports describe 'skeletons' of administrative buildings that have become the subject of ghost stories, emphasising that legal mandates do not necessarily equal physical progress," it noted.

Taking aim at the present Maharashtra leadership, the Thackeray camp claimed that the same "weak and indifferent" leadership that remains silent on cultural and regional issues today may eventually allow Mumbai to be severed from Maharashtra.

Alappuzha (Kerala), April 4 (SocialNews.XYZ) With days to go for the Kerala Assembly elections, the Congress has escalated its attack against the CPI-M-backed Kairali News TV channel, accusing it of circulating a morphed and defamatory image of party General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal in a bid to mislead voters.

Congress Legal Cell chairman Dr Abhishek Singhvi has lodged a formal complaint before the Election Commission, alleging that the image was digitally manipulated to falsely suggest that Venugopal was accepting money.

The complaint further states that a green circle was deliberately inserted in the visual to reinforce the misleading narrative and influence public perception.

Describing the episode as a "planned attempt" to tarnish Venugopal’s image ahead of polling, the Congress has argued that the circulation of such content violates the Model Code of Conduct and undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

Singhvi has sought the Commission’s urgent intervention, calling for an immediate probe into the incident and strict action against those responsible.

The complaint also demands that the doctored image be taken down from all social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook and X, where it is alleged to have been widely shared in a coordinated manner.

Parallelly, Congress state Vice President A.A. Shukoor has approached the Alappuzha North police, seeking criminal action against the channel and its officials.

The complaint invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to forgery, spreading enmity and criminal conspiracy, along with Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.

Shukkur said the incident reflects a broader pattern of attempts to derail the democratic process through misinformation and targeted character assassination of opposition leaders.

He asserted that the Congress would pursue the matter legally and politically, signalling a sharper contest as campaigning enters its final stretch.

Kerala goes to the polls on April 9 to elect 140 new legislators
