Washington, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The number of students from India seeking first-year undergraduate admission to US colleges through the Common Application fell 15 per cent during the 2025–26 admissions cycle, reversing years of rapid growth.

India recorded 14,424 applicants, down from about 16,900 during the previous cycle, according to Common App's end-of-season report released on August 20.

The decline was sharper than the two per cent fall recorded for China, which remained the largest source of international applicants on the platform with 18,435 students.

China now has 4,011 more international applicants than India. The gap had narrowed to about 1,000 during the 2023–24 admissions cycle after years of strong growth from India and a prolonged decline from China.

Common App did not identify a reason for the fall in Indian applications.

International applicants overall fell 10 per cent from the previous year. Applicants from Asia, the largest source region outside the United States, declined 11 per cent to 79,287.

The report said the Asian decline was driven by the 15 per cent reduction in applicants from India.

The change stands in contrast to the broader Common App pool. A total of 1,527,328 first-year applicants used the platform during the cycle, two per cent more than in 2024–25.

Those students submitted about 10.79 million applications to 1,146 member institutions. Total applications rose six per cent, indicating that students applied to more colleges even though the overall applicant count grew more slowly.

Each applicant submitted an average of 7.06 applications, up from 6.79 during the previous cycle.

India's latest decline followed almost a decade of expansion.

Common App recorded about 7,900 first-year international applicants from India in 2016–17, compared with nearly 29,700 from China.

The Indian number rose gradually before accelerating to about 16,900 in 2021–22. It remained near that level for the next three cycles, bringing India close to overtaking China as the leading international source country on the platform.

The fall to 14,424 erased a significant part of those recent gains. China, meanwhile, declined from nearly 29,700 applicants in 2016–17 to 18,435 in the latest cycle.

A different pattern emerged among applicants already living in the United States. The number of domestic applicants identifying with an Indian background rose six per cent to 40,949.

That figure has more than doubled from nearly 18,500 in 2016–17. Domestic applicants reporting a Chinese background increased one per cent to 26,296 during the latest cycle.

The divergence means the number of US-based applicants identifying as Indian continued to grow even as applications from students residing in India declined.

The Common App report covers applicants to its member institutions and does not represent every undergraduate applicant or university in the United States.

India remains the largest source of international students in the United States. The latest available Open Doors data counted 363,019 students from India during the 2024–25 academic year, an increase of 10 per cent from the previous year.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) India has extended 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance to Nepal to support relief operations after devastating floods struck the Himalayan nation.

India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, formally handed over the aid consignment to Nepal’s Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Khadak Raj Paudel.

The assistance includes essential relief materials to help communities affected by widespread flooding and landslides.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India stands firmly with Nepal and remains committed to extending all possible support.

“Standing by Nepal, always,” he posted on X, highlighting the close bilateral ties and India’s readiness to assist its neighbour in times of crisis.

The floods in Nepal, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, homes and agricultural land, displacing thousands of families.

Rescue and relief operations are ongoing across several provinces, with local authorities struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster.

India’s assistance comes as part of its longstanding policy of “Neighbourhood First,” under which New Delhi has consistently provided humanitarian aid to neighbouring countries during emergencies.

In past years, India has dispatched relief materials, medical teams and reconstruction support to Nepal following natural disasters, including the 2015 earthquake and subsequent flood events.

Officials said the latest aid package underscores India’s commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian cooperation.

The relief materials are expected to bolster Nepal’s immediate response capacity and provide temporary relief to flood‑affected communities.

India and Nepal share deep cultural, historical and economic ties, and disaster relief cooperation has been a recurring feature of their bilateral relationship.

Washington, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Meta has reached a nearly $18 billion agreement with a bipartisan group of 52 US Attorneys General that would impose daily time limits and overnight restrictions on teenagers using Instagram and Facebook.

The agreement, announced on Wednesday, is subject to judicial approval. Most of its provisions would remain in force for 10 years across participating US states and territories.

Under the plan, users under 18 years would face a default two-hour daily limit across Instagram and Facebook. Teenagers could disable the restriction only with parental permission. Time spent across multiple accounts would count towards the combined limit.

Meta would also block teenagers from accessing the apps between midnight and 6 a.m.

Notifications would be muted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., except for direct messages and account security or safety alerts.

Teenagers would receive prompts after every 15 minutes of continuous use and further notices after their total daily usage reaches 60 and 90 minutes. Direct messaging would remain available during the time, night and school restrictions.

The agreement would also allow teenagers to choose a non-algorithmic feed and turn off autoplay. Like and reaction counts would be hidden by default. Meta would block cosmetic surgery and extreme makeup filters for teenagers.

Meta said parents would receive information when a teenager links a secondary account or interacts with an account considered potentially suspicious. They would also get periodic usage updates and notices about attempted changes to protective settings.

Meta called on TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar restrictions, saying that teenagers frequently move between platforms.

"Because teens move fluidly across dozens of apps, we need an industry-wide solution," Meta Chief Legal Officer C.J. Mahoney said.

"We therefore call on our industry peers, TikTok and YouTube, to implement this new framework, right away."

The agreement calls for a nearly $18 billion payment over 10 years.

Participating states would receive about $12.7 billion. The money could support youth online safety programmes and other state priorities.

The remaining nearly $5.3 billion would be released only if TikTok and YouTube introduce a one-hour daily limit, night restrictions and age-assurance measures, and each company makes a matching payment linked to that portion of the funds.

Meta said it expected to record a nearly $10 billion legal expense in the third quarter of 2026. The charge was not included in the expense range issued during its second-quarter earnings call.

If TikTok and YouTube join the framework, Meta's daily limit would fall to one hour per app and its overnight block would expand from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The time-limit and night-mode commitments would also be extended from five years to 10 years.

Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Facebook was launched in 2004, while Meta later expanded its social-media business through the acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp.

Ahmedabad, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Ahmedabad Customs officials seized nearly 300 grams of concealed gold jewellery worth Rs 49.23 lakh from passengers arriving on three international flights at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, following passenger profiling by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU).

According to Customs, three separate cases were detected involving passengers arriving from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Kuwait.

The seizures together amounted to 299.490 grams of gold jewellery, comprising 240.090 grams of 24-carat gold and 59.400 grams of 22-carat gold, with a combined market value of Rs 49,23,602.

In the first case, a woman arriving from Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways flight EY-246 was intercepted by AIU officers. Examination revealed two concealed gold chains weighing 100.060 grams and made of 24-carat gold.

The jewellery was valued at Rs 16,72,003 and was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

In the second case, a couple arriving from Sharjah on Air Arabia flight G9-418 was intercepted. Officers found four gold bangles and two gold chains weighing 140.030 grams in total.

The jewellery was of 24-carat purity and had a market value of Rs 23,41,739. It was seized under the Customs Act.

In the third case, a woman arriving from Kuwait on Kuwait Airways flight KU-347 was intercepted.

She was found carrying one gold necklace, two earrings, one ring and a chain with a pendant, weighing 59.400 grams. The jewellery was of 22-carat purity and was valued at Rs 9,09,860.

Customs said the interceptions were carried out based on passenger profiling, with officers examining the passengers after they arrived at the airport.

The seizures come two days after Ahmedabad Customs intercepted a woman arriving from Sharjah with a 499.540-gram, 24-carat gold chain allegedly concealed inside her high-neck sweater. That seizure was also made following passenger profiling by the AIU.

Further investigation into the latest cases is under way.

Shillong, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Meghalaya Cabinet on Wednesday approved a series of measures to strengthen disaster response, streamline recruitment and expand enforcement of the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said thunderstorms and strong winds would now be formally recognised as state or local disasters, allowing damage caused by such weather events to be assessed and addressed under the State’s disaster management framework.

“Earlier, the cyclone was notified as a state disaster. But we are increasingly seeing damage caused by strong winds which are not of cyclone intensity,” Sangma said after the Cabinet meeting.

He explained that the earlier classification created difficulties for officials as destructive winds that did not meet cyclone criteria had to be assessed under the cyclone category.

“To bring clarity, we have included thunderstorms and strong winds in the list,” he added.

In another major decision, the Cabinet approved removing interviews for Group‑C non‑technical posts recruited through District Selection Committees (DSCs), with the new system coming into effect from January 1, 2027. The move follows the government’s earlier decision to scrap interviews for Group‑D DSC posts.

Interviews will, however, continue for Group‑C technical posts, with the Personnel Department to specify the posts covered under the technical category.

Sangma said the government would take three to four months to amend the relevant service rules. Recruitment advertisements issued from January 1, 2027, for Group‑C non‑technical posts will not contain an interview component.

The Cabinet also approved a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all DSCs to ensure uniformity and transparency in recruitment. The State will train Deputy Commissioners and other officials to implement it, with the framework eventually proposed for other recruitment bodies.

On the MRSSA, Sangma said the State was pursuing clearance for the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill, 2020, with discussions underway with the Union Home Minister and Home Secretary.

At the same time, enforcement of the existing MRSSA, 2016 is being expanded through registration involving Rangbah Shnongs and locality headmen.

The government is also developing a mobile‑based facial recognition system to facilitate registration across Meghalaya’s nearly 6,500 villages and localities. Work is also underway to operationalise tourist facilitation centres envisaged under the 2016 Act.

Hyderabad, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Wednesday emphasised the need to attract investors through extensive domestic and international roadshows ahead of the “Telangana Rising Global Summit 2.0,” scheduled for December.

Chairing a cabinet sub‑committee meeting at Mahatma Phule Praja Bhavan, Vikramarka directed officials to set up a special war room at Praja Bhavan to facilitate preparations for the summit.

He instructed officials to expedite invitation letters to guests for the Invest Telangana Summit. He suggested that the Chief Secretary ensure robust supervision of the war room under a senior official.

Ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Chief Secretary Sanjai Jaju and other senior officials participated in the meeting. Vikramarka said the committees formed for the summit should include the necessary experts and key officials.

He emphasised that the Chief Secretary should dedicate at least one hour daily to review progress and that every committee must complete its responsibilities according to set timelines.

The Deputy CM also directed a specific committee to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the current progress of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed during last year’s summit.

The three‑day summit, themed “Invest Telangana,” will be held on December 7, 8 and 9. It aims to showcase opportunities for industry and investment in the state, particularly in the defence, aerospace, and pharmaceutical sectors.

The Cabinet on August 14 decided to hold the summit on a larger scale than the first summit held last year, where the “Telangana Rising 2047” vision was unveiled. This time, the government will unveil its “Future City” plan during the summit.

The event will feature exhibitions and stalls showcasing the achievements of Telangana startups and industries across various sectors, as well as innovations.

Kathmandu, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The death toll from a massive flash flood in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi River reached 95 by Wednesday evening, as the country witnessed widespread loss of life and damage to infrastructure, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The bodies were recovered from the flood-affected areas by 7 pm, while authorities were yet to complete the identification of the victims.

The massive flood, originating in the Tibetan region of China, swept through the transboundary Bhote Koshi River, leaving a trail of destruction in Nepal.

The Nepali government said 44 Nepal Army personnel, 28 police personnel deployed at various police posts, and 13 Armed Police Force (APF) personnel working in the affected areas remained out of contact.

Likewise, 391 foreign tourists and 93 Nepali tourists remained out of contact following the disaster, the PMO said.

In addition, 60 employees working at various hydropower projects in the affected areas were reported to be out of contact. Some employees of the Rasuwagadhi Customs Office and Immigration Office were also among those unaccounted for.

The massive flood, which struck the Bhote Koshi River in the morning, also caused extensive damage to transport infrastructure. At least 19 motorable bridges and 40 km of paved roads have been damaged, the government said.

Authorities are continuing to collect details of the human and physical losses caused by the disaster.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the government immediately mobilised security agencies and other concerned bodies for search, rescue and relief operations following the flooding.

At around 9 am, authorities placed areas along the riverbanks on high alert and urged residents to remain in safe locations and avoid going near the river.

The flood has caused significant damage in the Nepal-China border region, particularly in Rasuwa, where several government offices, security installations, hydropower facilities and other infrastructure have been affected, the PMO said.

Jaipur, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) In a major crackdown on interstate drug smuggling, Sawai Madhopur Police has busted a suspected smack‑smuggling syndicate and arrested two alleged smugglers with 153.34 grams of illegal smack.

The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around Rs 3 crore in the international market.

Ranwajna Dungar Police carried out the operation under the direction of Sawai Madhopur Superintendent of Police Jyestha Maitreyi and the leadership of Station House Officer Shyamsundar, based on intelligence inputs from the Jaipur Range Cyber Cell.

Police said they had received information that a pickup vehicle travelling from Kota towards Kustla Toll Plaza on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway was allegedly carrying drugs. They also learnt that a Swift Dzire travelling from Lalsot would arrive to collect the consignment and that the exchange would take place on the expressway.

Acting on the tip‑off, the police team reached the location and found the Swift Dzire and pickup vehicle standing face‑to‑face. Police allegedly found Subhash Gurjar, a resident of the Khoyli Police Station area in Karauli and currently residing in Dausa, in the car.

In contrast, Ramniwas Meena, a resident of the Khedi Police Station area in Chhipabarod, Baran, was allegedly found in the pickup.

A search of the vehicles and the accused, conducted as per procedure, led to the recovery of 153.34 grams of smack wrapped in khaki‑coloured tape from Gurjar’s car. During preliminary interrogation, Gurjar allegedly told police that he had received the smack from Meena.

Police said both accused disclosed that they had been involved in smuggling smack for a considerable period and supplying it in areas including Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Dausa, Jaipur and the NCR. Buyers would further sell the drug in smaller quantities, generating substantial profits.

Police are continuing to interrogate the two accused and gathering information about other alleged members of the network, including suppliers and buyers. Personnel from Ranwajna Dungar Police Station, DST Sawai Madhopur and the Jaipur Range Cyber Cell played a key role in the operation. ASI Ratandeep and Head Constables Rakesh, Roshan and Jitendra Kumar were among those involved.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Keeping up with its status as the first responder in disasters, India on Wednesday dispatched 10 tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) materials and essential medicines to Nepal in the wake of devastating flash floods in the Himalayan nation.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced the dispatch of the relief material.

"Dispatched 10 tonnes of HADR assistance and essential medicines to support Nepal’s response to the devastating floods", the EAM said in a post on X.

"Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and all those affected. In face of this challenge, India stands with Nepal and its people," he stated.

Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the C130J aircraft is carrying 10 tonnes of material that includes emergency items such as temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, and medicines.

This comes hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Nepali counterpart Balendra Shah and offered condolences on the loss of lives due to the flash floods there, while expressing India's readiness to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal.

"Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal. The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time," PM Modi posted on X.

"India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal. Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts," he added.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Nepal Embassy here said: "Given the scale of this tragedy and the number of people who remain unaccounted for, including foreign nationals from several countries, our immediate priority is search and rescue, saving lives and providing assistance to those affected."

"We are making every effort to locate and assist everyone affected, while working to verify the situation," it added.

The embassy said that further updates will follow as search and rescue operations continue in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Several people are feared dead, and hundreds of others remain missing following the massive flash floods in the Bhote Koshi River that hit Nepal's Rasuwa on Wednesday.

Mumbai , Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Zerodha, India's largest broking firm by revenue, reported broadly flat revenue and net profit in FY26 as regulatory changes affecting the futures and options (F&O) segment weighed on trading volumes and growth.

According to a blog post by Zerodha co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath, the company generated around Rs 8,500 crore in revenue in FY26, while net profit stood at approximately Rs 4,300 crore. Both figures were broadly similar to the levels reported in FY25.

Zerodha does not disclose its absolute financial numbers publicly and instead presents indicative figures through a bar graph. Kamath said the past two years had been challenging for the brokerage industry as regulatory changes reduced revenue opportunities, while market activity also moderated after the Indian equity market peaked in September 2024.

"The last couple of years have been mixed for brokers. We had to take revenue hits because of regulatory changes, and then the Indian market peaked in September 2024. Volumes steadily declined after that, and growth has been muted," Kamath said.

Zerodha's performance comes against the backdrop of several regulatory changes affecting options trading, which remains a key source of revenue for discount brokers. Kamath had warned last year that FY26 could be weaker than FY25 following an increase in the securities transaction tax (STT) on options and the reduction in the number of weekly options expiries.

Despite the challenging operating environment, Kamath said Zerodha's relatively lean structure has continued to be an advantage for the company. He noted that keeping the organisation small over the past decade, despite its rapid growth, has enabled the brokerage to move quickly and make changes to its products and services.

Artificial intelligence has further strengthened that ability, Kamath said, allowing Zerodha to iterate more rapidly on products and ideas. He added that the company's services for non-resident Indian (NRI) customers have improved significantly, while substantial work is also underway to expand its US investing offering.

Zerodha's flat financial performance contrasts with the stronger growth reported by publicly listed rivals such as Groww and Angel One, which recorded significant increases in revenue and earnings. However, their overall financial scale remains smaller compared with Zerodha.

"The devastation caused by the floods in Nepal is extremely heartbreaking. My condolences are with those families who have lost their loved ones in this disaster," he said.

Further, HM Shah mentioned: "In this hour of crisis, the Government of India stands with Nepal."

This came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with his Nepali counterpart Balendra Shah and offered condolences on the loss of lives due to the flash floods in the Himalayan nation, while also expressing India's readiness to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal.

Moreover, Amit Shah said: "I have spoken with the Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regarding this disaster in Nepal. The NDRF has also been placed on high alert along with the local administrations and relief-rescue teams in the border areas where its impact may be felt."

Bengaluru, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Karnataka School Education and Literacy Minister and In-Charge Minister for Shivamogga Madhu Bangarappa on Wednesday assured farmers in the district's Malenadu region that there is no need for them to worry over the Kasturirangan Committee report, stating that the state government will not allow its implementation.

In a video statement, Bangarappa, noting that the Centre has issued the seventh draft notification proposing the identification of ecologically sensitive areas (ESA) in the Western Ghats based on the recommendations of the Kasturirangan Committee, said that the Karnataka Assembly had already passed a resolution rejecting the report and the decision had been officially communicated to the Centre.

Despite this, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has once again issued a draft notification identifying ecologically sensitive areas in the Western Ghats, he said.

"This is condemnable. The state government cannot accept this draft notification. A clear decision has already been taken on the matter, and Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy has also made an official statement in the Assembly," Bangarappa said.

According to the latest draft notification, 20,668 sq km covering 1,576 villages in Karnataka has been proposed to be classified as ecologically sensitive areas. As many as 484 villages in Shivamogga district are included in the proposed list.

Bangarappa said the inclusion of inhabited areas and agricultural land under the proposed ESA has naturally caused concern among farmers in Malenadu. However, he assured them that the state government would oppose the notification and would not permit its implementation.

"Our government will not allow any action that affects the interests of Malenadu farmers. We stand with farmers, and their interests will be protected," he said.

He said senior Congress leader R.V. Deshpande and legislators Bheemanna T. Naik, T.D. Rajegowda, H.D. Thammaiah and A.S. Ponnanna had raised the issue both inside and outside the Assembly. The government, he added, had clearly stated that it would not allow the report to be implemented.

Bangarappa also criticised Opposition leaders for allegedly creating confusion among farmers instead of condemning the Centre's decision. He accused the Opposition of disrupting the Monsoon Session of the Assembly instead of allowing a discussion on the issue.

He said he had personally discussed the matter with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who had also announced the government's decision to oppose the draft notification and assured that the government would stand with farmers.

"The government will take all necessary steps to protect the interests of Malenadu farmers. Therefore, farmers need not have any apprehension regarding the Kasturirangan report," Bangarappa said.

Recalling his father and former Karnataka Chief Minister S. Bangarappa's commitment to farmers and the common people, he said he was committed to following his father's path.

"My father, former CM late S. Bangarappa, always stood with farmers and the common people. Upholding his ideals is my goal. I am following his path and will not allow farmers to suffer injustice under any circumstances," he said.

Kolkata, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The growing adoption of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) is set to reshape India's real estate sector, industry leaders said at the second edition of Credai TechCon held here on Wednesday.

The event brought together leading technology companies, real estate developers and industry experts from across the country to discuss how AI and emerging technologies can make construction more efficient, modern and consumer-focused.

Credai TechCon Co-Chair Suhel Saraf told IANS that the initiative aims to connect some of the country's leading technology companies with the real estate industry in Kolkata and help developers identify practical solutions for their businesses.

He said the technologies showcased at the event could improve several functions across the real estate value chain, including sales, marketing, construction and project management.

"Real estate has changed significantly over the years. Earlier, developers were typically building smaller projects with 25 to 50 apartments. Today, they are developing large residential projects with thousands of units. Managing projects of this scale while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines requires greater adoption of technology," Saraf said.

He added that the growing size and complexity of residential and mixed-use developments have made technology increasingly important for construction management, quality control and timely project completion.

According to Saraf, technology can help developers deliver projects within stipulated timelines while ensuring better quality for homebuyers. Since purchasing a home is one of the biggest investments in a person's life, he said, developers need to ensure that buyers receive their homes on time and with the promised standards of quality.

"Technology adoption is extremely important because it can improve construction quality, help projects get completed on time and ultimately provide consumers with a better residential experience," he said.

BuildTrack CEO Balbir Singh Khera said AI could play a significant role not only in building construction but also in the operation and maintenance of properties once residents move in.

"The first step is data collection, where information related to the building is gathered. The next step involves analysing that data and establishing a baseline to understand what normal performance looks like and where improvements may be required," Khera told IANS.

Khera said timely identification of operational issues through AI could help property owners take corrective action, reduce operating costs and improve the overall efficiency of buildings.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Meta Platforms has agreed to pay up to $16.68 billion to settle claims brought by US states alleging that Facebook and Instagram were designed to be addictive for children, misled users about platform safety and improperly collected personal data from minors, according to court filings.

The settlement was reached during a federal trial in California involving claims brought by 29 states, bringing an end to one of the most closely watched legal challenges over the impact of social media on children and teenagers.

As part of the agreement, Meta will also introduce changes for teenage users of Facebook and Instagram across the US, including daily usage limits and restrictions on access during nighttime hours. The company, however, denied wrongdoing and liability as part of the settlement.

Meta shares rose 4.4 per cent in pre-market trading following news of the agreement.

The case included allegations that Meta violated consumer protection laws in California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey. The states also alleged that Meta violated the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting personal information from users it knew were children without obtaining parental notification or consent.

The states further alleged that the company used children's data to train machine-learning and generative artificial intelligence models.

Meta has consistently denied the allegations and said it has taken extensive measures to protect young users on its platforms. The company had also argued that it could not have misled consumers by describing its services as addictive because "social media addiction" is not formally recognised as a psychiatric condition.

Before the trial, Meta said the four states were seeking as much as $1.4 trillion in penalties, although the states had indicated that the figure could be closer to $200 billion. They were also seeking additional damages and court orders requiring significant changes to Meta's platforms, including potentially preventing children from creating accounts.

The settlement comes amid a broader legal battle over the impact of social media on youth mental health. Meta, Snap, YouTube parent Alphabet and TikTok parent ByteDance continue to face thousands of lawsuits alleging that their platforms were deliberately designed with features that encourage excessive use among children and teenagers.

Kathmandu, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) More than one and a half dozen people have been confirmed dead after a massive flood originating in the Tibetan region of China swept through the transboundary Bhotekoshi River, leaving a trail of destruction in Nepal, local police confirmed on Wednesday evening.

Nepal Police spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Abi Narayan Kafle said that the bodies of 19 people, who were swept away by the deadly flood, have been recovered by late Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, 28 Nepal Police personnel have remained out of contact since the flood, believed to have been triggered by an ice avalanche, swept through the area, causing widespread destruction in Nepal.

Police said that rescue operations were continuing, along with awareness campaigns targeting people living in districts downstream of the Bhotekoshi River, including along the Trishuli River.

According to local media reports, more than two dozen bank staff have also remained out of contact. Onlinekhabar reported, quoting Nepal Bankers’ Association Chief Executive Officer Anil Sharma, that 26 staff members employed by eight banks remained out of contact.

Meanwhile, the Nepal government said that 114 people had been rescued using helicopters. The government’s spokesperson and Minister for Education and Sports, Sashmit Pokharel, said that 25 injured people rescued and brought to Kathmandu were receiving treatment at various hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley.

An additional 21 people are receiving treatment at a local hospital in Rasuwa district.

Meanwhile, the secretariat of Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle said that India, China and the World Bank had pledged support for the rescue and reconstruction of flood-affected areas in disaster-stricken Nepal.

“Soon after news of the flooding emerged, at around 10:35 a.m., World Bank Country Director for Nepal David Sislen informed Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle that emergency assistance of up to NPR 25 billion could be mobilized from various sources.

“Nepal’s southern neighbour, India, has asked the government to provide a list of essential relief materials urgently needed for flood victims. China has also decided to provide immediate cash assistance,” the secretariat said.

A Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday declared the affected local governments in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts as “disaster crisis-hit areas,” paving the way for the mobilization of both domestic and international assistance.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Wednesday said that it has issued a notice to five-star hotel Andaz Delhi in Aerocity after an inspection uncovered multiple food safety and hygiene violations, including nearly 87 kg of expired sweets.

During the inspection, food safety officials found expired sweets along with an expired cake base and packets of bread. The expired sweets were discarded on the spot, according to the food safety regulator.

"FSSAI has issued notices to Juniper Hotels Pvt Ltd (Andaz,Aerocity, Delhi) and JW Marriott, Delhi following inspections that uncovered serious food safety violations. Regulatory samples were collected, with further action to follow based on compliance and sample analysis," it said.

The inspection also revealed concerns over the handling of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian cutting boards were found immersed together in the same water container, while vegetarian burners in the room-dining kitchen were being used to prepare non-vegetarian food.

Officials further found active cockroaches near freezers, along with houseflies, mosquitoes and spider webs on the premises. The inspection report also flagged poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene among food handlers, improper food storage and insufficient temperature monitoring of food items.

The authorities also detected duplicate date-marking on expired bread packaging and found that supplier verification procedures were inadequate.

Andaz Delhi, operated by Juniper Hotels Pvt Ltd, has been directed to take immediate corrective measures and submit a compliance report along with supporting evidence. FSSAI said further regulatory action would depend on the hotel's compliance and the results of sample analysis.

The action against the hotel comes amid intensified enforcement by FSSAI against food businesses over food safety, misleading claims and labelling violations. Last week, the regulator said it had issued more than 150 notices to food and beverage companies in recent months for misleading advertisements, false claims and violations related to labelling.

FSSAI also said that more than 30 notices had been issued to food-service establishments, including KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's and Costa Coffee. The regulator added that five Domino's licences had been suspended as part of its enforcement action.

Guwahati, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Gauhati High Court has admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Assam's former Leader of Opposition (LoP) and ex-Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia, seeking judicial scrutiny into the factors behind the recent devastating floods.

Saikia said on Wednesday that the court has directed the Assam and Nagaland governments, along with other concerned authorities, to submit detailed counter-affidavits by November 3.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar said that the issues raised in the petition appeared genuine.

The court also noted Saikia's longstanding communication with the Chief Justice Kumar and government authorities over concerns relating to alleged illegal mining and the Dikhow river.

The PIL has raised several issues, including alleged illegal sand and stone mining in the Dikhow riverbed, activities in catchment areas of Nagaland and the possible impact of water releases from upstream dams.

Saikia has claimed that the July floods, which reportedly killed more than 80 people and affected lakhs across Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts, were aggravated by administrative inaction despite earlier warnings and judicial directions.

The petitioner referred to two earlier PILs, filed in 2018 and 2019, concerning alleged illegal and unscientific mining in the Dikhow riverbed, particularly along the Assam-Nagaland border.

According to the former LoP, the High Court issued directions in 2019 and reiterated them in 2022, including measures to curb illegal mining and the formation of a dedicated Mines and Minerals Task Force Battalion.

He has alleged that the directions were not implemented effectively and mining continued.

Saikia also cited a Water Resources Department report dated January 12, 2022, which, he claimed, warned that continued excavation could alter the river's course and create serious consequences.

The PIL has further raised concerns over alleged open-cast coal mining in Nagaland's Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts and the possible effect of water releases from the Doyang Hydro Electric Project on downstream areas of Assam.

The court also sought information on preventive measures undertaken by authorities, referring during the hearing to a media report about Rs 25 crore being spent on embankment construction.

Saikia has sought a permanent halt to illegal riverbed mining, implementation of earlier court directions, a high-powered monitoring committee led by a retired judge, and a scientific assessment of the role of mining and dam releases in the floods.

The matter will next come up after the affidavits are filed on November 3.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ): Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has lost the opportunity to accept Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to visit New Delhi and signal that a Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) government could work with its biggest neighbour, an article in 'The Secretariat' website detailed.

The BNP appeared pragmatic following the election win early this year, but later allowed pro-Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami and the hardliners within the party to dominate the policymaking vis-a-vis India. These radical elements are hell bent on returning to the 2001-06 period which was one of the worst phases in India-Bangladesh ties in the last quarter of a century when the BNP regime under Begum Khaleda Zia pursued an anti-India doctrine, the article by D. Chowdhury observes.

The BNP’s old guard includes certain senior leaders who have been keen to build the party’s ties with India and are aware of the geographical importance of the relationship. Some of these leaders currently hold key ministerial portfolios and are conscious that a repeat of the last BNP rule can sour India-Bangladesh relationship.

They are also aware that making the extradition of ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the main talking point on the agenda can be detrimental to the relationship. These ministers realise that friendly ties with India are essential to bring Bangladesh’s economy back on track amid the worsening energy and power crisis.

Yet, since the re-election of BNP to power, not a single senior minister has been allowed to undertake a visit to India. Bangladesh's current Foreign Minister, a political lightweight, made a stopover in India while on his way to Mauritius. Instead of senior ministers, BNP government advisers with a dubious past have attempted to visit Delhi over the past six months, the article laments.

The radicals may try to undermine and overlook the successes of the Indo-Bangla partnership between 2009-24, but many of the achievements were permanent in nature and have benefited Dhaka. Any pragmatic government in Dhaka should sidestep its ideology and build on the economic achievements.

Connectivity remains a major pillar of bilateral cooperation. Six pre-1965 rail links between the two countries have been restored, including the Agartala-Akhaura rail link inaugurated in November 2023. Three passenger train services - Maitri Express, Bandhan Express, and Mitali Express – that were in operation earlier, however, have remained temporarily suspended since July 2024 due to security considerations, although goods train operations continue, the article points out.

The operationalisation of the Agreement on the use of Chattogram and Mongla Ports is aimed at improving connectivity with India’s North-East. Cooperation in the power and energy sector has become one of the crucial pillars of India- Bangladesh relations. The India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline between both countries for carrying High Speed Diesel from India into Bangladesh was virtually inaugurated in March 2023, which has contributed significantly to addressing Bangladesh's energy security.

Development cooperation has emerged as a key pillar of the bilateral relationship. From modest beginnings in the years after Bangladesh's liberation, India's development cooperation with Bangladesh has grown in size and coverage. With US$ 8 billion in three Lines of Credit (LoC) under implementation, Bangladesh has become India’s largest development partner.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen to continue this trend of assistance to the Tarique Rahman government, provided the regime in Dhaka sees the merit. India’s outreach to its neighbours has never aimed at undermining their sovereignty or territorial integrity.

It is never too late for the current Bangladesh Prime Minister to make a course correction and visit New Delhi at the earliest to continue with the partnership rooted in history, common culture, and tradition, the article concludes.

Tokyo, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday highlighted India's emergence as the world's third-largest startup ecosystem, with nearly 250,000 startups established over the last decade, at the India–Japan Startup Roundtable here, according to an official statement.

The roundtable brought together senior government representatives, investors, industry leaders, and startups from both countries, reaffirming the shared commitment of India and Japan to deepen cooperation in startups, deep technology, innovation and MSMEs. Discussions focused on strengthening technology partnerships, promoting investment and fostering the next phase of innovation-led economic collaboration between the two countries.

Minister Goyal said India’s large domestic market, deep STEM talent pool, digital public infrastructure and rapidly expanding innovation ecosystem make it an attractive destination for Japanese technology, investment, and innovation partnerships.

Welcoming the participants, Ambassador Nagma Mohamed Mallick highlighted the growing startup engagement between the two countries. The India–Japan Pitching Series has already connected 65 Indian startups with around 100 Japanese corporations and facilitated more than 30 business tie-ups. She noted that the participation of a 222-member Indian business delegation provides an opportunity to forge new and enduring partnerships between the two innovation ecosystems.

Goyal proposed a forward-looking framework for the next phase of India–Japan startup cooperation centred on four pillars: a Japan–India Deep-Tech Capital Corridor to mobilise patient capital for early-stage research, deep-tech innovation and commercialisation; a Two-Way Innovation Bridge connecting universities, incubators, R&D institutions, laboratories and testing facilities in both countries; Manufacturing and Technology Integration, combining India’s scale, engineering talent and entrepreneurial dynamism with Japan’s precision engineering, technology and manufacturing capabilities; and Joint Startup Pitching Platforms to facilitate regular interactions between Indian founders, Japanese corporations, venture funds and strategic investors.

The minister also highlighted the Indian government's proposed second Fund of Funds of around $1 billion, with a focus on supporting deep-tech enterprises, and invited greater participation from Japanese investors.

Japanese stakeholders welcomed the growing maturity of India’s startup ecosystem.

JICA Senior Vice President Shohei Hara emphasised the importance of a two-way partnership, noting that Japan can contribute its technological capabilities while learning from India’s ability to convert social and developmental challenges into scalable business opportunities. JICA also expressed its intention to showcase opportunities in the Indian market to a larger number of Japanese startups.

Representatives of around 40 leading Japanese companies, including SPARX Group, MUFG Innovation Partners, Beyond Next Ventures Inc., Incubate Fund Asia, Mizuho Financial Group, SBI Investment, Fujitsu Limited, DG Daiwa Ventures, ASTRO GATE Inc., Incubate Fund, Instalimb Inc., Universal Materials Incubator Co., Ltd., Kyoto Fusioneering Ltd. and Aerosense Inc., also participated in the discussions.

Industry representatives stressed the importance of integrating MSMEs with startups and global supply chains and providing plug-and-play infrastructure to companies seeking to manufacture and expand in India.

Venture capital investors identified AI, semiconductors, healthcare, space, defence, advanced manufacturing and deep technology as major areas for future India–Japan investment. Investors also noted the visible transition of India’s startup ecosystem from predominantly internet and software businesses towards manufacturing- and technology-intensive enterprises.

Indian startups showcased capabilities across aerospace and defence, drones, artificial intelligence, healthcare, prosthetics, robotics, warehouse automation, mobility and digital health. Several companies explored Japanese partnerships for technology validation, precision manufacturing, investment, market access and integration into Japanese and global supply chains, the statement added.

Patna, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Bihar government on Wednesday intensified flood preparedness across districts along the Gandak river following warnings of a possible flash-flood wave in the river's upper catchment area in Nepal.

Preliminary assessments indicate that a flood wave of around three metres could potentially reach the Gandak, prompting authorities to place several districts on high alert.

A high-level review meeting chaired by Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit was held on Wednesday, with District Magistrates, senior police officers and Superintendents of Police from vulnerable districts joining via video conference.

The meeting reviewed the situation in Nepal and its possible impact on Bihar.

The Chief Secretary directed officials to ensure that rescue, evacuation and relief arrangements are completed in advance and that people can be moved to safer locations immediately if river levels rise suddenly.

Special vigilance has been ordered in West Champaran (Bettiah), East Champaran (Motihari), Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur, and Vaishali.

Authorities in Sitamarhi and Sheohar, along with other vulnerable districts, have also been instructed to maintain continuous monitoring.

Officials have been directed to regularly inspect river levels, embankments, low-lying areas, bridges, culverts and other vulnerable infrastructure and immediately report any signs of damage or stress.

The state has begun pre-deploying additional emergency resources.

An NDRF team is being sent to Gopalganj, while another will remain on standby in Muzaffarpur.

Arrangements are also being made to deploy an NDRF team to Bettiah within nearly two hours.

The Sashastra Seema Bal Deputy Inspector General Sanjay Singhal has assured the availability of Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) and other assistance in Bettiah if required.

Districts have also been instructed to keep adequate numbers of boats, relief shelters and community kitchens ready so that evacuation and relief operations can begin without delay.

The Water Resources Department has been directed to ensure safe management of water through the Gandak Barrage and its canal system.

Engineers and other officials have been told to maintain constant vigilance and conduct regular inspections of embankments and critical water infrastructure.

Within the Gandak catchment, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung and Tanahun in Nepal have been identified as high-risk areas.

Dolakha and Sindhupalchok have been classified as high-risk zones in the Kosi catchment, while moderate risks have been forecast in several areas of the Kosi, Bagmati and Gandak catchments.

The Bihar government has emphasised that there is no need for panic, but residents in vulnerable areas should remain alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

District Magistrates have been asked to conduct daily media briefings and monitor social media to counter rumours and misinformation.

Residents have been urged to rely only on official and credible sources for flood-related information.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is likely to travel to the United States towards the end of September to attend the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting, a visit that could assume significance as India and the US work to resolve outstanding issues in their ongoing bilateral trade negotiations.

During the proposed visit, Goyal is also expected to hold talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 meeting, according to the NDTV Profit report.

The meeting could provide an important opportunity for both sides to assess progress and work towards bridging the remaining differences in negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement.

India and the US have been engaged in negotiations aimed at expanding market access, reducing trade barriers and strengthening bilateral economic ties. With discussions entering a crucial phase, the ministerial-level engagement in September could help determine the next steps towards concluding the pact.

The negotiations have covered a range of issues, including tariffs, market access and barriers affecting trade in goods and services. Both countries have been seeking outcomes that address their respective commercial priorities while expanding opportunities for businesses on both sides.

For India, improved access to the large US market remains a key objective, particularly for sectors with substantial export potential. Washington, meanwhile, has been seeking greater access for American goods and services in the Indian market.

Goyal’s expected meeting with Greer could therefore play a key role in addressing the outstanding areas of divergence and assessing whether the two sides are in a position to move closer to a final agreement.

The G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting will additionally provide Goyal with a platform to engage with trade ministers from other major economies and discuss broader issues affecting global commerce.

The proposed September visit comes at a critical juncture for India-US trade relations, with both New Delhi and Washington seeking to make further progress towards finalising a bilateral trade agreement. The outcome of the discussions could offer greater clarity on the timeline and contours of the proposed pact.

Chennai, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) At least 57 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu are stranded in Nepal's flood-hit Rasuwa district, even as rescue teams struggle to reach several areas following a sharp rise in water levels.

More than 400 Indians are reportedly among those trapped in the northern region, where the floods have claimed at least 17 lives.

The stranded Tamil Nadu pilgrims are currently in the Timure area of Rasuwa district. They are reportedly from Chennai, Kumbakonam and other parts of the state and had travelled to Nepal on a pilgrimage.

Meanwhile, 22 pilgrims from Kumbakonam have been rescued and moved to a Nepal Army camp, where they have been provided temporary accommodation and assistance.

Helicopters have been deployed to evacuate people from the affected areas.

However, rescue operations have been hampered by high water levels, damaged roads and adverse weather conditions.

Officials said helicopters were unable to land in some locations, leaving several groups awaiting evacuation.

Tamil Nadu's Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Department is coordinating with the Indian and Nepalese authorities to trace and rescue people from the state.

The Tamil Nadu government has also announced emergency helpline numbers for families seeking information or assistance.

People requiring help in connection with the Nepal floods can contact the toll-free number 1800 309 3793. They can also give a missed call to 80690 09901 or 080690 09900.

Preliminary reports said the floods had washed away around 19 bridges, damaged nearly 40 kilometres of roads and swept away about 200 vehicles.

The extensive damage to transport infrastructure has further complicated efforts to reach stranded residents and tourists.

According to a preliminary assessment released by the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 tourists have been reported missing based on information received from tourism stakeholders and travel agencies.

Of them, 291 are foreign nationals and 93 are Nepalese citizens.

Authorities are verifying the figures, and the number of missing or stranded people could change as communication is restored in remote locations.

Indian officials are also collecting details of tourists and pilgrims who may be in the affected areas.

The Nepal Tourism Board has issued emergency contact numbers for tourists and their families.

The emergency helpline can be reached at '1234', while the emergency hotline is '1144'. The Tourist Police Unit can be contacted at 9851289445.

Srinagar, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Two rape accused, who had escaped from the Central Jail in J&K’s Srinagar, were arrested in Rajasthan on Wednesday, officials said.

Officials said two accused, Farman Khan and Mukhtar Gujjar, were arrested following a tip-off from Srinagar Police. Further investigation is underway.

The two, booked in separate cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, escaped from the Srinagar jail on August 23, after scaling the front-side wall of the high-security prison, officials said.

While Khan is a resident of Sadanpora, Rajasthan, Gujjar is a resident of Sanglan Chittergul in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, officials said.

A massive manhunt was launched to trace and apprehend the escaped inmates, they said, adding that further details regarding the circumstances of their escape from the jail were awaited.

The jail is guarded by personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) who were deployed to provide armed cover to the facility in October 2023 along with the Central Jail in Jammu.

The force is responsible for securing both the inner and outer perimeters of these sensitive facilities through a combination of trained manpower, modern surveillance systems, and access control measures.

According to the officials, Khan was lodged in the Srinagar jail on June 23 in connection with an FIR registered against him at Lar police station in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district under various sections of the BNS and sections 3 and 4 (penetrative sexual assault) of the POCSO Act.

Similarly, Gujar was lodged in jail on April 13 in connection with a separate FIR registered at Srinagar's Soura police station under various sections of the BNS and sections 3 and 4 of the POCSO Act, they said.

The police had issued a wanted notice for the two escapees and also announced a reward for information leading to their arrest.

The police had also urged the public to share any information that could help trace or apprehend the two men by contacting the nearest police station or dialling 112.

The onions being released into the market are from a buffer stock of 1.21 lakh tonnes maintained across producing states for 2026, and the Centre is using its price stabilisation fund to rein in rising onion prices, a senior official said.

The retail intervention will be carried out through Nafed, National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) and Kendriya Bhandar outlets.

NCCF will sell onions directly to consumers through 100 Kendriya Bhandar stores and also plans to extend the sale through Mother Dairy outlets in Delhi-NCR.

NCCF holds a buffer stock of 62,000 tonnes of onion and is transporting 400 tonnes from Nashik in Maharashtra with the "Kanda Express" scheduled to reach Delhi on Thursday.

Nafed, which is maintaining a buffer of less than 55,000 tonnes of onion, will similarly sell onions in Delhi and other centres, including Kochi and Guwahati. The first such rake, carrying 800 tonnes of onions, has already left Nashik and is en route to Delhi.

Besides Delhi, four other centres -- Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai and Guwahati --are set to receive onion supplies through special freight trains being run for the purpose.

Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that the government intends to roll out the scheme in Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, and Raipur in the coming days

Meanwhile, prices of onion in the wholesale market in Nashik and Lasalgaon in Maharashtra started to drop following the government announcing its move to intervene in the market. This has lowered inflationary expectations, which are playing a key role in fuelling the price spiral, a senior official said.

The move comes amid a steep spike in onion prices over the past month. The all-India average retail price rose over 28 per cent to Rs 44.72 per kg on August 25, up from Rs 34.80 per kg a month earlier on July 25. Compared with a year ago, when onions retailed at Rs 28.67 per kg, prices have jumped 56 per cent.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) India’s engineering goods exports continued their strong growth momentum in July 2026, rising 18 per cent year-on-year to $12.24 billion despite geopolitical uncertainties and disruptions along key trade routes in West Asia, according to data released by EEPC India on Wednesday.

Engineering exports stood at $10.40 billion in July 2025. The sector’s growth during the month also outpaced the 17 per cent year-on-year increase recorded in India’s overall merchandise exports.

Engineering goods accounted for 27.7 per cent of the country’s total merchandise exports in July 2026, according to the government’s quick estimates.

The latest figures extend the sector’s strong performance into the first four months of the financial year 2026-27, with monthly engineering exports remaining above the $10 billion mark.

Cumulatively, engineering exports during April-July 2026-27 reached $46.38 billion, compared with $39.24 billion during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 18.21 per cent.

Engineering products accounted for 26.7 per cent of India’s total merchandise exports during the period.

The United States continued to be the largest destination for Indian engineering goods. Engineering exports to the US increased 20 per cent year-on-year in July to $2.18 billion.

During April-July, exports to the US stood at $7.78 billion, registering year-on-year growth of 11.8 per cent.

India also recorded strong growth in engineering exports to China, with shipments rising 32 per cent year-on-year to $349 million in July.

During the April-July period, engineering exports to other major markets, including Germany, the UK and Singapore, also recorded decent to high growth.

However, exports to some destinations faced pressure due to geopolitical and logistical challenges. Engineering shipments to Saudi Arabia declined during the period, with the logistics crisis in and around the Strait of Hormuz affecting trade flows.

According to EEPC India, the impact has been compounded by weaker purchasing activity in Saudi Arabia, where a significant portion of engineering imports is linked to projects that have been affected by the ongoing regional conflict.

The broad-based nature of the export recovery was reflected in the performance of individual engineering product segments. In July, 27 of the 34 engineering panels recorded year-on-year growth.

Seven panels, including iron and steel products, lead and its products, machine tools, aircraft and spacecraft and their parts, cranes, lifts and winches, and office equipment, registered declines.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) While emphasising the critical role of rangelands in sustaining pastoralist communities, conserving biodiversity and regulating water and carbon cycles, at the 17th Conference of Parties (CoP17) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), India referred to the proposed introduction of Cheetahs into the grasslands in Gujarat's Banni.

Banni is located on the northern fringe of the Great Rann of Kutch and has more than 60 species of grass. Its custodians are the Maldharis -- pastoralists spread across 19 panchayats. Their buffaloes and Kankrej cattle have been grazing these grasslands for more than 400 years.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has cleared the shifting of four Cheetahs (two pairs) from Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh to Banni.

An enclosure has already been built there. Prey has also been released there for the Cheetahs.

While addressing the ministerial dialogue on "Restoration of Rangelands and the Well-being of Pastoralist Communities" at the conference being held in Mongolia's Ulaanbaatar, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, highlighted India's experience in restoring grasslands and rangelands through a combination of scientific planning and community participation.

"Successful restoration begins with pastoralists as custodians, not merely beneficiaries," he said, adding that combining traditional knowledge with modern science can deliver restoration that is ecologically sound, economically viable and socially inclusive.

The grasslands in Banni were nearly destroyed due to the introduction of an invasive tree species. It was the Maldharis who took it upon themselves to restore it.

Noting that India's rangelands stretch from Himalayan pastures and Central Indian savannas to the arid Thar, Kachchh regions and Southern sholas, and how they sustain the country's vast livestock and human population, the Union Minister said that satellite-based Desertification and Land Degradation atlases provide a scientific basis for mapping grasslands and planning restoration, while recognition of grazing rights and community forest resource rights strengthens the role of local communities in sustainable management.

Bhupender Yadav cited the example of Orans in Rajasthan. These are the sacred groves revered and protected by local communities for their cultural and ecological significance.

"Around 25,000 such community-protected sacred groves, covering around 0.6 million hectares across the country, exemplify community stewardship while also securing pastoral land rights and conserving critical habitats, including those of the Great Indian Bustard," he told.

Many of these sacred groves are protected under statutory provisions, the Union Minister added.

Bhupender Yadav noted that deep-rooted grasses contribute to soil carbon storage, enhance water infiltration and support groundwater recharge across India's around 10 million hectares of permanent pastures and grazing lands.

As developing countries advance towards Land Degradation Neutrality, the Union Minister called for enhanced access to finance, technology and knowledge, adding that "India welcomes dedicated, accessible financing for rangeland restoration, and stands ready to share its experience and solutions through South-South cooperation".

Islamabad, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday constituted a high-level committee to investigate the deaths of 14 infants at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

At least 14 infants were killed when a fire broke out in the gynecology ward of the hospital early Wednesday morning.

Talking to local media, Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal said the infants in the ward were either in incubators or receiving oxygen support when the incident occurred.

He said the fire broke out at around 6:40 am local time (0140 GMT) following what he described as a "blast in the air conditioner" inside the ward, adding that investigators are looking into the incident.

The hospital administration launched rescue operations, while fire brigade personnel, ambulances and police rushed to the scene. Several children were reportedly rescued from the ward.

Sources said that initially nine children died on the spot, while the others later succumbed to their injuries after being shifted to the children's ward, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to officials of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, the nursery had 16 newborns at the time the fire broke out.

Rescue officials said that the fire was brought under control after firefighting teams reached the hospital and began operations. Teams continued cooling operations at the site after extinguishing the blaze to prevent any possibility of the fire reigniting.

According to the district administration, 14 babies were completely burnt in the fire that broke out on the third floor of the Mother and Child Health (MCH) ward. The administration said rescue personnel responded immediately after receiving information about the incident.

Six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances were deployed as part of the emergency response, the district administration said, Pakistan's leading Geo News Network reported.

The incident has once again raised serious questions about safety arrangements at hospitals in Pakistan, particularly in a ward housing vulnerable newborn children.

Officials said the enquiry will establish the circumstances that led to the deaths of the newborns and examine the response to the emergency.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) In the wake of reports of irregularities in the land registration process in some parts of the state, the Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management (R&DM) department on Wednesday directed District Collectors to regularly monitor and closely oversee the functioning of registration offices under their respective jurisdictions.

The Revenue department in an official statement noted that the state government has been laying emphasis on making the land registration process in the state more transparent, accountable and compliant with rules and regulations.

In a communication to the Collectors, Additional Chief Secretary of the R&DM department, Arabinda Kumar Padhee, said that a serious case of fraud related to land registration had come to light in Nuapada district of the state.

After the issue was brought to the notice of the department, Sarveshwar Jal, who was serving as the Tahasildar of Komna Tahasil in Nuapada district and was also discharging the duties of Sub-Registrar has immediately been placed under suspension by the state government.

The officials also said that preliminary investigation has revealed that the officer, allegedly in connivance with vested interest groups, facilitated the fraudulent registration of a large parcel of land.

Following information received from the Nuapada Collector Madhusudan Dash regarding the matter, the state government immediately suspended the concerned Tahasildar.

"Keeping in view the seriousness of the matter, the department has directed all Collectors to ensure that the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) and District Registrar of their respective districts regularly monitor registration-related activities and maintain strict oversight," the department noted.

This apart, the Collectors have also been directed to conduct surprise visits and inspections of the functioning and activities of registration offices so that such irregularities can be detected and prevented in a timely manner.

"Ensuring transparency and accountability in the registration process through maximum use of technology is the key priority of the state government. Such irregularities will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty, while ensuring due compliance with rules and regulations throughout the entire registration process," the R&DM department asserted.

Karwar (Karnataka), Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Palestine flag was briefly waved during an Eid Milad procession in Ankola town of Karwar district in Karnataka on Wednesday, prompting police to intervene and take the flag into custody.

The incident occurred when a youth participating in the procession suddenly took out the Palestine flag and began displaying and waving it. Police immediately noticed the incident, approached the youth and questioned him about the flag.

The youth reportedly argued with the police, following which the police took the flag into custody. Elders participating in the procession intervened and advised the youth not to argue with the police and asked him to continue with the procession. The procession was subsequently allowed to proceed.

Police have not registered a case in connection with the incident so far. Officials said they would examine the youth's background and assess whether there was any attempt or conspiracy to create communal tension. If any such involvement is established, appropriate legal action will be taken, they said.

Police have also stepped up security arrangements across Karwar district in view of Eid Milad celebrations.

Meanwhile, in a separate development in Chikkamagaluru, a "I Love Mohammad" banner was put up in Tippunagar during Eid Milad celebrations. The banner was placed near a large cut-out of Tipu Sultan, drawing objections from some local residents.

The "I Love Mohammad" campaign had earlier triggered controversy at the national level, with cases being registered in connection with the display of such banners in some places. On Wednesday, posters bearing the slogan were seen along streets through which the Eid procession passed.

The latest incident also comes against the backdrop of an earlier controversy in Chikkamagaluru involving a large Tipu Sultan cut-out and the alleged playing of a Pakistan-related song. A video of the incident was circulated on social media, triggering controversy, following which two people were arrested.

Chikkamagaluru police have since removed the "I Love Mohammad" banners put up in the area and are maintaining heightened vigil in view of the Eid Milad celebrations.

Barring two incidents, Eid Milad processions have remained largely peaceful across the state, with no other untoward incidents reported.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has conveyed wishes of Eid Mubarak to people of the state. "Warm greetings on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi. May this occasion bring peace, happiness, harmony and prosperity," he stated.

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara stated, "Heartfelt Eid Milad-un-Nabi greetings to all Muslim brothers and sisters of the state. I extend my best wishes that the sacred Eid Milad, a symbol of harmony, brings happiness, peace, prosperity, and contentment to everyone."

Surat, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Surat City Cyber Crime Cell on Wednesday arrested two men from Maharashtra in connection with an alleged online investment fraud in which a Surat complainant was duped of Rs 9.58 lakh after being lured through an Instagram advertisement for share-market investments.

According to the police, the accused allegedly used a pre-planned scheme in which potential investors were first approached through advertisements on Instagram and then added to Telegram groups.

The complainant was allegedly sent a link to a fabricated website through the group and persuaded to register and create a Demat account.

Police said the complainant subsequently transferred Rs 9,58,998.98 to different bank accounts provided through the website for share-market investments.

Transactions were shown on the platform as generating profits, and the complainant's Demat account allegedly reflected the invested amount along with returns.

However, when the complainant sought to withdraw the money, the withdrawal was not processed, leading to the alleged online fraud.

A case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station under Sections 318(4), 336(2), 338, 336(3), 340(2), 61(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Amendment Act, 2008.

Following directions from senior officials, Inspector M.C. Nayak and his team conducted a technical investigation to trace those allegedly involved in the case.

The arrested men have been identified as Uddhav alias Ravi Gondhali, 27, a decoration worker, and Gopendra alias Gopu Shinde, 23, a student, both residents of Parbhani district in Maharashtra.

Police alleged that Uddhav had established a firm in his own name and obtained an Udyam Certificate before opening a current account with Bank of India in the firm's name.

Investigators said he handed over the account to Gopendra for a commission of Rs 5,000. The account was allegedly subsequently made available to absconding accused persons in return for a two per cent commission on transactions.

According to the police, transactions totalling Rs 1.47 crore took place in the current account between September 1, 2025 and January 21, 2026.

A check of the account through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP) allegedly revealed 13 complaints registered in different states, involving reported fraud of Rs 40.48 crore.

The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal advises victims of financial cyber fraud to report incidents through the '1930' helpline.

Police have advised people to remain cautious of social media advertisements promising high returns through share-market investments and to verify the credentials of individuals and platforms before making financial transactions.

They have also urged victims of financial cyber fraud to call '1930' immediately, as early reporting can increase the possibility of freezing funds in bank accounts.

The investigation into the case is continuing.

New Delhi, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Widespread death and destruction were reported from Nepal on Wednesday as flash floods in the Bhote Koshi river, originating from Tibet, inundated many areas in districts north of capital Kathmandu.

Reports suggest torrents of water from Tibet surging into Nepal, sweeping away bridges, damaging hydropower plants, and inundating villages.

In India, the Kosi River, long known as the "Sorrow of Bihar", is swelling dangerously, threatening millions of lives and livelihoods.

Similarly, the mighty Brahmaputra River, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet, once again overflowed the banks this monsoon, killing at least 50 and displacing some seven lakh people in Assam.

Studies suggest that China's aggressive dam-building programme in Tibet and downstream regions is creating a dangerous mix of ecological fragility, geopolitical tension, and human vulnerability.

It has already built several large dams in Tibet, including the Zangmu Dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo, completed in 2015, and the Jiexu and Jiacha dams, which followed soon after.

These dams are part of a broader hydropower push to harness rivers for energy security.

More controversially, Beijing has announced plans for a super dam at Medog County, near the Great Bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo, where the river makes a dramatic U-turn before entering India.

However, much of the details of this mega dam project is still under wraps.

What is known is that it could generate three times the power of the Three Gorges Dam, but its scale raises serious concerns about seismic safety and flood management.

Planned to be the world's largest hydropower project, with a proposed capacity of 60,000 MW, the Medog (Motuo) Dam is estimated to cost some 1 trillion Yen, or around $148 billion.

The Medog Dam has been studied extensively by international think-tanks, research centres, and Chinese scientists themselves.

These studies reveal a project that is as much about geopolitics and frontier consolidation as it is about energy security, and one whose risks may outweigh promised benefits.

The Medog Dam would dwarf the Three Gorges Dam located on the Yangtze river in Hubei Province, which is now the world's largest hydroelectric power station by installed capacity, producing more than 22,500 MW.

Completed in 2012 after nearly two decades of construction, it spans more than 2 km and rises 185 metres high.

While it stands as a symbol of China's engineering ambition, the project remains controversial for the social and environmental costs it has allegedly imposed.

But the Medog Dam additionally sits in one of the world's most seismically active zones.

The risks are not confined to Tibet; sudden releases or failures could devastate downstream regions in India and Bangladesh, while altered sediment flows threaten agriculture and ecosystems across the Gangetic plains.

'The Medog Imperative', a 2026 report from the Institute for Security and Development Policy (ISDP), a Stockholm-based non-profit research and policy organisation, warned of its seismic volatility.

"Recall the January 2025 earthquake on the Tibetan Plateau that caused massive damage to human life, ecology, and security. Combined with the political sensitivities surrounding Tibet and China's upper-riparian status, the project raises a series of questions that cannot remain outside the purview of global climate governance, especially the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)," it warned.

The report claimed that hydrologists, environmental researchers, and geologists have expressed unease regarding the project's feasibility and safety, adding that this region sits along the collision boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The Yarlung Tsangpo river flows from Tibet into India as the Brahmaputra and into Bangladesh as the Jamuna, raising concerns in these countries about water security, stressed a New York Times report last year.

"The Tibetan plateau was formed by a collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates millions of years ago. To this day, the Indian plate is still slowly moving toward the Eurasian one, which is why the Himalayas are regularly hit by earthquakes," it noted.

Warning that "Such seismic events threaten the safety of dams", it echoed the ISDP report, claiming that Chinese officials said that cracks appeared on five hydropower dams in Tibet after a magnitude 7.1-earthquake struck near the city of Shigatse early 2025, killing more than 120 people.

"Even if the Motuo dam is built well enough to withstand an earthquake, the landslides and mudflows resulting from quakes are difficult to contain and can kill people living nearby. Experts say the massive excavation involved in dam construction could make such disasters more likely," it said.

Separate reports, quoting Chinese hydrology and geology journals, such as Shuili Xuebao (Journal of Hydraulic Engineering) and Dizhi Kexue (Geological Science), examining the engineering feasibility of the Medog project highlighted challenges of tunneling through permafrost, managing unstable sediment, and mitigating seismic risks.

A study by researchers at the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) assessed the potential for reservoir-induced seismicity, also reportedly noted that the Medog site lies at the collision boundary of the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Amid global changes, such man-made structures are adding to concerns.

Some experts suggest a shift toward climate-resilient water management, with smaller, adaptive projects, robust early-warning systems, and transparent data sharing.

Kolkata, Aug 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) One person has been arrested in connection with the robbery of Rs 1.3 crore at a mattress store in Kolkata last week, police said on Wednesday. According to investigators, a gang from Rajasthan is behind the incident.

A hawala businessman named Lalit Mundra was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the robbery. After reviewing CCTV footage, police arrested him in Salkia, Howrah district. Officials said Mundra acted as the “tipper” for the robbers and had called them from Rajasthan.

The Kolkata Police team is now heading to Bikaner, Rajasthan, in search of the robbers. At the same time, three employees of the mattress shop went missing after the robbery. Based on this information, police uncovered further details suggesting that similar robberies had taken place at other shops owned by the mattress business owner in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Complaints of robberies worth several crores of rupees have been filed in those states. Another office of the same mattress owner in Kolkata’s Survey Park was also looted last May. Police are probing whether the owner’s acquaintances are repeatedly involved in the robberies.

Police said that last Wednesday, three robbers entered the mattress shop on Cotton Street in Kolkata’s Posta area. With towels tied around their faces, they brandished revolvers and robbed employees of Rs 1.3 crore before fleeing. CCTV footage showed a man leading the robbers to the shop.

During the robbery, he was seen sitting in a nearby shop, drinking tea and making phone calls. Moments later, the robbers left the shop, and he followed them.

From this evidence, police identified him as Lalit Mundra, a hawala operator. On Tuesday, police raided his house in Salkia but found him missing. They then rushed to Howrah station, where it was discovered that he had boarded a Gujarat‑bound train. He was arrested twenty minutes before the train’s departure.

During interrogation, Mundra claimed that the Rs 1.3 crore belonged to hawala. Police said the robbers fled from Howrah station to Madhya Pradesh after the robbery. Although their homes are in Bikaner, investigators said they will conduct searches in Rajasthan based on the information received.
