By Rohan Agarwal

New Delhi, Jan 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) Projected as an example for their seniors, united Left parties in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) successfully defeated one of the biggest threats in their fortress, the ABVP. The team later went on to trigger a nationwide students' roar against fee hike in many universities.

However, cracks are surfacing in the Left front.

Two of the 'Left United' -- as the combined four students' unions call themselves -- have been at loggerheads for a very long time now. The tussle came out in the open when a senior Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) activist took to social media to attack All India Students Association (AISA).

In her Facebook post that was also shared as a status on Whatsaap, Swati Singh, a two-time councillor, alleged that the AISA was falsely accusing the DSF of "betraying" the students' movement against fee hike. She later also alleged that AISA's accusation stemmed from the fact that it was not given presidential post.

"Bhai itta pyaar kyu hai humse? President post nahi milega to yehi sab kroge? (why so much of love for us? If you are denied presidential post will you do all this?") Swati Singh said in her FB post.

Swati in her post had attached a screenshot of Whtasaap status where her contact was saved as Vivek JNU, wrote: "If there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm."

"Dedicated to D.S.F," the screenshot read.

The rift appeared sharper as a senior AISA leader, who was also a former JNUSU member, told IANS: "They (DSF) had always tried to kill the protest -- they opposed our call for academic activity boycott and they opposed our call for registration boycott."

The student leader added, "You ask any student he/she will tell you, it was us who forced them to call for a meeting with students and in the meeting they had to accept the decision for a boycott of academic activities and registration."

However, the DSF stuck to its ground as DSF's Saket Moon denied commenting on the situation and told IANS to contact Sarika Chaudhary, DSF secretary.

Sarika also denied commenting on the issue, but maintained that unity among Left organisations was foremost and that they would never do anything to weaken it.

"We won't comment on any allegations until the person comes on record. These allegations are all false propaganda," Sarika said.

The Left united front was formed by all Left-aligned students' organisations in JNU, after ABVP (RSS' students' wing) started gaining momentum on the campus.

The move was to thwart splitting of votes among Left organisations, which could have benefited the ABVP.

Four Left organisations became part of the front which included, Students Federation of India (SFI), AISA, DSF and All India Students Federation (AISF).

Every year each organisation gets one of four posts to contest. This year SFI's Aishe Ghosh was selected as Left united's presidential candidate, while Saket Moon of DSF was chosen as vice-presidential candidate, AISA's Satish Chandra Yadav had contested for General Secretary's post and AISF's Danish Ali fought for Joint Secretary's post.

All four candidates of 'Left United' had won in the JNUSU elections held last year in August.

New Delhi, Jan 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Three days post the deadline for registration for the winter semester in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the administration of the varsity has claimed that 82% of the total 8,500 enrolled students have cleared their hostel dues.

The administration added that it was hoping for the number to go up further as the registration was still open but with late fee.

"Out of 8,500 students at JNU, 82% of students have cleared their hostel dues for winter registration as on Monday," a statement by the JNU administration read.

"The remaining students are also expected to complete their registration process since it is still open with a late fee," the statement added.

In the statement the administration also claimed that this year the Republic Day parade in the campus will feature NCC cadets, which would be the first time since the university was founded.

"This year, for the first time, the NCC cadets of the varsity will be participating in a parade at the venue of flag hoisting during the Republic Day celebrations at JNU," the university administration added in the statement.

On January 16, JNU had extended the last date of student registrations for the winter semester to January 17. The extension was announced for the third time since the original deadline of January 5.

New Delhi, Jan 16 (SocialNews.XYZ) Days after the registration process for the new semester in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was made functional again, Jawaharlal Nehru University Student's Union (JNUSU) on Thursday requested the students, especially those who have not registered, to continue to boycott the process.

"The JNUSU, keeping in mind the opinion of various centre level GBMs (general body meetings), is expediting an immediate legal challenge to the IHA manual seeking interim relief. Therefore, we request the student community, especially those who have not registered, to continue to boycott the registration process in the light of such a move. Our unity at this juncture is very critical," said a JNUSU statement.

The classes for the next semester cannot happen unless the backlog of the previous semester is cleared, said the statement, adding that the JNUSU will coordinate with the JNUTA (JNU Teacher's Association) to undertake parallel classes on various topics immediately.

"The JNUSU will undertake all manner and means of struggle to see to it that the students facing proctorial enquiries and punitive actions like suspension/eviction are not victimised and their registration is completed on a priority basis," the statement said.

In the meeting, the student body decided to intensify it's movement for the "removal" of M. Jagadesh Kumar as the Vice Chancellor of JNU.

It said that JNUSU will take up various programmes and campaigns in support of public education and against the Violence that JNU has had to face. Over 4,000 registrations have been done in JNU for the new semester so far, said a source.

The registration process got hampered after some students of the varsity had allegedly barged into the server room and disrupted Wi-Fi services on the campus in an attempt to prevent students from getting registered for the new semester. This had forced the administration to stop the registration process for three days.

However, following the January 5 violence on the campus, the registration was stopped for three days which forced the administration to extend the registration date.

New Delhi, Jan 16 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Jawaharlal Nehru University has extended the last date of student registrations for the winter semester, the third time since the original deadline of January 5.

According to a release issued on Thursday by the assistant registrar for evaluations, the last date for students' registration for the winter semester has been extended to Friday, January 17.

Students can also register, by paying the prescribed fine, till 21 days after the January 17 deadline for the winter session. However, for applications submitted beyond 21 days after the deadline, students will have to make a written request and registration with a fine will be approved as per the vice chancellor's discretionary powers.

This is the third time that the winter registration deadline has been extended. The original last date for registrations to the winter semester was January 5.

However, the deadline was extended to January 12 after some students had vandalised the university computer server room in a bid to hinder the registration process over fee hike. The deadline was further extended to January 15 and has now been extended to January 17.

New Delhi, Jan 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has registered a complaint from a Delhi University student Komal Sharma, who was identified as the 'masked woman' in the January 5-Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) violence, against the director and reporter of a national news channel.

According to the NCW, she has alleged that a national news channel falsely implicated her in their sting operation. The NCW also said that according to the complaint filed by Sharma, the news channel has defamed her by identifying and revealing her name as one of the attackers in the JNU violence case.

Sharma has informed the NCW that she has been wrongly named in the whole incident, and was never approached by that channel for the confirmation or clarification in the alleged matter. She has requested the NCW to look into the matter.

ABVP member Komal Sharma on Wednesday approached the NCW to seek their help. Sharma was identified as the 'masked women' seen in a video during the violence that erupted in the JawaharLal Nehru University campus on January 5.

A police official had said that they called up the "masked woman", identified as Komal Sharma, but her phone was found to be switched off. "A notice has been sent to her to join the investigation.

"Sharma is a student of Delhi University's Daulat Ram College," said the police official.

The police have so far issued notices to nine accused asking them to join the investigation into the JNU violence. Seven out of the nine suspects are from Left organisations.

Out of the seven accused, three -- JNUSU President Aishe Gosh, Bhaskar Vijay and Pankaj joined the investigation on Monday.

Other alleged members of the ABVP Akshat Awasthi and Rohit Shah, whose faces emerged during a TV channel sting, refused to join the probe, police said, and expressed hope on Tuesday they would join the investigation.

The police have decided to send legal notice to 37 more people involved in the violence that left 20 people injured.

New Delhi, Jan 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the Delhi Police to summon the members of the two suspected WhatsApp Groups -- Friends of RSS and Unity Against Left -- and seize their phones in connection with the violence that erupted in the Jawaharlal Nehru University on January 5.

Justice Brijesh Sethi directed WhatsApp and Google to preserve the data based on the basic subscriber information including the email id as per their policy.

The directions came as the court was hearing a plea filed by three JNU professors seeking preservence of CCTV footage and evidence relating to WhatsApp groups.

The petition, filed through advocates Abhik Chimni, Maanav Kumar and Roshni Naamboodiry sought a direction to the Delhi Police to retrieve all CCTV footage of JNU campus.

During the course of hearing, counsel for Google argued that WhatsApp should share the email address. If they did then they will preserved by the search engine.

WhatsApp responded: "We don't have access to the chat content. We will put it on affidavit."

"It works on end to end encryption and the only way to access and preserve it is by preserving the phone of those persons. I am willing to do what law intends to. No technology to break through that encryption," the counsel for WhatsApp explained further.

Responding, Google's counsel said: "WhatsApp can give basic subscriber information and that's at least can be done."

Senior advocate Rebecca John appearing for the petitioner said that basic users entered in this group and exited. Phone is a primary evidence. There are many numbers. Once police seizes any phone they can get basic information from WhatsApp.

Delhi government standing counsel Rahul Mehra appearing for the Delhi Police said that they have identified 37 people of the WhatsApp groups. Some awere absconding but they will all be summoned.

After the conclusion of the hearing the petition filed by JNU professors Ameet Parameswaran, Atul Sood and Shukla Vinayak was disposed off.

New Delhi, Jan 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Facing allegations that its supporters were involved in attack on students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) recently, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) here on Monday accused pro-Left students for the disruption of peace on campus.

At a press conference at Press Club, the ABVP said the violence was carried out by the Maoists, insurgent groups. They also charged the JNU Students' Union with harassing students by not letting them attend classes, locking down the building and preventing them from appearing in examinations.

"The 5 January attack was planned and it will be wrong to say that it was a protest against fee hike by students. Attacks were not by students but the Maoists. The JNU has been under the Maoist attack since the first protest on October 28, and it culminated on January 5," said ABVP National General Secretary Nidhi Tripathi.

They also shared videos of attacks, which showed Communist Party of India leader D. Raja's daughter Aprajita Raja holding stick and standing with JNUSU Joint Secretary Amutha Jaideep, JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh with the mob, people collecting stones and sticks, and members of students' union Satish Chandra Yadav and Dolon attacking students.

New Delhi, Jan 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' here on Monday said the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) stir was no longer justified as the fee issues had been sorted out after several rounds of talks with representatives of students and teachers.

"The main demand related to increase in service and utility charges and others has been settled. Thus, continuation of agitation is no longer justified," Nishank was quoted as saying by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

He also appealed that institutions of higher education should not be converted into a political arena.

A high-powered committee was set up by the MHRD to restore the normal functioning of JNU through dialogue and to advise the university administration for resolution of contentious issues.

The decision to waive off service and utility charges was taken at a meeting between the panel and the JNU administration on December 11.

Till now over 5,000 students had registered for the winter season, the Minister added.

The JNUSU along with students have been protesting against the hike in hostel charges since October 28, last year.

New Delhi, Jan 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) A team of nearly a dozen Delhi Police Crime Branch sleuths stationed at Jawaharlal Nehru University has started a probe into the Jan 5 campus violence, according to a senior Crime Branch official.

Akshat Awasthi and Rohit Shah, ABVP members, whose faces emerged during a TV channel sting, refused to join the investigation, police said, hoping they would join the probe on Tuesday.

The official said the police called up a "masked woman", identified as Komal Sharma, but her phone was found to be switched off. "A notice has been sent to her to join the investigation. She is a student of Delhi University's Daulat Ram College," said the official.

The police have so far issued notices to 9 accused asking them to join the investigation into the JNU violence. Seven out of the 9 suspects are from Left organisations. Out of the seven accused, three -- JNUSU President Aishe Gosh, Bhaskar Vijay and Pankaj -- joined the investigation on Monday.

Aishe Gosh was questioned separately today, a senior police officer said, adding one of the questions the police asked her was who had hit her and whether she could identify the suspect.

She was also asked how many stitches she received for her head injury.
Ghosh had told a channel that she was hit by an iron rod and that she received 10 stitches on the upper part of her forehead.

The other suspects, Bhaskar Vijay and Pankaj, were questioned together by a Special Investigation Team.

The police are trying to coalsce all the information to form a sequence of violence that rocked the university on Jan 5.

The police have decided to send a legal notice to 37 more people, part of WhatsApp group involved in the violence.

New Delhi, Jan 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Congress fact finding team which visited JNU and submitted a report to the Congress President wants the JNU Vice Chancellor to be dismissed and criminal investigation to be initiated against him.

The team said that "Vice Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar should be dismissed immediately and an independent inquiry should be set up to look at all appointments made from 27/01/2016 (date of appointment) till date and all other financial and administrative decisions taken during his tenure should also be investigated."

"Criminal investigation must be initiated against the Vice Chancellor, the company that provides security service and members of the faculty who conspired with the attackers to unleash the violence," said the report.

The team also sought an independent judicial enquiry to be conducted into the events of January 5 that led to violence on the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The team also recommended fixing accountability of the Delhi Police Commissioner and other police officials because of their failure to act on the emergency calls by the students and faculty members on January 5 and in light of the "overwhelming" prima facie evidence that they facilitated the criminal elements on campus.

"Immediate rollback of the fee hike as implemented by the university authorities and recognition of JNUSU as an elected body so that proper consultation can take place between the administration and the students on the fee and other issues," the team said.

New Delhi, Jan 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) Hundreds of Delhi University students, led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), marched on Saturday to protest against "left sponsored" violence in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The protesters also extended their support to the contentious Citizen (Amendment) Act.

The march started from the Arts faculty in DU's North Campus and went through the campus Law Centre, Ramjas College, Kirorimal College, Hansraj College and Daulatram College before concluding near the statue of Swami Vivekananda in the Arts faculty.

Students participating in the march demanded legal action against those involved in violence on JNU campus and condemned the Left's act of violent opposition to opinions opposed to them.

Nidhi Tripathi, National General Secretary, ABVP, said, "Students across numerous educational institutions are coming out in support of the CAA. It needs to be highlighted that the Left and the political parties in opposition have conspired to create a violent atmosphere in the country by spreading lies and misinformation about the CAA."

"These parties and the people involved in violence need to understand that democracy requires dialogue and has no space for such violent activities," she added.

A joint statement issued by DUSU President Akshit Dahiya and Joint Secretary Shivangi Kharwal said, "Indian universities have always been a space for dissent and discussion, but the Left has always been violent towards people with a different opinion.

"The Left and the opposition have been trying to manipulate the students and use them as a weapon in their fight to regain lost political ground."

New Delhi, Jan 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Saturday demanded that the probe into the violence that erupted inside the JNU campus on January 5 that left more than 30 students injured and cascaded into a Pan-India student movement, should not be biased.

Singh told the media that questions regarding the Delhi Police's probe into the matter have been for a number of reasons and the police must be cautious before framing charges against the students.

"The JNU probe should be unbiased. The police have been in for criticism following the rise in crime, gang war, assault on lawyers and several other cases. They should not frame charges against the students," Singh said.

The Delhi Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) violence, on Friday identified nine students, including JNU Students Union chief Aishe Ghosh, as suspects in the incidents in the varsity premises that left 36 injured.

According to police sources, most of them are members of Left-wing student organisations.

The Congress had accused the Delhi Police of carrying out a shoddy probe into the January 5 violence at the varsity under political pressure. While the BJP have been accused the Left for the violence.

New Delhi, Jan 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) Delhi police Special Investigating Team (SIT) has identified the WhatsApp group named 'Unity against Left' linked to the January 5 mob attack on JNU students and faculty.

According to a senior Delhi Police officer heading the investigation, they are not ruling out ABVP activists' involvement in the mob attack. The 37 of 60 members of the WhatsApp group linked to the mob attack was created just an hour before the violence took place in the varsity campus.

Further, police is also going to investigate the role of Rohit Singh, BA (French) 1st year JNU student and Akshat Awasthi, also enrolled in the same course in the university, in the violence. Around twenty ABVP activists who are alleged to be involved in the mob attack will also to be subjected to investigation by police, said a source.

Meanwhile, a video surfaced in the social media also tells Akshat Awasthi claiming that on the day of the violence, lights of the campus were switched off by the Delhi police personnel.

Earlier, the Delhi Police Crime Branch had released photographs of nine suspects, including JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh, whom they blamed to be have been involved in the violence. During a Press conference held by DCP (Crime), Joy Tirkey, he flashed a photograph in which, Aishe Ghosh was seen leading the mob inside JNU campus.

The police said that Aishe Ghosh led a mob that attacked Periyar Hostel inside the university. The police did not present the CCTV footage claiming that the server room was vandalised in the violence.

However, according to DCP Tirkey, they have not detained anyone so far. But notices to the identified people will be served to join the investigation which is still going on.

The students so far identified by the Delhi police on the January 5 attack include Aishe Ghosh (JNUSU president), Vikas Patel (MA Korean Studies), Pankaj Mishra (School of Social Sciences), Chuchunm Kumar (former JNU student), Yogender Bhardwaj (PhD Sanskrit), Dolan Samanata (School of Social Sciences), Sucheta Talukdar (School of Social Sciences), Priya Ranjan (School of Language and cultural Studies) and Vaskar Vijay.

According to police sources, most of them are members of Left-wing student organisations.

New Delhi, Jan 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) violence, on Friday identified nine students, including JNU Students Union chief Aishe Ghosh, as suspects in the incidents in the varsity premises that left 36 injured.

The SIT sleuths have clearly stated that Ghosh was behind a mob attack in the afternoon on January 5 at Periyar hostel. The SIT has also stated that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members in retaliation of being attacked at Periyar hostel in the afternoon carried out attack during evening at Sabarmati Hostel.

The SIT has also said that the JNU Students' Union comprising of four Left-affiliated organisations -- Students Federation of India (SFI), All India Students Federation (AISF), All India Students Association (AISA) and Democratic Students Federation (DSF) - are behind entire mess and violence in the varsity, from disrupting other students to carry out studies to picking up fights.

"They are identified as Chunchun Kumar, Ex Student; Pankaj Mishra, School of Social Sciences (SSS), Mahi-Mandavi hostel; Aishe Ghosh, President JNUSU; Vaskar Vijay Mech, MA, School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU; Sucheta Taludar, SFI School of Social Sciences, JNU; Priya Ranjan, School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies, Mandavi Hostel; Dolan Samanta, School of Social Science, Centre of Historical Studies; Yogendra Bhardwaj, PHD Sanskrit JNU and Vikas Patel, MS Korean," the SIT said in its statement.

The SIT, headed by DCP, Crime, Joy Tirkey, comprises three Assistant Commissioners of Police and 60 personnel.

"In last few days, misinformation and wrong information are in circulation, particularly about investigation in the JNU violence cases," Tirkey told reporters.

"We are briefing you so that the chain of incidents could be brought in right perspective. We are updating about investigation done so far. These cases are related to reputed institution where students were involved in the violence," he said.

He explained that the JNU administration decided to carry out online registration of the students for the next semester between January 1 and 5.

"Registration happens every six months. In January, it is called winter registration. This registration was to be carried within five day timeline. Earlier, it used to be manually but eventually online portal was started," the DCP said.

This was a provisional registration wherein students had to pay Rs 300 and register themselves for the next semester.

"These four organisations - the Left student unions - and their sympathisers and members were against the registration process," stressed DCP adding that these groups' members were on protest since October 28, 2019 over fee hike and other issues.

They had been demanding to resolve the issues first and then will allow registration process.

"I interacted with students for last four days and majority of them actually wanted to get registered because new year has started and they have to further study," he said pointing that these particular groups were, however, not allowing these students to register and when they tried to do it they were threatened and intimidated.

These things have come into the investigation so far, the officer said.

Explaining the sequence of the events, Tirkey said that on January 3, at around 1 p.m., members of these four organisations during online registration process near centralised computer area forcefully entered into the server room and dismantle the computers, manhandled the staff, threw them out of the server room and closed down the server.

Because of this, the registration process stopped. The JNU administration gave a complaint regarding this and an FIR of assault, criminal intimidation and Section 3 of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act against few students, including Ghosh, was registered. A total eight students were named in the FIR.

Thereafter, it took around three hours for JNU authorities to restore the system. When the system got restored, these organisations' members thought their issues have not been resolved and administration was successfully carrying out registration process.

Seeing this, on January 4, these organisation members again tried to manhandle the staff of the varsity at server room in the morning but as the authorities were fully prepared they could not do anything.

But during afternoon, these organisation members broke down the glass frame door and damaged the servers. It was major loss to the authorities.

"The JNU administration finally started the server on Thursday and registration process started," he said. The administration gave a complaint the local police following which FIR was registered. These four organisations had been at odds with the authorities and other JNU students.

Explaining the sequence, he said that on January 5 at 11 a.m., four students were trying to register for next semester and they were sitting on a bench outside School of Social Sciences. "Then these group members reached over there bashed them. When the security guards came to rescue them they were also beaten up at 11.30 a.m.," he said.

Thereafter, at 3.45 p.m. members of these four organisations carried out attack at Periyar hostel. They had mufflers at their faces, but now they have been identified.

"Some members of JNU Student Union including its President Aishe Ghosh have also been identified in the camera. They went inside the hostel premises and carried out vandalism, students were beaten up and many got injured," he said.

Police in plainclothes police were there and with the help of the teachers, the injured were taken to AIIMS trauma centre. "During this attack, specific rooms were targeted inside the hostels," the DCP stressed.

When police were shifting the injured to the hospital, there was a peace meeting organized at interaction of Periyar hostel and Sabarmati Hostel. A congregation of around 150 students and teachers gathered over there at 5.30 p.m.

As the meeting was going on, another group of students came, a few in muffled faces, carrying sticks and rod and had arguments at the congregation which dispersed fearing violence.

They went to the specific room and attacked the students and vandalized the hostel.

"In both attack in two different hostels, there were internal elements in the mob. They specific rooms and specific students were targeted. It is tough for outsider to come and carry out attack," said the DCP adding that at 7 p.m. it was dark and it would have been tough for a outsider to carry out such attack.

"Spill over of the attack also happened in Narmada hostel," he said.

The DCP said that they have spoken cross section of teachers, students, staff, administration and hostel wardens. "We have taken visitors register. We have carried out technical analysis on who are outsiders and who are hostellers," he said.

He also said that he could not get the CCTV footage as on January 3-4, members of these organisations damaged the administration server room. "We collected lot of videos and photo graphs viral on social platforms. We spoke to around 30 to 32 witnesses in the cases and accordingly identified nine suspected students so far," he said.

The DCP clarified that they have not detained any single student and they will call these all nine students and will seek explanation about their role in the violent attack.

He also said that he has found that a few whatsapp groups were active and a whatsapp group was formed at 5.30 p.m. only with name Unity against Left. "We have identified the administrator of the group and it had 60 members. We will go through other groups also," he added.

By Rohan Agarwal

New Delhi, Jan 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Minutes after she was named as a suspect by the Delhi police for the violence that broke out at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on December 5, JNU Students Union (JNUSU) President was seen reading a newspaper while sitting on a mattress with a heater by her side.

While her friends are fearing her arrest, Ghosh remained calm as she said, "Why should I fear? It's going to be a new experience if I get arrested."

The Delhi Police on Friday released images of nine suspects in the JNU violence case, claiming that Ghosh had led a mob which attacked the Periyar hostel on the campus last Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to IANS, Ghosh accused the Delhi Police of conducting a biased probe into the case and claimed that though she was in the video, she didn't lead the mob but was actually telling them to not indulge in violence.

"I was in the video, yes, but I was not leading the. As the President of JNUSU, it is my duty to reach such places and calm down the situation for peace and harmony on the campus," Ghosh said.

When asked if the JNUSU or she herself was involved in destroying the server room of the university to disrupt the registration process, Ghosh claimed that the students union was not involved in any such act.

"Not at all, we have minutes of every general body meeting where we have made it clear that no one will force students to not register," the SFI activist said.

She also used JNU Vice Chancellor's statement to prove her words.

"They say over 3,500 students have registered. If that is true, then how could we force anyone to not register? Those who want to register can go ahead," she said.

Ghosh also accused the Delhi Police of conducting an one-sided investigation into the matter.

"They have not yet acted on the FIR I lodged, but have named me as a suspect. Did I injure myself? They are not working independently," she said.

Ghosh, who hails from Durgapur in West Bengal, was allegedly hit on her head with an iron rod during the violence on campus last Sunday. She had received 15 stitches on her head and a hair line fracture on her hand.

"I was advised by doctors to have complete rest for at least a week after the incident, but the movement for students' rights is above everything," she said.

When asked if she was worried about her security after the incident, Ghosh shot back, "What worry? It's us who have to keep the campus safe. I even went to my hostel after the incident without any fear," she said.

Ghosh has been leading the JNU students' agitation against the proposed hike in hostel fees since October 28 last year. However, pictures of blood oozing from of her head on January 5 have catapulted her stature to that of a national students' leader.

New Delhi, Jan 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh has categorically denied that she had taken part in the violence that erupted at the JNU campus on January 5.

The Delhi Police had earlier on Thursday released the details of four people, including Aishe Ghosh, suspected to have unleashed violence in the varsity premises.

Speaking to the media, Aishe accused the Delhi Police of conducting biased investigations into the incidents that have kept JNU campus on the boil since January 5. Claiming to have full faith in the law and order system of the country, Aishe, however, said it was a wrong act of the Delhi Police to make her a suspect in the violence.

Acknowledging that she was present in the campus, Aishe denied that she had any part in the violence. She said that photographs do not prove her complicity.

Aishe also accused the Delhi Police of indulging in similar misinformation in the past too. "In 2016, also they did the same thing. They doctored videos of Kanhaiya Kumar."

The JNUSU President and her associates reiterated that they would go to any extent to continue the agitation albeit peacefully. They accused the JNU Vice Chancellor of behaving like an ABVP president and said that they will not budge on their demand for his removal.

The student leaders remained firm on the demand for removing Vice Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar.

New Delhi, Jan 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Union Minister Smriti Irani on Friday accused the Left of orchestrating the JNU violence.

She took to Twitter and said: "Left design in JNU unmasked. They led mobs of mayhem, destroyed public property paid for by taxpayers, disallowed new students from being enrolled, used the campus as a political battleground. #LeftBehindJNUViolence becomes public knowledge as @DelhiPolice releases evidence."

Earlier she had lashed out at actress Deepika Padukone for standing in solidarity with students who were beaten up. The minister had accused the actress for taking the side of "people who celebrate when CRPF men are killed in Naxal attacks."

Padukone recently went to visit students assaulted in JNU. Violence had broken out in the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on January 5.

New Delhi, 10 Jan (SocialNews.XYZ) Union Minister Smriti Irani has come down hard on Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone for mingling with the pro-Left students lobby at JNU.

Deepika Padukone had visited the JNU campus late on Tuesday and stood in solidarity with JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and others who had been assaulted by masked men who were allegedly ABVP activists.

On Thursday, Smriti Irani speaking at a function in Chennai, questioned Deepika's motives in standing in solidarity with the pro-Left JNUSU leaders and ignoring the ABVP activists who had also complained of being assaulted earlier.

"She knew that she is standing with people who beat other girls at their private parts with lathis who don't see eye to eye with them ideologically," the Minister said.

"She stood next to them, that is her right. I can't deny her that right. She made her political affiliation known in 2011 that she supports the Congress party," the Union Minister declared and went on to add,

"It's her right (to) stand next to people who say Bharat tere tukde honge...It was a shock for people who admired her and watched all her films but did not know (about her political affiliation).

"It was not a shock for me. I think the vibrance of the democracy that we are in depends upon that... we live with so many people who say so many things. We live in a democracy where communists want to come to power through democratic process. It is an oxymoron (sic)."

Deepika has recently produced and acted in 'Chhapaak' a movie based on an acid-attack victim, and has been busy promoting the movie. But after her visit to JNU campus on Tuesday, Deepika has been at the receiving end for siding with anti-BJP elements.

JNU campus has been simmering with tension after a group of masked people attacked several students on campus. The injured were mostly pro-Left student union activists, who have accused the right-wing ABVP.

The ABVP activists have on the other hand, accused pro-Left students of starting the cycle of violence.

By Rohan Agarwal

New Delhi, Jan 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has virtually issued an ultimatum to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar Mamidala to defuse the long standing face-off between the varsity administration that led to a section of students to indulge in violence in the campus on January 5.

The development comes amid growing perception that the VC has failed to communicate the decision of service and utility charges waiver announced by the MHRD in December last year.

The verbal warning came during a recent meeting between the JNU administration and the MHRD officials when the administration informed officials that the Service and Utility charges were actually waived-off for students and were to be paid by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

However the administration had not communicated the point to the students and media effectively which led to the face-off between a section of students and the administration.

A senior official from MHRD had reportedly told the Vice-Chancellor during the said meeting, "If you have made sure that students were to not pay the Service and Utility charges, then why was it not advertised properly?

"The move must have been promoted appropriately to make sure students knew it," highly placed sources in MHRD told IANS.

Amid an outrage by students over a proposed fee hike, the HRD Ministry had intervened last month and formed a three-member committee to resolve the stand-off.

According to the formula decided on December 11th , the utility and service charges were supposed to be borne by the UGC and not the students, who had to only pay the room rent.

The administration of the university was told to follow the formula, and was supposed to not include service and utility charges in the registration process for winter semester.

Although the charges were waived off, the administration had failed to explain the point to the students, leading to tensions on campus.

Following, Thursday afternoon's meeting, the administration issued a circular informing students and media about the waiver.

Mamidala along with the HRD ministry is under huge pressure after veteran BJP leader MM Joshi added his voice to all those asking for the VC's removal following a spate of unprecedented violence at the varsity campus and outside during protests over several issues raised by the students.

New Delhi, Jan 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia on Friday took a dig at BJP for being scared of films, songs and even education, adding it is disgraceful to see people getting intimidated by films based on a social issue.

Sisodia was commenting about various BJP leaders announcing that they will boycott the Deepika Padukone-starrer "Chhapaak", based on the life of the acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, which was released on Friday.

"They are free to not watch any film if they don't want to. Who is stopping them? But they are being scared of a film made on an acid attack victim," he told media.

He said he has not watched the film but will go for sure if he gets time and will also take his children for it.

Sisodia said what kind of a political party is the BJP if they are easily intimidated by and fear certain films that invoke a sense of social responsibilities among people.

"You are scared of films, songs, and even education. what type of party are you?" he asked

He added it is "highly disgraceful" to see people getting intimidated by films based on a social issue.

On Friday, Smriti Irani questioned Deepika's motives in standing in solidarity with the pro-Left JNUSU leaders and ignoring the ABVP activists who had also complained of being assaulted earlier.

"She knew that she is standing with people who beat other girls at their private parts with lathis who don't see eye to eye with them ideologically," the Minister said.

"She stood next to them, that is her right. I can't deny her that right. She made her affiliation known in 2011. It was a shock for people who admired her and watched all her films but did not know (about her political affiliation).

New Delhi, Jan 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) JNU VC Jagadesh Kumar Mamidala on Friday made it clear that the university was ensuring that all decisions taken on December 11 meeting with the MHRD were being "implemented in totality".

Mamidala is under huge pressure after veteran BJP leader MM Joshi added his voice behind all those asking for the VC's removal following a spate of unprecedented violence at the varsity campus and outside during protests over several issues raied by the students.

With the JNU issue spreading across the country like wildfire the VC has now made the administration's stand clear.

It comes following a meeting with Ministry of Human Resource Development Secretary Amit Khare and other top officials.

Mamidala was referring to the decision by the MHRD to wave-off service and utility charges for students that will be paid by the UGC to ensure students do not face heat of hiked hostel charges.

"All decisions taken earlier at HRD Ministry about hostel fee being implemented in totality," the JNU VC Jagadesh Kumar said.

Mamidala further added that if need be the university would extend the registration deadline for students to help them get registered in the new semester.

"Semester registration deadline will be extended further if needed," he added.

Following violence on the campus on January 5, the registration was stopped for three days forcing the administration to extend the registration date till January 12.

"The registration date has been extended to January 12. The university will help every JNU student who wants to register," Mamidala had then tweeted.

Lahore, Jan 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Students in Pakistan on Wednesday expressed solidarity with their counterparts in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who were assaulted violently by masked goons on January 5.

"We stand in solidarity with the students of India who are resisting fascism. Students on both sides have struggled in the face of repression, be it the abduction of students, on campus violence or charges of sedition on raising slogans for their democratic rights," said a statement from the Pakistani Progressive Students Collective.

A group of students representing the students union, elders and others gathered in front of the Lahore Press Club in the Punjab province of Pakistan, carrying placards and chanted slogans over the action against students in India as well as Pakistan.

The placards read: 'Resist, because violence and vandalism of mob exists beyond borders', 'Students united can never be defeated', 'Drop charges from all students'.

'Fascism is as fascism does' read another placard, including several others in Urdu at the protest.

"In the past two months Indian students across the country (Jamia Millia Islamia, JNU, Aligarh Muslim University and others) have fought valiantly against the fascist demagoguery of Modi sarkar," said the Progressive Students Collective's statement.

The students union also mentioned the name of JNU students union president Aishe Ghosh, referring to the January 5 mob attack in JNU.

"Masked men ransacked the JNU campus and hostels. Aishe Ghosh, the president of JNUSU along with several of her comrades was critically injured in this attack," said the Pakistani students union.

It said the call for solidarity from JNU students and alumni has greatly resonated with them, prompting unwavering support for our progressive counterparts in India.

"Therefore, we call on all our members, allies and sympathisers to join hands with the Collective to stand with the students of India and record our protest against the happenings of January 5 at the Lahore Press Club," said the statement.

Revealing complete awareness of the goings on in Indian campuses, he continued to say that, "In the name of rescuing Hindu minorities in Pakistan, the fascist Indian government is actually targeting Dalits, Kashmiris and women in India itself."

The Pakistani student leader said it is important for the citizens of India and Pakistan to join and stay together to fight the communal forces, be it RSS-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

"Unless we stand and fight united against such fascist forces in both the countries, there can be no peace in South Asia or the subcontinent," he said in the video.

"We were partitioned in 1947 for no reason by selfish people and vested interests kept us apart. We belong to the same country, same sky and same earth," he said as 'Inquilab Zindabad' chants rent the air.

Wearing woollen clothing to beat Lahore's cold, the Pakistani students crooned the 'Azadi' song frequently sung on the JNU campus and other Indian universities.

Many girl students also participated in the demonstration in support of Indian students.

India's 'angry young Genie' is unbottled" title="Beware! India's 'angry young Genie' is unbottled" />
BY QUAID NAJMI

Mumbai, Jan 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The turmoil that has gripped the youth and students -- powered mostly by the intelligent but impatient millenials -- inside and outside campuses across the country, is considered unprecedented in the past two decades, and left the powers-that-be rattled right out of a stupor.

The youth's unified angst flaring up at regular intervals from the north, east, west, south has manifested against various contemporary issues that have rocked the country's ruling dispensation in the past few years.

The young, modern-day 'Davids', especially the millenials, feel all this has created a divide of sorts -- psychological, social and political in the country, by the 'Goliaths' symbolizing the current rigid rulers.

Recently, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had prophetically warned that the "country's youth are like a bomb, if you play around with them, they can explode".

"The youth are out because historically, they have always been the first to protest against any kind of social or political injustices... What the young brigade see now is very dismaying, and kindles no hope for their future," Pune's Yuvak Kranti Dal Vice-President Kamlakar Shete told IANS.

Passionate about issues, Shete warned that given the magnitude of the issues confronting the nation, these protests will "only magnify" till the government yields -- "not only an inch, but all the way" -- for a better future for the youth.

A youth leader Chandan Saroj from Wardha said while the government may believe the illiterate masses can be fooled easily, "the youth have seen through their antics and are now wide awake" to fight for the citizens' rights which are sought to be usurped by a handful of individuals in power.

"The youth are educated, they understand, think, analyse the disastrous consequences of government decisions, how the Constitution is being tinkered with and which way the nation is heading... The rulers forget that the youngsters also possess the power to arrest such trends," the soft-spoken Saroj told IANS.

Another firebrand youth leader, Fahad Ahmad, former general secretary of TISS, Mumbai, feels this is "a new movement for Freedom from oppression" of the current government which is attempting to crush all sections of society.

"The youth is feeling uncertain, demoralized, he/she has no clue how the education they get will help them build or secure their future... They are splitting the country on grounds of religion, caste, creed... We are determined -- if they divide the nation, we will unite it," Ahmad told IANS.

Invoking a famous line -- "Darr ko itna mat darao, Ki darr hi mar jayea -- he cautioned that the youth is not 'scared' of anything now.. for, in the past six years, the government has driven wedges between communities, imposed restrictions on what to eat, wear, speak, think, etc. -- the kind of which was not witnessed even during the long and merciless British regime or the brief and harsh Emergency.

"But the youth is united... You assault them in north, east will protest, you terrorise them in west, south will oppose... Our slogans are about 'unity, integrity, amity, harmony' and the government cannot break this unity. We will not be violent, but we will no longer be silent," Ahmad asserted.

About the brutality they face, they proudly refer to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, who was martyred at the age of 21, and many other youngsters in recent decades who sacrificed themselves at a young age to ensure a better future for the rest of the youth and the nation.

They emphasise how students and youth have been at the forefront of every major historical turning point in India, be it the Independence movement, anti-Emergency of 1975, the anti-Mandal Report crusade, the Nirbhaya agitation, or the recent ones opposing Citizenship Amendment Act, and the potent youth always succeeded in bending the ruling might, and globally too.

About the battering the country's image has taken on the world stage, Ahmad says that actually the image of India as a 'vibrant democracy' has been reinforced in recent years as the country's "youth has now fully woken up to the grim realities".

Conceding India has taken a beating in global ratings, Shete refers to the condemnation that abounds on the global social media against the government, worrying investors, tourists, etc., but feels this is "necessary for the larger, long-term national interests".

"Until now, India may have been considered only economically backward, but in the past six years, we have gone politically, socially and intellectually backward, our proud and envied image as a country of 'unity in diversity' has been shattered. The world now knows that India is a strong democracy where anybody who tries to deprive the masses of their rights will be uprooted," Saroj said.

The three enthusiastic leaders are unanimous that despite the harassment and problems they encounter at individual levels, the youth of the country cannot be cowed down.

"The agitated, young Genie is now unbottled But he will work only for the good of the country's youth and future," declared a determined Saroj.

New Jan 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Congress on Thursday accused the Centre of complicity in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) violence and said that even after 72-hours since the incident no culprit has been identified and arrested so far.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said: "The Minister of Human Resource Development and the Home Minister are responsible for the attacks. This is officially sponsored "goondaism" in JNU.

"We demand that those responsible for the violence should be arrested immediately as 72-hours have passed."

The party targeted the JNU Vice-Chancellor again for the series of events in the University.

Jairam Ramesh alleged: "With this VC the campus cannot return to normalcy and government should force him to resign."

Ramesh expressed surprise over the fact that the "Vice-Chancellor was being too powerful and when the HRD secretary had some formula on the JNU, the secretary was removed from the post".

"The party demands that the Vice-Chancellor be removed and students demands met," said Jairam Ramesh.

The Congress fact finding team that visited the JNU campus on Wednesday, will submit its report on Friday to party interim chief Sonia Gandhi. The report will also be discussed during the party's top decision making body, the Congress Working Committee, meeting on Saturday.

The four-member fact finding team was led by former Congress MP and women wing chief Sushmita Dev, and the other three included -- MP Hibi Eden, National Students Union of India's former President Amrita Dhawan, and MP and former JNU Students Union President Syed Nasir Hussain -- visited the university campus on Wednesday afternoon. The team met the students injured in the violence which broke out on the campus on Sunday.

New Delhi, Jan 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) A day after the Congress fact finding team visited Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, the four-member team will submit its report to party interim chief Sonia Gandhi. The report will also be discussed during the party's top decision making body CWC meeting on Friday.

The four-member fact finding team led by former Congress MP and women's wing chief Sushmita Dev, and three student leaders - MP Hibi Eden, student wing National Students Union of India's former President Amrita Dhawan and MP and former JNU Students Union President Syed Nasir Hussain visited the varsity campus on Wednesday afternoon and met the students in the campus over the violence on Sunday, which left about two dozen students injured.

According to party sources, the report of the fact finding team will highlight the role of Vice Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar, role of Delhi Police, role of insiders in helping masked mobs to enter the campus and role of some professors of the varsity.

They said that the report of the fact finding committee will also be discussed during the Congress Working Committee (CWC). The Congress interim President has already condemned the violence in the JNU campus on Sunday.

In her statement Sonia Gandhi had demanded a judicial inquiry into the JNU violence.

"The entire Congress party stands in solidarity with India's youth and students. We strongly deprecate the sponsored violence in JNU and demand an independent judicial inquiry. The voice of India's youth and students is being muzzled everyday. The horrifying and unprecedented violence unleashed on India's young by goons with active abetment of the ruling Modi government is deplorable and unacceptable," the statement said.

Sonia Gandhi alleged that everyday campuses and colleges are raided across India, either by the police or by "lumpen elements" with support of the BJP government.

New Delhi, Jan 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The JNU administration has set up a five-member committee to inquire into the violent incidents on January 5 on the campus. The move comes in the wake of JNUSU leaders accusing the varsity administration of bias towards right-wing student organisations like the ABVP.

Beleaguered JNU Vice Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar constituted the committee on January 7. The committee comprising of Professors Sushant Mishra, Mazar Asif, Sudheer Pratap Singh, Santosh Shukla and Bhaswati Das, has been asked to submit its report at the earliest.

The university's chief security officer has been tasked with coordinating and assisting the probe team.

JNU has been tense since January 5, after groups of masked miscreants descended on the Sabarmati hostel on campus and assaulted students and some faculty members. The pro-Left students and right-wing ABVP have been blaming each other for the violence.

Mumbai, Jan 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Days after Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone stepped out in solidarity with the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, actor Varun Dhawan said he, too, cannot stay neutral on the issue.

According to dnaindia.com, Varun, who is currently promoting his upcoming film "Street Dancer 3D", told media in Madhya Pradesh: "I think we cannot stay neutral in such issues. You have to condemn such attacks."

He added: "It is dangerous and sad if masked people enter an educational institution and all this (assault, vandalism) happens."

Asked about the reaction to Deepika's visit to JNU on Twitter, he said: "I am not going to get into what people are saying on Twitter on this issue."

Varun is sure that the law enforcement will find the person guilty soon.

"But the police will investigate it. As an Indian, I have full faith in the police and judiciary. I hope those involved in this incident get severe punishment as soon as possible," he said.

On January 5, several masked individuals thrashed students and teachers inside the campus here with wooden and metal rods on Sunday.

At least 20 students were admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences with severe injuries, including the Students Union President Aishe Ghosh, who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod.
