New Delhi, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) With temperatures soaring in different parts of the country, Dr. Anubhuti Rana, associate professor from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, said that heatwave is a serious situation for pregnant women. She urged the expectant mothers to take special precautions during the prevailing weather conditions.

Speaking to IANS, Dr. Rana said: "Pregnancy is anyway a special condition for women where there is an increased demand for the mother and the baby."

"Heatwave can cause exhaustion and dehydration, which affects both the mother and the foetus," she added.

Advising special care for pregnant women during the heatwave, she said: "They should drink a lot of water, coconut water and 'shikanji'. Take frequent rests and eat good, fresh food."

She also advised the intake of salt and lemon with water during this weather.

Moreover, Dr. Rana mentioned that pregnant women should absolutely refrain from venturing out during peak sunlight hours i.e. from 12 to 4 p.m.

She added: "At home pregnant women should opt for soft and loose clothes, amid this ongoing heatwave."

The doctor said that such precautions are manageable.

Previously, Dr. Piyush Ranjan, Additional Professor in the Department of Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, said that cases of dehydration and heatstroke tend to rise sharply whenever temperatures increase.

He warned that dehydration can progress to heat stroke, commonly known as 'loo lagna', and in severe situations, patients may even lose consciousness.

Dr. Neeraj Nishchal, Professor in the Department of Medicine, said plain water alone may not be sufficient during extreme heat conditions because the body loses salts through sweating.

"It is important to understand that drinking only plain water is not enough, because during extreme heat, the body loses not just water but also salt through sweating. Therefore, ORS solutions or electrolytes are considered more beneficial," he added.

Meanwhile, Gujarat also has been witnessing intense heat, with temperatures reaching 43.3 degrees Celsius in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Surendranagar witnessed maximum temperature at 43.8 degrees Celsius.

The Weather department said temperatures are likely to remain steady over the next week, though light to moderate rain may occur in some isolated districts.

"There is a forecast of rain in isolated places of Gujarat and Saurashtra," a Weather department official said.

Srinagar, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday announced summer vacation for schools in Jammu division due to the prevailing heatwave conditions in the region, officials said.

Sakina Itoo, Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister on social media platform X said, "Keeping in view the prevailing weather conditions, summer vacations for schools falling under Summer Zone of Jammu Division shall commence with effect from June 1 for Primary Classes and with effect from June 8 for students of Classes 6 to 12. Wishing all students a safe and enjoyable vacation."

The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Monday issued a heatwave advisory for people as temperatures in the city are likely to soar up to 45 degrees Celsius, prompting authorities to urge people, particularly elderly citizens and children, to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary movement during peak daytime hours.

The advisory came amid intensifying summer conditions in the winter capital Kashmir, with authorities warning that prolonged exposure to heat could trigger dehydration, exhaustion and heat-related illnesses.

Officials added that the civic body has already deployed water sprinkling vehicles in several parts of the city to spray water on roads and reduce surface temperatures in an effort to provide temporary relief to commuters and pedestrians.

The JMC urged people to remain hydrated throughout the day and avoid stepping outdoors between late morning and afternoon hours unless absolutely necessary.

The civic body advised people to wear light cotton clothing, use umbrellas or head coverings while venturing outside, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Authorities also asked people to keep homes properly ventilated and consume sufficient fluids, including water and other hydrating drinks, to prevent dehydration during extreme heat conditions.

Special caution has been issued for children, elderly citizens and people suffering from health complications, with officials advising families not to allow vulnerable persons to remain outdoors for extended periods during the daytime.

The JMC also warned residents against leaving children or elderly persons inside parked vehicles, saying that enclosed vehicles can become dangerously hot within minutes under prevailing weather conditions.

Officials said field workers and sanitation staff operating in outdoor conditions have also been instructed to take precautionary measures, including regular hydration breaks.

Data issued by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar showed that Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 23.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, which was 1.5 degrees below normal for this time of the season.

Maximum temperature in Jammu was 39.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, which is 1.5 degrees above normal.

Ranchi, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) With Jharkhand reeling under an intense heat wave, Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday directed district administrations and government officials across the state to ensure the uninterrupted availability of drinking water for the public.

The Chief Minister instructed Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, Station House Officers, Circle Officers, Block Development Officers, Panchayat representatives and all government offices to make adequate arrangements for drinking water at public places and outside government establishments.

"In view of the continuously rising heat and heatwave conditions in Jharkhand, all officials must ensure proper arrangements for drinking water for the general public and prominently display information regarding the facilities so that pedestrians and other citizens can get relief," Soren said in a post on social media platform X.

The Chief Minister also directed officials to immediately address water scarcity issues in affected areas by deploying water tankers, repairing defunct hand pumps, and putting in place alternative arrangements wherever required.

"At the same time, all Deputy Commissioners shall ensure that wherever there is a water crisis, immediate water supply through tankers, repair of hand pumps, and other alternative arrangements are made," he said.

Emphasising the need for a humane and prompt administrative response during the extreme weather conditions, Soren said no village, hamlet or locality should suffer due to a shortage of drinking water.

"No village, hamlet or neighbourhood should face hardship due to shortage of drinking water -- this is our collective responsibility. During this period of intense heat, the administration must work with complete sensitivity, promptness and a humane approach. Public interest is paramount," he added.

Jharkhand has been witnessing severe heat wave conditions over the past few days, with temperatures hovering above 40 degrees Celsius in several districts.

The state government has issued heat wave warnings for at least six districts, while many areas have recorded temperatures nearly four degrees above normal.

According to weather forecasts, some relief is likely towards the end of the month, with light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected across parts of the state between May 26 and 29.

Bhopal, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The India Meteorological Department, Bhopal Centre, has issued an intense heat wave warning. The heat wave will grip several parts of Madhya Pradesh over the next five days, with temperatures likely to remain abnormally high and pose health risks to residents.

According to the latest weather bulletin issued on Saturday, intense heat conditions will persist across many districts, particularly in the northern, eastern, and central regions of the state. The bulletin, based on observations taken on Saturday, highlighted that on May 22, several areas recorded above-normal maximum temperatures, while minimum temperatures on May 23 also showed positive anomalies in places like Chhindwara, indicating warm nights.

The Meteorological Centre Bhopal has placed multiple districts under red, orange, and yellow alerts for heat wave conditions through May 27.

For the period from the morning of May 23 to May 24, severe heat wave conditions are likely at isolated places in Satna, Panna, Chhatarpur, and Tikamgarh. Similar severe heat wave warnings have been issued for Datia, Bhind, Rewa, Mauganj, Katni, Damoh, Niwari, and Maihar.

Heat wave conditions are expected in Sagar, while warm nights are forecast for Chhindwara, Balaghat, and Pandhurna. A broader list of districts, including Vidisha, Raisen, Rajgarh, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Ratlam, Ujjain, Agar, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Morena, Sheopur, Singrauli, Sidhi, Anuppur, Shahdol, Umaria, Dindori, Jabalpur, and Narsinghpur, are under heat wave alerts.

The forecast for May 24 to May 25 indicates a continued severe heat wave at isolated places in Satna, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Datia, Singrauli, Sidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Umaria, Katni, Damoh, Sagar, Niwari, and Maihar.

Heat wave conditions will affect many other districts such as Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, and others across the state. Similar patterns are expected to continue through May 25 to May 26 and May 26 to May 27, with severe heat wave warnings covering districts including Datia, Bhind, Singrauli, Sidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Satna, Umaria, Katni, Jabalpur, Panna, Damoh, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Niwari, and Maihar.

Heat wave alerts will remain in force for Bhopal, Vidisha, and several other regions during this period.

The synoptic situation shows that the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of the southwest Arabian Sea, southeast Arabian Sea, Comorin area, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, and most parts of the Andaman Sea.

The northern limit of the monsoon is currently passing through specific coordinates, and conditions are favourable for further advancement in the coming days.

A western disturbance is active as a cyclonic circulation over Jammu and neighbourhood, with a trough extending from Punjab to southwest Rajasthan. Another fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from May 28.

The Meteorological Department has urged residents to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. People are advised to drink plenty of water and keep themselves hydrated throughout the day.

It is recommended to avoid going out during peak heat hours between 12 noon and 3 p.m. Use of ORS, lemon water, buttermilk, and other homemade electrolyte-rich drinks is suggested. Light-coloured, loose cotton clothing, head covers, and umbrellas should be used when stepping out.

Special care should be taken for children, elderly persons, and those with existing health conditions.

Farmers have been advised to maintain soil moisture through frequent irrigation during morning or evening hours, avoid using fertilisers and pesticides during extreme heat, and ensure proper shade and water for livestock. This prolonged heat spell comes as the state experiences dry and hot weather conditions before the full arrival of the monsoon.

Ahmedabad, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been providing shelter, food and healthcare support to homeless residents through 35 shelter homes operating across the city during the ongoing summer heat, officials said on Saturday.

According to the Urban Community Development (UCD) Department of AMC, the shelter homes together have a capacity to accommodate 4,315 people and are currently operating at around 80 per cent occupancy.

Out of the 35 shelter homes, 33 function as day shelters while two operate as night shelters.

AMC said homeless residents staying at these facilities are being provided with regular meals and other basic amenities.

Considering the rising temperatures in Ahmedabad, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is also being distributed to help residents stay hydrated and protected from heat-related illnesses.

Officials said medical camps are regularly organised at shelter homes where residents undergo general health check-ups as part of preventive healthcare measures.

As part of rehabilitation and livelihood initiatives under the DAY-NULM project, an “Employment Generation” programme was organised on May 21, at the Vasna shelter home, which is operated by AMC in collaboration with an NGO.

During the programme, employment opportunities were provided to 11 residents of the Vasna shelter home in the city’s West Zone.

The UCD Department has also been conducting night drives at the Vasna shelter home, with operations continuing until midnight.

During a recent night drive, 53 homeless people were shifted to the shelter facility.

AMC officials, including the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the UCD Department, the department’s Director and other officials, have been visiting the shelter homes to monitor their functioning and facilities.

The civic body said regular operations under the anti-beggar drive are also being conducted with the cooperation of the Social Security Department, the police department and AMC’s UCD Department.

AMC said the shelter homes continue to provide support services to homeless residents across the city during extreme weather conditions.

Chennai, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of western and northern Tamil Nadu over the next three days, particularly in Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Vellore districts, even as several parts of the state continue to witness rising temperatures.

According to the weather department, an atmospheric circulation persists over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining regions, while a low-pressure area remains active over Kerala and nearby southeastern areas. These weather systems are expected to influence rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu over the coming days.

The department said that Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupathur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Kallakurichi districts are likely to receive heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, isolated rainfall is expected on Saturday in districts including Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni and Madurai.

The weather department has also issued a forecast for May 25 and 26, warning of heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, along with Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Madurai, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.

Meanwhile, Chennai is expected to witness partly cloudy skies through the day. The weather office said certain parts of the city could experience heat wave-like conditions despite the chances of isolated cloud cover.

Even as rain activity is predicted in several districts, temperatures across Tamil Nadu continue to remain high. Data from the weather department showed that 16 locations across the state recorded significantly high temperatures on Friday. Erode registered the highest temperature in the state at around 42 degrees C, followed by 41 degrees C in Chennai-Meenambakkam. Temperatures touched nearly 40 degree C in Tiruttani, Vellore, Madurai city and Tiruchirappalli.

Several other areas, including Chennai-Nungambakkam, Madurai Airport, Thanjavur and Karur Paramathi, recorded temperatures around 39 degrees C, while Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Palayamkottai, Parangipettai and Thoothukudi also experienced intense summer heat.

The contrasting weather pattern of heavy rain warnings in some districts and rising temperatures in others reflects the complex seasonal transition currently underway across Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday will inaugurate a major ammunition manufacturing facility in Shirdi, Maharashtra, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s indigenous Defence production capabilities under the Centre’s 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

The artillery shell manufacturing unit, located at the Savali Vihir Industrial Estate of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) near Shirdi in Ahilyanagar district, has been developed as part of the larger Shirdi Defence Manufacturing Complex. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will preside over the inauguration ceremony.

Built with an investment of approximately Rs 1,000 crore, the facility is spread across 200 acres and is expected to emerge as one of the country’s largest private-sector artillery shell manufacturing plants. The unit has the capacity to manufacture up to five lakh 155 mm artillery shells annually, using entirely indigenous technology and raw materials.

Officials said the project was completed within a year and will significantly strengthen India’s Defence manufacturing ecosystem. Apart from artillery shells, the complex will also house production units for rocket launchers, long-range rocket components, drones, and electronic testing systems.

The facility is expected to generate around 2,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region. It will also provide major business opportunities to local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), thereby boosting the regional economy.

Officials stated that the factory will not only cater to domestic Defence requirements but will also support the export of Defence equipment to other countries, in line with India’s growing focus on becoming a global Defence manufacturing hub.

Authorities believe the project will help position Ahilyanagar district as an emerging centre for Defence manufacturing in the country.

In addition to the Shirdi complex, another major ordnance manufacturing project is being developed at Belwandi in Shrigonda taluka. Spread over 600 acres with a proposed investment of Rs 2,000 crore, the facility will focus on manufacturing explosives such as TNT, RDX, and HMX.

Officials said the Belwandi project will have an annual production capacity of 20,000 tonnes of TNT, making it one of the largest explosive manufacturing facilities in both the government and private sectors.

Ahilyanagar district Guardian Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said that once both projects become fully operational, they could together provide employment opportunities to nearly 4,000 to 5,000 youths in the region.

To mark the inauguration, a two-day Defence exhibition will also be organised in Shirdi on May 23 and 24. The exhibition will feature participation from leading Defence companies along with more than 100 MSMEs, showcasing advancements in Defence manufacturing and technology.

Officials added that the projects are aligned with the Centre’s flagship initiatives such as 'Atmanirbhar Bharat,' 'Make in India,' and 'Make for the World,' aimed at making India self-reliant in Defence production and expanding its global military exports.

New Delhi, May 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) After days of relentless heat and scorching temperatures, light rain and cloudy skies on Saturday morning brought temporary relief to residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The sudden change in weather brought smiles to many faces as parts of the city witnessed dust storms, gusty winds, and intermittent rainfall, offering a short respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions.

Delhi is currently experiencing highly unstable pre-monsoon weather conditions, marked by strong winds, dust storms, and scattered showers across several areas. The abrupt weather shift comes after an extended spell of intense heat that had turned the national Capital into a virtual furnace over the past week.

Many residents expressed relief following the rainfall.

Speaking to IANS, a taxi driver said that until Friday, the extreme heat had affected not only him but also the performance of his vehicle. Another auto-rickshaw driver shared that the unbearable temperatures had made daily work extremely difficult, but Saturday’s cooler weather brought some comfort.

Despite the brief spell of rain, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'Orange Alert' for Delhi and adjoining NCR areas, warning that severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue until May 27. According to the weather department, maximum temperatures in several parts of the city may reach up to 46 degrees Celsius over the coming days.

The IMD has also warned of stormy rainfall activity across 13 states, while heavy rainfall is expected in northeastern and southern states due to the advancing southwest monsoon.

According to the department, strong winds with speeds of up to 65 kilometres per hour are likely to prevail in many regions during this period. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for northeastern states, along with Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

The IMD stated that over the next three to four days, the southwest monsoon is expected to advance further into the southeast Arabian Sea, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of the Andaman Sea, and additional areas of the east-central Bay of Bengal. This advancement is expected to trigger widespread rainfall activity across southern and northeastern parts of the country.

The Meteorological Department has forecast that severe heat conditions are likely to persist over the next several days. Temperatures in Delhi are expected to remain between 45 and 47 degrees Celsius in some areas, while wind speeds could reach up to 35 kilometres per hour. The 'Orange Alert' for heatwave conditions remains in force until May 27.

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, stood at 44.5 degrees Celsius, which was 4.1 degrees above the seasonal average. Although the reading was marginally lower by 0.6 degrees Celsius compared to the previous day, the city continued to experience oppressive heat conditions.

According to IMD data, temperatures in Delhi have risen sharply over the past ten days. On May 11, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 37.5 degrees Celsius. By May 19, it had surged to 45.1 degrees Celsius. On May 20, the temperature remained extremely high at 44.5 degrees Celsius, reflecting an increase of more than seven degrees within just ten days.

The IMD noted that despite temperatures hovering between 43 and 44 degrees Celsius, Delhi has not yet officially entered the “heatwave” category under its technical criteria.

On Friday, the maximum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung observatory was 43.3 degrees Celsius, which was 3.1 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 29.3 degrees Celsius, 2.6 degrees above the seasonal average.

Other weather stations across the capital also recorded high temperatures. Lodhi Road registered 43.4 degrees Celsius, Aya Nagar recorded 43.5 degrees, Palam reported 43.2 degrees, while the Ridge area recorded the highest temperature at 44.4 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar, May 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) Due to Pradhan Mantri (PM) Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, government offices and private consumers in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag have received zero electricity bills.

An official statement said on Friday that the flagship rooptop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli (PMSGMB) Yojana and Solarisation Scheme for Government Buildings, aimed to reduce electricity bills of households and public offices, are revolutionising power sector and making appreciable progress in Anantnag district.

The schemes are successfully transforming energy landscape in both domestic and public sectors, leading the way toward self-reliance in the district.

According to the concerned officials, 2,398 Solar Rooftops (SRTs) have been installed with a capacity of 8.65 MW and subsidy amounting to Rs 17.67 crore has been disbursed among 2,394 beneficiaries under PMSGMB Yojana so far.

Under Solarisation Scheme of Government Buildings, rooftop solar installation has been completed in 242 buildings with a capacity of 3,532 kW.

As per the latest data released by the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) Anantnag, a growing number of domestic households and government buildings, including Staff Quarter, Tourist Office Achabal, Manager-Cum-Chemist, Horticulture Office Achabal, and government high schools at Buchoo, Khrity and Dessu have achieved a historic financial breakthrough, recording "Zero Electricity Bills" since installation.

This achievement is driven by grid-connected rooftop solar installations, allowing beneficiaries and offices to generate electricity and feed surplus power back into the grid ensuring a 100 per cent savings for their daily power needs.

Senior officials from district administration and KPDCL noted that the data indicates that the schemes have huge potential to remarkably reduce bills and ease the load on the traditional power grid.

The authorities have urged the household consumers to register for the PMSGMB Yojana via the designated national portal -- consumer.pmsuryaghar.gov.in, to secure a future of clean, free and sustainable power.

A perceptible paradigm shift has occurred for the betterment of the common man due to the various national flagship programmes and Jammu and Kashmir has been in the forefront of receiving such benefits.

Amaravati, May 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) With Andhra Pradesh continuing to reel under severe heat wave conditions, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday directed local authorities to declare holidays in areas experiencing extreme heat, depending on the prevailing conditions.

He directed officials to remain more vigilant and take immediate steps to protect people from the impact of the extreme heat.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to identify areas recording the highest temperatures and continuously issue warnings and advisories to residents in those regions.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that the heat wave intensity had increased significantly due to severe El Niño conditions.

They informed him that during the severe El Niño year of 2015, the state recorded a peak temperature of 50.1 degrees Celsius, and this year too, temperatures have touched as high as 48 degrees Celsius under similar conditions.

Officials further noted that temperatures had risen from 45 degrees Celsius to 48 degrees Celsius over the past three days.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of increasing green cover across the state, noting that improved groundwater levels contribute to greenery and help mitigate the impact of extreme temperatures.

He cited Annamayya district as an example, stating that it had recorded comparatively lower temperatures than other districts.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need to provide relief to the public by ensuring the availability of drinking water, buttermilk and ORS packets at crowded places and public gathering areas.

He instructed District Collectors to spread awareness about heat wave safety measures and ensure continuous dissemination of information through media and social media platforms.

Stressing that protecting lives is the government’s top priority, the Chief Minister urged people to take precautions while stepping outdoors during peak heat hours.

He advised elderly persons, pregnant women, children and those with health issues to avoid going outdoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Chief Minister also directed District Collectors and mandal-level officials to remain fully prepared to handle emergency situations arising due to the extreme weather.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that 1,349 heat shelters and cooling centres had been established in urban areas, while arrangements had been made at 446 traffic junctions to provide shade for motorists and police personnel.

The Chief Minister also suggested providing water troughs and earthen pots for animals and birds suffering because of the heat.

The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure there was no shortage of drinking water in rural and urban areas and instructed them to supply water through tankers wherever required.

He also called for the establishment of emergency response centres in different parts of the state.

Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad and senior officials from various departments attended the review meeting.

In another development, the Delhi government took another step towards making Delhi cleaner, smarter and more sustainable through the promotion of sustainable urban mobility on Friday.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the Uber Airport Share service, in the presence of Minister for Environment, Forest and Wildlife Manjinder Singh Sirsa, at the Delhi Secretariat.

Launched at one of the country's busiest transit hubs, the Uber Airport Share service at the Indira Gandhi International Airport will offer affordable, convenient and seamless shared ride options directly through the Uber app.

Chief Minister Gupta said, "The Delhi government is committed to building a cleaner, greener and smarter capital through innovative and sustainable mobility solutions."

"The launch of the ride share service is a major step towards reducing traffic congestion, lowering vehicular emissions and encouraging citizens to adopt shared and environmentally responsible modes of transport.
Chandigarh, May 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) In a major decision aimed at providing relief to people amid the heatwave, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday revised timings of all Punjab government offices, schools and colleges.

Under the new schedule, working hours will be changed from the existing 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in larger public interest, an official statement said.

Chief Minister Mann said the revised timings would come into effect from May 25 and will remain implemented till further orders.

"The decision has been taken to facilitate the common people so they can conveniently get their work done in government offices during the scorching heat. The decision was taken after due consultation with all stakeholders to ensure the welfare of everyone," he added.

Chief Minister Mann also said the revised timings would enable people to complete their official work early in the morning without having to take a leave from their jobs.

"The move will also greatly benefit employees, as they will be able to finish their duties before temperatures rise sharply during the day," he added.

The Chief Minister also said that employees would now get more time to spend with their children, who would also return home around the same time due to the revised school and college timings.

"The decision reflects the Punjab government's people-centric approach and commitment towards improving the daily lives of citizens," he added.

Chief Minister Mann said the revised timings will apply to all offices of the government along with schools and colleges.

"According to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) data, the peak power load begins after 1 p.m., and therefore the new office timings will also help reduce electricity consumption and ease pressure on the power infrastructure," he added.

Reiterating the state government's commitment towards the welfare of every section of society, Chief Minister Mann asserted that no stone would be left unturned in safeguarding public convenience and ensuring people's wellbeing.

Bhopal, May 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) The India Meteorological Department has issued a strong warning of an intense heatwave prevailing across Madhya Pradesh for the next five days, with red and orange alerts sounded in several districts.

As temperatures continue to soar above 44 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state, the Meteorological Centre in Bhopal has cautioned residents, especially vulnerable groups, to take immediate precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The bulletin issued on Friday highlighted that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist until at least May 26, with some districts facing extreme risk.

According to the bulletin, districts including Shivpuri, Guna, Ashoknagar, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Sheopur, and parts of Gwalior are under red alert, indicating a very high probability of heatstroke and related ailments across all age groups.

Orange alerts have been issued for areas such as Vidisha, Raisen, Rajgarh, and others, where prolonged exposure to the sun and heavy physical work could lead to serious health complications.

Yellow alerts cover the remaining regions, advising caution, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions.

Daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 44 and 47 degrees Celsius in many places, with minimum temperatures also staying high. The weather department has noted that the scorching conditions are the result of a prevailing high-pressure system and delayed monsoon advancement.

The southwest monsoon is currently progressing slowly, with its northern limit passing through specific coordinates, but full relief from the heat is not expected immediately. A western disturbance and cyclonic circulation over northwest Pakistan are being monitored, but their impact on Madhya Pradesh may remain limited in the coming days.

The bulletin shows rainfall distribution maps indicating only isolated or scattered showers possible in some eastern and northern districts towards the end of the forecast period.

Health authorities and the IMD have issued detailed advisories to the public.

Residents have been urged to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day, avoid going out between noon and 3 p.m., and wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothes. The use of ORS, lemon water, buttermilk, and other home-made fluids is strongly recommended. Special care should be taken for infants, elderly people, and those suffering from chronic illnesses.

Farmers have been advised to schedule irrigation during early morning or evening hours, avoid applying fertilisers and pesticides during peak heat, and provide shade and clean water for livestock.

The current heatwave has already led to increased cases of dehydration and exhaustion in hospitals across the state. Local administrations in affected districts are activating heat action plans, including setting up shaded resting areas and awareness campaigns.

The IMD has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and follow official updates regularly.

This prolonged spell of extreme heat comes as a challenge for the state, which is still recovering from earlier summer temperatures.

As the southwest monsoon edges closer, there is cautious optimism that conditions may ease after May 26 in some parts. However, for the immediate future, the focus remains on public safety and minimising the impact of the heatwave.

New Delhi, May 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) Scorching heatwave conditions continued to trouble residents across Delhi-NCR on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the national capital and adjoining regions.

The whole region has reported a sharp rise in temperatures over the past few days, making outdoor activities increasingly difficult for people.

A jogger told IANS, “The heat has increased significantly compared to earlier days. The weather used to be pleasant in the morning, but over the last four to five days, the temperature has risen sharply. It remains manageable till around 8 or 9 a.m., after which the heat intensifies and continues till nearly 4 p.m., with temperatures touching 44-45 degrees Celsius.”

Another morning walker said, “The heat is increasing continuously. Earlier, we used to go for a run at 6 a.m., but now we have to start at 5 a.m. because by 6 a.m. the conditions become extremely uncomfortable due to the rising temperature.”

The IMD has placed Delhi under an orange alert for the next five days, as temperatures are expected to remain exceptionally high across the city and the surrounding NCR. Several parts of Delhi-NCR have been witnessing intense daytime heat along with unusually warm nights.

In view of the worsening weather conditions, the IMD upgraded its warning from a yellow alert to an orange alert on Wednesday.

An orange alert issued by the weather department advises residents to remain prepared and take necessary precautions, as severe weather conditions may disrupt daily life. The alert also warns of an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, elderly people, outdoor workers, and individuals suffering from existing medical conditions.

According to the IMD forecast, Delhi’s maximum temperature may touch 46 degrees Celsius on May 22, while daytime temperatures are expected to remain above 43 degrees Celsius throughout the week.

The IMD further stated that Delhi, along with Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, is likely to experience severe heatwave conditions accompanied by strong surface winds during the afternoon and evening hours.

Delhi also recorded its warmest May night in nearly 14 years, with the minimum temperature settling at 31.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday. According to IMD data, the last time the city recorded a higher minimum temperature in May was on May 26, 2012, when the minimum temperature stood at 32.5 degrees Celsius.

There appears to be no immediate relief from the sweltering conditions, as the IMD has forecast that the heatwave may continue until at least May 26.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh’s Banda recorded the country’s highest temperature at 48 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, highlighting the severe heat conditions prevailing across northern India.

The intense heat has also triggered a sharp rise in electricity consumption across Delhi. The national capital’s peak power demand has already crossed 7,700 MW this season, and officials warned that the demand could rise further if the heatwave persists.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke. Special caution has been advised for children, elderly citizens, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the “poor” category, with AQI levels recorded at Anand Vihar (282), Aya Nagar (240), Bawana (232), Cantonment Area (175), DTU (195), IGI Airport (T3) (212), Narela (253), Okhla Phase-2 (249), Pusa (251), and Sonia Vihar (236).

Guwahati, May 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment towards biodiversity conservation, protection of forests and elimination of poaching, marking the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said Assam is blessed with rich natural resources, lush forests and rare wildlife, and stressed the need for stronger conservation efforts to preserve the state’s ecological heritage for future generations.

“Our Assam, enriched with lush forests, rare wildlife, and invaluable natural resources, is truly blessed by nature. From the iconic Kaziranga National Park to the dense forests of Dehing Patkai National Park, from Manas National Park to Maguri Beel, our land is surrounded by a rich treasure of biodiversity,” CM Sarma wrote.

The Chief Minister further stated that the government would continue its drive against encroachment in forest areas and intensify anti-poaching measures across protected zones in the state.

“On this special occasion of International Biodiversity Day, we reaffirm our commitment to work with even greater determination towards conserving our biodiversity. We are resolute in our efforts to free our forests from encroachment and to build a zero-poaching Assam,” he added.

Assam is home to several globally recognised wildlife habitats and national parks that shelter endangered species, including the one-horned rhinoceros, Royal Bengal tiger, wild buffalo, Asian elephant and hoolock gibbon.

The state government has, in recent years, intensified eviction drives in reserved forest areas and wildlife sanctuaries, saying the measures are aimed at protecting ecologically sensitive regions from illegal encroachment.

Authorities have also strengthened surveillance and anti-poaching operations in national parks, particularly in Kaziranga, which has witnessed a significant decline in rhino poaching cases over the years.

Observed annually on May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity seeks to raise awareness on the importance of protecting ecosystems, wildlife and natural resources across the world.

The order further stated that classes for students from Classes 6 to 8 would be permitted only till 10.30 a.m.

The District Magistrate issued the directive under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), citing the severe heatwave conditions prevailing in the district and the possible adverse impact on the health and safety of children.

The district administration has directed the District Education Officer, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) officials, Sub-Divisional Officers and police authorities to ensure strict compliance with the order.

In Arwal district, District Magistrate Amrisha Bains has also ordered the suspension of classes up to Grade 5 in all government and private schools, pre-schools, Anganwadi centres and coaching institutes.

Additionally, academic activities for students from Classes 6 to 12 have been prohibited after 11 a.m.

The restrictions in Arwal district will remain in force from May 22 to May 25, 2026.

According to the district administration, inputs received from the Bihar Meteorological Service Centre in Patna indicate that extreme temperatures and heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the coming days across several parts of the state.

Authorities stated that the precautionary measures had become necessary to protect children from health risks associated with excessive heat, including heatstroke, dehydration and related illnesses.

Government residential schools, however, have been exempted from the restrictions imposed in Arwal district.

District administrations in both Patna and Arwal have appealed to parents and guardians to take necessary precautions and avoid exposing children to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours.

School administrations across both districts have also been instructed to reschedule academic activities in accordance with the official directives issued by the authorities.

The prevailing weather conditions have severely affected normal life in several districts of Bihar, with daytime temperatures remaining above 40 degrees Celsius in most parts of the state.

Officials said the situation continues to be monitored closely and further decisions would be taken depending on weather conditions in the coming days.

Jaipur, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Central Zone Bench, Bhopal, has issued significant directions for the protection of the Hingonia Dam area in Rajasthan and the removal of unlawful encroachments from the site.

The matter was heard by Justice Sheo Kumar Singh, Judicial Member, and Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi, Expert Member.

During the hearing of Application No. 07/2025 (CZ), titled Kamlesh Roj vs State of Rajasthan & Others, counsel appearing for the State of Rajasthan and the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) informed the Tribunal that additional action-taken reports had recently been submitted before the Bench.

However, the applicant raised concerns regarding alleged discrepancies between the original total area of Hingonia Dam and the area reflected in the reports submitted by the authorities.

Counsel representing certain respondents submitted that relevant details relating to the dam area had already been provided in the report filed by the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

The applicant also pressed Interim Application No. 30/2026 seeking interim relief, along with Interim Application No. 72/2026 concerning the applicability of the Wetland Conservation and Management Rules, 2017.

The Tribunal observed that issues relating to wetlands exceeding 2.25 hectares would be governed by directions issued earlier by the Supreme Court.

The NGT directed the District Collector and the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) to remove unlawful encroachments from the Hingonia Dam area by following due process of law.

Observing that the Rajasthan Water Resources Department is the custodian of the dam, the Tribunal further directed the Principal Secretary of the department to examine the matter and ensure that the entire dam area remains under the department’s custody, supervision and protection.

The Tribunal also instructed the department to initiate necessary action in case any encroachments are found in the area and submit an affidavit before the next date of hearing detailing the action taken.

Since pleadings in the matter have been completed, the Tribunal listed the case for final hearing on July 2, 2026.

The order is being seen as significant in the context of environmental protection, preservation of water bodies and enforcement against encroachments in ecologically sensitive zones.

The matter has also drawn attention because of the growing concerns over shrinking wetland areas and increasing pressure on natural water resources due to urban expansion and illegal occupation.

Jaipur, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) In an effort aimed at reducing fuel consumption and lowering operational costs, the Rajasthan High Court administration has decided to conduct court proceedings through video conferencing for three days across both the Jodhpur Principal Bench and the Jaipur Bench.

A notice issued by Registrar General Chanchal Mishra on Wednesday stated that, as a pilot initiative, cases will be heard virtually on May 22, May 26 and May 27, 2026.

The decision follows a memorandum issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Government of India, on May 12, as well as a circular released by the Supreme Court on May 15, both of which focused on promoting fuel conservation while ensuring uninterrupted judicial functioning across institutions.

According to the order, proceedings in all courts functioning under the Jodhpur Principal Bench and the Jaipur Bench will be conducted through video conferencing from courtrooms on the designated dates.

However, the Rajasthan High Court administration clarified that physical hearings would not be completely discontinued and could still take place whenever considered necessary by the concerned courts.

The initiative was finalised after consultations with the High Court Bar Associations of both the Jodhpur Principal Bench and Jaipur Bench.

The High Court administration has also appealed to advocates, litigants and other stakeholders associated with the judicial process to cooperate with the fuel conservation initiative by opting for virtual hearings wherever feasible.

Apart from encouraging virtual participation in hearings, lawyers and court visitors have also been advised to minimise unnecessary travel and adopt vehicle-pooling practices in an attempt to conserve petrol and diesel consumption.

The move assumes significance as concerns relating to fuel conservation, environmental sustainability and cost-efficient administrative functioning continue to receive greater attention across institutions.

The initiative also comes days after Justice Sameer Jain was seen cycling to the Jaipur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court, a gesture that drew considerable public attention towards fuel conservation and environmental awareness.

Legal circles believe that if the pilot initiative proves successful, similar measures promoting hybrid or virtual functioning could also be considered more frequently in future administrative planning, especially in situations where physical presence is not mandatory.

At the same time, the High Court administration has maintained that judicial work and access to justice will not be affected, with arrangements being made to ensure that proceedings continue smoothly during the designated virtual hearing days.

New Delhi, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have urged people to take preventive measures against heat-related illnesses as soaring temperatures continue to impact several parts of the country.

Dr Piyush Ranjan, Additional Professor in the Department of Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, said that cases of dehydration and heat stroke tend to rise sharply whenever temperatures increase.

"Whenever the temperature rises, health problems related to heat begin to appear. The first and mildest condition is dehydration, in which the body loses water and salts," he said.

He warned that dehydration can progress to heat stroke, commonly known as 'loo lagna', and in severe situations, patients may even lose consciousness.

Highlighting precautionary measures, Dr Ranjan advised people to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours.

"As far as possible, people should avoid going outdoors between 11 a.m. and 4–5 p.m., when temperatures are at their peak," he said.

He added that if venturing outside is unavoidable, people should wear full-sleeved clothes, full-length trousers, and keep their heads covered with caps, scarves, or turbans. He also recommended the use of umbrellas and staying indoors, whenever possible.

Dr Ranjan stressed the importance of proper hydration before going outdoors.

"People should drink sufficient water before stepping outside. Ideally, one or two litres of water should be consumed before leaving home. While outdoors, people should also consume electrolytes or ORS to maintain the balance of water and salts in the body and prevent dehydration," he said.

Dr Neeraj Nishchal, Professor in the Department of Medicine, said plain water alone may not be sufficient during extreme heat conditions because the body loses salts through sweating.

"It is important to understand that drinking only plain water is not enough, because during extreme heat, the body loses not just water but also salt through sweating. Therefore, ORS solutions or electrolytes are considered more beneficial," he said.

He also suggested consuming traditional drinks and foods such as Bel ka Sharbat, shikanji, and lentil water to help the body stay hydrated during the heatwave.

According to Dr Nishchal, hospitals are witnessing a growing number of heatwave-related health complaints. The most common symptoms include dehydration, weakness, dizziness, headaches, excessive sweating, vomiting, and low blood pressure.

"In severe cases, heat stroke is being reported, where the body temperature rises dangerously high. Patients may suffer from high fever, unconsciousness, confusion, and sometimes even seizures," he said.

He added that elderly people, children, pregnant women, and individuals suffering from illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease are among the most vulnerable groups during extreme heat conditions.

New Delhi, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Residents of the National Capital Region (NCR) are grappling with an unrelenting spell of heat, with discomfort now extending well into the night.

Not just the daytime, but warm and humid nights are making conditions increasingly unbearable, as temperatures stay above normal levels.

According to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the region is likely to continue experiencing heatwave conditions over the next six days.

Daytime temperatures are hovering around 45 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature remains unusually high, ranging between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius. The lack of nighttime cooling has worsened public discomfort.

The maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR on Thursday was recorded at 44 degrees C and is expected to cross 45 degrees Celsius on Friday.

The IMD has issued a warning of heatwave conditions accompanied by strong surface winds during the afternoon and evening hours, along with the possibility of a ‘warm night’.

Similar conditions are expected to persist on Friday, with the maximum temperature at 45 degrees and the minimum around 31 degrees Celsius. Heatwave warnings remain in place, with strong winds likely during the latter half of the day.

From May 23 to May 24, the temperature is projected to remain steady at around 45 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are likely to stay near 31 degrees. Heatwave conditions and strong surface winds are expected to continue during the afternoon and evening hours.

For May 25 and 26, the IMD has forecast no relief, with maximum temperatures likely to stay at 45 degrees and minimum temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius.

Amid the severe heat, the Health Department has stepped up measures to tackle health problems. Hospitals have been directed to arrange additional beds, set up separate wards for heatstroke cases, and ensure the availability of specialised medical care.

Health experts have advised residents to avoid stepping out between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., stay well-hydrated, wear light clothing, and cover their heads when venturing outdoors.

The IMD has said that there is little likelihood of relief from the heatwave in the coming days. With both day and night temperatures remaining above normal, the situation is expected to worsen further, adding to the challenges faced by residents of Delhi-NCR.

Mumbai, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Pune Regional Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), under the Mumbai Zonal Unit on Thursday seized prohibited wildlife species near Pune Railway Station and apprehended two persons allegedly involved in the illegal possession and sale of protected animals.

Acting on specific Intelligence inputs, DRI officers launched a surveillance operation in Pune and intercepted one suspect at the identified location on May 20. During examination, officials recovered three live Malabar giant squirrels concealed inside two corrugated cartons.

Further investigation and follow-up enquiries led the officers to another location in Pune, where a second suspect was intercepted. During the operation, officials recovered seven live Indian star tortoise from his possession.

According to officials, the Malabar giant squirrel is listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and its hunting and trade are strictly prohibited, except under provisions permitted by law.

Similarly, the Indian star tortoise is also protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which grants the species the highest level of legal protection. Hunting, possession, transportation, and trade of the species are prohibited under the Act.

The rescued wildlife, along with the two apprehended individuals and the packing materials used for concealment, have been handed over to the Forest Department in Pune for further legal proceedings under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

The DRI stated that it remains committed to protecting wildlife and preserving environmental sustainability through Intelligence-based operations targeting wildlife traffickers, poaching syndicates, and other illegal networks involved in the trade of protected species.

Earlier in the day, the DRI announced that it has busted a large-scale e-cigarette (vape) smuggling racket in its operations across several ports, airports and ICDs in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal in the last few days.

Acting on specific Intelligence, DRI identified, tracked and intercepted multiple suspicious import consignments that were mis-declared to evade customs scrutiny, according to Ministry of Finance.

Detailed examination led to the seizure of nearly 3,00,000 electronic cigarettes/vapes of various brands, flavours and specifications valued at more than Rs 120 crore, the ministry said.

These prohibited e-cigarettes were found to be sourced from China in every instance and imported in concealment in items such as furniture and metal chair parts.

Bhopal, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Madhya Pradesh is reeling under an intense heatwave with maximum temperatures remaining significantly above normal across the state. A total of 37 districts have been placed under heatwave alerts for the coming days.

The western parts of the state recorded maximum temperatures between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius on May 20, while eastern Madhya Pradesh saw temperatures ranging from 43 to 45 degrees Celsius.

The highest temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius was registered in Khajuraho, sending alarm bells ringing among authorities and residents alike.

Heatwave conditions were officially recorded in Satna, Khajuraho, Mandla, Nougong, and Damoh. The India Meteorological Department’s Meteorological Centre in Bhopal has warned that on Thursday, most parts of the state are likely to experience maximum temperatures between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius, with several districts expected to remain under severe heatwave influence.

A total of 37 districts have been placed under heatwave alerts for the coming days. These include Bhopal, Raisen, Vidisha, Sehore, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Ratlam, Shajapur, Agar Malwa, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Morena, Sheopur, Shahdol, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Mandla, Katni, Umaria, Balaghat, Dindori, Anuppur, Mauganj, Satna, Panna, Damoh, Sagar, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and Niwari.

The heat index is also expected to remain high, increasing discomfort and health risks for the population.

Meteorologists have attributed the prevailing conditions to the ongoing dry spell and absence of any significant weather system that could bring relief in the immediate future.

Daytime temperatures are likely to stay elevated, making outdoor activities particularly challenging during peak afternoon hours.

Health authorities have issued detailed advisories urging citizens to take necessary precautions. Residents have been advised to drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated while avoiding direct exposure to sunlight between noon and 4 p.m.

The use of light-coloured, loose cotton clothing, head covers, umbrellas, and sunglasses is strongly recommended.

People should avoid strenuous physical activities during the hottest parts of the day and take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas.

The administration has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant, especially the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

With temperatures showing no immediate signs of abatement, officials have urged people to follow weather updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local authorities closely to ensure their safety during this intense summer spell.

Patna, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Bihar continues to reel under an intense heatwave, with scorching temperatures and hot winds severely affecting normal life across the state. The India Meteorological Department has issued a 'Red Alert' for heatwave conditions in five districts of southwestern Bihar—Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, and Aurangabad—warning that the situation could become extremely dangerous and life-threatening.

According to meteorologists, temperatures in several districts may touch or exceed 43 degrees Celsius.

Blistering westerly winds and extreme daytime heat have forced people indoors, while roads and marketplaces remain largely deserted during afternoon hours.

Health experts have urged residents to avoid stepping out between 12 P.M. and 4 P.M., when the risk of heatstroke and dehydration is highest.

Doctors have advised people to stay hydrated by consuming water, lemon water, ORS, and other fluids.

The weather department has predicted slight relief for Patna, with the possibility of partial cloud cover and light drizzle in some areas.

However, humid conditions caused by easterly winds are expected to continue, keeping discomfort levels high.

The maximum temperature in the capital is likely to remain around 38 degrees Celsius.

The severe weather conditions are also impacting railway operations across Bihar, leading to major delays in train services.

Several prominent trains, including Magadh Express, Garib Rath Express, Patliputra Express, Vikramshila Express, Brahmaputra Mail, and Poorva Express, have reportedly been running behind schedule by one to three hours.

The worst affected was the Shramjeevi Express, which reached Patna Junction nearly three hours late on Wednesday.

Passengers have been forced to wait for extended periods at railway stations, causing particular hardship to elderly travellers, women, and children.

Delays have also disrupted connecting journeys and onward travel plans.

Railway officials attributed the delays to rising temperatures, operational pressure, and heat-related effects on railway tracks.

However, passengers complained that such disruptions recur every summer without any long-term corrective measures.

The extreme weather is now affecting not only public health and road transport but also the railway network, adding to the difficulties faced by people across Bihar.

Jaipur, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Meteorological Department on Thursday warned of severe heatwave conditions in several districts of Rajasthan for the next four days.

Sriganganagar has emerged as the hottest city in the state in the last 24 hours, recording a maximum temperature of 46.5 degrees Celsius. Pilani in Jhunjhunu was the second hottest at 45.3 degrees Celsius.

Phalodi and Bikaner recorded 44.8 degrees Celsius, Churu 44.5 degrees Celsius, Kota and Alwar 44.2 degrees Celsius, and Chittorgarh 44 degrees Celsius.

Most cities in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Bharatpur, and Kota divisions remained in the grip of heatwave conditions.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in more than half of Rajasthan for the next three to four days, with little relief expected from the scorching temperatures.

Amid the rising heat, preventive measures are being taken in several cities. Water is being continuously sprinkled near Zorawar Singh Gate on Amer Road in Jaipur to reduce surface temperatures.

In Kota, water is being sprayed morning and evening at some cattle shelters to protect animals from the intense heat.

Further, Sirohi recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, while Pratapgarh recorded 39.6 degrees Celsius, making them among the few districts to remain below the 40-degree mark on Tuesday.

Sirohi, in fact, also recorded a minimum temperature of 21.8 degrees Celsius, making it the lowest temperature in the state in the last 24 hours.

Jaipur recorded a slight fall in temperature on Wednesday, but residents continued to face intense heat throughout the day. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 31.1 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours.

Alwar continued to reel under temperatures close to 45 degrees Celsius for the third consecutive day. The Municipal Corporation sprinkled water on roads and installed tents at several places to provide shade to pedestrians and commuters.

Ajmer experienced severe heat and humidity from morning. The district recorded a maximum temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 28.6 degrees Celsius.

Traffic remained sparse during afternoon hours as residents tried to avoid the scorching conditions.

The Shekhawati region, including Sikar district, has been facing continuous heatwave conditions for the past six days. On Wednesday, Sikar recorded a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.4 degrees Celsius.

Hot winds and rising temperatures have disrupted normal life in most parts of the state, with roads remaining deserted during the peak afternoon hours.

New Delhi, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The scorching summer heat has made life extremely difficult for people in the national capital and surrounding areas, with Delhi-NCR reeling under intense heatwave conditions.

In its latest night weather bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that the mercury in Delhi could touch a dangerous 47 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Amid the continuously rising temperatures, the weather department has maintained a strong heatwave alert for the capital.

The biggest concern for residents is that there appears to be no immediate relief from the searing heat, with the IMD forecasting that the prevailing conditions may continue until May 26.

Several parts of Delhi-NCR have been experiencing intense heatwave conditions over the past few days, prompting the IMD to upgrade its warning level from a “yellow” alert to an “orange” alert on Wednesday.

Temperatures in Delhi are expected to remain around 46 degrees Celsius, while heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over the next two days. Heatwave conditions are also expected to persist in the days thereafter.

According to the IMD, there is unlikely to be any significant change in the maximum and minimum temperatures during the next seven days. The weather office has placed Delhi under an orange alert for the next five days, stating that daytime temperatures are unlikely to dip below 43 degrees Celsius this week.

The IMD declares a heatwave when the maximum temperature crosses 40 degrees Celsius and remains at least 4.5 degrees Celsius above normal.

An orange alert issued by the IMD advises people to remain prepared and take precautionary measures, as worsening weather conditions may severely affect daily life. The alert also indicates a high risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for children, elderly citizens, and people with pre-existing medical conditions.

The IMD further stated that Delhi, along with Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, is likely to witness severe heat conditions throughout the week, accompanied by strong surface winds during the afternoon and evening hours.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district recorded the country’s highest temperature at 48 degrees Celsius on Wednesday as heatwave conditions continued across the state.

The air quality in Delhi remained in the “poor” category on Thursday, with AQI readings recorded at Anand Vihar (215), Ashok Vihar (162), Rohini (178), Wazirpur (195), and IIT Delhi (160), among other areas.

Chennai, May 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in five districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, with the weather system expected to keep conditions unsettled across the state and Puducherry for at least another week.

According to weather officials, a trough extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal is influencing atmospheric conditions over the region, leading to enhanced rainfall activity in several parts of Tamil Nadu.

The IMD has particularly warned of heavy rainfall in the hilly and adjoining regions of Coimbatore district, along with Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul districts on Thursday.

Authorities have advised residents in these areas to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable locations prone to waterlogging, landslides, and traffic disruptions. The Nilgiris district, which frequently experiences intense rainfall during such weather systems, is expected to receive significant showers. Similar conditions are also likely in the hilly belts of Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul districts, where localised heavy downpours may affect normal life.

The weather department has further indicated that rainfall activity is expected to intensify in additional districts on Friday.

Strong rain accompanied by gusty winds is likely over Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, and Tiruchy districts. Similar weather conditions have also been forecast for Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Erode, and Nilgiris districts.

Officials said intermittent showers and changing weather patterns are likely to continue across many regions as the atmospheric system remains active over the coming days.

The rainfall could provide relief from the prevailing summer heat in several interior districts, although isolated areas may also experience strong winds and brief periods of heavy rain.

Meanwhile, Chennai is likely to witness hot and humid conditions despite the rain activity elsewhere in the state. The maximum temperature in the city is likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius, according to the forecast. Authorities have advised the public to follow weather updates and exercise caution, particularly in districts expected to receive heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Gandhinagar, May 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Gujarat government has decided to send advance and consolidated proposals to the Centre for diversion of protected forest land required for future road widening projects, as part of an effort to speed up infrastructure works while maintaining environmental safeguards.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.

Government spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani said the Chief Minister had issued directions for advance planning in cases where protected forest areas fall within the margins of roads identified for future expansion.

"State roads where protected forest land falls within the margins and where widening is planned in future should be identified in advance, and consolidated proposals for diversion of such protected forest areas should be sent to the Central government from now itself," Minister Vaghani noted while briefing reporters after the meeting.

He said the state government would also simultaneously arrange the non-forest land required to be handed over to the Forest Department against the forest land proposed for diversion so that approvals could be processed more quickly.

"To enable prompt and speedy action on these diversion proposals, the non-forest lands required to be provided to the Forest Department against the protected forest areas to be diverted will also be made available together," he added.

According to the state government, the Roads and Buildings Department has so far completed or initiated widening works covering nearly 1,000 hectares of land across the state.

Taking into account future road expansion plans and roadside protected forests notified by the Forest Department, the state has made a preliminary estimate that diversion of around 2,000 hectares of forest land may still be required in the coming years.

Officials said that, as part of the compensatory land arrangement, the Roads and Buildings Department has already identified a "land pocket" of around 1,000 hectares of non-forest land at Sheh village in Lakhpat taluka of Kutch district.

The state government also estimated that another 2,000 hectares of non-forest land would be needed in future to ensure that diversion proposals are processed without delay.

The government said the initiative is expected to reduce administrative complications linked to land acquisition and forest clearance procedures.

It added that faster approvals from the Centre would help ensure timely completion of road widening projects while maintaining the requirement of providing an equivalent area of non-forest land elsewhere against diverted forest land.

The state government also said wider roads would improve the speed, safety and convenience of public transport in Gujarat while helping maintain a balance between infrastructure development and environmental conservation.

Gandhinagar, May 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Gujarat's Dang district has emerged as the state's leading strawberry-producing region, with cultivation expanding rapidly under the government's natural farming initiative and farmers earning up to Rs 8 lakh annually per hectare.

According to official data, the area under strawberry cultivation in the tribal district has grown from 20 hectares in 2022-23 to nearly 33 hectares in 2025-26. Production has also witnessed a sharp rise, increasing from 140 metric tonnes in 2022-23 to 196 metric tonnes in 2024-25, and is projected to touch 233 metric tonnes in 2025-26.

Officials attributed the growth to favourable climatic conditions, increasing market demand, and the widespread adoption of chemical-free farming practices. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Dang was declared the country’s first natural farming district, encouraging large-scale participation by local farmers in sustainable agriculture.

The district’s cool climate and sandy-loam soil rich in organic matter are considered ideal for strawberry cultivation. Experts say the crop thrives in well-drained soil with a pH level between 5.5 and 7.0, along with 8 to 12 hours of sunlight required for flowering and fruit development. Day temperatures between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius and night temperatures ranging from 7 to 13 degrees Celsius are considered optimal.

Farmers in Dang are cultivating nine strawberry varieties, including Winter Dawn, Early Winter, Camarosa, Sweet Charlie, Nabila, Nabati, Selva, Belrubi, and Pajero. Among them, Winter Dawn has become the most preferred variety due to its high yield potential between December and February-March.

Large-scale cultivation has expanded across several villages in Ahwa taluka, including Bhurapani, Borigavtha, Galkund, Kotamdar, Malegaon, Sonuniya, and Vanar. In Waghai taluka, strawberry farming has spread to Kanchanpada, Ghodwahal, Murambi, and adjoining villages.

To support farmers, the state horticulture department has been organising training camps and educational tours focused on natural farming and modern cultivation practices. Subsidies ranging from 55 to 75 per cent are also being provided on strawberry saplings and cultivation-related expenses. Farmers are receiving assistance for mulching sheets, plastic covers, crates, packaging material, and farm equipment such as mini tractors, rotavators, cultivators, and trolleys.

Officials said many residents who earlier depended on labour work in industrial units and farms in Maharashtra have now shifted to strawberry farming due to its higher profitability.

Traditional crops such as paddy, nagli, urad, and varai earlier generated limited returns, but strawberry cultivation is now enabling farmers to earn between Rs 7 lakh and Rs 8 lakh annually per hectare.

Initially confined to local markets in Saputara and Ahwa, strawberries grown in Dang are now reaching larger markets in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Bharuch. Officials added that the expansion of cultivation has also created seasonal employment opportunities for local residents.

New Delhi, May 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Severe heatwave conditions continued to intensify across Delhi and several parts of North India on Wednesday, with temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius in many areas of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts in multiple states.

According to the IMD, the ongoing heatwave is likely to persist over the next few days, severely impacting normal life across the region.

In Delhi, scorching heat and hot winds made outdoor movement difficult during the afternoon hours as several areas recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.

Uttar Pradesh remained among the worst-affected states. In Varanasi, residents struggled with extreme heat as the mercury touched 45-46 degrees Celsius. Locals were seen using umbrellas and cotton cloths to shield themselves from the blazing sun.

A local resident told IANS: "There is extreme heat in Varanasi, and the temperature is soaring up to 45-46 degrees Celsius. People are using umbrellas and cotton clothes to cover their heads."

Another resident advised tourists and devotees to avoid venturing out during the afternoon hours.

"Tourists and devotees should avoid going out in the afternoon. Either step out in the evening or in the morning, because there’s a risk of falling sick," the local said.

Hamirpur district is also witnessing severe heatwave conditions, with residents complaining that this year’s summer is harsher than previous years.

"This time, the heat is much more intense than last year. One does not feel like stepping out of the house," a local resident said.

In Noida, authorities have stepped up medical preparedness amid rising cases of heat-related illnesses. A special heat stroke cool room has been established at the district hospital, with separate beds reserved for heat stroke patients and additional doctors deployed on alert duty.

Banda district in Uttar Pradesh also remained in the grip of severe heatwave conditions.

In Rajasthan’s Kota, extreme heat has started affecting both people and livestock. Municipal officials said arrangements such as water sprays and coolers are being provided in gaushalas to protect animals from the scorching temperatures.

Chandigarh also reeled under intense heat. IMD Director Surinder Paul said heatwave-like conditions are expected to continue for at least the next 48 hours.

"Haryana’s Rohtak recorded the highest temperature in the state at 46.9 degrees Celsius, while Punjab’s Faridkot registered 47 degrees Celsius," he said.

New Delhi, May 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) A top doctor of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital's Department of Internal Medicine on Wednesday advised people to avoid direct exposure to the sun and keep themselves hydrated as much as possible, amid the prevailing heatwave conditions in different parts of the country.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi-NCR, along with Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, is expected to face severe heat during the week. The weather agency has issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCR, warning residents of prolonged heatwave-like conditions over the coming days.

Speaking to IANS, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital's senior consultant Dr Atul Kakar said that there are three types of heat-related problems that are being faced by people.

"One is heat exhaustion, where a person feels weak, lethargic, gets a fever, and experiences an overall lack of energy," he said.

He noted that the second one is heat-related cramps, like muscle cramps.

"Finally, the severe form of heat-related complication is heat stroke, which is a medical emergency," the doctor added.

He mentioned that this year, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has so far witnessed complaints of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

"Patients are coming in with complaints of exhaustion, muscle pain, and fever. All these are problems related to excess heat," the doctor said.

D Kakar also prescribes ways to escape the impact of the heatwave.

"Direct exposure to the sun should be as little as possible. The Sun is at its peak from 12 to 3 p.m. If people need to go outdoors during this time, they must cover themselves properly."

"Use an umbrella or something to cover your head. Also, keep taking ORS water, lassi, etc. to keep yourself hydrated. Such measures will help people to protect themselves," he urged.

Further, Dr Kakar advised senior citizens and people facing medical issues like cancer, kidney and heart-related diseases, to protect themselves from direct exposure to the sun at all costs.

"Such patients get severely affected due to the heat. So, they should maintain hydration and keep taking medicines on time," he said.

He also emphasised that any kind of extra medicines should be taken only after a doctor's recommendation.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) In one of the most politically significant decisions taken within days of assuming office, the Cabinet led by Chief Minister, V.D. Satheesan, on Wednesday formally moved to dismantle the controversial Silver Line semi high-speed rail project, announcing the cancellation of all land acquisition notifications issued for the project across Kerala.

Addressing the media after the second Cabinet meeting of his government, CM Satheesan declared that all proceedings related to land takeover for the Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod Silver Line corridor had been denotified and cancelled, marking a dramatic reversal of one of the flagship projects of the previous Left government.

“We had opposed this project from the beginning. The land marked for acquisition has now been denotified,” the Chief Minister said.

In another major relief for thousands who had agitated against the project, CM Satheesan announced that all criminal cases registered against Silver Line protesters would be withdrawn and that the government would approach the judiciary to facilitate the process.

He also said the controversial yellow survey stones placed in properties during the previous government’s survey proceedings would be removed.

Calling Silver Line an environmental disaster in the making, CM Satheesan said his government was committed to development projects that would not adversely affect people or the ecology.

The Cabinet also decided to recommend to the Kerala Public Service Commission that all rank lists scheduled to expire on August 31 be extended till November 30, a move expected to benefit thousands of job aspirants awaiting appointments.

CM Satheesan said the UDF election manifesto would now be circulated among all departments to prepare an implementation road map under the government’s long-term 'Vision 2031' programme.

Alongside this, the government will shortly unveil a 100-day action plan focussing on promises that can be implemented immediately.

The Chief Minister also indicated that the ongoing National Highway construction works across Kerala would be reviewed by the government, while stating that all aspects related to the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) would be examined.

Responding sharply to criticism over his public interactions and identity, CM Satheesan dismissed the controversy surrounding his use of his full name, including ‘Menon’.

“What is wrong if I say my father’s name? I even wanted to mention my mother’s name too. Both my parents passed away before I became an MLA,” he said.

On criticism regarding his meetings with religious and community leaders, CM Satheesan asserted that he would maintain cordial relations with all sections of society, including critics, while making it clear that there would be no compromise on secular values.

He also rejected media speculation regarding delay in portfolio allocation, saying the Cabinet portfolios had been finalised on the very night the government took oath on Monday and were formally submitted to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar after his return to the capital on Wednesday.
