Outgoing Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das loses seat

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Outgoing Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das was on Monday defeated in his bastion, Jamshedpur East, by his Independent rival and former cabinet colleague Saryu Roy by a margin of 15,833 votes.

Das, who had held the seat since 1995 when it was in undivided Bihar, secured 58,112 votes while Roy got 73,945 of the total 173,618 votes.

Congress candidate Gourav Vallabh came third with 18,976 votes.

Das, who had mostly been trailing in the seat since the counting of votes in the five phase Assembly election began on Monday morning, had also asserted the party would return to power even as early trends showed the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal maintaining a good lead.

The alliance eventually won 47 seats in the 81-member house, while the BJP was reduced to 25 seats, against the 37 it won in 2014.

Former Minister Roy, whose efforts put two former Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad and Madhu Koda in jail for corruption, had given a tough fight to Das, in an unprecedented trend which was not expected by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that had put on hold Roy's ticket from Jamshedpur West, leading him to resign from the Ministry and Assembly and confront Das.

A two-time legislator from Jamshedpur West, Roy had, on November 17, quit the Cabinet in which he had held the Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs portfolios and announced his separation from the BJP.

The next day, he filed his nomination as an Independent candidate from Jamshedpur East seat.

Expelled from the BJP for six years for contesting as an Independent, Roy had alleged that he was denied ticket at the behest of Das and had decided to fight from Jamshedpur East in retaliation.

The Jamshedpur East constituency covers one of the two parts of the 'Steel City', a planned industrial town established by Tata Group's founder Jamsetji Tata. The town's economy largely runs on the steel plant and allied activities.

Jharkhand results mandate against BJP’s divisiveness: Cong

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Congress, upbeat as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress-Rashtriya Janta Dal alliance secured victory in Jharkhand on Monday, termed the results a rejection of BJP's "anti-people" and "anti-constitutional" policies.

Congress General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal said the results of the Jharkhand Assembly election are "a substantive and clear mandate against the divisive and disruptive political actions of (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and the BJP".

"The people of Jharkhand have rejected the anti-people and anti-constitutional policies of the BJP. Instead of talking about the development in respective states or issues of common people, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to fool the people by their narrow minded divisive political actions and sectarian agenda," he said, in a release.

Venugopal insisted that the people of Jharkhand have given a befitting reply to the BJP.

"The victory in Jharkhand will give more power to the Congress party to fight against the anti-constitutional and anti-people policies of the BJP," he added.

Maha Vikas Aghadi relishes BJP’s rout in Jharkhand

Mumbai, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra, here on Monday, hailed the Jharkhand poll verdict in which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost power to the Congress-JMM-RJD combine.

The Shiv Sena targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah for their party's debacle and said now the BJP needed to 'introspect'.

"Modi and Shah deployed all their might in Jharkhanda yet the state slipped out of their hands. Soon after Maharashtra, they have been defeated in Jharkhand. They need some introspection," said Sena MP Sanjay Raut.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar termed it as the "defeat of the BJP's arrogance." "The Jharkhand Assembly poll results show that the people have lost faith the BJP. The Jharkhand voters have rejected the BJP's arrogant tactics of using money-power through its government at the Centre," Pawar said.

He said with Jharkhand the BJP had lost in a year five states -- Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

"This has boosted the confidence of people in other states. Wherever there is an opportunity, the people will make it (BJP) bite the dust. The BJP downslide has begun and nobody can arrest it," Pawar asserted.

Balasaheb Thorat, Congress state chief and Revenue Minister, said the BJP's "anti-people policies" led to the Jharkhand drubbing. "The BJP's attempts to exploit issues like their so-called nationalism by scrapping Article 370, the CAA-NRC and others have been outright rejected by the Jharkhand voters," said Thorat.

He said Jharkhand was a BJP bastion and it was ruling the state since its formation. "For the first time, the BJP has lost the state and the Congress alliance will form the government due to the BJP's anti-people policies," he said.

Samajwadi Party state chief Abu Asim Azmi said the Jharkhand voters had "consciously rejected" the BJP brand of patriotism in the name of Article 370, the CAA-NRC, attempt to create a "communal chasm" among the people.

Hemant Soren wins from both Jharkhand seats

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The JMM-Congress-RJD combine's Chief Ministerial candidate Hemant Soren on Monday won both the assembly seats he contested in the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections.

Soren defeated Jharkhand Welfare Minister Lois Marandi in Dumka seat, securing 80,589 votes against his BJP rival's 67,571 votes of the total counted 165,033 votes.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief, who was first elected to the state Assembly from Dumka in 2005, had lost the seat in the 2014 assembly poll.

Soren also retained the Barhait assembly seat, defeating BJP candidate Simon Malto by over 25,000 votes. Soren got 73,534 votes and Malto got 47,939 votes.

Soren first came to limelight in 2004 when his father and then Coal Minister Shibu Soren was facing an arrest warrant in a three-decade-old case. The elder Soren had to resign as minister but Hemant Soren fought the legal battle and ensured acquittal of his father.

Becoming Deputy Chief Minister in the Arjun Munda-led BJP government in 2010, he pulled it down in January 2013. He himself became Chief Minister on July 2013 and held power of the state till his party's defeat in the 2014 Assembly elections.

Raghubar Das resigns as Jharkhand CM

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Incumbent Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, facing imminent defeat in Jamshedpur East, has resigned from his post.

He handed over his resignation to Governor Draupadi Murmu at Raj Bhavan on Monday evening.

Das, a non-tribal leader of a tribal-dominated state, is staring at a shocking defeat at the hands of his former cabinet colleague and Independent candidate Saryu Roy who is giving him a tough fight for the Jamshedpur East seat. Das is trailing by over 15,000 votes. As of now, Roy got 73,332 votes whereas Das is trailing behind with 57,607 votes.

Das has been winning this seat since 1995.

The Jamshedpur East constituency is a key constituency in the 81-member Assembly which went to the polls in five phases from November 30 to December 20.

Jharkahnd Assembly Speaker Dinesh Oraon lost the Sisai assembly seat by nearly 30,000 votes. Oraon secured 45,592 votes and his rival JMM candidate Jiga Susaran Horo got 75,446 votes.

Jharkhand Labour Minister Raj Paliwar is trailing by over 10,000 votes in Madhupur constituency.

The other ministers who are trailing include Education Minister Neera Yadav, Ram Chandra Sahis of AJSU, Welfare Minister Loius Marandi. Urban Development Minister C.P. Singh won by margin of 3000 votes.

The counting of votes began at 8 a.m. on Monday. The 'Steel City' Jamshedpur constituency covers one of the two parts of Jamshedpur, a planned industrial town established by Tata Group's founder Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata.

BJP lost Jharkhand to Das’s unpopularity, Munda’s absence

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Arjun Munda is the tallest Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tribal leader, who many claim, Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das was insecure of. No wonder, Das, a non-tribal Chief Minister of a largely tribal-majority state, tried his best to keep Munda away from state politics, which surely have contributed to the BJP's loss of mandate as well as face in this elections in the state.

Das was not only a non-tribal, failed to gauge tribals' beliefs and aspirations, but also earned fair amount of unpopularity. "Das was so unpopular that even Munda couldn't have bailed him out", reasoned a BJP National Secretary after the poll results started tricking in painting a bleak picture for the party.

During Das's rule, the 'Pathalgadi movement', which considers the tribal region of Jharkhand an independent 'nation', gathered momentum due to poor communication from the state government. The non-tribal Chief Minister's diminishing authority and that the Scheduled Tribes accounted for 26 per cent of the state's population worsened the situation for the party.

Last year, when stone plaques and signages sprung across villages in the Khunti, Gumla, Simdega and West Singhbhum districts, and the tribals didn't allow "outsiders" to enter the area that they considered as a "liberated" zone.

It all revived in November 2016, when the Jharkhand Assembly passed two amendments allowing acquisition of tribal land for development projects. By 2018, the protest had turned violent with abduction of security force personnel.

It called for acknowledgement of the tribal sensitivities and honest engagement with them. But Das decided to crack down on the movement.

A sane political interventions by BJP leaders, like Munda who continues to have substantial hold in the area, could have saved the day for the BJP. Despite this awful turn of event, Munda won the Khunti Lok Sabha seat in May 2019, though with lower margin.

"Das was neither acceptable to people, nor the state unit," said a state BJP leader.

Interestingly, the central BJP leadership knew of it but didn't act. However, the BJP's understanding of the ground situation reflected in printing of the party manifesto, which didn't carry Das's photograph on the first page. Instead, it had Arjun Munda's picture.

Also, there was a reason when "Ghar ghar Raghubar" slogan was changed by the BJP. But a sulking Munda, who was licking his wounds received in 2014 polls, has turned out to be the major factor behind the BJP's failure to attain the "65 Par" dream and shrinking to around 30 seats in this elections.

Tribal sentiments against non-tribal CM cost BJP Jharkhand

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to have paid the price for experimenting with a non-tribal as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, where tribals have a sizable population.

Jharkhand was created in November 2000 for the welfare of the people of the region, particularly tribals who constitute around 27 per cent of the state's population. Respecting the tribal population's sentiment, the BJP named Babulal Marandi, a tribal, as the first Chief Minister.

Marandi was later replaced by another tribal leader Arjun Munda.

But after getting a majority in alliance with the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) in 2014, the BJP elevated Raghubar Das as the first non-tribal Chief Minister.

Das hurt the tribal sentiments by amending land laws -- the Santhal Pargana Tenancy (SPT) Act and the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT) -- in 2016. The amendment was passed in the Assembly without discussion amid the opposition uproar.

Several memorandums were submitted to the Governor urging him not to accede the amendments. The amendments proposed to acquire land for development projects.

Both laws had been formulated to protect the tribals' lands. Jharkhand witnessed state-wide protests over the issue. Das took all steps to suppress the movement. The protesters were denied buses and the police were instructed to stop them from entering Ranchi.

The entire opposition, particularly the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), protested inside and outside the Assembly against the amendments.

At the Assembly poll campaign, the JMM-Congress-RJD combine's chief ministerial candidate Hemant Soren, himself a tribal, assured to protect water, forest and land (jal, jungle and jameen) rights of the tribals.

Even former Congress president Rahul Gandhi promised to protect them.

The tribals -- there are nine tribes in the state -- worship the nature and are emotionally attached with their culture, tradition and forest.

The tribals have been demanding the Sarna code to protect their culture and the population. The JMM has promised to protect the land, culture and tradition of tribals, but will it bring the Sarna code is to be seen.

Hemant Soren's father JMM president Shibu Soren had once fought for the rights of the tribal people in the Santhal Pargna region against the money lenders. He used to be a terror among outsiders and moneylenders and went to jail several times for the cause of tribals.

‘Jinx’ on Jharkhand CM’s post seems unbroken in 2019 too

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The results in the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly election on Monday again proved that the state Chief Minister's post is still "jinxed" with none of its holders managing to get a second consecutive term even as incumbent Raghubar Das was trailing in his own stronghold even as his BJP was swept out of the power.

However, Das has earned the distinction of becoming the first Chief Minister of the tribal state, carved out of Bihar in 2000, to complete a full term in power, but in 2019, anti-incumbency, rural distress, resentment over lack of jobs and even a divide within over the choice of poll candidates cost him dear.

Since its inception, Jharkhand has seen 10 Chief Ministers and three terms of President's rule.

Babulal Marandi, of the Bharatiya Janata Party, became the first Chief Minister on November 15, 2000, but only was in power till March 18, 2003.

The party's Arjun Munda, who succeeded him, was in power till March 2, 2005. After the 2005 elections, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder Shibu Soren occupied the Chief Minister's chair from March 2 to March 12, 2005 before Munda returned to the post.

However, he was only in power till September 19, 2006, when his government fell, and Independent MLA Madhu Koda became Chief Minister. Koda served till August 27, 2008, before Soren returned as Chief Minister on August 27, 2008 but only served till January 19, 2009, and then President's Rule was imposed.

Soren returned as Chief Minister on December 30, 2009 but was only in power till June 1, 2010, before President's Rule was again imposed.

Munda returned as Chief Minister on September 11, 2010 but his third stint was only till January 18, 2013 before President's rule was again imposed.

JMM's Hemant Soren, the current CM candidate of grand JMM-Congress-RJD alliance, became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand on July 13, 2013 but demitted office on December 28, 2014 after the defeat in the Assembly elections.

Das then became the first non-tribal Chief Minister of the tribal state.

But, in 2019, his own electoral foray seemed doomed.

Even as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) alliance swept to a comfortable majority as the BJP lost over 10 seats, Das was trailing in Jamshedpur East seat which he held since 1995 - even while it was part of Bihar.

Till, 8 p.m., Das, who was seeking the sixth consecutive term from his Jamshedpur East seat, was trailing by over 15,000 votes against his former Cabinet colleague and BJP's rebel Saryu Roy who secured 68,098 votes.

The counting of votes for 81 Jharkhand Assembly seats, which went to polls in five phases from November 30 to December 20, began at 8 a.m. on Monday.

Regional parties emerge main hurdle in BJP’s power march

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) With Jharkhand, the second state after Maharashtra, slipping out of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) hands within two months, it sends across the political message that the regional parties are holding against the BJP.

The results, so far, indicate that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal combine is well settled in the state.

On the Congress playing second fiddle to the JMM, a regional party, said a senior party leader that for stopping the BJP in its tracks the Congress decided to back the regional parties and anchor the alliance.

While few leaders said the party had to learn from the Karnataka episode where supporting the Janata Dal (Secular) back-fired and the government fell because of the rebellion in the party.

The Congress is re-adopting pre-2004 political strategy, when the party knit alliances with small parties and reached the position to dare and defeat the NDA led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2004 Lok Sabha polls.

While the India's political map for the BJP is shrinking, with the regional parties playing a real spoiler for it, the Congress is trying to fish in this political waters.

While the Congress is set to go with the RJD in Bihar, the real challenge will be West Bengal where the BJP has emerged the main challenger to the TMC. It may have to choose between the TMC and the Left next year.

However, just round the corner is the Delhi Assembly elections, where the Congress may try to remove the zero tag that it gained after ruling the state for many years.

Alliances Cong mantra to power in Jharkhand

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) With leads and trends for the Jharkhand assembly election results on Monday showing the BJP on the back foot, it appears that the Congress is set to score one more point in the fight between the two national parties for power in state assembly elections.

After unexpectedly tasting power in Maharashtra, the Congress appears to prefer piggybacking on regional players to power its way to government in state elections. Its strategy seems to have paid dividends if the Jharkhand assembly election results are any indication.

In Jharkhand, the Congress had stitched up a pre-poll alliance where it made way for regional party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to take the lead. While the JMM got to contest 43 seats, the Congress contented itself with 31 seats and the RJD was allotted 7 seats.

"There is no-doubt about it, Hemant Soren will be the CM. We have assured him (Soren) even before we forged the alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)," R.P.N. Singh, Congress in-charge Jharkhand, told the media in Ranchi on Monday.

The Congress has recently formed the government in Maharashtra, as the third member of a three party post-poll alliance in which the Shiv Sena and NCP call the shots. Earlier, in Karnataka too, the Congress had formed government with the Janata Dal (S).

The JMM/Cong/ RJD alliance is set to comfortably cross the halfway mark in the 81-seat Jharkhand Assembly. The five-phase assembly elections in Jharkhand began on November 20 and ended on December 20.

JMM-Cong-RJD alliance set to form next govt in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The JMM-Congress-RJD combine is heading for a clear mandate in the Jharkahnd Assembly polls and is set to form the new government, as per the latest Election Commission counting trends.

Of the most prestigious of the contests, Chief Minister Raghubar Das is trailing rebel BJP candidate Saryu Rai in the Jamshedpur East seat by over 1,000 votes.

As per the votes counted so far, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) together have won or leading in 45 constituencies out of the 81 seats.

The JMM and the Congress have won three seats each and were leading in 26 and 12 seats, respectively. The is RJD leading in one seat.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won three seats and is leading in 23. The All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) has won one seats and is leading in two. The Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) is leading in three seats.

AJSU chief Sudesh Mahto has won the Silli seat by 20,000 plus votes. JVM-P chief Babulal Marandi is leading by 15,000 votes in the Dhanwar seat.

Jharkahnd Urban Development Minister C.P. Singh has retained the Ranchi seat by 3,000 votes. Speaker Dinesh Oraon, Labour Minister Raj Paliwar, Education Minister Neera Yadav many other stalwarts and trailing.

The JMM-Cong-RJD alliance chief ministerial candidate Hemant Soren (JMM chief) is leading in both Dumka and Barhet seats.

Talking to the media after it became clear that the BJP has lost the elections, Hemant Soren dedicated his victory to the people of the state and also thanked alliance partners for reposing faith in him.

"I thank Guruji (father Shibu Soren), Laluji and Soniaji, Rahulji, Priyankaji and all those leaders who reposed their faith and trust in me," Soren said.

Stating that a new chapter has been opened, he said it would be a milestone for the state. All the promises made to the people would be fulfilled, he added. "We will sit with the alliance partners and decide the next course of action," Soren said.

According to the Election Commission data, the BJP has secured 33.53 per cent vote, the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance 36 per cent. Of this, the JMM, the Congress and the RJD have received 19.29 per cent, 13.78 per cent and 2.82 per cent votes, respectively.

The AJSU has garnered 8.15 per cent and the AIMIM led by Assudin Owaisi 1.08 per cent votes.

The elections took place in five phases between November 30 and December 20.

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Monday took the full responsibility of BJP's humiliating defeat in the Jharkhand Assembly polls.

The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance are projected to form the government in the state.

Das said: "This will be my defeat, not the Bharatiya Janata Party's."

Das said he respected the mandate even as the counting of votes in the 81 seats of the Assembly was underway. The JMM-Congress-RJD was leading in 46 seats, while the BJP was ahead in 25.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was seen leading in 30 seats around 6 p.m. -- becoming the largest single party in the state.

Das said after the mandate received in the last elections in 2014, he had tried his best to carry out development in the state and served the people with complete dedication.

According to the trends at 6 p.m., Raghubar Das is trailing in his constituency Jamshedpur (East). But he said he was certain of his victory as many rounds of counting still remained.

AJSU chief Sudesh Mahto wins from Silli

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Former Deputy Chief Minister and All Jharkhand Students Union Party (AJSU) President Sudesh Kumar Mahto won the Silli assembly seat by 20,000 votes.

Mahto defeated JMM candidate Seema Devi by nearly 20,000 votes. Mahtao secured 81,533 votes and Seema Devi managed to get 61,544 votes. Mahto's party is leading in three seats, including Silli.

Incumbent Seema Devi won the seat in 2018 after her husband and then sitting MLA Amit Mahto faced disqualification from the Jharkhand Assembly following his conviction in a criminal case by a Ranchi court.

The 40-year-old MLA was awarded two years' imprisonment in the case. Amit was held guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in a 12-year-old case pertaining to the assault on former Sonahatu circle officer Alok Kumar.

Sudesh had lost to Amit in 2014 Assembly polls and the subsequent by-election to JMM candidates Amit Mahto and his wife Seema Mahto, respectively. Sudesh Mahto held the fort since 2000, but lost to Amit Mahto in 2014 Assembly polls by 29,740 votes.

The BJP had not fielded its candidate in Silli as the AJSU was their alliance partner. But this time, both the parties are fighting on their own due to differences.

The Congress, too, had not fielded any candidate from the constituency as they have an alliance with the JMM.

A total of 15 candidates, including four independents, contested the election from the seat.

Silli is part of the Ranchi Lok Sabha constituency.

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Incumbent Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das has been facing a tough fight against his former cabinet colleague and Independent candidate Saryu Roy in Jamshedpur East constituency. Das is trailing by over 8,000 votes from his nearest rival Roy.

Das has been winning this seat since 1995.

Das, a non-tribal leader of a tribal-dominated state, is staring at a shock defeat at the hands of his rival Saryu Roy who is giving him a tough fight on Jamshedpur East seat and has got past him by a margin of over 8000 votes.

The Jamshedpur East constituency is a key constituency in the 81-member Assembly which went to polls in five phases from November 30 to December 20.

Jharkahnd Assembly Speaker Dinesh Oraon has lost the Sisai assembly seat by nearly 30,000 votes. Oraon secured 45,592 votes and his rival JMM candidate Jiga Susaran Horo got 75446 votes.

Jharkhand labour Minister Raj Paliwar is trailing by over 10,000 votes in Madhupur seat.

The other Ministers who are trailing include Education Minister Neera Yadav, Ram Chandra Sahis of AJSU, Welafre Minister Loius Marandi and Urban Development Minister C.P. Singh.

Congress hijacks BJP’s ‘sabka saath’ slogan in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) With the Grand Alliance comprising it, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) heading for a clear majority in 81-member Jharkhand assembly, the Congress seems to have hijacked the BJP's slogan of 'sabka saath' with a top party leader saying they will take all parties together, even after forming the government.

As per the trends, the Grand Alliance was leading around 45 seats while the ruling BJP was leading on 27 seats in the mineral-rich, eastern state.

Speaking to reporters here, Congress state in charge R.P.N. Singh said: "Whatever is the outcome of the election, even if we form a government on our own, we will seek the support of other parties (except for BJP)."

He was respopnding to a question on if the poll verdict throws up a hung assembly in the state.

The BJP had raised the slogan of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' and 'Sabka Vishwas' ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

However, while on the opposition side, Congress' old ally the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) of former Chief Minister and BJP leader Babulal Marandi contested alone, so did the BJP's ally - the Sudesh Mahto-led All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU).

Singh's homework, strategy and planning in the Jharkhand Assembly polls seems to have created a new chapter for the Congress in the tribal state. Inviting all the parties under its umbrella seems to be the Congress' new strategy to include all parties in a bid to counter the saffron surge.

The Congress had forged an pre-poll alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra, but after the Shiv Sena opted out of the NDA in the state, the Congress and the NCP forged Maha Vikas Aghadi Maharashtra with it and formed the government.

Singh also reiterated that JMM leader Hemant Soren would be the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

"There is no doubt about it. Hemant Soren will be the CM. We have assured him (Soren) even before we forged the alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)," the Congress leader said.

On the impact of the ongoing countrywide protests against the NRC and CAA on the polls, Singh said that they affected the final two of the five phase election.

"PM (Narendra) Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and UP's CM Yogi (Adityanath) tried to raise the temperature (of the polls) by taking their campaign to a new low. It would be interesting to see what is the final outcome of seats where polls were held in the last two phase," the former Minister in the UPA government added

On the message coming out of the election results in Jharkhand, Singh said that the message is loud and clear that BJP is not bothered about growing unemployment, farmers distress and a countrywide economic slowdown.

"The Prime Minister never acknowledges there is an economic slowdown. The BJP, as a party, does not talk about corruption or related issues. I think these are the issues the BJP has to take note of or else they will continue to lose," he said.

BJP rebel Saryu Roy on verge of defeating Jharkhand CM Das

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Rebel BJP leader and former Jharkhand Minister Saryu Roy, whose efforts put two former Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad and Madhu Koda in jail for corruption, is leading by with nearly 9,000 votes against incumbent Chief Minister Raghubar Das in his bastion Jamshedpur East seat.

Roy, who contested as an Independent, is giving a tough fight to Das, securing 41, 214 votes against Das (32,796) - as at 5 p.m. - in an unprecedented trend which was not expected by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that had put on hold Roy's ticket from Jamshedpur West, leading him to resign from the Ministry and Assembly and confront Das.

The next day, he filed his nomination as an Independent candidate from Jamshedpur East seat which Das has held from 1995 - even before since the state's first election in 2005 after it was carved out of Bihar in 2000.

Expelled from the BJP for six years for contesting as an Independent, Roy had alleged that he was denied ticket at the behest of Das and had decided to fight from Jamshedpur East in retaliation.

Roy, one of the petitioners demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the fodder scam in Bihar in the 1990s, had also filed cases in the court against Jharkhand government decisions and was vocal about corruption in the state, which has been ruled by the BJP for 14 of its 19 years of existenced.

Associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since 1962 when he was Class 8 student and was known to be close to former RSS Pracharak Govindacharya, he has friends across party lines.

While his "friendship" with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is well known, less known is the role he had played in making Lalu Prasad the Chief Minister in 1989-90 when they were all on the same side.

Roy is also known to be close to West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra.

Das had won Jamshedpur East in the 2014 Assembly elections by nearly 70,000 votes, with a JMM candidate finishing up as the runner-up in 2014. There were a a total of 20 candidates, including nine Independents, in the fray.

The first Jharkhand Chief Minister to complete five years in office, Das faced anti-incumbency, rural distress, resentment over lack of jobs and even a divide within the party over the choice of poll candidates, but was since morning expressing confidence that the BJP would return to power.

Elections to the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly were held in five phases from November 30 to December 20. The counting of votes began at 8 a.m. on Monday.

BJP’s Aparna Sengupta makes a mark in Left bastion Nirsa

Dhanbad, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Bharatiya Janata Party's Aparna Sengupta took a lead in the Left bastion Nirsa in Jharkhand assembly by 15,429 votes over Marxist Coordination Committee's Arup Chatterjee.

Chatterjee, a senior party leader, had won the 2014 assembly election from Nirsa, known as the coal belt of India, by only 1,035 votes. The Nirsa assembly constituency in Dhanbad is considered an MCC stronghold, where the party has never lost since 1990, except once in 2004.

The veteran leader late Gurudas Chatterjee won continuously from 1990 before being assassinated in the year 2000. Since then, his son Arup Chatterjee has represented the seat.

Only in the 2004 assembly election did Arup lose to Forward Bloc candidate Aparna Sengupta, wife of slain All India Forward Bloc leader Sushanta Sengupta.

Aparna in 2015 left All India Forward Bloc to join the BJP. Before her, Binay Singh was the BJP face in Nirsa and had been working for the party for two decades.

Hemant Soren cycles to parents’ house to seek blessings

Hemant, wearing jeans and a coat, took a clycle ride to reach his father's residence.

The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance is leading in 46 seats. The state has 81-member Assembly elections for which were held in five phases.

Hemant's father and JMM chief Shibu Soren's residence is located at Morabadi ground in the city.

Hemant Soren is leading from Dumka and Barhait assembly seats. He is leading over 12,000 votes in Barhait and more than 700 votes in Dumka.

He is likely to become Chief Minister for a second time.

New Delhi, 23 Dec (SocialNews.XYZ) With the assembly election results showing a clear victory for the JMM-led alliance, it is evident that Hemant Soren is poised to become the next chief minister of Jharkhand. He will be donning the chief minister's mantle for the second time in his political career.

The 2019 assembly elections were a straightforward proposition for Soren who was in a way fighting for his survival and that of his political party. While the exit polls had predicted the possibility of a hung assembly, Soren managed to swing voters towards the JMM, especially in the tribal belt.

To its credit, the Congress smelt an opportunity in Jharkhand and backed the JMM president to the hilt and sat back, while he led from the front. The party's Jharkhand in charge R.P.N Singh said in Ranchi on Friday that Hemant Soren was the first and final choice of chief minister for the alliance right from the initial stages itself.

"There is no-doubt about it. Hemant Soren will be the Chief Minister. We have assured him (Soren) even before we forged the alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)," R.P.N. Singh, Congress in-charge Jharkhand told the media.

Tying up with the Congress helped garner minority votes in the JMM's favour and also added to the mahagathbandhan's overall tally in Jharkhand assembly. The son of Shibu Soren, founder of the JMM, Hemant got down to brass tacks and didn't allow the BJP's campaign to sidetrack his agenda of local issues.

The efforts have paid off handsomely and Hemant Soren is the man of the moment on Jharkhand's date with democracy. Hemant's father Shibu Soren had also served thrice as the state's chief minister - once barely for ten days.

Jailed Lalu Prasad beat BJP in Jharkhand from hospital bed

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) His political career has been written off by many but RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, currently jailed in a fodder scam case in the Birsa Munda jail here, again proved his prowess by accomplishing the BJP's defeat in Jharkhand by preserving the opposition alliance comprising his party, the JMM and the Congress.

According to a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, Lalu Prasad, currently admitted to the Ranchi Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), proved a boon for the Grand Alliance in the state, where it is currently leading in over 45 out of the 81 seats.

Ahead of the assembly polls, when the Congress, the RJD and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) were in talks to finalise seat-sharing in the mineral-rich eastern state, the RJD chief, who on a number of occasions has been kingmaker in Bihar and at the Centre, convinced his son and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav to accept the formula.

A RJD leader, who did not wish to be named, said Tejashwi Yadav wanted to contest in more seats of his choice.

"Following his demands, Tejashwi also did not participate in a joint press conference in Ranchi despite being present in the state capital," the party leader said, adding that after the RJD leader's absence, questions were being raised on the future of Grand Alliance in the state.

"However, Laluji, who was then admitted in RIMS, then convinced Tajaswi to hold talks with (JMM chief) Hemant Soren and the Congress leaders.

"Laluji knew that if Tejashwi remained adamant on his demands, then the opposition will break ahead of the assembly polls and will pave the way for the BJP to win easily," the RJD leader said.

Speaking to IANS over phone, senior RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said: "It was the experience of Laluji that saved the alliance in the state ahead of the polls. And Laluji's experience in Jharkhand also helped the Grand Alliance to defeat the arrogant BJP in Jharkhand."

He said that Lalu Prasad's intervention at "perfect time" helped to bring the anti-BJP parties together in the state as he convinced Tejashwi Yadav to agree to the seven seats allotted to the RJD.

The JMM and Congress contested on 43 and 31 seats, respectively.

Jharkhand voted in five phases from November 30 to December 20 and the results are being counted on Monday.

JMM emerges single largest party with 29 leads

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Leaving the BJP behind, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has emerged as the single largest party in the assembly elections in the state, with 29 leads so far.

Its nearest competitor, the Bharatiya Janata Party, has got 24 leads. Along with Congress' 14 leads and Rashtriya Janata Dal's 3, the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance is now leading in as many as 46 seats, which is past the majority mark of 42.

The 29 seats in which the JMM is leading include Baharagora, Barhait (from where Hemant Soren is contesting), Bishunpur, Borio, Chaibasa, Chakradharpur, Dumka and Dumri.

Dumka is the second constituency where Soren has contested and is leading with 2,750 votes.

The JMM has a projected vote share of 19.2% of the total votes.

Raghubar Das’ style of working proved costly for BJP

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The perceived dissatisfaction with the style of functioning of Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das and his bid to copy Lalu Prasad in running the government apparently led to BJP's defeat in Jharkhand.

Das, though, has many records to his credit; one of them is that he was the first non-tribal Chief Minister who survived full tenure of five years. In a state which has witnessed eight Chief Ministers after its formation in 2000, Das's completition of the full five-year tenure (2014 to 2019) was credititable.

After taking the charge, Das sidelined all state level leaders. He first sidelined BJP's tribal face Arjun Munda. During 2019 Assembly ticket distribution, he denied tickets to all Munda loyalists. At least 11 sitting legislators were denied tickets. All these legislators were either Munda loyalists or had not had good relations with Das.

Beside sidelining leaders within his party, Raghubar Das is also responsible for sidelining the alliance partner, All Jharkhand Students Union's (AJSU) president Sudesh Mahto. During five years of Raghubar Das government, Sudesh Mahto played the role of opposition despite being a part of the government.

The BJP-AJSU tie-up could not materialize only because of the arrogance of Das, his detractors within and outside the BJP said.

Sources in AJSU say that party wanted common agenda for the polls. AJSU, besides seeking a larger role in the alliance, wanted a new chief ministerial face. The central BJP did not accept AJSU's conditions. AJSU was unhappy as it was not taken into confidence on important issues such as amending the land laws and bringing the domicile policy.

Das government's move to amend the two acts -- Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT) and the Santhal Pargana Act -- did not go down well among the tribal people of the state. When various organisations called for protests in Ranchi, Das allegedly allowed use of force to quell the agitation. The protesters were denied buses which were stopped outside Ranchi.

Government sources said Das's functioning also left many government officials demoralized. He used to lose his temper on officials and party workers and media personnel as well. Some of his Jansamvad (public interaction) programmes became known for his haughtiness.

His detractors said Das only tried to imitate RJD chief Lalu Prasad while dealing with officials. The people's grievances were not addressed while officials were humiliated, they said.

"His short temper coupled with his scathing remarks made against party workers caused major resentment within the party. He sidelined trusted party workers, allowing his advisors to call the shots. The issues related to party workers and leaders were never heard properly. We were not given time to meet Das," said a BJP leader.

Saryu Rai, who was a cabinet minister, did not enjoy good relations with him either. Roy left Parliamentary Affairs Ministry and made it known that he would not sit alongside Das even inside the House. When Rai's ticket was put on hold, he rebelled and fought against the Chief Minister.

More than 70,000 para teachers demanding regularisation of their service were treated badly. In 2018, on formation day of Jharkhand in November, they were beaten up by police. More than 25,000 Aganwadi workers demanding a raise in their wages were also not treated well.

Saryu Roy, however, is giving him a tough fight in this seat and has actually edged past Das by a margin of over 4,000 votes. Of the total 53,144 votes counted so far, Das and Roy managed to get 18,874 and 23,517 votes, respectively.

Jamshedpur East is a key constituency in the 81-member Assembly polling for which was held in five phases from November 30 to December 20.

Jharkahnd assembly Speaker Dinesh Oraon is trailing in Sisai assembly seat over 14,000 votes. Oraon has secured 28,403 votes and his rival JMM candiate Jiga Susaran Horo has got 49,024 votes. State Labour Minister Raj Paliwar is trailing over 10,000 votes in the Madhupur seat.

The town's economy largely runs on the steel plant and allied activities.

Jharkhand's only Chief Minister to complete a five-year tenure, Das is fighting to retain a seat he has held since the state's first election in 2005 after it was carved out of Bihar in the year 2000.

Das is trailing by over 4,000 votes against his nearest rival Roy. Das has been winning this seat since 1995.

Das, a non-tribal leader of a tribal-dominated state, is leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s campaign to retain power. However, Roy is giving him a tough fight on this seat and has actually edged past him by a margin of over 4,000 votes.

The latest trend showed Roy securing 23,517 votes against Das with 18,874 votes from Jamshedpur East, a key constituency in the 81-member Assembly which went to polls in five phases from November 30 to December 20.

The counting of votes began at 8 a.m. on Monday. The 'Steel City' Jamshedpur constituency covers one of two parts of Jamshedpur, a planned industrial town established by Tata Group's founder Jamsetji Tata.

The town's economy largely runs on the steel plant and allied activities. Das, Jharkhand's only Chief Minister to complete a five-year tenure, Das is fighting to retain a seat he has held since the state's first election in 2005 after it was carved out of Bihar in the year 2000.

Cong’s Rameshwar Oraon leads by 14K votes in Lohardaga

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Congress's Jharkhand unit president Rameshwar Oraon has taken lead of thousands of votes from his nearest BJP rival and former Congress state chief Sukhdeo Bhagat from Lohardaga constituency.

Oraon is leading by over 14,000 votes from Lohardaga Assembly seat. He secured 31,954 votes against his nearest rival BJP's Sukhdeo Bhagat who has secured 17,879 votes.

The Lohardaga Assembly, which voted on November 30 in the first of the five-phase Jharkhand Assembly elections for 81 seats, is located in the Lohardaga district of South Jharkhand region and falls under the Lohardaga Parliamentary constituency.

In the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly election, Kamal Kishor Bhagat of the All Jharkhand Students' Union (AJSU) had won from the Lohardaga Assembly seat which is a semi-urban (Scheduled Tribes) constituency with an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 5.99 per cent and a Scheduled Tribe population of 56.95 per cent.

The estimated literacy level of the district in which this constituency falls in is 68.29 per cent. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Sudarshan Bhagat won from Lohardaga Parliament seat.

Jharkhand polls: Babulal Marandi leads by 18,645 votes

Ranchi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P) chief and former chief minister Babulal Marandi is leading by 18,645 votes over Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) candidate Raj Kumar Yadav from Dhawar constituency in the assembly polls.

Commenting on early trends, Marandi told reporters they will accept people's mandate. "Let the results come, we will sit and discuss what to do. We will accept the people's mandate," he said.

BJP's Lakshman Prasad Singh received less than six thousand votes so far. As Congress did not put up any candidate, its alliance JMM, however, is fighting from the seat. JMM candidate Nijamuddin Ansari got less than three thousand votes so far.A

In 2014 assembly polls, Yadav had defeated Babulal Marandi by a margin of 10,712 votes.

In the 2019 assembly elections, there were a total of 3,07,519 eligible voters, of which 1,62,506 were male, 1,45,011 female and 2 voters of the third gender.A

Dhanwar Assembly is a part of Koderma Lok Sabha constituency.

Dhanwar is also famous for silver ornaments and metal utensils, apart from a rapidly growing electronic market.

In the 2019 elections, the voter turnout was recorded at 61.68 per cent.

The seat went to the polls on December 12, 2019 in Phase 3 of the assembly elections.

A total of 14 candidates, including 7 independents, contested elections from Dhawar constituency.

Cong-JMM alliance set to form govt in Jharkhand

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance is all set to form the government as per emerging trends of the Election Commission, where the tie-up stitched ahead of the five-phase polls have gained over 15 seats between them.

While the incumbent BJP is leading on 31 seats, the Congress (13), JMM (24) and RJD (3) can easily cross the majority mark of 41.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das is trailing from both Jamshedpur East with 4,643.

The JMM led by Hemant Soren is leading in 24 seats, Congress in 13 and RJD in 3 seats. Soren is tipped to be the Chief Minister on the alliance winning the polls. There have been celebrations at Congress headquarters here as functionaries distributed sweets.

Soren is trailing from Dumka by less than 500 votes, and is leading Berhait by 9,948 votes. AJSU president Sudesh Mahto is leading with over 15,000 votes from Silli assembly seat.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, earlier on Monday, asserted that the BJP will come back to power in the state and said that it was too early to react on the early trends.

Speaking to reporters here, Das said, "I'm sure that we are winning and the government will be formed under the leadership of BJP."

With the BJP on the back foot, the Congress is asserting that the win in Jharkhand is a rejection of BJP's national narrative of CAA, Article 370.

Congress Secretary Pranav Jha said, "The people have rejected the national narrative built by the BJP in the state over the issues of Article 370, Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and voted for the local issues."

He said, the people of the state voted on local issues -- inflation and employment for youth.

Not wishing to take any chances and aiming to further consolidate their position, to unseat the BJP, the Congress has spoken to former ally Babulal Marandi of the JVM, which is leading on 3 seats. Marandi is leading by 18,645 votes from Dhanwar.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) chief and former chief minister Marandi is leading over Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) candidate Raj Kumar Yadav.

Sources told IANS that JVM has not given any assurance to the Congress leaders so far, but have said that the party will hold talks only after the final results are out.

In the battle for the key seats in Jharkhand, Das is facing a tough fight from his former colleague and Independent candidate, Saryu Roy from Jamshedpur East. Das is trailing by over a thousand votes over Saryu Roy.

Former deputy chief minister and All Jharkhand Students Union Party (AJSU) president Sudesh Kumar Mahto is leading by 17,125 votes over Seema Devi of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha from Silli.

There are some seats where the margin is very small. Six constituencies have emerged where the margin is below 500 and it can swing either way, by the time the final vote is counted.

Marandi, who fancies his chances as kingmaker has said, "no one is untouchable in politics" and the BJP and the Congress were both in touch with him.

Speaking to the media here, Marandi said, "In politics no one is untouchable. We are in touch with the BJP and the Congress."

BJP’s decision to choose non-tribal CM goes awry

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress-RJD alliance seems to have got good support of the tribal voters in the state as the poll results suggest that the BJP's experiment with a non-tribal chief minister has fallen flat.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has influence over 26 per cent of tribal votes and minorities of the state.

In 2014, the BJP chose Raghubar Das as a non-tribal chief minister. It was for the first time in the history of the state that a non-tribal was chosen for the top job. It's a pattern the BJP established in Maharashtra and Haryana after winning state elections in 2014. The party picked Devendra Fadnavis, a Brahmin, in Maharashtra, ignoring the dominant Marathas, and a non-Jat Manohar Lal Khattar in Haryana.

Das' appointment, sources said, sent out a message that the BJP does not care about state's tribals, and is challenging their supremacy.

However, in a belated action, BJP did appoint Arjun Munda as a cabinet minister, but the damage was already done.

On the other hand, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is believed to have its base among tribals and minorities, and as the results suggest, has emerged as a favourite among the voters in the 81-member assembly.

Grand alliance will get majority: Tejashwi

The latest trends show that RJD is leading in five seats. However, in 2014 Assembly election , RJD did not get a single seat in the state.

People voted against BJP policies in Jharkhand: Kharge

New Delhi, Dec 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) As the Grand Alliance of Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) passed the halfway mark in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday said the mandate is against the ruling BJP and its policies in the state.

Speaking to reporters here at the party headquarters, Kharge said, "This is a good result and the people's anger is shown towards the BJP government."

He said in Jharkhand people were "fed up" with the BJP government. "Even at the Centre, people are fed up over unemployment, inflation and even farmers were suffering. All those things helped Congress and our alliance partners (JMM and RJD) with that. In that context people voted for Congress and its alliance," the Congress leader said.

His remarks came soon after the Grand Alliance comprising the three parties passed the halfway mark of 42 in the 81-member Assembly. The JMM was leading on 24 seats while the Congress and the RJD were leading on 13 and five seats, respectively. The BJP is leading on 29 seats in the mineral-rich state.

When asked that the BJP brought demonetisation, goods and services tax (GST) and also the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the unrest in the country over the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Kharge said, "NRC is a different thing and now already against CAA people have shown their anger and it is visible they (BJP) are still doing wrong things and they think that whatever they do people will accept it."

"And as results are coming, this itself shows that the people are fed up with their demonetisation, GST, unemployment," Kharge added.

Earlier in the day, Congress leader Pranav Jha told IANS, "The people have rejected the national narrative built by the BJP in the state over the issues of Article 370, CAA and the NRC and voted for the local issues."

Jha further said that the Congress-JMM-RJD alliance will work for the welfare of the people in the state for the next five years.

The Congress, JMM and RJD contested on 31, 43 and seven seats, respectively, in Jharkhand.

Jharkhand voted in five phases from November 30 to December 20.
