Mohali, May 7 (IANS) Gujarat Lions rode on some powerful batting to defeat Kings XI Punjab by six wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Sunday evening.

Chasing a challenging target of 190 runs, Gujarat romped home with two deliveries to spare.

Gujarat now have eight points from 12 matches, while Punjab remain on 10 points from 11 matches.

Dwayne Smith played a starring role for Gujarat, smashing 74 runs off a mere 39 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries and four towering sixes along the way.

Smith and fellow Ishan Kishan gave Gujarat's chase a rocking start, producing a opening partnership of 91 runs in just 9.2 overs before Punjab pacer Thangarasu Natarajan ended it as Kishan hit a full length delivery into the hands of David Miller at deep midwicket.

Smith followed him back to the pavilion a couple of overs later when he was dismissed by Glenn Maxwell.

Skipper Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthick then helped Gujarat get near the target with a 42-run stand which came off 35 balls before the former was caught by Gurkeerat Singh wide of deep midwicket while trying to smash a Sandeep Sharma delivery out of the park.

Aaron Finch was also dismissed later in the same over when he offerred an edge to Punjab wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha while attempting to pull a bouncer.

But Karthick and Ravindra Jadeja ensured that Gujarat achieved in the last over.

Earlier, a century from Hashim Amla and a half-century by Shaun Marsh helped Kings XI Punjab post 189/3.

Amla plundered 104 runs off 60 balls with eight boundaries and five sixes before being trapped lbw by an accurate yorker from Gujarat pacer Basil Thampi on the penultimate ball of the innings.

This was his second hundred in the IPL.

Amla was also involved two crucial partnerships with Marsh and Maxwell.

Marsh made 58 runs with six boundaries studding his 43-ball knock.

Gujarat pacers Thampi, Pradeep Sangwan and Dhawal Kulkarni picked up a wicket each.

Asked to bat first, Punjab were off to a slow start as Gujarat pacers Sangwan and Kulkarni maintained a tight line.

Sangwan struck in the very first over with a chest high-short ball to Gujarat opener Martin Guptill on the off stump line. The Kiwi star tried to hook the ball but only managed to offer a top edge to Thampi at long leg.

However, Amla and Marsh helped the hosts shake off the early jitters and steadied the innings with a 125-run partnership in 89-balls.

Amla batted well, showcasing his impeccable technique to find the gaps at regular intervals.

Kulkarni finally brought the stand to an end, dismissing Marsh with a slower delivery. The Australian was outfoxed by the change of pace and miscued his shot with Aaron Finch doing the honours at long on.

Marsh's departure prompted Amla to go on the offensive and the South African star hit two sixes off consecutive overs.

Known for his classical technical batting, Amla also showcased his ability to improvise.

Thanks to big hitting Amla and excellent support from the other end by Maxwell, the Punjab run rate showed no signs of slowing down.

The duo added 50 runs between them off 25 balls with Amla doing most of the scoring.

The 34-year-old reached his century in style, smashing Thampi for a six over the cover boundary.

However, Thampi made a superb comeback, pitching an accurate yorker right in the block hole to trap Amla leg before.

Maxwell remained unbeaten on 20 runs off 11 deliveries which included two sixes.

Bengaluru, May 5 (IANS) Kings XI Punjab produced an excellent bowling performance to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 19 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Friday.

Defending a low total of 138 runs, Punjab dismissed the star-studded RCB batting line-up for 119 runs in 19 overs.

Medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma and left-arm spinner Axar Patel were the stars of the show with three wickets each.

Patel returned figures of 3/11 in four overs while Sandeep took 3/22.

The win keeps Punjab in the running for a spot in the play-offs as they have 10 points from an equal number of matches, while RCB have been knocked out of the reckoning as they have a mere five points from 12 matches.

Except for opener Mandeep Singh who made 46 runs off 40 balls before bowled by Glenn Maxwell, none of the RCB batsmen could tackle the Punjab bowlers.

The dominance of the Punjab bowlers can be gauged from the fact that only three RCB batsmen could reach double figures.

Earlier, RCB restricted Kings XI Punjab to 138/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Patel (38 not out) and Manan Vohra (25) were the major contributors to Punjab's cause.

Punjab got off to a poor start as openers Hashim Amla (1) and Martin Guptill (9) were sent back to the pavilion inside five overs.

Amla was dismissed by medium pacer Aniket Choudhary on the penultimate ball of the first over and Guptill was dismissed by Sreenath Aravind in the fourth over.

With 18/2 in 3.3 overs, Marsh and Vohra tried to stabilise the innings and they were almost successful but after adding 21 runs in 3.3 overs the latter was sent packing by spinner Pawan Negi. In his 17-ball knock Marsh slammed three boundaries.

Vohra, who seemed good at the middle was also dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in the 12th over. Vohra's 28-ball knock was laced with one boundary and one six.

Skipper Glen Maxwell (6) also failed to rise to the occasion as he was also dismissed by Chahal in the very next over.

Middle-order batsmen Wriddhiman Shah (21)and Patel then forged a 34-run partnership to help the visitors to get past the 100-run mark.

But soon, Shah, who played 25 balls and slammed one boundary, was bowled by Shane Watson in the 18th over.

In the very next over, new batsman Mohit Sharma (6) was also dismissed with the scoreboard reading 119/7.

The last over saw some boundaries from Patel but that was not enough for Punjab to post a challenging total.

For Bangalore, Choudhary and Chahal scalped two wickets each while Aravind Watson and Negi chipped in with one wicket each.

Pune, April 29 (IANS) Any hopes Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had of qualifying for the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs virtually ended after they lost by 61 runs to Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Saturday.

The 2017 edition of the IPL has been a disappointing one for the Bangalore franchise, losing seven of their 10 outings so far to be virtually knocked out of the race to the play-offs. Pune, on the other hand kept their play-off dreams alive to stay at the fourth spot after registering their fifth win from nine matches.

Chasing a decent 158, RCB were in self-destructive mode losing wickets at regular intervals with skipper Virat Kohli (55) fighting a lone battle to take the team through.

Kohli, who went in to open the innings with Australian Travis Head (2), failed to find the support at the other end as the Pune bowlers seized the momentum to their favour.

Medium pacer Jaydev Unadkat started the downfall for the visitors with the wicket of Head, who chopped one to the stumps before New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson packed back the dangerous AB de Villiers (3) after the South African added RCB's highest partnership of 21 runs for the second wicket with Kohli.

New man Kedar Jadhav (7) looked good in the middle before a lack of communication between him and the skipper cost Bangalore their third wicket.

Rookie off-spinner Washington Sundar immediately jolted the visitors with the wicket of Sachin Baby (2), brilliantly caught by a diving Steve Smith before Furguson saw the back of Stuart Binny (1) to reduce the men in red and black to 49/5.

Leg-spinner Imran Tahir then joined the party with the wickets of Pawan Negi (3), Adam Milne (5) and Samuel Badree (2) to further dent RCB's hopes.

Struggling at 82/8, Kohli, who by then had reached his half century, the lone RCB batsman to get to the double figures also lost his focus to be caught at sweeper cover by Mayank Agarwal off Daniel Christian after striking four boundaries and a six.

Towards the end, tailenders Yuzvendra Chahal (4 not out) and Sreenath Aravind (8 not out) had little answer to the mounting asking rate as RCB finished at 96/9.

Earlier, Pune rode on skipper Smith's 45 and Manoj Tiwary's unbeaten 44 to reach 157/3 after being sent in to bat.

The home side failed to find the momentum against the RCB bowlers, who stuck to a perfect line and length as the last five overs yielded just 46 runs for the home side.

Ajinkya Rahane's (6) dismal run continued to haunt Pune before opener Rahul Tripathi (37) cashed in on the dropped chance by Virat Kohli at 11, to help the hosts cross the 50-run mark with Smith.

Smith, who looked in good touch raised a 40-run second wicket stand with Tripathi before the Maharashtra right-hander spoilt another good start to be caught behind by Kedar Jadhav off left-arm spinner Pawan Negi.

The fall of Tripathi, who slammed four boundaries and a six during his 28-ball knock, however dried up the boundaries for Pune before Smith broke the shackles in the 12th over, by spanking Badree for a flat six and two consecutive fours.

New man Tiwary, promoted to No.4 joined the party by taking Yuzvendra Chahal to the cleaners before Smith added two more fours off Stuart Binny as the third wicket partnership flourished to 50 off 32 balls.

Struggling to find the momentum at 115/3 after 16 overs, Pune needed Mahendra Singh Dhoni (21 not out) and Tiwary to press on the accelerator and the former skipper responded in style by muscling Sreenath Aravind for a flat straight six.

Mohali, April 29 (IANS) Kings XI Punjab's skipper Glen Maxwell blammed bowlers and fielders for their loss in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Sunrisers Hyderabad by 26 runs here on Friday.

He also said the score posted by Hyderabad was chaseable but they got few soft dismissals and that resulted in their defeat.

"It was chaseable. We were sloppy with the ball and in the field. We bowled either side of the wicket. There were a few soft dismissals in isolation. If you put together it looks bad," Maxwell said after the match here.

The Punjab skipper, however, lauded Shaun Marsh's brilliant 84-run innings. Marsh faced 50 balls and slammed 14 boundaries and two sixes.

"Marsh was absolute class, he was striking the ball beautifully. He has done it for Kings XI for 10 seasons. It is a quick turnaround for us. At least we will be at home and turn up next game," Maxwell said.

Chasing 207/3 posted by Hyderabad, Punjab were restricted to 181/9 with Shaun Marsh (84), Eoin Morgan (26) and Martin Guptill (23) the only major contributors.

Bindra Stadium here on Friday.

Chasing 208, Punjab were restricted to 181/9 with Shaun Marsh (84), Eoin Morgan (26) and Martin Guptill (23) the only big contributors.

For Hyderabad, Siddharth Kaul and Ashish Nehra scalped three wickets each while pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar took two wickets for 27 runs.

Punjab started off on a positive note but after adding 26 runs for the first wicket, opener Guptill was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar as he tried to loft the knuckle ball but was caught by Moises Henriques. Guptill's 11-ball knock was laced with four boundaries and one six.

After one over, the in-form Manan Vohra (3) was sent packing by experienced pacer Nehra to make Punjab reel at 37/2 in four overs.

Skipper Glen Maxwell also failed to step up to the occasion as he was dismissed by Kaul on a duck.

Middle-order batsmen Marsh and Morgan then forged a 73-run partnership to give some hope to the hosts but while trying to pace up the scoring rate, the latter was dismissed by spinner Rashid Khan.

Morgan tried to slog-sweep a tossed up delivery but failed in doing so and Deepak Hooda took a good catch at wide long-on. Morgan faced 21 balls, in which he hit two boundaries and one six.

With 70 runs required from 30 balls, Wriddhiman Saha (2) came in to the middle and but could not gave Marsh the much-needed support as he was clean-bowled by Kaul in the 15th over.

Things got worse when Marsh was sent back to the pavilion in the next over. His brilliant 50-ball knock was stopped by Bhuvneshwar with the score on 138/5. Marsh slammed 14 boundaries and one six before he was caught at deep mid-wicket by Hooda.

Punjab's lower-middle order also failed to deliver with Axar Patel (16), Anureet Singh (15), Mohit Sharma (2), Ishant Sharma (5 not out) failed to achieve the required run-rate.

Earlier, put in to bat, openers David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan helped Sunrisers Hyderabad post a challenging 207/3.

Right from the start, Dhawan (77) and Warner (51) thrashed Punjab's bowlers all around the park, getting past the 100 run mark in just 10 overs.

Both openers forged a 107-run partnership with the run-rate of 10.70 before Warner was sent packing by Punjab's skipper Maxwell.

Warner tried a slog-sweep over mid-wicket but totally missed the ball and got bowled. His 27-ball knock was laced with four boundaries and four sixes.

Unperturbed by the fall of Warner's wicket, Dhawan, who seemed good at the middle, continued the assault.

But after adding another 40 runs with Kane Williamson (54 not out), he was dismissed on a Mohit Sharma delivery. Dhawan slammed nine boundaries and one six in his 48-ball innings.

Williamson along with veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh (15) then paced up the scoring rate, adding 24 runs in three overs before Yuvraj was dismissed by Maxwell in the 17th over.

With two overs remaining, middle-order batsmen Henriques and Williamson then completed the proceedings in style as they added 31 runs in two overs to post a challenging total.

For Punjab, Maxwell scalped two wickets while Mohit Sharma took one wicket.

KKR on Friday cantered to a seven-wicket win with 22 balls to spare against Delhi Daredevils, a match Jackson made his debut in. KKR are on top of the league table with 14 points from nine matches.

Jackson remained not out on 12 along with skipper Gambhir who starred for the team with an unconquered 71.

"Everyone plays the IPL to make the playoffs. There is no such number but as many as you win is better," Jackson told reporters after the game.

On Gambhir, Jackson said: "It's the best thing that could have happened to me on debut. Batting with him was great. He is such a person who knows his games. He said when I went to him that 'I am there to back you and just play your game'. That's all was what was needed."

Jackson had to keep wickets from the 10th over in the first innings when Robin Uthappa picked up a knock.

"I was ready to keep as I was told to be ready. It always feels good to do things you know how to do better," he said.

Kolkata, April 28 (IANS) It was virtually a sauna here on Friday with scorching heat and sweat dripping down one's back, courtesy high humidity, with the Met office ruling out any signs of rain which could bring relief.

Despite the soaring mercury (with the maximum temperature touching 37.2 degrees Celsius) cricket fans trooped in at the Eden Gardens he to watch Kolkata Knight Riders take on Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 game. Shielded by the caps, hats and sunscreens, spectators beat the heat with soft drinks.

Kolkata's usually buzzing streets appeared dull with most preferring to remain indoors.

The preferred mode of transport was the Metro and the air-conditioned buses. Those caught in between transits hid under umbrellas and took shelter under store canopies.

The day also saw the Kolkata audience welcome the release of "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion".

Many took leave from work to catch the first-day-first-show of S.S Rajamouli's magnum opus. Among the audiences, were an excited clutch of moviegoers from neighbouring Bangladesh.

"This is the perfect way to beat the heat. We have been waiting for this movie for two years and its worth the wait," a moviegoer said.

According to the Met department, humidity soared at around 91 per cent on Friday morning and there is no forecast of rain.

Kolkata, April 28 (IANS) Delhi Daredevils opener Sanju Samson on Friday lamented the dropped catch of Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) Robin Uthappa, saying the miss cost them the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 match.

Uthappa smashed a 33-ball 59 as KKR won easily by seven wickets to stay at the top of the points table and inch closer to the playoffs. Delhi were condemned to their fourth defeat in as many games and are now staring down the barrel.

Uthappa made the most of some comical fielding in the sixth over, when a leading edge off the in-form batsman's willow saw Samson and Amit Mishra converge in the region between short fine leg and square leg with none of them getting under the ball eventually. The Karnataka batsman was on nine at that time.

"Catches do count. Catches win matches and there was a dropped chance and he (Uthappa) made use of it. I think that cost us the match," said Samson, whose 60 off 38 balls went in vain as Delhi posted 160 after being asked to bat first.

"It's a busy crowd here lot of noise, so it's not easy to communicate when the ball goes up. It happens in a match but I think we need to move on. we have a match day after. We have to forget it and move on," the 22-year-old added.

Asked about him failing to build on starts, Samson said: "I think I am still learning. I am a 22-year-old and have a long career ahead. I need to finish games and need to play the whole 20 overs. Whenever you play 20 overs, the team has the best chances to win. I am trying for that."

Asked how does Delhi come back from here, the Kerala rookie said: "When you play a sport like cricket failure is more than success. We all as sportsmen know how to come back from failures."

"So I think we need to keep going as life. In life also we have failures. We all have doubts but we need a positive mindset. We need to challenge ourselves and move on positively."

Delhi are languishing at the bottom of the table after playing seven games with just four points in their kitty.

Kolkata, April 28 (IANS) There was no stopping the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) juggernaut as Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa tore apart Delhi Daredevils' bowling to script a seven-wicket win and inch closer to a play-off berth in an Indian Premier League (IPL) game at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.

Gambhir remained unbeaten on 71 off 52 deliveries, his fourth IPL fifty, joining hands with Uthappa (59; 33b 5x4 4x6) for a match-winning 108-run stand for the second wicket to script the two-time champions' fourth successive victory. Delhi, on the other hand, were condemned to their fourth loss on the trot.

Kagiso Rabada (2/20), who was the pick of the Delhi bowlers, bowled a wide ball to help the rivals bag the win which helps them consolidate their position at the top of the table with 14 points from nine outings.

Gambhir is now the top-scorer in this edition followed by Uthappa. The pair have scored 403 runs together, the highest this season.

Rabada castled opener Sunil Narine for just four but the in-form pair of Gambhir and Uthappa started from where they had left off in the last game against Rising Pune Supergiant taking the Delhi bowlers to the cleaners.

Uthappa made the most of some comical fielding in the sixth over, when a leading edge off the in-form batsman's willow saw Sanju Samson and Amit Mishra converge in the region between short fine leg and square leg with none of them getting under the ball eventually. The Karnataka batsman was on nine at that time.

Uthappa was at his lethal best yet again, notching up the fifty in just 24 balls smashing five fours and three sixes. He was finally run out but the damage had already been done.

Gambhir at the other end, stood like a wall as Manish Pandey was done by a Rabada beauty, getting clean-bowled for just five.

Delhi captain Zaheer Khan picked up a hamstring injury after bowing the first ball of his second over which was completed by Corey Anderson.

Earlier, Coulter-Nile picked up three wickets to blunt Sanju Samson's half century and restrict Delhi to 160/6 in 20 overs.

Australian Coulter-Nile, coming back into the side after a one-match break, returned best figures of (3/34) in his four overs picking up the wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant at crucial junctures to halt Delhi's surge.

Samson (60; 38b 4x4 3x6) top-scored with his second fifty of the IPL season while Iyer (47; 34b 4x4 1x6) played a good hand too.

Ankit Bawne -- playing in place of Aditya Tare -- was not out on 12 while Pat Cummins did not face a ball when their innings ended.

Delhi openers Karun Nair (15; 17b, 3x4, 0x6) and Samson started well with the former playing the aggressor's role in the first few overs, welcoming Chris Woakes with two consecutive boundaries in his first two deliveries of the match.

The pair stitched together a 48-run stand before Narine removed Karun Nair, who missed a sweep with the ball striking his back leg for a plumb leg before wicket decision.

The hosts suffered a blow when in-form wicketkeeper batsman Uthappa picked up a knock and had to leave the field with Jackson -- playing in place of Piyush Chawla -- taking over the gloves in the 10th over.

Iyer and Samson did not hit a boundary for 46 balls before the latter brought up his fifty with a six off Kuldeep Yadav over the square leg boundary.

The duo engineered a 75-run partnership for the second wicket before Samson tried to play across the line and was plumb in front off the bowling of Umesh Yadav (1/38).

Iyer at the other end, took time to settle down before finally looking to accelerate by hitting Umesh for two back-to-back fours. Yusuf Pathan made a hash of the first one, failing to stop the innocuous ball.

Rishabh Pant (6) did not last long, adjudged LBW unluckily when the ball was going down leg off Coulter-Nile's delivery. In the same over, Iyer was sent back just three short of his half century by the Australian.

Corey Anderson (2; 5b; 0x4, 0x6) was dropped twice by Kuldeep Yadav in the 17th over before the New Zealand all-rounder was run out.

Kolkata, April 28 (IANS) Four Indian soldiers who laid down their lives for the motherland were honoured by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) by naming Eden Gardens stands after them ahead of an Indian Premier League (IPL) game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils on Friday.

The stands were unveiled by CAB President Sourav Ganguly, Lieutenant General Praveen Bakshi, General Officer Commanding-in-chief Eastern Army Command and other military and CAB dignitaries.

One of the stands was named after Colonel N.J. Nair who was ambushed by around a 100 armed insurgents while negotiating a series of road bends on the Mokokchung-Mariani Road in Nagaland in 1993.

He was awarded the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra posthumously. Lieutenant General Praveen Bakshi unveiled the stand.

Ganguly unveiled the stand named after Havildar Hangpan Dada, who encountered terrorists in Naugam in Jammu and Kashmir in 2016. He was awarded the Ashok Chakra posthumously.

Two other stands were named after Subedar Joginder Singh and Lieutenant Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa.

Subedar Singh, who refused to evacuate despite being injured and held on to a defensive position in NEFA in 1962, was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously.

His name was unveiled by Chief of Staff, Headquarters Eastern Army command Lieutenant General Dushyant Singh and CAB joint secretary Subir Ganguly.

Lt. Colonel Thapa repulsed three Chinese attacks in Ladakh in 1962 before being captured. He was awarded the highest wartime gallantry medal Param Vir Chakra. His name was unveiled by General Officer Commanding, Bengal Area, Lieutenant General Giriraj Singh and CAB joint secretary Avishek Dalmiya.

New Delhi, April 28 (IANS) Delhi Daredevils' English recruit Sam Billings hopes a dominating performance with the willow in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, will keep him in good stead whenever he gets a chance to represent his national cricket side.

Playing his second IPL, Billings feels the intensity of the tournament is much more this year, as he himself has become an important cog in the wheel for the Delhi franchise.

Acknowledging the kind of pressure while playing in front of an 80,000 odd crowd at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the 25-year-old said it only helps in developing the mental aspect of performing at the highest level.

"This is my second year in the IPL, but it feels even more intense than last year. I was here last year as a squad player, but this year I feel like a senior member of the team for the Delhi Daredevils, even though I'm only 25," Billings was quoted from his column at ecb.co.uk.

"I've enjoyed taking on the extra responsibility, it's been great to bat at the top of the order and to get this experience in such a quality tournament and such different conditions."

"It has not been the easiest tournament so far for the Daredevils but I think you are seeing again this year that the quality of the IPL is as close as you can get to international cricket."

"Playing against 80,000 people at Eden Gardens certainly helps with the mental aspect of performing at the highest level, when the pressure is on," he added.

Commenting on his own form, Billings wrote: "As for my own form, I feel like I'm hitting the ball really well and I like I'm in good nick. I would like to have built more on a couple of starts but I think showed with my half century against Kings XI Punjab that I am ready to do a job for the team at the top of the order."

"I want to play on the biggest stage and perform to my best at that level. It's a whirlwind to play in the IPL, but it's an amazing experience and hopefully it will make me a better player for England."

Besides Billings, Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan, the year's IPL witnessed a rapid surge in demand for England regulars like Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Jason Roy and Tymal Mills.

Billings feels the growing number of England players in the IPL only speaks about the kind of standing in which English cricket is held.

"It's great to play against my mates from the England team. I've now crossed paths with all of them except Jason Roy and the fact that there are so many of us out here shows the standing in which English cricket is currently held."

"I am playing with several internationals and everyone says that the England players are exceptional. You can tell that other teams fear the prospect of coming up against England at the moment, which bodes well for us," he added.

Commenting on his interactions with his national side's teammates, Billings said: "I speak to Jos Buttler a lot and we had a few beers and a catch up after our game against Mumbai Indians the other night."

"I also had a chance to see Ben Stokes and we played a round of golf together which was good fun. It was the most expensive player in the IPL against the cheapest -- but somehow I still ended up buying him lunch!," he added on a lighter note.

Rajkot, April 28 (IANS) As the Indian Premier League (IPL) enters its middle phase, Gujarat Lions will aim to accelerate from here as they face a comfortable looking Mumbai Indians at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Saturday evening.

Gujarat, who have six points from eight matches, are improving day by day as out of the three matches, they have won two. Their last win was a seven-wicket thrashing of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). What would have pleased the Rajkot franchise is the way the bowlers dismissed a power-packed batting line-up of Bangalore for 134 on Thursday.

Australian medium pacer Andrew Tye has been their leading light. With 12 scalps, he is the second highest wicket-taker of this edition so far. Along with him, youngsters Basil Thampi and Nathu Singh are improving, keeping veteran Praveen Kumar on the bench.

"Nathu Singh has been bowling extremely well in the last two games and Basil Thampi too has been a consistent wicket-taking bowler in first class cricket. Credit also goes to Ankit Soni, who has joined the team recently and performed well under pressure," captain Suresh Raina said after the win in Bengaluru.

A lot will depend on the performances of all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and James Faulkner. It would also be interesting to see if Irfan Pathan, who was roped in as a replacement for injured all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, would be included.

It will be important for the Suresh Raina-led team to hit some kind of momentum that will help them move up the ladder.

Their next encounter is against second-placed Mumbai, who saw their six-match winning run came to an end with a three-run loss to Rising Pune Supergiant on Monday.

Mumbai will know that out of the two opponents they have lost to in the eight matches played so far, Gujarat are one of them and the visitors will be keen to get back to winning ways.

Their batsmen have been contributing. Nitish Rana (266 runs), Jos Buttler (230), Parthiv Patel (169) have been consistent, along with all-rounders Kieran Pollard (199 runs), Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya. Rohit Sharma has shown signs of returning to form with two crucial knocks.

Mumbai's bowling line-up boasts the likes of Mitchell Johnson, Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, Hardik, Harbhajan Singh and Pollard.

It should be an interesting contest when these bowlers will be up against Gujarat's destructive batsmen Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, Raina, Aaron Finch and Dinesh Karthik.

"We have a lot of match-winners in our team, starting from McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Ishan Kishan, Dinesh Karthik, Jadeja, Finch and myself. We have that balance in our team and today was a result of that combination that we have been searching for," Raina felt.

After back to back wins against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians, the Pune side went down to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their previous outing, to be at the fourth spot in the standings.

On the other hand, last year's runners-up RCB have found the going tough this season, managing to win only two of their nine matches to be languishing at the penultimate spot in the eight-team table.

Going into Saturday's first double-header at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here, Pune will bank on their in-form opening duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi to give the team a great start.

The middle order comprising the likes of captain Steve Smith, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Manoj Tiwary has the experience to take the opposition bowlers to the cleaners at ease. With all-rounders Daniel Christian and Rajat Bhatia the lower order batting can come in handy if needed.

In the bowling department, the young Indian pace duo of Jaydev Unadkat and Shardul Thakur have impressed both in the opening and death overs while leg-spinner Imran Tahir, Christian and rookie tweaker Washington Sundar can provide the breakthroughs as well as stop the flow of runs in the middle overs.

Meanwhile, the Virat Kohli-led RCB have their task cut out if they are to stand any chance of making it to the play-offs.

The flop show in all the departments against Gujarat Lions at home on Thursday will only haunt them more when they take the field here.

RCB's fortunes depend on their captain and his opening partner Chris Gayle's domination at the top along with South African AB de Villiers, who also failed to fire against the Lions.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Kedar Jadhav was the lone bright spot along with all-rounder Pawan Negi but that was not enough for them to get over the line.

RCB's bowling too looked toothless with the likes of Sreenath Aravind, Travis Head, Aniket Choudhary failing to impress. Samuel Badree and Negi managed to be amongst the wickets.

Squads:

Rising Pune Supergiant: Steve Smith (Captain), Mayank Agarwal, Ankit Sharma, Baba Aparajith, Ankush Bains, Rajat Bhatia, Deepak Chahar, Rahul Chahar, Daniel Christian, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (WK), Ashoke Dinda, Faf du Plessis, Lockie Ferguson, Imran Tahir, Jaskaran Singh, Usman Khawaja, Ajinkya Rahane, Saurabh Kumar, Ben Stokes Washington Sundar, Milind Tandon, Manoj Tiwary, Adam Zampa, Jaydev Unadkat, Ishwar Pandey, Rahul Tripathi, Shardul Thakur.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (Captain), Sreenath Aravind, Avesh Khan, Samuel Badree, Stuart Binny, Yuzvendra Chahal, Aniket Choudhary, AB de Villiers, Praveen Dubey, Chris Gayle, Harpreet Singh, Travis Head, Iqbal Abdulla, Kedar Jadhav, Mandeep Singh, Tymal Mills, Adam Milne, Pawan Negi, Harshal Patel, Sachin Baby, Tabraiz Shamsi, Billy Stanlake, Vishnu Vinod, Shane Watson.

Bengaluru, April 27 (IANS) Gujarat Lions dominated with both bat and ball to thrash Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by seven wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday evening.

Chasing a modest target of 135 runs, Gujarat crossed the line in 13.5 overs.

Aaron Finch and skipper Suresh Raina played a crucial role with 92-run stand.

Finch produced a whirlwind innings of 72 runs, hitting five boundaries and six sixes during his 34-ball stay in the middle, while Raina remained unbeaten on 34, off 30 balls with four hits to the fence and a six.

This is the sixth defeat for RCB who are going through a poor run this season. They are now placed seventh in the eight-team table with a mere five points from nine matches with only two wins to their credit.

They had suffered a humiliating 82-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on April 23 when they were bundled out for a mere 49 runs which is the lowest-ever total in the IPL's 10 year history.

Gujarat registered their third win of this season to climb to the sixth position. They have six points from eight matches which include three wins and five defeats.

Defending a modest total, the hosts were handed a glimmer of hope when West Indies leg-spinner Samuel Badree picket up wickets in consecutive overs.

Badree struck the first blow for RCB in the third over when Ishan Kishan could not time his shot properly while attempting a sweep and was trapped plumb in front of the stumps.

Brendon McCullum also did not last long as he was also dismissed by Badree. The New Zealand star stepped out to attempt a bit hit but miscued his shot only to be caught by A.B. de Villiers at long on.

That was the only bit of success the hosts will enjoy in a long time as Raina and Aaron Finch proceeded to take on the RCB bowling.

Raina enjoyed a major reprieve in the 10th over. The jampacked stadium collectively leapt to their feet when Raina holed out to the fielder on the deep midwicket boundary while attempting to hit Yuzvendra Chahal out of the park.

But the joy of the RCB players and fans soon turned to disappointment when the delivery turned out to be a no ball.

Raina and Finch made full use of the reprieve and continued to punish the RCB bowlers.

By the time Finch holed out to de Villiers at long on when he mistimed a pull off Pawan Negi, Gujarat was well on their way to victory.

Earlier, Gujarat produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict RCB to 134.

This was the second successive match in which the big three guns of the RCB batting line-up -- Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and de Villiers -- proved to be a damp squib.

Negi was the highest scorer for the hosts with 32 runs off 19 balls which included three boundaries and two sixes.

Kedar Jadhav, who smashed 31 runs off 18 deliveries, was the only other RCB batsman who managed to trouble the Gujarat bowlers.

For Gujarat, Australian pacer Andrew Tye returned figures of 3/12 while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja also picked up a couple of wickets.

RCB skipper Virat Kohli was the first to go when he picked out Finch at short fine leg while attempting a big shot off young pacer Basil Thampi.

Tye then took consecutive wickets with the first two balls of the next over. He struck a crucial blow with his very first ball of the match when he induced an outside edge off the dangerous Gayle with wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthick doing the honours behind the stumps.

The Australian pacer then produced a similar delivery to remove Travis Head, whose edge travelled to Raina at first slip.

Jadhav and de Villiers then tried to spark an RCB comeback, adding 36 runs between them off 26 balls after the former kicked off the partnership with three boundaries off Thampi in the sixth over.

But the partnership did not last too long as Jadhav was removed by Jadeja. The batsman had exposed his stumps while attempting a late cut to third man, but he missed as the ball held its line and crashed into the stumps.

RCB plunged into further trouble when a mix-up between de Villiers and Mandeep Singh coupled with an excellent piece of fielding by Jadeja saw the South African being run out.

Negi then strode to the middle to play a slam-bang knock and produce a 40-run stand with Mandeep.

It was however, not enough to revive the hosts' innings.

By the time Negi hit an Ankit Soni delivery into the hands of Thampi at deep midwicket, the wind had been knocked out of RCB's sails.

Bengaluru, April 27 (IANS) Gujarat Lions produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to 134 in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday evening.

This was the third consecutive match in which the big three guns of the RCB batting line-up -- Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers -- proved to be a damp squib.

Pawan Negi was the highest scorer for the hosts with 32 runs off 19 balls which included three boundaries and two sixes.

RCB skipper Virat Kohli was the first to go when he was picked out by Aaron Finch at short fine leg while attempting a big shot off young pacer Basil Thampi.

Tye then took consecutive wickets with the first two balls of the next over to put the visitors in the driver's seat.

He struck a crucial blow with his very first ball of the match when he induced an outside edge off the dangerous Gayle with wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthick doing the honours behind the stumps.

The Australian pacer then produced a similar delivery to remove Travis Head, whose edge travelled to Suresh Raina at first slip.

Jadhav and de Villiers then tried to spark an RCB comeback, adding 36 runs between them off 26 balls.

Jadhav kicked off the partnership with three boundaries off Thampi in the sixth over.

Brief scores:

Royal Challengers Bangalore: 134 in 20 overs (Pawan Negi 32, Kedar Jadhav 31; Andrew Tye 3/12, Ravindra Jadeja 2/28) vs Gujarat Lions.

Kolkata, April 27 (IANS) Delhi Daredevils are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to rein in the barrage of losses and start a winning spree -- and that was evident with the amount of time coach Rahul Dravid and captain Zaheer Khan on Thursday spent inspecting the Eden Gardens pitch where they take on Kolkata Knight Riders a day later.

The pair strolled around the 22-yard strip for close to 45 minutes engaging in a long discussion.

Delhi bank on their star-studded bowling arsenal comprising the likes of Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris, Mohammed Shami and Zaheer. In the spin department there is Amit Mishra.

Delhi have just won two games out of six and Zaheer made it clear ahead of their outing against in-form Kolkata Knight Riders that the next nine days where they play five matches will decide their fate.

The Eden strip, since being relaid, has assisted the pacers with bounce and carry. On Thursday, a fair amount of grass was seen on the strip with Dravid later talking to curator Sujan Mukherjee for a while.

"I should congratulate Sourav (Ganguly) on that (the pitch). He has done a fantastic job since taking control. We are upbeat. The wicket is looking really good," said Zaheer.

The trio of Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Woakes and Colin de Grandhomme scalped three wickets each in the last match played here as KKR sent Royal Challengers Bangalore packing for IPL's lowest score of 49.

Morris is the second-highest wicket taker so far in the competition with 12 to his name from six games. Cummins has also picked up nine.

South African pace sensation Rabada took the wicket of Parthiv Patel in his very first match of the season in spectacular fashion. The speedster yorked the southpaw hitting the base of the leg stump.

On Friday, Delhi would look to making the most of the wicket and bowl first if they win the toss, a pattern most captains have followed this season.

Kolkata, April 27 (IANS) The next nine days will be make or break for struggling Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils, skipper Zaheer Khan said on Thursday ahead of their game against table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Delhi are languishing at seventh in the points table with just four points in their kitty from six matches.

Starting Friday, they play Kings XI Punjab (April 30), Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 2), Gujarat Lions (May 4) and Mumbai Indians (May 6) with the last three matches at home.

"We need a winning momentum. In the next nine days, we are playing five matches. It is a very important phase. If we can string a winning momentum in this phase, things will change by May 6," Zaheer said on the eve of their tie against Kolkata, who are in scintillating form having coasted to two victories against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rising Pune Supergiant.

"It's very important that we look at this phase as nine days rather than just tomorrow's game. Next nine days will define the season for us," the 38-year old left-arm pacer said.

Asked about their opponents' rollicking form and whether the defeat at the hands of KKR after getting into an advantageous position in their first meeting is a physiological setback, Zaheer said it won't matter at all.

"Loss to KKR is not a physiological setback. We have not played that many gams in the tournament," Zaheer said.

The veteran pacer said fit-again Mohammed Shami is not being played because of team combination.

"He is absolutely fit. Nothing is wrong with him. There are so many big players not getting a chance. Shami has done so well for India and will continue doing so. Sometimes you get caught up with team combination," he said.

Backing his team to deliver the goods at the business end of the season, Zaheer said the young talent at Delhi's disposal is fantastic.

"If we could have converted two wins out of those close games, the same looking at the team would have changed," the skipper said.

"Overall the potential we have as a unit is amazing. We have got some amazing young talent and it just needs little bit of confidence and that does comes with winning. These five games are very crucial for our campaign. I'm confident our guys will deliver when it matters," he added.

On their rivals, Zaheer said: "It's a very good challenge. They have been good chasing and batting really well.

"KKR are a stable side. They have won few tournaments as well. Someone like Gautam Gambhir is a good leader. He has got his plans sorted. As a team, they look very stable," Zaheer added.

Kolkata, April 27 (IANS) West Indian all-rounder Marlon Samuels will join the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils on Saturday, skipper Zaheer Khan said ahead of their game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.

Samuels was named as replacement for the injured Quinton de Kock for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

De Kock, the South African wicketkeeper-batsman, was ruled out due to injury ahead of the season.

"He is going to join us on the 29th. He will definitely boost the side," Zaheer said.

A veteran of 71 Tests, 187 One-Day Internationals and 55 Twenty20 Internationals, Samuels has played for one IPL franchise in previous editions.

Delhi are seventh in the points table having won only two games in six outings so far.

Bindra Stadium here on Friday.

With just three wins from seven matches, the home side are currently placed fifth, one short of where they would at least like to be at the end of the league format.

The David Warner-led Hyderabad have won four of eight games so far and have shared the points in a rain-abandoned outing against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday.

In their home match against Punjab this season, Hyderabad secured a five-run win while defending a modest total of 159 runs.

Hyderabad will once again hope their openers Warner (235 from 7 games) and Shikhar Dhawan (282 from 7 games) score the bulk of runs while the middle order comprising Moises Henriques, Yuvraj Singh, Naman Ojha, Deepak Hooda play the long handle when the situation demands.

The visitors have an equally potent bowling attack, with Purple Cap holder medium pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar (16 wickets) and young Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan (10 wickets) leading the department.

On the other hand, Kings XI Punjab will be hoping for another sublime score from opener Hashim Amla, who can take the attack to the opposition camp.

KXIP scored a near-200 total (198) against the Mumbai Indians with Amla scoring a terrific hundred and skipper Glenn Maxwell also hitting some lusty blows. In the middle order, David Miller, Wriddhiman Saha, Shaun Marsh and all-rounder Axar Patel can smash the bowlers all around the park.

The hosts will, however, need to rethink on their bowling strategy with the likes of medium pacers Sandeep Sharma and Mohit Sharma failing to provide the early breakthroughs although Axar, with his left-arm spin has been economical in the middle overs.

Squads:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner (Captain), Tanmay Agarwal, Ricky Bhui, Bipul Sharma, Ben Cutting, Shikhar Dhawan, Eklavya Dwivedi, Moises Henriques, Deepak Hooda, Chris Jordan, Siddharth Kaul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ben Laughlin, Abhimanyu Mithun, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammed Siraj, Mustafizur Rahman, Ashish Nehra, Naman Ojha (WK), Rashid Khan, Vijay Shankar, Barinder Sran, Pravin Tambe, Kane Williamson, Yuvraj Singh.

Kings XI Punjab: Glenn Maxwell (Captain), David Miller, Manan Vohra, Hashim Amla, Shaun Marsh, Armaan Jaffer, Martin Guptill, Eoin Morgan, Rinku Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Arman Jaffer, Anureet Singh, Mohit Sharma, K.C. Cariappa, Pradeep Sahu, Swapnil Singh, T Natrajan, Matt Henry, Varun Aaron, Axar Patel, Marcus Stoinis, Gurkeerat Mann, Rahul Tewatia, Darren Sammy, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Nikhil Naik, Ishant Sharma.

KKR have been in sublime form, winning two back-to-back games in convincing fashion.

While the twice IPL champions skittled Royal Challengers Bangalore for the tournament's lowest score of 49 to win by a massive 82 runs here last Sunday, skipper Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa massacred Rising Pune Supergiant bowlers while chasing a 183-run target with ease.

"I thought we are a good chasing side and we are confident of chasing anything. Restricting the opposition to 180 was terrific and the credit needs to go to the bowlers," said Gambhir after the Pune game as his side registered their sixth win out of eight games in this year's IPL.

Gambhir has been in terrific form, scoring 305 runs in eight matches so far with an average of 50.83. The southpaw has the Orange Cap, given to highest scorer in the tournament, and is happy to be able to contribute in the team's cause.

"It's good to keep contributing, I keep saying Orange Cap does not matter if you don't have points as a team. But it is good to score runs and when you are, score as much as you can," added Gambhir, who has played 224 Twenty20 innings from 228 matches so far.

Nathan Coulter-Nile, who bowled a fiery first spell at the Eden against RCB, was rested for the Pune game and the Australian quick is expected to be drafted back in the side against Delhi on a track which helps fast bowlers.

Sunil Narine seems to have blended well in the opening slot and is doing his job of hitting big in the Powerplay to good effect.

Coming to the visitors, the Zaheer Khan-led Delhi side have won just twice in their six matches.

In the last meeting of the two sides, KKR showed champions intent to wriggle out of a hole and script a four-wicket win at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Chasing a modest 168, the men in purple were 21/3 but Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan bailed their team out wonderfully.

Delhi will have to improve their batting if they are to harbour any chances of making it to the playoffs. Barring Sanju Samson and England's Sam Billings, none of the batsmen have been consistent.

Samson's brilliant century against Rising Pune Supergiant was the highlight and in the next game Billings' gritty 50 helped Delhi win two matches on the trot. But since then, the Rahul Dravid-coached side have lost three in a row.

Kagiso Rabada, Pat Cummins, Chris Morris, Zaheer and Amit Mishra make a good reading as far as their bowling is concerned and they would look to back their strength against KKR.

In the head-to-head count, Delhi have lost 11 and won eight of the 19 meetings so far against KKR.

Squads:

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (captain), Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav, Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Piyush Chawla, Robin Uthappa, Shakib Al Hasan, Chris Lynn, Umesh Yadav, Yusuf Pathan, Sheldon Jackson, Ankit Singh Rajpoot, Trent Boult, Chris Woakes, Rishi Dhawan, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Rovman Powell, R. Sanjay Yadav, Ishank Jaggi, Darren Bravo, Sayan Ghosh, AColin de Grandhomme

Delhi Daredevils: Zaheer Khan(captain), Angelo Mathews, Corey Anderson, Kagiso Rabada, Pat Cummins, Ankit Bawne, Aditya Tare, Murugan Ashwin, Navdeep Saini, Shashank Singh, Mohammed Shami, Shahbaz Nadeem, Jayant Yadav, Amit Mishra, Shreyas Iyer, Sam Billings, Sanju Samson, Chris Morris, Carlos Brathwaite, Karun Nair, Rishabh Pant, Chama Milind, Khaleel Ahmed, Pratyush Singh.

Pune, April 26 (IANS) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) rode skipper Gautam Gambhir and in-form Robin Uthappa's crackling half centuries to sail to a facile seven-wicket win over Rising Pune Supergiant in an IPL game and go on top of points table here on Wednesday.

Uthappa (87; 47b 7x4 6x6) stole the show with some crisp power hitting as he brought up his third IPL 50 in this season of the Indian Premier League at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Gambhir (62; 46b 6x4 1x6) at the end played second fiddle as the visitors made the most of some poor bowling by the hosts to finish on 184/3.

Uthappa was dropped on 12 when the team was 51/1 by Jaydev Unadkar off Imran Tahir's bowling.

Gambhir notched up his 34th half-century in his 100 game for the men in purple. For Pune who set a target of 183 after being asked to bat first, only Unadkat and Dan Christian got wickets.A

Narine (16; 11b; 3x4 0x6) was run out after the spinner turned opener got off to a flying start.

Unadkat took the wicket of Uthappa while Christian sent Gambhir back in the hut but it was too little too late as the damage was already done. Darren Bravo (6 not out) milked a cover drive to hit the winning runs as Manish Pandey (0 not out) watched from the non-striker's end.

Earlier, captain Steve Smith led from the front with an unbeaten half-century to help Rising Pune Supergiant post 182/5.

Smith (51 not out from 37 balls) held the innings together as openers Ajinkya Rahane 46 (41b; 4x4, 1x6) and Rahul Tripathi 38 (23b; 7x4) played important knocks. Smith's half century was laced with four boundaries and a six.

Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav (2/31) was the pick of the bowlers for KKR.

Pune openers recovered from a tentative start against KKR new ball bowlers with Tripathi playing the aggressor's role after being dropped on 35 by Yusuf Pathan off Colin de Grandhomme's delivery.

The in-form 26-year-old right-hander took a liking to pacer Umesh Yadav, hitting three fours, two in one over, to race to 38 off just 22 balls before leg-spinner Piyush Chawla outfoxed him with a googly that the batsman chopped onto his stumps trying to cut.

At the other end, Rahane looked steady for his knock but fell short when Sunil Narine went wide outside off stump to force him to come down the ground and get stumped by wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa.

Rahane was part of two vital partnerships, with Tripathi for a 65-run stand for the first wicket and with Skipper Smith for a 47-run second-wicket stand.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni played a quickfire 23 (11b 1x4 2x6) before Kuldeep got the back of the former India captain with a googly as Uthappa stumped him.

Dan Christian 16 (6b 0x4 2x6) hit big too before getting out off the last delivery as KKR leaked 30 runs in the last two overs. Christian tonked two sixes to take his side to a par score on this wicket.
