Bhubaneswar, July 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) The holy city of Puri in Odisha is gearing up for the world-famous Ratha Yatra, during which the divine siblings, Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister Devi Subhadra, will embark on their nine-day annual sojourn to the Gundicha Temple from the 12th-century Jagannath Temple on July 16 (Thursday).

On Wednesday, the chariots of the holy siblings are being ceremonially moved from the traditional construction site, or 'Ratha Khala', to near the Lion's Gate of the Jagannath Temple in the holy coastal town of Puri as part of the final preparations for the annual Rath Yatra.

Gripped with ecstasy and religious fervour, lakhs of devotees from across the globe, who have gathered in Puri to witness the grand spectacle, will pull the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra — Nandighosh, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalan respectively — for around 3 km to the Gundicha Temple on Thursday.

The Gundicha Temple is believed by the holy texts to be the birthplace of the Chaturddha Murti (Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Maa Subhadra, and Sudarshan). Various departments of the state government have made elaborate preparations to ensure a smooth and incident-free Rath Yatra on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons, Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Arabinda Kumar Padhe said, “All the preparations for the Rath Yatra have entered the final stage.”

He informed that the 'Netrotsav' and 'Nava Yauvana Darshan' rituals, which offer the first glimpse of the deities after their 14-day isolation following their ceremonial recuperation from fever, were held on Tuesday smoothly as per the schedule. Padhee further added that the rituals on Wednesday are going on as per the schedule as well. The district administration, police and severtitors are all prepared for the Rath Yatra to begin from Thursday.

He informed that the Pahandi Bije ritual, the ceremonial procession in which the holy triads step out of the temple to embark on the nine-day journey, is scheduled to begin between 9 and 9.30 a.m. on Thursday.

Earlier, Puri Collector Dibya Jyoti Parida stated that the administration has made comprehensive arrangements for this year’s Rath Yatra, focusing on crowd control, security, essential services and the convenience of devotees arriving from across the country and abroad.

Meanwhile, the Puri district police have put in place dynamic traffic arrangements, keeping in view the inflow and outflow of vehicles visiting Puri to ensure smooth traffic movement. The police have installed 595 permanent and 1,050 temporary signages for public convenience. Around 12,000 police personnel, along with adequate number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), will be deployed for security arrangements during the festival.

The Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy will also remain on alert to check any illegal activities through the coastal route. Meanwhile, as many as 19 senior IPS officers have been assigned the duty to supervise the overall security arrangements.

The state government has installed 473 CCTV cameras to keep a watch on the movement of devotees and 65 large LED screens to disseminate important information to devotees in Odia, Hindi and English. Similarly, 16 permanent mobile towers and several temporary towers have also been set up to strengthen communication services. Bulk messaging facilities will also be used to disseminate information.

New Delhi, July 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the Centre on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking safeguards against the alleged misuse of the scribe facility in the Civil Services Examination by candidates with disabilities.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia sought responses from the UPSC, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and posted the matter for further hearing on September 16.

Appearing for the petitioner, advocate Rahul Bajaj submitted that the petition was directed against the UPSC's existing qualification criteria for scribes. "We have challenged the scribe qualification requirements of the UPSC on the ground that the scribe's qualification cannot be more than the minimum qualification of the candidate, which is graduation," Bajaj told the Delhi High Court.

Questioning the maintainability of the plea as a PIL, the CJ Upadhyaya-led Bench observed: "How can it be a PIL? The affected candidate can move a petition." In response, Bajaj argued that the existing framework "is resulting in an unequal playing field." The Delhi High Court thereafter issued notice on the petition.

Filed by Deepstambh Foundation, the PIL seeks directions to the UPSC to disallow the services of any scribe who has previously appeared in the Civil Services Examination at any stage and to bar the use of scribes affiliated with UPSC coaching centres. It also seeks a direction requiring every scribe to furnish an undertaking that they have neither previously appeared in the Civil Services Examination nor been engaged in coaching civil services aspirants.

According to the plea, the UPSC notification permits candidates with benchmark disabilities, including blindness, low vision, locomotor disability and cerebral palsy, to avail the services of a scribe. It states that the qualification of the UPSC's scribe or a candidate's own scribe "will not be more than the minimum qualification criteria of the examination", while requiring the scribe to be matriculate or above.

Since the minimum educational qualification for the Civil Services Examination is graduation, the petitioner contended that the present framework permits graduates who have themselves appeared in the examination or are associated with coaching institutes to act as scribes.

The petition alleged that some candidates engage scribes who are faculty members at UPSC coaching institutes or individuals who have appeared in the Civil Services Examination up to the Preliminary, Main or even Interview stage. "These scribes, being graduates, technically meet the Commission's qualification criteria but provide an undue and unfair advantage that completely distorts the level playing field," the plea said.

It further alleged that such scribes, owing to their familiarity with the examination pattern and answer-writing techniques, "subtly influence content, structure, and quality of responses", effectively turning the examination into "a collaborative effort rather than an individual test of merit". The PIL clarified that it does not seek to dilute the scribe facility available to persons with disabilities, but only seeks narrowly tailored safeguards to prevent its alleged misuse while preserving accessibility.

According to the petition, Deepstambh Foundation had submitted a representation to the UPSC on April 11, 2026, highlighting the alleged loophole and proposing corrective measures, but received no response, prompting the filing of the PIL.

Dehradun, July 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) Despite persistent heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand, the flow of devotees undertaking the Char Dham Yatra has remained steady, with thousands of pilgrims continuing to visit the sacred shrines every day.

Authorities said the enthusiasm among devotees has remained undeterred even as adverse weather conditions continue to affect several parts of the hill state.

According to officials, more than 6,000 pilgrims are visiting Shri Badrinath Dham every day, while the number of devotees who have offered prayers at Shri Kedarnath Dham has crossed the 14-lakh mark so far during the ongoing pilgrimage season.

Officials have, however, appealed to pilgrims to remain cautious while travelling, as continuous rainfall has resulted in road blockages, slippery trekking routes, landslides and other weather-related challenges in several areas of Uttarakhand.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for various parts of the state, particularly the hilly regions, including Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, etc, warning of heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.

Authorities said elaborate arrangements made by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee along with the local administration continue to remain in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage despite the challenging weather.

After offering prayers at Shri Badrinath Dham, one of the devotees shared his experience with IANS, saying, "We had come here to visit Hemkund Sahib. After offering our prayers there, we felt that we should also visit Shri Badrinath Dham. We came here as well, and it has been a wonderful experience. Everything is good. People should come, offer their prayers, and enjoy the place."

Another pilgrim also appreciated the arrangements made for the Yatra despite the prevailing weather conditions.

"The arrangements are nice. Our pilgrimage was nice as everything went smoothly despite the weather conditions," the devotee told IANS.

Meanwhile, officials said that more than 14 lakh pilgrims have so far visited Shri Kedarnath Dham, reflecting the continued influx of devotees despite the ongoing monsoon season.

Speaking to IANS, Rudraprayag District Magistrate Vishal Mishra said, "As of the data available till the evening of the day before yesterday, more than 14 lakh pilgrims have completed the Char Dham pilgrimage. At present, the weather remains a major challenge. During the monsoon, roads are often closed, and there is a risk of landslides. Pilgrims should travel cautiously; they should avoid crossing the rivers and going to the streams and waterfalls as heavy rainfall continues across the state."

He further said that the high-altitude pilgrimage has also posed health challenges for some devotees.

"Apart from this, there have been some casualties because of health problems, including heart attacks, due to the high altitude. Some pilgrims who were experiencing some kind of health issues were rescued and taken for medical care," he added.

Earlier, taking note of the prevailing weather conditions, Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey had appealed to devotees and tourists to stay updated about weather forecasts throughout their journey and plan their travel accordingly.

He had specifically advised pilgrims to exercise additional caution while planning their itinerary in view of the sensitivity of the weather conditions.

Pandey also urged pilgrims to strictly adhere to the advisories and guidelines issued by the district administration and local authorities during the pilgrimage.

He said instructions had already been issued to all concerned government departments to ensure that adequate preparations and necessary arrangements remain in place for the safety and convenience of devotees undertaking the Char Dham Yatra.

Erode, July 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) A large group of farmers from the Lower Bhavani irrigation command area has demanded equitable distribution of irrigation water among the three major canal systems fed by the Bhavanisagar dam, urging the Tamil Nadu government to abandon the existing staggered release schedule and ensure simultaneous supply to the Lower Bhavani, Thadapalli-Arakkankottai and Kalingarayan canal schemes.

The demand was raised during a meeting of farmers, who alleged that the existing pattern of releasing water at different intervals had placed the Lower Bhavani command area at a significant disadvantage.

Under the current schedule, the Thadapalli-Arakkankottai canal receives water in April, the Kalingarayan canal in June, while the Lower Bhavani canal gets its allocation only in August. By this time, the critical cultivation season is already underway.

Farmers said the delayed release of irrigation water has resulted in repeated crop failures and severe financial losses over the years. According to them, the Lower Bhavani region has lost eight cultivation cycles of paddy and 16 cycles of pulse crops because of the uneven distribution of water.

They added that the area is now reeling under acute drought conditions, with drinking water scarcity worsening in several villages.

The Bhavanisagar dam is one of Tamil Nadu’s most important irrigation reservoirs, supporting agriculture across Erode, Tirupur and Karur districts.

The reservoir irrigates thousands of hectares where crops such as paddy, sugarcane, turmeric, banana and coconut are cultivated. It also serves as a vital source of drinking water for lakhs of people in the region.

Seeking a long-term solution, the farmers urged the Water Resources Department to allocate irrigation water based on the acreage covered under each canal system rather than following the existing staggered schedule.

They also demanded simultaneous release of water to all three canal schemes in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the water tribunal, saying such a system would ensure fairness and prevent recurring disputes over water sharing.

Lower Bhavani Irrigation Farmers’ Association leader V. Nallasamy said farmers would no longer accept delayed and discriminatory release of irrigation water, which has repeatedly affected cultivation in the region.

He urged the district administration and the Water Resources Department to ensure equitable and timely distribution of water so that farmers under all three canal systems receive their fair share and are able to plan agricultural operations without uncertainty.

Kolkata, July 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) In an effort to enhance the travel experience on Indian Railways’ premier Vande Bharat Express, the Howrah Division of Eastern Railway (ER) on Tuesday introduced a family "Phygital" magazine "Vande Express" to be distributed among passengers.

The magazine will be distributed among passengers of the Howrah-New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express free of cost. The magazine is innovative as it will allow passengers to read some content directly, while other material can be accessed by scanning QR codes.

The magazine was developed by ANOTHER INDIA, and the free distribution will not result in any financial liability on the Railways. The magazine was formally launched by Uday Shankar Jha, principal chief commercial manager, ER, Vishal Kapoor, divisional railway manager, Howrah Division, and other senior railway officials.

"Designed to enhance the onboard travel experience, ‘Vande Express’ integrates conventional print media with QR-enabled digital content, offering passengers access to information on travel, tourism, heritage, lifestyle, children's interactive activities, and railway services," an ER official said.

"The publication also disseminates information on key passenger-centric initiatives of Indian Railways, including the RailOne App, Rail Madad, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Vande Bharat Sleeper, and the cultural and tourism heritage of eastern India," he added.

The initiative has been implemented under a non-fare revenue model, enabling the introduction of a value-added passenger service through private participation without any expenditure by the Railway Administration. Besides enriching the travel experience, the project serves as an effective platform for passenger awareness and dissemination of important railway information.

The initiative reflects the innovative approach adopted by ANOTHER INDIA in developing a technology-enabled publication that combines print and digital engagement while ensuring the commercial sustainability of the project, the official said.

The introduction of "Vande Express" marks another step towards creating a more informed, engaging and digitally connected travel experience, reaffirming Indian Railways’ commitment to improving passenger services through innovation, technology and customer-centric initiatives.

Agra, July 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) Artisans in Agra, who have been involved in their generational craft of making 'Pietra Dura' artworks, on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he presented an elegant marble inlay work box featuring the renowned Indian craftmanship to Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn AC, during his recent visit to the country.

The gift from the Prime Minister featured fine semi-precious stones meticulously embedded into marble to create a lasting work of art.

Speaking to IANS, President of the Khuddam-e-Roza committee, Haji Tahir Uddin Tahar said: "It is a matter of pride for us and we are extremely fortunate that PM Modi presented our artform to the Australia Governor-General."

"This artwork is called 'Pietra Dura' (marble inlay) and is made in Agra by artisans here. This is my ancestral business, my forefathers were also involved in this," he added.

While admitting that the artwork had lost its sheen off late, Tahar said: "Now since this has come into PM Modi's knowledge and has also been appreciated by the Australian Governor-General, so we are hopeful of earning more from this."

Shamsuddin, an artisan, said that the artworks made by them are sold abroad as well as in India.

"PM Modi is doing great work...we just hope that we keep getting work throughout the year and keep working hard to increase our income. We should be able to earn Rs 1,000 every day in this kind of work, today Rs 500-600 is not sufficient," he told IANS.

Meanwhile, PM Modi presented Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese with a collection that celebrates the fusion of culture and innovation.

From the nostalgic sounds of a 'Colonial Cousins' Album vinyl record and premium Indian coffee to a tribal Dhokra boat sculpture crafted using the ancient lost-wax technique.

The Prime Minister presented a pure wool embroidered Kashmiri stole, which is a masterpiece of traditional needlework carrying the centuries-old legacy of Himalayan textile artistry, to First Lady of Australia Jodie Haydon.

Prime Minister Modi also presented a hand-carved wooden elephant, showcasing the delicate lattice work unique to Rajasthan to Australian Opposition leader Angus Taylor.

New Delhi, July 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a cost of Rs 3 lakh each on comedian Samay Raina and four other stand-up comedians, observing that Raina had "taken the court for a ride" by failing to comply with the undertakings given in connection with insensitive jokes on persons suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

A Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana passed the order after being informed that Raina had failed to comply with the directions issued by the apex court earlier, including making efforts to engage with the Cure SMA Foundation and persons suffering from the rare genetic disorder.

"We have no reason to doubt that Samay Raina has taken the Court for a ride. He is in brazen violation of statements/undertakings given before this Court," the CJI Kant-led Bench observed.

The top court also imposed an identical cost of Rs 3 lakh each on comedians Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar alias Sonali Aditya Desai and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar.

Recording its displeasure, the CJI Kant-led Bench said Raina sought to justify the delay by claiming that a compliance affidavit had been filed, though no such affidavit was on record.

"The misconduct is sought to be compounded by stating that a compliance affidavit was filed yesterday, however, no affidavit has been filed," the apex court said.

Directing Raina to deposit the cost within two weeks, the CJI Kant-led Bench granted him 15 days to file a compliance affidavit and warned that coercive action would follow in case of continued non-compliance.

During the hearing, senior advocate Aparajita Singh, appearing for the Cure SMA Foundation of India, submitted that despite the apex court's previous directions, Raina had neither contacted the Foundation nor persons suffering from SMA.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also objected to the expression "disabled persons" used in the comedians' affidavits, submitting that the appropriate terminology should be "specially abled persons".

The CJI Kant-led Bench initially proposed imposing a cost of Rs 10 lakh before reducing it to a uniform Rs 3 lakh on each of the five comedians. "If you don't comply, it will become Rs 30 lakh," the apex court warned the comedians while directing them to comply with its earlier directions.

The matter arises out of proceedings initiated on an application filed by the Cure SMA Foundation of India, which objected to insensitive jokes made by stand-up comedians about patients suffering from the rare genetic disorder, particularly remarks concerning a two-month-old infant requiring a life-saving injection costing around Rs 16 crore.

In August last year, the Supreme Court had directed Raina and the four other comedians to issue public apologies on social media over their offensive remarks concerning the infant suffering from SMA. The comedians had subsequently tendered written apologies before the apex court.

Thereafter, while hearing the matter on November 27, 2025, the top court recorded the comedians' voluntary undertaking to organise at least two fundraising events every month, either physically or online, for a proposed corpus to support treatment of persons suffering from SMA.

It had also permitted them to invite individuals associated with the Cure SMA Foundation to their platforms to raise awareness and funds for treatment.

Expressing hope that the comedians would demonstrate "genuine remorse" and sincerity towards the cause, the CJI Kant-led Bench had observed: "We are quite certain that if respondent Nos. 6-10 (comedians) demonstrate genuine remorse and show their sincerity and commitment to the cause, these highly qualified individuals with significant achievements to their credit will also agree to appear on the platform to boost publicity for the cause."

The main writ petition filed by the Cure SMA Foundation concerns the high cost of treatment for spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic disorder, and also seeks measures to improve financial assistance for affected patients. The proceedings have also witnessed the Supreme Court expressing concern over insensitive jokes targeting persons with disabilities and examining broader issues relating to dignity, free speech and regulation of harmful online content.

The Union government had informed the Supreme Court that it is preparing draft guidelines to evolve an effective regulatory mechanism for obscene and harmful content on social media.

New Delhi, July 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) After releasing the scanned images of OMR sheets of candidates who appeared in the NEET UG 2026 re-exam on June 21, the National Testing Agency (NTA) reminded that the window to challenge OMR responses will close on Wednesday.

The result of the NEET UG 2026 re-exam is expected to be released within days of the closure of the window to challenge OMR responses, said sources.

Students will have to pay Rs 200 per challenge. The Rs-200 fee will be refunded if a student’s challenge is upheld, said the NTA.

The window to challenge the provisional answer key for the re-exam had closed earlier on June 28.

Earlier this month, the NTA started the NEET UG 2026 fee refund process after urging the students to update their bank account details on the official portal.

On June 21, as the NEET (UG) 2026 retest was conducted without major glitches, the NTA had credited the whole-of-government effort and thanked 7 lakh officials involved in the mega exercise.

“Team NTA. Team Bharat. One exam, delivered together,” said the NTA in a post on X, reaffirming its commitment to uphold the sanctity of the medical admission test whose previous round on May 3 was forced to be cancelled due to irregularities.

The NTA highlighted the effort put in on June 21, showcasing the whole-of-government effort, the scale of it and the care for 10,000 disabled candidates that went into the successful conduct of the exam.

In a message on X, the NTA said, “Around 7 lakh officials - police teams, observers and examination staff - were mobilised across India to conduct this examination, and it was done in a record 37 days.”

“NTA is especially grateful to the experts from academic institutions across the country who gave their personal time to help prepare multiple sets of question papers,” it said.

“More than 20 lakh aspirants. One exam. A country's administrative machinery - ministerial, bureaucratic, police, district and local - aligned behind a single day, so that each candidate could simply sit down and write,” it said.

“To every candidate who wrote on 21 June - well done. And to everyone who made it possible: thank you. Team NTA. Team Bharat. One exam, delivered together,” said the NTA.

Pune, July 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) Rakhi Agarwal, mother of Ketan Agarwal who was allegedly murdered by his fiancee Siya Goyal and her purported lover Chetan Chaudhary near Pune's Lohagad fort, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking speedy justice for her son.

Earlier, Ketan's father, Vishal Agarwal, had written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking a fast-tracked investigation.

In an email sent to the Prime Minister on Monday, Rakhi Agarwal expressed the immense grief her family has endured since Ketan's murder and underlined that she is not asking for any special favour.

"I never imagined that I would have to write to you seeking justice for my own son. Like every mother, I dreamt of watching Ketan build a beautiful life, get married, and grow old with us. Instead, I had to perform the last rites of my child," she wrote.

"There cannot be a bigger pain for a mother than this. My son was brutally murdered, and with him, I have lost my entire world forever. Every corner of our home reminds me of him. His room, his clothes, his photographs, and the silence that has replaced his laughter remind me every day that he will never come back," she added.

Mentioning the death of Ketan's grandfather soon after his alleged murder, she said: "He loved Ketan dearly and could not bear the grief of losing his grandson. Within days, our family lost two generations."

Rakhi Agarwal specified that she is "not asking for sympathy or any special favour".

"Modi Ji, I am only a mother...asking for justice," she wrote.

"Every day without justice deepens our pain. Ketan cannot return, but those responsible for taking his life must receive the strictest punishment under the law. I just want that my son gets justice."

She further urged that Ketan's murder should not be reduced to just another case file.

"With folded hands, I humbly request you to kindly ensure that my son's case receives the attention it deserves and that justice is delivered without unnecessary delay. Please do not let Ketan become just another case file. He was someone's son, someone's grandson, someone's brother, but to me, he was my entire world," she appealed.

The emotional mother added: "Every night I look at his photograph and say, 'Beta', your mother is still fighting for you. I only pray that one day I can tell him that..my child...you have got justice."

"I sincerely hope you will hear the voice of a grieving mother," she said, addressing PM Modi.

Along with the email, Rakhi Agarwal also sent an emotional video message. In the video, she is seen holding Ketan's photograph and breaking down in tears.

"Ketan... today the whole country knows your name. Look at his smile... look at his eyes... it feels as though he is still standing before us. His smile makes it seem like he is still here. What was his fault? What was my fault? Why was my son killed? Even today, it feels as though he is asking, 'What was my mistake?'"

Expressing her anguish, she continued: "'Raksha Bandhan' is next month. Whom will his sister tie a 'rakhi' to? What will I reply to my daughter? My entire family has been shattered by this tragedy. His grandfather could not bear the shock and left us too. I wanted to see my son get married. He was excited about his future. He had dreams and had made plans for his life."

The victim's mother said that she still feels as though her son is calling out to her.

"Mummy... Mummy... Even today, I feel like he is calling me. The day he left home, he spoke to me so lovingly. We all sat together and had a meal. A month has passed, but I still feel that he will walk through the door and come back home," Rakhi Agarwal said.

"We have cried so much that it feels as though even our tears have turned to stone. Everything in our family has been destroyed. My father-in-law, too, could not survive this grief."

At the end of the video, with folded hands, Rakhi Agarwal appealed to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India, saying: "Please... Justice for Ketan. Please help my son get justice."

Jaipur, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Rajasthan Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar said that the state government is deeply concerned and sensitive about maternal deaths and is committed to strengthening maternal healthcare across Rajasthan.

He stated that the recent maternal deaths reported from Kota, Bikaner, Bhilwara and Banswara were associated with high-risk conditions such as anaemia, hypertension, Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH), nutritional deficiencies and other complications. Most of the women had been referred to government hospitals from different locations.

According to gynaecologists, severe hypertension during pregnancy can lead to life-threatening complications, including liver and kidney failure, and a number of such cases have recently been reported. Khinvsar was chairing a meeting with gynaecologists at Swasthya Bhawan on Monday to review the recent maternal deaths in the state.

He highlighted the steady decline in maternal mortality over the past three years, noting that maternal deaths decreased from 1,094 in 2023-24 to 986 in 2024-25, and further to 824 in 2025-26. This represents an overall reduction of approximately 25 per cent during the tenure of the present state government. Expressing concern over the recent incidents, the Minister said that every maternal death is being taken seriously and that the government is making every effort to further strengthen maternal healthcare services.

He recalled that in 2011, 18 women died within three days in Jodhpur due to a single common cause, while eight women lost their lives in successive incidents in Jaipur during 2011-12. In contrast, the recent maternal deaths do not indicate a common underlying cause. Instead, the women were high-risk patients with different medical complications.

The Minister also held a detailed review through videoconferencing with doctors from Mahatma Gandhi Hospitals in Banswara and Bhilwara regarding maternity cases. Individual case reviews were also conducted with the principals and superintendents of medical institutions in Bikaner and Kota.

Describing the current situation as a challenging period for the department, Khinvsar stressed the need for strict adherence to clinical protocols and effective monitoring of Antenatal Care (ANC).

He directed officials to ensure robust infection prevention and control measures in hospitals. He further instructed senior doctors at major government hospitals to mentor doctors in smaller government facilities, particularly in the management of referral cases.

This, he said, would strengthen the capacity of peripheral institutions, reduce unnecessary referrals of high-risk pregnancies, and improve patient outcomes. He also directed senior medical officers to undertake field visits to monitor the performance of ASHA workers, ANMs and other healthcare facilities.

During the meeting, gynaecologists made several recommendations to further strengthen maternal healthcare. These included improving labour room infrastructure, addressing overcrowding in hospitals, ensuring early treatment of anaemia at the primary healthcare level, conducting audits of referral cases, maintaining referral-out registers, establishing dedicated obstetric ICUs, strengthening monitoring of antenatal check-ups, making pre-operative ECGs mandatory where indicated, ensuring regular follow-up of pregnant women by ASHA workers and ANMs, increasing public awareness, and enforcing strict compliance with established treatment protocols.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary (Medical and Health) Gayatri Rathore, NHM Mission Director Dr Jogaram, Commissioner (Medical Education) Babulal Goyal, Additional Mission Director Dr T. Shubhamangala, Director (Public Health) Dr Ravi Prakash Sharma, Director (RCH) Dr Madhu Rateshwar, SMS Medical College Principal Dr Deepak Maheshwari, government and private gynaecologists, principals of medical colleges from the participating districts, PMOs of district hospitals, and other senior officials.

New Delhi/Agartala, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Saha, has directed officials to extend all possible assistance for the advanced treatment of a 22-month-old infant suffering from a rare genetic disorder, with Tripura Bhawan in New Delhi taking swift steps to coordinate her admission and medical care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

A senior official of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Monday said that the patient, Manasree Choudhury, the only daughter of Dhruba Choudhury, has been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type-1, a severe and life-threatening neuromuscular disorder that requires highly specialised and urgent medical intervention.

Acting on the Chief Minister’s instructions, officials at Tripura Bhawan in New Delhi immediately mobilised resources to assist the family and facilitate the child's treatment, the official said.

According to the CMO, the Tripura Bhawan team has taken the initiative to coordinate with AIIMS, New Delhi, ensuring that the child receives seamless access to expert medical evaluation and the required treatment protocols without administrative hurdles.

“Our priority is to ensure that no citizen of Tripura feels helpless while facing a serious health crisis. The state government is fully committed to standing by the family of young Manasree and providing all necessary logistical and administrative support during her treatment at AIIMS,” Chief Minister Saha said in a statement.

The CMO official said that the Resident Commissioner and officials of Tripura Bhawan are continuously monitoring the situation and remain in close contact with both the AIIMS medical team and the child’s family to ensure comprehensive assistance throughout their stay in the national Capital.

The case has evoked widespread public support across Tripura. Leaders cutting across political lines, social organisations, non-governmental organisations and numerous individuals have extended financial assistance to the family, as the treatment for the rare disease involves enormous medical expenses.

Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, former Chief Minister and Lok Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb, along with several other political leaders, have come forward to support the ailing child and her family.

Deb has also taken an active initiative to facilitate the child’s treatment at AIIMS under the supervision of Dr Sheffali Gulati, Professor and Faculty-in-Charge of the Child Neurology Division under the Department of Paediatrics.

Experts said that the Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type-1 is one of the most severe forms of the rare genetic disorder, affecting muscle strength and movement.

Treatment is highly specialised and extremely expensive, prompting an outpouring of support from people across Tripura to help ensure that the infant receives the life-saving medical care she urgently needs.

Noida, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Nearly six months after the death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta in Noida's Sector 150, his father, Rajkumar Mehta, has said he no longer believes justice will be delivered in the case.

While expressing disappointment over the lack of action despite an inquiry, he said he is not in a position to pursue legal proceedings independently and, therefore, will not approach the court.

Yuvraj Mehta died on January 17, after his SUV plunged into an unguarded, water-filled construction trench in Noida's Sector 150 during dense fog.

Although he managed to climb onto the roof of his vehicle and called for help, delays in the emergency response allegedly prevented his rescue, and he eventually drowned.

Rajkumar Mehta said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to probe the incident and that the inquiry was completed promptly. However, he alleged that despite the report being submitted nearly six months ago, no meaningful action had followed against those responsible.

He also said that he is unable to fight a legal battle on his own and, for that reason, will not move the courts. Instead, he urged the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure accountability so that no other family has to endure a similar tragedy in the future.

Speaking to IANS, Mehta said, "The SIT conducted its investigation and submitted its report to the Secretary with great speed. We had high hopes that action would be taken; seeing the officials responsible for the negligence punished would offer us some mental solace regarding the loss of our son's life. Even if some action was initially taken against the negligent officials, it was revoked, and they were reinstated."

He said the developments after the inquiry had left him deeply disappointed.

"There was no clarity; no message went out to the public that those responsible for the negligence had been punished. It has been nearly six months now, and I no longer hold out any hope," he added.

Highlighting what he believes were the major lapses that led to the tragedy, Mehta pointed to three specific issues that, according to him, contributed to his son's death and reflected serious negligence on the part of those responsible.

"First, whoever dug that pit failed to put any protective measures in place around it. Secondly, the authorities failed to implement any safety or traffic measures at that turning; there was no indication of the pit's existence, so any stranger could have easily fallen into it. Furthermore, when we called the rescue team via the 112 helpline, they showed no real urgency and turned back halfway; they provided neither a life jacket nor a rope for support, and my son drowned," he said.

Recalling the desperate moments before his son's death, Mehta said, "This happened despite him struggling and calling out for help for an hour and a half. Had action been taken, it would have sent a message to society that those guilty of dereliction of duty were being punished. But nothing of the sort happened; life is simply going on as usual."

He further questioned the outcome of the inquiry, alleging that while the SIT was formed to address public concern after the incident, its findings did not translate into concrete action.

"While an SIT investigation was conducted, no actual action followed; it was an SIT report without any subsequent action; that is the reality. As I mentioned at the very beginning, there are no protective measures in place for potholes or similar hazards; such negligence continues to grow, so incidents will keep happening, and the outcome will be the same as it was in my case," he added.

"I can't approach the judiciary, so I won't take any step regarding that. However, I do hope that the Uttar Pradesh government takes strict action against those found responsible," Mehta said.

Rajkumar Mehta reiterated that his appeal is not limited to seeking accountability in his son's case alone. He said he hopes the state government takes strict action against those found responsible so that better safety measures are enforced, and similar incidents can be prevented from claiming more lives in the future.

This also comes against the backdrop of another engineer, Aryan, who died last week after falling into a drain in Noida's Sector 57 while he was on his way to work in Sector 58.

Mumbai, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Widespread rainfall across Maharashtra during the first week of July has significantly accelerated Kharif sowing operations. By July 12, the state recorded sowing across 84.61 lakh hectares, accounting for 59 per cent of the average Kharif area. However, this progress lags behind the previous year, when 82 per cent of the sowing (1.18 crore hectares) was completed during the same period.

The agriculture department has cited the El Niño impact for low sowing compared to last year.

A dry spell throughout June had left the state with a dismal 28 per cent sowing rate by the beginning of July. The subsequent revival of the monsoon in the first week of July provided much-needed relief, driving up cultivation numbers. While regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada have registered satisfactory progress, the Konkan, Pune, and Kolhapur divisions are currently lagging behind, said the state agriculture department sources.

According to the agriculture department data, the Amravati division in Vidarbha is leading the state's Kharif operations, having completed sowing across 81 per cent of its average area. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar follows at 65 per cent, with Latur at 63 per cent, Nashik at 56 per cent, and Nagpur at 53 per cent. Rice transplantation in the Konkan region has faced setbacks due to early monsoon erraticism. Rice seedlings sown in the first week of June withered away after the rains vanished. Following the arrival of good spells in July, farmers had to re-sow the nurseries.

Rafik Naikwadi, Director of the Agriculture Department, said the sowing percentage in Konkan will remain low until these new seedlings mature and become ready for transplantation. Crop plantation in the coastal region is expected to gain momentum only in the latter half of July.

Acknowledging the uneven distribution, Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharane urged farmers in lagging regions not to rush the process. While Vidarbha and Marathwada have seen satisfactory progress, Pune, Kolhapur, and Konkan are yet to reach expected sowing levels.

The Minister advised farmers to wait for adequate and sustained rainfall before initiating sowing operations. He added that premature sowing during early, isolated showers puts crops at severe risk of failing if followed by extended dry spells. Farmers are being advised by the department to shift focus towards climate-resilient and low-water-consuming crops to mitigate the impact of dry spells, said the minister.

To offset the damage caused by long gaps between two rain showers, Minister Bharane emphasised scaling up support for farm ponds. He directed the administrative machinery to make critical raw materials --particularly plastic lining sheets for farm ponds -- immediately available to farmers to maximise rainwater storage. "The administration is operating under directives to plan resource distribution, fodder availability, and drinking water management, keeping the upcoming seasons in view, treating prolonged dry spells as an immediate challenge," he noted.

In response to immense rural distress caused by inadequate rainfall and crop damage, the minister confirmed that the government is accelerating crop insurance evaluations (panchnamas) and finalising the logistics for major financial support initiatives, aiming to ease the severe credit crunch gripping dry-land farmers.

Minister Bharane said the Agriculture Department has issued specific instructions to municipal and district officials to ensure adequate supplies of quality seeds and fertilisers are maintained so that farmers face no shortages when sustained rainfall finally permits late-stage sowing.

Bengaluru, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) A 25-year-old woman committed suicide at her residence in Bengaluru, leaving a death note wherein she has blamed her husband and in-laws for torture and harassment.

"If I die, please don't spare them, mother," wrote the woman in an emotional death note before allegedly ending her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence. In the note, she allegedly held her husband and sister-in-law responsible for her death, accusing them of subjecting her to continuous harassment, police said on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Shwetha, a native of Chikkamagaluru, who was residing at Sunkadakatte in the Kamakshipalya police station limits. She was working as a teacher at a private school in Bengaluru.

She had entered into a love marriage about four months ago.

According to police, Shwetha allegedly died by suicide at her residence under the jurisdiction of the Kamakshipalya police station. After receiving information about the incident, police rushed to the spot and recovered a handwritten death note.

According to police, Shwetha allegedly died by suicide at around 11 p.m. on Sunday by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her house.

In the note, Shwetha allegedly stated that persistent harassment by her husband and his sister had pushed her to take the extreme step. She wrote that she no longer wished to live because of the alleged abuse.

Addressing her mother in the note, Shwetha reportedly wrote, "If I die, please don't spare them, mother."

She also expressed remorse, writing, "I made a mistake. Please forgive me."

She further stated, "My husband and his sister are responsible for my death. In this background, I am tortured, and I don't have any wish to live any further. In case I take the decision to end my life, don't spare them."

Police said Shwetha had entered into a love marriage around four months ago. The couple got married at the Shakti Ganapathi Temple in Kamalanagar, Bengaluru, and had been living together since their marriage.

A case has been registered at the Kamakshipalya Police Station. The police have seized the purported suicide note and launched an investigation. Officials said the allegations made in the note are being verified, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The exact circumstances leading to the incident are being probed.

Seattle, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Indian mission in Seattle organised a special event to honour Indian Armed Forces veterans and their families, recognising their dedicated service, sacrifice and enduring commitment to the nation.

The gathering, organised on July 12 (local time), brought together veterans and their families residing across the Greater Seattle area and highlighted their continued contribution to society even after retirement from military service.

The event was hosted by the Consulate General of India in Seattle in collaboration with the Embassy of India.

It recognised not only the veterans' distinguished service in uniform but also their ongoing role in mentoring younger generations, strengthening community ties and preserving the values of patriotism and national service, as highlighted by the Consulate in a series of posts on X.

Sharing details of the event, the Consulate General of India in Seattle posted on X, "Saluting the Indian Armed Forces Veterans in Seattle! In a unique celebration (organised in partnership with Embassy of India), Consulate hosted today a special gathering of Indian Armed Forces Veterans and their families, from the Greater Seattle Area and honoured them for their service, sacrifice and enduring commitment to India."

The Consulate expressed appreciation for the veterans' continued service to society, saying, "Thank each one of them for their reaffirmation that service to nation does not end with the uniform, but evolves into mentorship, community leadership and the passing on of values to future generations!"

The event was warmly received by veterans, organisers and members of the Indian community, many of whom described it as a meaningful and memorable initiative.

Several attendees noted that the gathering was the first of its kind in the region and appreciated the opportunity to reconnect with fellow veterans while being recognised by the Indian mission.

Addressing those present at the event, Indian Navy Commandant Anurag Davey (Retd.) praised the initiative and the efforts of the Indian mission.

"Today, we are here in Indian Consulate in Seattle. We concluded a wonderful gathering, coming together with all the veterans of all the Indian Armed Forces. This is a very nice initiative by the Indian mission and the military attachee here," he said.

A member of the organising team also expressed pride in being associated with the programme and acknowledged the significance of the recognition extended to veterans.

"It is my deep honour to be a part of the organising team of this event. We are immensely honoured and deeply touched by this initiative," the organiser said.

One of the attendees said the gathering reinforced a sense of belonging among members of the Indian diaspora. "It's heartening to see the Indian community, especially the veterans, coming together to remind us that we are not far from home," the attendee stated.

By bringing together veterans and their families, the initiative celebrated their lifelong commitment to the nation.

Gandhinagar, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Gujarat has trained over 4,000 young volunteers under the first phase of the 'Yuva Aapda Mitra' Scheme, moving towards its target of creating a trained community-based disaster response force across 17 districts, with women expected to account for half of all participants.

According to the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), the scheme aims to strengthen the state's capacity to respond to natural and human-made disasters by preparing local volunteers to carry out immediate rescue and relief work before specialised response teams reach affected areas.

The initiative, launched by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in 2016 with 200 volunteers in Bharuch district, has expanded across Gujarat under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

Under the current phase of the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme, 4,526 volunteers have completed training against a target of 11,850 volunteers drawn from the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), My Bharat (MYB) and Bharat Scouts and Guides (BS&G) in 17 districts.

The GSDMA said the scheme has set a specific target of achieving 50 per cent participation by women to strengthen their role in disaster risk management.

Aapda Mitras are local volunteers aged between 18 and 40 who are physically and mentally fit to undertake immediate rescue operations during emergencies.

Under an earlier phase, titled the 'Upscaling of Aapda Mitra Scheme', 5,500 volunteers from the same 17 districts received 12 days of training through the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Under the present scheme, volunteers undergo seven days of training conducted by the SDRF and master trainers in the first phase, followed by advanced training through the Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration (SPIPA) in the second phase.

The programme covers Ahmedabad, Amreli, Anand, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Kheda, Kutch, Morbi, Narmada, Navsari, Porbandar, Rajkot, Surat, Tapi, Vadodara and Valsad districts.

To support rescue operations, every trained volunteer is provided with an Emergency Responder Kit worth Rs 10,000 containing 15 essential items, including a life jacket, solar torch, first-aid kit, helmet and a 50-metre defence-grade rescue rope.

District authorities also maintain an Emergency Equipment Reserve Resource (EERR) kit valued at Rs 19 lakh for large-scale emergency operations.

The equipment includes an inflatable rescue boat, chainsaw, satellite GPS and walkie-talkies. Eligibility criteria require applicants to be residents of the concerned district and to have passed at least Class 7.

The prescribed age is between 18 and 40 years, although age relaxation is available for ex-servicemen, retired medical professionals and civil engineers.

On successful completion of the training, volunteers receive a certificate, an identity card and insurance cover of Rs five lakh for three years as part of the scheme's social security provisions.

The GSDMA noted that Aapda Mitras from Bharuch played an active role alongside the district administration during the COVID-19 pandemic and the severe floods of 2020, assisting in relief and public service efforts.

"District Emergency Operation Centres (DEOCs) maintain updated contact lists of all trained Aapda Mitras and mobilise them whenever emergencies occur. Citizens and local authorities can also approach the DEOC to seek immediate assistance from trained volunteers during disasters," officials added.

Bidar, July 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) Karnataka BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra on Monday accused the Congress government of neglecting farmers in the drought-hit regions of North and Kalyana Karnataka and urged it to immediately provide compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre to affected farmers.

Addressing a press conference at Bidar airport, Vijayendra said the drought situation had become alarming in Bidar, Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts, where rainfall has been only around 12 per cent of normal.

He alleged that the lack of rainfall had prevented sowing on more than 30 lakh hectares of agricultural land, leaving farmers in severe distress. Farmers have been unable to cultivate major crops such as tur (pigeon pea), sunflower and cotton, resulting in mounting financial hardship, he said.

Criticising Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar's recent visit to Basavakalyan in North Karnataka, Vijayendra described it as nothing more than a "photo shoot" and alleged that the government had failed to provide any meaningful relief to farmers on the ground.

Calling for immediate intervention, he urged the state government to release a minimum compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre to help farmers cope with the ongoing crisis.

Vijayendra also accused the Congress government of neglecting the Anubhava Mantapa project. He said the previous BJP government led by B.S. Yediyurappa had sanctioned Rs 100 crore and Rs 200 crore in phases and launched the project with an estimated outlay of about Rs 500 crore. However, he alleged that despite repeated public demands, the Congress government had ignored the project over the past three years. He urged the Chief Minister to immediately release the pending funds and accord priority to its completion.

Responding to questions about internal differences within the BJP's Bidar district unit, Vijayendra said a core committee meeting had been convened to discuss and resolve all local issues amicably.

He also rejected allegations of any "understanding" between BJP legislators in Bidar and Congress, asserting that the BJP remained a strong opposition party committed to safeguarding the interests of farmers and the people.

Vijayendra said the BJP's core committee would prepare a clear roadmap for district and state leaders to intensify the party's agitation and ensure that the concerns of drought-hit farmers in the region are effectively addressed.

Surat, July 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) Surat district authorities have disbursed more than Rs 4.68 crore in financial assistance to 20,745 people affected by the recent floods, with compensation for cash doles and household losses continuing across the city's worst-hit areas as survey teams complete damage assessments.

According to the district administration, 3,690 beneficiaries across six affected talukas received more than Rs 83.93 lakh in financial assistance on Sunday alone under the state government's relief programme.

The payments included immediate cash doles and compensation for damage to household belongings.

The relief exercise is being carried out under the supervision of Surat Collector Tejas Parmar following the floods that affected Surat city and surrounding areas after heavy rainfall.

By 5 p.m, authorities had distributed more than Rs 22.13 lakh in cash doles to 2,459 affected families across six talukas to provide immediate financial relief.

Taluka-wise, 28 beneficiaries in Katargam received Rs 25,200, while 849 beneficiaries in Puna were paid more than Rs 7.64 lakh. In Majura, 184 beneficiaries received Rs 1.65 lakh, and 108 beneficiaries in Abrama were paid Rs 97,200.

Udhna, one of the worst-affected areas, accounted for the largest share of the cash dole distribution, with more than Rs 11.61 lakh paid to 1,290 beneficiaries.

Alongside the cash dole payments, the administration also released compensation for household losses. A total of 1,231 beneficiaries had received a total of Rs 61.80 lakh for damage to household goods and belongings.

Under this component, 14 families in Katargam received Rs 70,000, while 426 families in Puna were paid Rs 21.30 lakh. Majura recorded payments of Rs 4.60 lakh to 92 families, Abrama received Rs 2.70 lakh for 54 families, and 645 families in Udhna were provided Rs 32.50 lakh.

Officials said surveys are continuing in flood-affected localities and further eligible beneficiaries will receive assistance after verification.

Among those assisted was Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a resident of Gitanagar in Limbayat, who lives with his wife and two sons.

Sharma, who suffered injuries to both legs and his waist in an accident about six weeks ago, said his family remained on the upper floor of their house for three days after floodwater entered their home.

Expressing gratitude for the assistance received from the district administration and the State Government, Sharma said: "Receiving food grains and financial assistance for me and my family during this difficult time has brought great relief."

He said the supply of milk, drinking water and food grains, along with Rs 6,800 as compensation for household losses, had helped his family cope with the immediate aftermath of the floods.

Another beneficiary, Jamnaben of Gitanagar in Limbayat, whose family depends on daily wage labour, said her seven-member household lost food grains, clothing and household belongings after floodwater remained inside their home for three consecutive days.

Following a survey by the district administration after the water receded, her family received ration supplies and Rs 6,800 in cash towards cash doles and household loss compensation.

Jamnaben said: "The government's assistance has been a great support. Now we will be able to buy essential household items and restart our normal life."

Separately, MLA Sangeeta Patil visited Gitanagar and distributed ration kits and financial assistance to flood-affected families. The ration kits contained five kilograms each of wheat and rice, along with onions and potatoes.

During her visit, she met affected residents and assured them of continued support. She said, "Under the guidance of the Prime Minister and in accordance with the directions of the Chief Minister, the district administration is working round the clock to assist citizens during this disaster."

The district administration said compensation payments are being made without delay following rapid surveys so that affected residents can restore their livelihoods and return to normal life as quickly as possible.

Surat, July 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) Surat district authorities have deployed 65 additional survey teams to accelerate damage assessment in flood-hit parts of the city, aiming to ensure that affected residents receive financial relief without delay after recent heavy rainfall and tidal flooding.

The decision was taken under the supervision of District Collector Tejas Parmar as the administration seeks to complete surveys of casualties, injuries, damage to homes, household belongings and other movable and immovable property at the earliest.

The surveys form the basis for distributing government relief, including cash doles and compensation for household losses.

To strengthen the exercise, 13 officers from the State Tax Department and their staff have been assigned to the operation, creating 65 new teams comprising 338 officers and employees.

The newly deployed personnel have been directed to begin field surveys immediately. The additional teams have been assigned primarily to Udhna and Majura, the worst-affected areas of Surat city.

The district administration said more officers and staff could be deployed in the coming days if required.

The reinforcement comes on top of an earlier deployment of more than 50 survey teams, involving around 250 officers and employees, who were already carrying out assessments in flood-affected localities.

Officials expect the expanded workforce to speed up the verification process and enable eligible beneficiaries to receive relief assistance more quickly.

Meanwhile, the district administration has continued the distribution of financial assistance to flood-affected families.

According to official figures, by 6 p.m. on Saturday, a total of 2,877 beneficiaries across six affected talukas had received more than Rs 65.21 lakh in financial assistance through cash doles and compensation for household damage.

Of the total, 1,918 beneficiary families received cash doles amounting to more than Rs 17.26 lakh. Udhna accounted for the largest share, with 1,666 beneficiaries receiving more than Rs 14.99 lakh.

In Katargam, 84 people received Rs 75,600, while 86 beneficiaries in Majura were paid Rs 77,400 and 82 beneficiaries in Abrama received Rs 73,800. The administration also distributed compensation for damaged household belongings.

A total of 959 beneficiaries received a total of Rs 47.95 lakh. Udhna again received the largest allocation, with 833 families receiving Rs 41.65 lakh.

Katargam received Rs 2.10 lakh for 42 families, Majura got Rs 2.15 lakh for 43 families, and Abrama got Rs 2.05 lakh for 41 families.

Officials said survey operations remain underway and additional eligible beneficiaries will receive assistance as assessments are completed.

Madurai, July 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) The water level in the Vaigai Dam, the primary source of drinking water and irrigation for five districts in southern Tamil Nadu, has risen significantly over the past few weeks, providing much-needed relief after fears of an impending water shortage triggered by a weak southwest monsoon.

Located near Andipatti in Theni district, the 71-foot-high Vaigai Dam supplies water to Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. However, the southwest monsoon, which began in June, has remained below expectations, resulting in poor inflows into the reservoir and raising concerns about water availability during the coming months.

Last month, the water level in the dam had dropped sharply to just 20 feet, prompting fears of a severe drinking water crisis in the five districts that depend heavily on the reservoir. The declining storage also casts uncertainty over irrigation prospects for the current agricultural season.

The situation, however, improved after the catchment areas of the Mullaperiyar Dam received moderate rainfall. As inflows into Mullaperiyar increased, authorities released 300 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water into the Vaigai Dam, gradually replenishing its storage despite the continued weak monsoon over much of the region.

According to the latest figures, the water level in the Vaigai Dam has now risen to 34 feet, marking a substantial recovery from last month’s low. Public Works Department (PWD) officials said the available storage is sufficient to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply to all dependent regions for the next two months. Officials said the rise in the reservoir level has effectively removed the immediate threat of drinking water scarcity in the five districts.

Nevertheless, they cautioned that the reservoir has not yet reached a level that would permit the routine release of water for irrigation. Under normal circumstances, water is released from the Vaigai Dam in June every year for the first irrigation season in parts of Madurai and Dindigul districts. This year, however, officials said such a release is unlikely unless storage levels improve further. They added that the decision would depend on rainfall over the coming days. If the catchment areas receive widespread rain and inflows into the reservoir increase substantially, the government may consider opening the dam for irrigation. Until then, priority will remain on safeguarding drinking water supplies for the five districts that depend on the Vaigai Dam.

Jerusalem, July 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) For many around the world, Israel is often viewed through the prism of conflict. Yet beyond the headlines lies another story, one best experienced through its food. From bustling markets and centuries-old bakeries to family kitchens, vineyards and contemporary restaurants, Israel offers a culinary journey shaped by history, faith and generations of cultural exchange.

Known as the Holy Land, Israel is home to sites sacred to Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Much like the country itself, modern Israeli cuisine has evolved through traditions brought by Jewish communities from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, alongside long-established Arab and Levantine food traditions. From Jews, Muslims and Christians to the Druze community, the country’s diverse heritage is reflected in the meals prepared and shared across generations.

The journey begins in Tel Aviv, where cafés spill onto pavements, restaurants remain lively late into the night and food is woven into everyday life.

A traditional Israeli breakfast captures this diversity, warm pita, creamy hummus, shakshuka, fresh salads, olives, local cheeses, tahini and pastries served alongside freshly brewed coffee or fresh orange juice.

The emphasis is simple: fresh ingredients, seasonal produce and meals meant to be shared.

A short drive away, the ancient port city of Jaffa offers a journey back in time at the iconic Abulafia Bakery, established in 1879. Run by sixth-generation baker Said Abulafia, the family-owned bakery continues to prepare sesame bagels, pita topped with za’atar and olive oil, and freshly baked sambusak using recipes passed down for more than 140 years.

“The recipes remain the same as they were more than 140 years ago. We introduce new products, but we stay true to our roots,” says Abulafia, whose bakery, owned by a Muslim Arab family, is popular among Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. He says tourism declined during the pandemic and the recent conflict but has begun recovering following the ceasefire.

Israel’s culinary diversity comes alive at Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda Market, one of the city’s most iconic food destinations. According to a culinary guide at the market, nearly 3.5 million of the roughly four million tourists who visited Jerusalem in 2019 also explored Mahane Yehuda, underlining its popularity. From hummus, falafel, freshly baked rugelach and burekas to cheeses from the Galilee and wines from the Judean Hills, the bustling market brings together Moroccan flavours, European breads, Middle Eastern spices and local produce, offering a glimpse into the many culinary traditions that have shaped modern Israeli cuisine.

In the ancient port city of Acre, celebrated chef Uri Jeremias has built one of Israel’s best-known seafood restaurants around a simple philosophy.

“The raw material makes 80 per cent of the success. The other 20 per cent is simply not spoiling it,” he says.

His kitchen, staffed by Jews, Arabs, Christians and people from different backgrounds, reflects the diversity that defines much of Israel’s culinary landscape.

The journey continues into the Galilee, where Druze home cook Mi’ad Assakla welcomes visitors into her home in Maghar. The Druze are a minority Arabic-speaking ethnoreligious community with a distinct faith and rich culinary traditions.

She introduces guests to traditional dishes such as stuffed vine leaves, majadara, tabbouleh, pita with za’atar and basbousa. Many of the ingredients, rice, herbs and aromatic seasonings, feel surprisingly familiar to Indian palates, creating an unexpected culinary connection between the two countries.

Beyond its kitchens, Israel’s food story begins in its farms and vineyards. The Jordan Valley is renowned for its Medjool date plantations, with Israel among the world’s leading producers and exporters of the premium variety. Wineries in the Galilee and Judean Hills continue a winemaking tradition that stretches back centuries. At Tulip Winery, labels such as White Tulip, Syrah Reserve and Mare White reflect Israel’s growing reputation for quality wines.

“Wine has become an essential part of our culture, in addition to its religious role,” says Dana Beny of Tulip Winery. “Young people are drinking more, they are more educated about wine, and more wineries are growing in this small country. Israel is catching up with Europe and other wine regions in terms of wine culture and production.”

Indian cuisine, too, has found a place on Israel’s dining table. Restaurateur Reena Pushkarna, who introduced Indian cuisine to Israel more than four decades ago, calls her journey “culinary diplomacy”. After early struggles, she says Indian food has found a loyal following among Israelis.

As the sun sets on Friday, much of Israel begins observing Shabbat, Judaism’s weekly day of rest. The tradition is particularly visible in Jerusalem, where many shops close, public life slows and families gather at home. From Friday evening until Saturday night, observant Jews refrain from work, cooking and the use of electronic devices, dedicating the day to prayer, rest and time with family.

At the home of Rachel and Eliyahu Elmakias, Shabbat began with traditional prayers before family and guests gathered around a table laden with mini challah rolls, Moroccan matbucha, roasted eggplant zaalouk, hummus, salmon in spicy Moroccan sauce, slow-cooked chicken sofrito, stuffed grape leaves layered with herb-infused rice and homemade desserts. More than an elaborate feast, the meal reflected a centuries-old tradition where food becomes a celebration of faith, family and gratitude.

From a century-old bakery in Jaffa and the vibrant markets of Jerusalem to Druze home kitchens, vineyards and Shabbat dinner tables, Israel’s food offers a window into its history, diverse communities and enduring traditions. Beyond its sacred sites and global headlines, some of the country’s most memorable stories are shared around a dining table.

Guwahati, July 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Kachugaon Forest Division under the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) has launched an awareness programme to promote coexistence between forest fringe communities and wildlife, with a special focus on mitigating human-elephant conflict in Assam, officials said on Saturday.

The first awareness programme on preventing human-elephant conflict was inaugurated by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Additional PCCF) and BTC's Council Head of Department (CHD), at the Thaisoguri Forest Rights Act (FRA) village under the Sanfan Range.

The initiative aims to sensitise local residents on measures to minimise conflict with wild elephants and encourage safer coexistence between people and wildlife.

The event brought together forest officials, wildlife experts, security agencies like SSB, Territorial Army, community leaders and residents from villages located near the Raimona National Park to discuss measures for reducing conflicts between humans and elephants.

In her address, Additional PCCF Sonali Ghosh highlighted the vital role of local communities in wildlife conservation and encouraged villagers to adopt safe practices that help minimise encounters with elephants.

The senior Indian Forest Service Officer (IFS) noted that elephants are an essential part of the region's forest ecosystem and stressed that maintaining ecological balance requires close cooperation between the Forest Department and local residents.

She also acknowledged the continued support of nearby communities in conserving the biodiversity of Raimona National Park.

During the awareness session, experts shared practical strategies to reduce human-elephant conflict, such as strengthening early warning systems, safeguarding agricultural fields, protecting traditional elephant corridors from encroachment and increasing public awareness in forest fringe villages.

Other experts emphasised that effective coordination among government agencies, local organisations and village communities is essential for ensuring the safety of both people and elephants.

Residents were also advised to promptly alert the Forest Department whenever elephant movement is noticed near human settlements.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from residents of Thaisoguri and neighbouring villages, who engaged themselves in discussions by sharing their experiences of crop damage and property loss caused by elephants while seeking practical and long-term solutions to the recurring issue.

The region is a part of Chirang-Ripu Elephant Reserve. The programme was attended by Kameswar Das, Chief Scientist of the Assam Agricultural University's Zonal Research Station in Gossaigaon; Porna Sharma, Senior Head Scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Gossaigaon; Major Pratap Singh Rathore of the 135 Ecological Task Force at Bishmuri; Mustafa Ali Ahmed, Divisional Forest Officer; and Shree Jeet Singh, Second-in-Command of the SSB 31 Battalion at Telipara.

Other forest personnel, security officials and guests also took part in the programme.

The BTC is an autonomous administrative body constituted under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to govern the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in western Assam.

The BTR, which shares borders with Bhutan and West Bengal, comprises four districts -- Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri.

Bhubaneswar, July 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday reviewed the preparations for the annual Ratha Yatra during a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan here and stressed better coordination, communication and safety measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.

The review came days after the Chief Minister held a similar high-level meeting in Puri on July 6.

During the review meeting on Friday, the Chief Minister assessed the overall arrangements and directed officials to maintain close coordination and constant communication at every level to avoid any communication gaps during the festival.

Majhi emphasised timely conduct of rituals, security of the chariots and devotees, crowd management and fire safety. He said efficient and experienced officers would play a key role in ensuring the orderly management of the Ratha Yatra.

Reiterating the importance of coordination, the Chief Minister said, "There should be a system for continuous sharing of information among officers and employees at every level to ensure the implementation of pre-determined decisions and to take necessary measures as required. Senior officers must ensure that there is no communication gap under any circumstances."

The Chief Minister also reviewed arrangements related to cordon management, women's safety, surveillance of suspicious persons and substance abusers, traffic regulation, quality checks of food and drinking water, emergency evacuation plans and weather-related preparedness. He asked officials to make all arrangements foolproof.

According to the official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, around 12,000 police personnel, along with adequate number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), will be deployed for security arrangements during the festival.

The Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy will also remain on alert to check any illegal activities through the coastal route. Meanwhile, as many as 19 senior IPS officers have been assigned the duty to supervise the overall security arrangements.

The CMO further added that the state government has installed 473 CCTV cameras to keep watch on the movement of devotees and 65 large LED screens to disseminate important information to devotees in Odia, Hindi and English.

Similarly, 16 permanent mobile towers and several temporary towers have also been set up to strengthen communication services. Bulk messaging facilities will also be used to disseminate information.

The government also informed that help desks will be established at Gundicha Temple to assist elderly and differently-abled devotees to have hassle free Darshan of the deities. Multiple evacuation corridors have been created for crowd management, while an Integrated Command and Control Centre will monitor all security operations.

Officials have also made arrangements for parking facilities, high-mast lighting along the Grand Road, 1,700 bio-toilets and eight temporary hospitals to provide healthcare services during the festival.

Volunteers will be deployed to ensure regular cleaning of the bio-toilets. The meeting was also informed that more than 300 special trains will operate to Puri during the Rath Yatra.

The Chief Minister directed officials to coordinate crowd management and passenger movement according to train schedules. Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration Aravind Padhee and Additional Director General of Police Soumendra Priyadarshi presented detailed reports on the preparations.

New Delhi, July 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi Zoo has welcomed three Asiatic lion cubs in a rare feat of repeat breeding in the same year involving the pair of lioness Mahagauri and lion Maheshwar, an official said on Friday.

The lioness and her three newborn cubs are presently housed in a secure maternity enclosure, where they are being provided with a calm and undisturbed environment essential for the early stages of development, said the official in a statement.

The cubs remain under the constant care of their mother and are being closely monitored by the zoo's veterinary and animal care teams through CCTV surveillance system, it said.

The repeat breeding success of the pair is a significant achievement in the National Zoological Park's conservation breeding programme for the endangered Asiatic lion, said the official.

On April 27, Maheshwar and Mahagauri had produced two healthy cubs, a male named Kartik and a female named Karni, both of whom are growing well at the zoo.

The National Zoological Park currently houses six Asiatic lions, comprising three males — Sundaram, Maheshwar and Kartik — and three females — Mahagauri, Shailja and Karni.

Last month, Union Minister of State (MoS) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh launched the "NZP Saathi App", a smart digital guide, at Delhi Zoo.

He also inaugurated self-ticketing kiosks aimed at enhancing visitor experience through smart navigation and easing online ticket booking, a statement said.

The "NZP Saathi App", available on both Android and iOS platforms, features an interactive digital map and smart navigation system that enables visitors to locate animal enclosures, washrooms, buggy points, exits and other facilities.

The app also offers thematic tours, including Express Tour, Family Tour, Grand Zoo Tour and personalised "My Tour" options.

The Self-ticketing Kiosks facilitate online ticket booking through UPI-based digital payments with free Wi-Fi connectivity for on-the-spot ticket booking.

Chandigarh, July 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday said the Centre and the Haryana government have ensured that the benefits of welfare schemes reach every eligible person at the last mile without any discrimination, guided by the principles of transparency, good governance and Antyodaya.

Addressing the media here, he said every welfare initiative of the government "is aimed at making the lives of the poor, farmers, youth, women, senior citizens and other deprived sections of society easier, more dignified and self-reliant".

Drawing a sharp contrast with the previous Congress governments, the Chief Minister said while the Congress spent decades making promises in the name of the poor, farmers, youth and senior citizens, the present government has ensured that the intended beneficiaries actually receive the benefits of welfare schemes.

He said the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have consistently sought to mislead people through election-time promises and false assurances, whereas the double-engine government has remained firmly committed to translating every promise made to the people into reality.

The Chief Minister said during the Congress regime, senior citizens had to spend years making repeated visits to government offices to secure old-age pension benefits. They were compelled to seek recommendations and endure numerous hardships before receiving government assistance.

In contrast, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guarantee, government assistance "is now being transferred directly into the bank accounts of every eligible beneficiary", he said.

He said that, for the first time since Independence, a system has been established under which eligible beneficiaries receive government assistance without having to seek favours from anyone or make repeated rounds of government offices.

The Chief Minister said the Congress raised the slogan of Garibi Hatao for years, but instead of improving the condition of the poor, it pushed them further into poverty.

CM Saini said while the Congress abandoned the poor after making lofty promises, Prime Minister Modi's welfare-centric governance has restored dignity, security and hope to those who had remained neglected for decades.

Belagavi (Karnataka), July 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday announced that the state government has decided to allocate Rs 1 crore to every rural Assembly constituency to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply in view of the prevailing rainfall deficit.

Addressing a press conference after chairing the Belagavi Division Progress Review Meeting at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi, the Chief Minister said the government is taking proactive measures to tackle the emerging drought-like situation without waiting for financial assistance from the Centre.

"To ensure that people do not face any shortage of drinking water due to inadequate rainfall, we have decided to provide Rs 1 crore to every rural Assembly constituency. The funds should be utilised by local legislators after assessing the requirements and preparing suitable plans," Shivakumar said.

He said all MLAs and MPs from the region participated in the review meeting, during which several issues concerning north Karnataka were discussed.

"My tour of north Karnataka began from the Anubhava Mantapa at Basavakalyan, the land of Basavanna. While parts of Kittur Karnataka have received some rainfall, the state as a whole has not received normal monsoon rains. The Central government has also issued a warning about the possibility of severe drought conditions across the country," he said.

The Chief Minister said review meetings had been conducted in Kalaburagi and Belagavi to assess the drought situation, and more than 50 legislators and Members of Parliament had offered valuable suggestions.

He said officials had been instructed to make adequate preparations for the supply of seeds and fertilisers to farmers.

"The state government has already released funds to Deputy Commissioners. Instead of waiting for Central assistance, we have decided to act immediately to ensure that people do not face hardship," he said.

Shivakumar added that officials had also been directed to conserve sufficient water in reservoirs to meet drinking water needs, as the availability of water for irrigation in the coming months remains uncertain.

The Chief Minister said a separate meeting would be held in Bengaluru to review the fertiliser situation with the concerned minister.

He alleged that the Central government had supplied only 50 per cent of the required fertilisers and directed officials to maintain adequate fertiliser stocks to meet farmers' needs.

Shivakumar also said several complaints had been received regarding delays caused by the Forest Department in executing drinking water and irrigation projects.

"We have been informed that pipeline works are facing hurdles at more than 60 locations due to forest-related issues. I have instructed officials that under no circumstances should drinking water projects be obstructed," he said.

On the issue of forest rights, the Chief Minister said no one should be evicted from forest areas without following due legal process.

"People who have been living in forest areas for generations should not be displaced. They must receive the rights they are entitled to under the law. Protecting such communities is our government's commitment," he added.

Jaipur, July 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) In a rare medical case, a woman in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district gave birth to quadruplets -- three daughters and a son -- at the Hira Kunwar Ba Women's Hospital. The babies were delivered through a Caesarean section and are currently under intensive medical care as they were born prematurely.

Jyoti Kashyap, wife of Arun Kashyap and a resident of Bhoi Mohalla in Jhalawar city, delivered four babies at around 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday. The unusual birth drew attention across the hospital, with doctors describing it as an extremely rare occurrence.

According to the hospital administration, all four babies were born at around 29 weeks of gestation and have been admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to their premature birth and low birth weight.

Paediatrician Dr Naresh Meena said the infants have underdeveloped lungs and require specialised medical care and respiratory support.

Three of the babies weigh approximately 1.1 kg each, while the fourth baby girl weighs around 1.2 kg. A healthy full-term newborn generally weighs 2.5 kg or more, making close monitoring essential in this case.

Doctors at the hospital said the newborns are being continuously monitored by a team of specialists, including resident doctors Dr Vishal Nagar and Dr Vijay Bakoliya.

Dr Vishal Nagar described the delivery as an exceptionally rare event.

"Quadruplet pregnancies are uncommon and occur only in a very small number of cases. This is the first time in my medical career that I have witnessed the birth of four babies in a single delivery," he said.

This is Jyoti Kashyap's second pregnancy. The couple already has a four-year-old daughter.

Hospital authorities said the mother is in stable condition and has been shifted to the gynaecology ward, while the newborns continue to receive intensive medical care in the NICU.

Doctors remain optimistic but said the babies will require close observation over the coming days because of their premature birth and low birth weight.

New Delhi, July 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Supreme Court on Thursday held that an uncle-in-law cannot claim to have adopted his niece's husband as a 'ghardamad (resident son-in-law)' for inheritance purposes unless such a custom is proved, setting aside concurrent judgments of three courts in a property dispute involving members of the Oraon tribal community in Jharkhand.

A Bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and N. Kotiswar Singh allowed an appeal filed by Bejla Oraon after holding that the defendants had failed to establish the existence of such a custom and decreed the plaintiff's suit.

The apex court said the burden of proving a custom always lies on the party asserting it and rejected the claim that Ledura Oraon could adopt his niece's husband, Punai Oraon, as a ghardamad to confer inheritance rights over his property.

"It is nowhere established that an uncle-in-law can adopt his niece's husband as his ghardamad within the prevalent customary law," the Justice Karol-led Bench observed.

In its judgment, the top court said that although the custom of a ghardamad acquiring rights in the property of his father-in-law stood proved on the evidence, no material was produced to show that such a practice extended to an uncle-in-law.

"Those who allege a custom must be the one to prove it. Merely observing that the opposite to what has been alleged is not clearly stated, cannot be stated to be sufficient," the Supreme Court observed.

It reiterated that a person relying on a customary practice must not only prove its existence but also establish that he or she is governed by that custom. "He who alleges the custom must prove it. He must also prove that he is in fact governed by said custom," the judgment said, adding that long usage, prevalence and consistent practice must be established through evidence.

The dispute arose over ancestral property belonging to an Oraon family, where the defendants claimed inheritance through Punai Oraon on the basis that he had been accepted as a ghardamad by childless Ledura Oraon.

The plaintiff challenged this claim, contending that no such customary practice existed.

The Supreme Court found that the courts below had accepted the existence of such a custom without any supporting evidence. It also faulted the Jharkhand High Court for framing a substantial question of law on the issue but not deciding it.

"Ordinarily, once a substantial question is framed, the parties have to be heard and issue decided accordingly," the Justice Karol-led Bench said.

Taking a cumulative view of the evidence and the customary law governing the Oraon community, the apex court held that, apart from the recognised custom enabling a ghardamad to inherit from his father-in-law, the remaining customs pleaded by the defendants had not been proved.

"The customs as alleged, apart from the ghardamad's eligibility to get property of his father-in-law, could not be proved," it held, adding that in the absence of a validly established custom, the nearest male agnate would be entitled to inherit the property.

The Supreme Court set aside the judgments of the trial court, the first appellate court and the Jharkhand High Court, decreed the plaintiff's suit and directed that all consequential reliefs should follow, while leaving the parties to bear their own costs.

Kolkata, July 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) Nearly a year after they were allegedly pushed into Bangladesh on suspicion of being infiltrators, Bengali migrant worker Sweety Bibi and four others from Paikar village in Birbhum district returned to India on Wednesday along with her two minor children.

Among those who returned was Danesh Sheikh, the husband of another migrant worker, Sonali Bibi. The family had alleged that they were pushed into Bangladesh from Assam after being detained on suspicion of being illegal infiltrators.

Sonali Bibi had returned to India in December last year. On Wednesday afternoon, her husband, Danesh Sheikh, along with four others, re-entered the country through the Mahadipur border in Malda district, bringing relief to their family members.

According to government officials, Sweety Bibi and Sonali Bibi had been living in Delhi with their families for work. In June last year, they were allegedly detained by the Delhi Police on suspicion of being illegal infiltrators and were subsequently pushed into Bangladesh through the Assam border.

They were imprisoned in Bangladesh for some time before legal proceedings were initiated through the Calcutta High Court and later pursued before the Supreme Court.

Following the legal battle, Sonali Bibi returned to India in December last year. Nearly a year later, Sweety Bibi, her two minor children and Danesh Sheikh have also returned.

The families alleged that Sweety Bibi and Sonali Bibi were pushed into Bangladesh despite being Indian citizens. They said the prolonged legal battle before the Supreme Court ultimately enabled Sweety Bibi and Danesh Sheikh to return home.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam wrote on social media, "The end of the long legal battle, the joy of returning to the country. The victory of truth, the victory of justice! The tears in the eyes of those helpless people of Birbhum today are of relief, of the joy of returning to their homeland."

He also wrote, "On May 22, the country's highest court ordered the immediate return of those people stuck in Bangladesh. Although that order took some time to take effect, justice has finally triumphed today."

Kolkata, July 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) A mentally challenged man, who inadvertently crossed the international border with Bangladesh, and was suspected to be a spy, is now awaiting expatriation to India and reunification with his family in the Malda district of West Bengal, government officials said on Wednesday.

Amateur radio operators from Bangladesh and India have approached authorities to help in the process.

The 66-year-old man was rescued from next to a highway in the Rangpur district of Bangladesh on March 10, 2025.

HAMs from Bangladesh took charge, cleaned him up, provided fresh clothes and contacted their contacts in the West Bengal Radio Club (WBRC), an organisation that uses the amateur radio network to reunite lost people with their families.

Trouble started soon after that with reports getting circulated in Bangladeshi social media that the man is an Indian spy in the garb of a mentally challenged person.

Authorities took notice and the HAMs from Bangladesh provided all assistance to establish that he was not associated with espionage in any way.

The process took nearly four months and he was finally exonerated of the charges.

"It was clear that he is an Indian, but he could not provide any details about his family. We got his photographs and details circulated all across the country. Finally, a family in West Bengal's Malda identified him," Ambarish Nag Biswas, WBRC Secretary, said.

A youth from Chanchal in Malda, named Bikram Rishi got in touch with the organisation and said that the man was his uncle.

The elderly man has been identified as Tinkari Rishi.

According to Bikram, his uncle suffered from sort of mental disease and disappeared from their house in Ghoshpara nearly five years ago.

Despite all efforts, he could not be traced.

Bikram also provided photocopies of the man's Aadhaar Card and Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) that have been forwarded to authorities in Bangladesh for scrutiny.

"He is now being taken care of Jainul Abedin, an amateur radio operator from Bangladesh. Tinkari now stays at the Pirgacha railway station in Rangpur and receives food and other supplies. We have approached the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata to make arrangements for his expatriation. We hope he will be reunited with his family soon," Nag Biswas said.

A source in the Deputy High Commission confirmed that they have received the request and visited Dhaka for processing.

Chennai, July 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) Consumers across Tamil Nadu will have to pay more for milk and curd from Thursday, with private dairy companies set to increase retail prices by Rs 4 per litre from July 9.

The latest revision will be the second price hike by private dairies this year and comes amid rising procurement costs and a worsening shortage of raw milk.

The Tamil Nadu Milk Agents and Workers Welfare Association criticised the proposed increase but said the dairy sector was facing an unprecedented supply crisis due to declining milk production in several southern States.

According to the association, the failure of the summer rains has adversely affected milk production in Tamil Nadu, while output has also fallen in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The shortage has intensified competition among private dairy companies to procure milk from farmers, forcing them to offer higher procurement prices and additional incentives.

The association alleged that many dairy farmers who had earlier supplied milk to the State-run Aavin had shifted to private companies because of the better prices being offered.

It claimed that Aavin’s daily milk procurement had fallen to around 25 lakh litres during the previous administration and was yet to recover to earlier levels, further tightening supplies in the market.

The organisation urged the Tamil Nadu government to introduce a scheme to provide free milch cows to farmers, arguing that such a measure would help increase milk production, improve rural incomes and stabilise the State’s milk supply in the long term.

Private dairy companies had earlier raised the retail prices of milk and curd by Rs 2 per litre in February, citing higher procurement costs. The association said the latest Rs 4 increase was necessitated by a further rise in input costs, including transportation expenses and the prices of packaging materials and other raw materials used in dairy production.

It also linked the increase in logistics costs to higher international crude oil prices following the conflict in West Asia.

One of the State’s leading private dairy brands, Arokya Milk, has informed its distributors and agents that the revised prices will come into effect from Thursday.

Industry observers expect other private dairy companies operating in Tamil Nadu to follow suit, adding to the financial burden on consumers.

The Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station currently handles an average daily passenger footfall of around 7,500. At present, 66 Up and 66 Down trains halt at the station, including two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains, one Humsafar Express, one Garib Rath Express, and several Mail, Express and passenger trains.

The station is exclusively dedicated to passenger services and does not handle any goods traffic.

During the inspection, Minister Ravneet Singh reviewed the passenger amenities and ongoing arrangements and expressed satisfaction with the quality of the redevelopment works.

He emphasised that the upgraded station will significantly enhance passenger convenience and stand as a symbol of Indian Railways' commitment to providing modern, safe, accessible and world-class infrastructure while celebrating Punjab's cultural identity.

Mumbai, July 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) Incessant rainfall over the past week has severely disrupted normal life across Maharashtra, triggering flood-like situations in several districts. Rivers, streams, and local water bodies are overflowing, cutting off connectivity and submerging low-lying areas. While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintains active alerts for multiple regions, weather experts have indicated that the monsoon's intensity is expected to recede starting Wednesday, leaving light to moderate showers confined primarily to the Konkan coast and the ghat (mountainous) regions.

Despite indications of a weakening monsoon system, the IMD has issued alerts for several parts of the state due to localised vulnerabilities. The coastal districts of Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri remain under a yellow alert, with forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated spots.

After a brief overnight battering that caused severe waterlogging in areas like Worli Village, Mumbai saw a temporary reprieve in the morning. Road transit remains operational, though suburban railway networks reported minor disruptions -- Central Line trains are running 5 minutes late, while Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines face delays of up to 10 minutes. Moderate rain is expected throughout the day, the IMD said.

Extreme caution has been advised for the ghat regions of Pune and Satara, where very heavy downpours continue. In contrast, Pune city is expected to experience only light to moderate showers. The districts of Kolhapur (ghat areas under yellow alert), Sangli, Solapur, and Satara are projected to receive light rain.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are highly likely in Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, and Wardha. Moderate spells will persist across Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, and Nashik. The Nashik ghat areas remain under a yellow alert.

Officials noted that a severe cloudburst threat initially loomed over Nashik, but the dense cloud mass diverted toward Palghar and Gujarat, mitigating catastrophic damage. The continuous deluge over the past five days has dramatically altered the state's water reservoir levels, shifting the focus toward flood management.

Relentless rain in the catchment areas has rapidly filled Pune’s key water systems. The Khadakwasla Dam has reached maximum capacity, prompting authorities to release water into the Mutha River at a massive rate of 27,000 cusecs (surging from an earlier discharge of 22,880 cusecs). Consequently, Pune’s low-lying Baba Bhide Bridge has been completely submerged.

Floodwaters have breached residential zones, entering houses in the Ekta Nagar Society. Local administration teams are executing relief operations, and Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has been personally inspecting vulnerable pockets like Rajput Nagar, Pulachiwadi, and Nimbanagar since dawn to coordinate evacuations. Collectively, the four dams in the Khadakwasla circle hold 14 TMC of water, accounting for roughly 48 per cent of their cumulative storage capacity.

In Alandi, a major pilgrimage site, the Indrayani River has breached its banks. All four primary bridges spanning the river are submerged under floodwaters, paralysing local transport and causing significant structural and property damage in adjacent neighbourhoods.

While western parts of the state drown, the Marathwada region is still waiting for definitive relief. The crucial Jayakwadi Dam logged a fresh inflow of 1,493 cusecs over the last 24 hours, bringing its useful water stock to 28.24 per cent. Despite the inflow, this is significantly lower than the 49.65 per cent storage recorded on the same date last year, emphasising Marathwada's ongoing struggle with an uneven monsoon distribution.

Intermittent disruptions continue to plague the state's transport networks. In the Varandha Ghat section, a massive landslide occurred while clearance operations for a previous debris fall were actively underway. A team of highway officials and labourers narrowly escaped a fatal accident as a fresh patch of the hillside gave way. Work was temporarily halted to evaluate structural stability before being resumed under strict safety guidelines.

In Eastern Maharashtra, a dry June had left the agrarian community on the brink of distress due to El Niño anxieties. However, after a brief two-day lull, intense evening showers lashed the Bhandara district, including the Tumsar taluka. The fresh precipitation has restored agricultural operations, allowing local farmers to fast-track delayed paddy transplantation.
