Lucknow, Oct 27 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Uttar Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, is set to promote traditional pottery and terracotta craftsmanship through the 11-day ‘Mati Kala Mahotsav 2026’, beginning on October 28 in Lucknow.

The festival will continue until November 7 at the Khadi Bhawan premises in Dalibagh. The idea is to provide a major platform for traditional artisans to showcase their skills and products.

Organised by the Uttar Pradesh Mati Kala Board, the state-level festival will be held under the theme ‘Mitti se Sanskriti, Sanskriti se Samriddhi’ (Culture from Soil, Prosperity from Culture). The initiative aims to preserve the state’s rich cultural heritage, encourage local craftsmanship and create greater market opportunities for pottery artisans.

The grand exhibition will be inaugurated by Rakesh Sachan, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, Silk Industry, Handloom and Textiles, on Wednesday, October 28.

According to the official announcement, the inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. at the Uttar Pradesh Mati Kala Board premises, Khadi Bhawan, 8-Tilak Marg, Dalibagh, Lucknow. Anil Kumar Sagar, Principal Secretary of the Khadi and Village Industries Department, will also attend the event.

Artisans from various districts of Uttar Pradesh will participate in the festival, displaying a wide range of high-quality pottery and traditional clay products. The exhibition is expected to highlight the creativity, craftsmanship and cultural significance of clay-based art while bringing traditional artisans closer to potential customers.

The festival also reflects the government's efforts to strengthen traditional industries, support rural livelihoods and encourage self-employment among skilled craftspeople. By offering artisans a direct platform to exhibit their creations, the event aims to increase public appreciation for indigenous art and help sustain traditional pottery-making practices.

Shishir, Chief Executive Officer of the Uttar Pradesh Mati Kala Board, has appealed to citizens, art enthusiasts and members of the public to visit the exhibition, explore the products and encourage local artisans.

According to officials, the 11-day celebration is expected to bring together tradition, creativity and economic opportunity, reinforcing the importance of pottery in Uttar Pradesh’s cultural identity.

In the video shared on Instagram, Sonia Gandhi is seen receiving the first copies of her book and sharing sweets with her daughter and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The two were also seen hugging.

The CPP Chairperson did not have a social media account until now. She now has over 10,700 followers and follows her children, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, as well as the Indian National Congress.

The book is set to launch on November 10, while pre-orders have been opened. The memoir is being published globally by Alfred A. Knopf, with HarperCollins India handling its release in the country.

In a post on X, HarperCollins India said that it will publish 'Belonging: A Journey of Love' by Sonia Gandhi. "The long-awaited memoir will be published in India on 10 November 2026," it said.

The publishing house added, "One of the most anticipated political memoirs of our time, 'Belonging' is a dramatic and deeply personal story of love, identity, duty and belonging, and offers a rare insider's view of India's journey."

Earlier, reports surfaced that Penguin India refused to publish the memoir of the senior Congress leader over alleged disagreement over editorial changes, which were later refuted by the publishing house.

New Delhi, Oct 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) Traders in Delhi have expressed concern over the INDIA Bloc's proposed rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, warning that it could disrupt business during the crucial festive season ahead of Diwali. He added that the overall business losses could amount to Rs 10,000 crore if the rally is not postponed.

Speaking to IANS, Chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), Brijesh Goyal said that the traders have written to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, urging them to postpone the rally until after the festival.

The Congress has claimed that around 10 lakh people are expected to attend the rally. Traders, however, fear that the gathering could lead to extensive traffic restrictions, road blockades and disruption of commercial activities across several major markets in the national capital.

Goyal said the rally could severely affect business, particularly in wholesale markets that attract thousands of buyers from outside Delhi every day.

“Business will be heavily impacted because, as reports suggest, 10 lakh people might gather at Ramlila Maidan, whereas its actual capacity is around 50,000,” Goyal said.

Citing a previous gathering at Jantar Mantar on October 10, he said that even an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 people had led to metro station closures, barricading and widespread disruption, creating what he described as a lockdown-like situation across Delhi. According to Goyal, more than 20 major markets were forced to shut down on that occasion.

He warned that a much larger gathering at Ramlila Maidan could affect markets within a five-kilometre radius, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Khari Baoli, Naya Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Daryaganj and Kashmere Gate.

Goyal said, “police barricades and road closures could prevent the three to four lakh outstation buyers who visit Delhi daily from reaching wholesale markets.” He added that the resulting uncertainty and panic could also discourage local customers from visiting commercial areas.

Emphasising the timing of the rally, Goyal said the peak Diwali shopping season begins with Dhanteras, which falls on November 6 this year.

“Diwali’s peak season starts from Dhanteras, which is November 6. If the rally starts four days before the peak season, then it is going to create panic, and it is going to affect businesses,” he said.

The traders have urged Gandhi and Kharge to reschedule the rally until after Diwali, arguing that a delay of just 10 days would allow businesses to operate without disruption during the festive period.

“We have written to LoP Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge requesting them to postpone the rally till Diwali. You can do the rally anytime after Diwali; we are just asking for 10 days more,” Goyal said.

He estimated that if the rally takes place as scheduled, the overall business losses could amount to Rs 10,000 crore.

The proposed rally has thus prompted concerns among traders over the potential economic impact of large-scale political mobilisation during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.

Rane had reportedly made the controversial remarks while addressing a gathering, claiming that Hindus should purchase items only from Hindu-owned shops during festivals. He also allegedly said that Muslim vendors should not be allowed to participate in the Nashik Kumbh Mela.

Speaking to IANS on the matter, RJD MLA Bhai Virendra said, “I know Rane’s father, who was a former Congress leader. "

RJD MLA Bhai Virendra said, “Some people are opportunists who would switch parties at any time to get a position in the cabinet. They don’t have any original thoughts. They only work to spread riots and communal hatred in the country,” Virendra said.

He added that those who incite people through their words also suffer the consequences of the violence caused by them.

Virendra said Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs had fought together for the country's freedom, stressing that India is a secular nation and not a Hindu nation.

He also demanded that Rane withdraw his statement and apologise to the people.

Senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar also criticised Rane, saying that as a minister, he should be aware of the Constitution and remember the oath he had taken.

“Being a minister, he should be aware of the Constitution. He should remember that he took an oath. He is there just to incite animosity between the two religions. This is RSS and BJP’s scheme,” Wadettiwar said.

“Are they caretakers of Hindus? It has become their job to create differences between the two religions,” he added.

Senior Congress leader and former MP Hussain Dalwai said Rane had no role in taking such decisions.

“The Chief Minister is responsible for taking these decisions. He is not. Men like him can only create animosity between the two religions,” Dalwai said.

He also dismissed the possibility of Rane's remarks influencing people's purchasing decisions.

“People are not going to follow this. Only those items will be sold that are of quality and cost-effective. People are not going to see whether the shopkeeper is Hindu or Muslim. Thinking that this statement will have an impact is wrong,” he added.

Rane reportedly claimed that money spent on purchasing goods from Muslims would be used to support extremism.

He further said that Hindus should interact only with other Hindus, adding that when Muslims celebrate religious festivals, Hindus would not be allowed to participate in them.

The remarks have drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who accused Rane of promoting communal divisions and called on him to withdraw his statements.

The BJP has accused Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar of violating traditions for publicity, while the state government has defended its actions, saying it respects the royal family and is willing to address its grievances.

Responding to the controversy, Urban Development Minister and Mysuru District In-charge Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah said the government had not taken the Ambari from the royal family without payment and that arrangements for Dasara were made with the cooperation of both the government and the royal family.

“The Ambari in which the idol of Chamundeshwari is placed is the property of the palace, and we pay for it. Dasara should be conducted properly with the cooperation of the government and the royal family,” he said.

Yathindra said the Forest Department itself took time to decide on the Ambari elephant and clarified that, to his knowledge, the department was not required to inform the royal family about its decision.

He said Pramodadevi had issued a letter to the media without directly approaching the government, even though officials had been in touch with the royal family and had invited its members to share their expectations.

“She could have informed us about her concerns. Apart from one incident during the Vijayadashami celebrations, when Jatti Kalaga was cancelled, there was no major disturbance. Despite this, she has raised complaints. Our officials will speak to her, and we are ready to discuss the matter,” he said.

Yathindra further said the palace board and palace land belonged to the government, but asserted that the administration respected the royal family and would continue to seek its cooperation in conducting Dasara. He assured the grievances would be addressed.

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara also sought to allay the concerns, saying the government had continued the tradition in the manner it had been carried forward after the royal family was removed from its former role in administering the celebrations.

“Nothing new has been attempted by the Chief Minister. There is no reason for her to feel hurt. If she has felt hurt in any way, we will visit her and rectify the situation,” he said.

However, BJP state president and legislator B.Y. Vijayendra criticised Shivakumar, alleging that the Chief Minister had prioritised publicity over respect for Karnataka's cultural traditions.

Vijayendra said the BJP had no objection to the Chief Minister inviting chief ministers of other states to the celebrations. However, he objected to Shivakumar taking his wife to the Jamboo Savari inauguration and the procession, alleging this broke the state's traditions.

Vijayendra also referred to the Bengaluru Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede, which claimed 11 lives, alleging that a publicity battle between former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had contributed to the controversy surrounding the event. He further criticised the absence of photographs of Parameshwara and the district in-charge minister during Dasara, alleging that the government was placing publicity above established conventions.

In a letter released to the media on Sunday, Pramodadevi Wadiyar said information regarding the elephant selected to carry the Ambari had been withheld from the royal family for nearly 45 years until the last moment. She said she had to obtain information herself by contacting the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF).

She questioned the manner in which the government handled the arrangements and alleged that royal family members had faced police high-handedness and ill-treatment. She warned that the royal family could reconsider handing over the Golden Howdah to the government in the future.

Stating that the royal family's Navaratri celebrations attached the highest importance to religious rituals, she said the Dasara celebrations organised by the government had no significance or connection with their traditional observances.

Pramodadevi also said that if the government's actions obstructed their traditions, the royal family could approach the High Court, though it had not done so. She maintained that holding the Ambari procession from the Mysuru Palace to Bannimantap on the occasion of Chamundi Rathotsava in the future would be appropriate.

Ayodhya, Oct 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra has revised the daily schedule for worship, aarti, bhog, rest and darshan of Ram Lalla at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, in view of the seasonal change. The new timings will come into effect from Sunday, November 1, 2026.

According to the temple trust, the temple doors, which currently open at 3.45 a.m. and close at 10.30 p.m., will now open at 4 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.

Sharing the revised schedule on X, the official account of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra said the changes had been made considering the change of seasons and the daily rituals associated with the deity.

Under the new schedule, Mangala Aarti will be performed from 4.30 a.m. to 4.40 a.m., following the opening of the temple doors at 4 a.m. The doors will then remain closed until 6.30 a.m. for abhishek, shringar, dhoop-deep and naivedya.

Shringar Aarti will take place at 6.30 a.m., while darshan for devotees will begin at 7 a.m.

The doors will remain closed briefly from 8 a.m. to 8.10 a.m. for Bal Bhog, after which darshan will continue until 11.30 a.m.

Raj Bhog will be offered from 11.30 a.m. to noon, followed by Raj Bhog Aarti at 12 p.m. Ram Lalla's rest period will be from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m.

After the priests' entry and the offering of light bhog, darshan will resume at 1.35 p.m.

Explaining the rationale behind the revised timings, Rajkumar Das, a member of the Ram Temple's Religious Committee, said the seasonal adjustment was in keeping with the traditions followed at major temples across the country.

"In all the major temples of the country, there are distinct traditions and arrangements for darshan during the summer season and the autumn season. Our Thakur Shri Ram Lalla Sarkar is present in a child form, and no one can truly serve him, as he is the provider and preserver of the entire universe... However, out of parental affection, Thakur Ram Lalla Sarkar is worshipped in his child form, and from that perspective, the morning darshan timing has been extended slightly because in autumn, nights are longer and days are shorter,” he said.

In the afternoon, the temple doors will remain closed from 4 p.m. to 4.10 p.m. for Bal Bhog, with darshan continuing until 6.45 p.m.

Dhoop-deep and naivedya will be performed from 6.45 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by Sandhya Aarti at 7 p.m.

The doors will remain closed from 8 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. and again from 9.15 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. for dhoop-deep and naivedya. Shayan Aarti will be performed at 9.30 p.m., and the temple doors will close for the day at 10 p.m.

Kolkata, Oct 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The iconic Kumartuli Ghat in Kolkata, which was lying in a dilapidated condition for years, has been transformed into a vibrant location, thanks to the coordinated effort of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) Ltd.

SMPA, which is the custodian of the Hooghly riverfront has taken up the restoration of some of the well known ghats in Kolkata that have heritage value.

The plan is to transform these ghats into citizen-centric multipronged cultural centres.

This is part of the Kolkata port's citizen-centric and environment-friendly practice.

SMPA and APSEZ Limited took the assistance of consultants, Anjan Mitra and Saptarshi Mitra, for the phenomenal transformation of the Ghat into an inclusive and sustainable public place.

"The neighbourhood of Kumartuli Ghat is of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity fame and the reference point of SMPA and APSEZ was the UNESCO guideline towards making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by focusing on culture at the heart of a non-discriminatory development policy and providing safe and free accessibility, inclusivity and equality," an SMPA official said.

The aim of the collaboration was to integrate and showcase the river, beliefs, practices, rituals, festivals and daily life.

The aim was to respect and mimic existing architectural language and form with stress on building minimally with relevance.

The creation of a safe, pedestrianised precinct that can provide universal access to the water was also kept in mind.

"We attempted to restore cultural heritage by appropriate intervention in respect of Grade-I monuments, existing temples and a 1905 heritage facade. Care was taken to preserve the indigenous ghat system and extend the same by way of introducing ritual platforms, protecting community access, while designing for hydrology and shifts of water level," the official said.

The initiative also concentrated towards providing contextual community facilities like spaces for artisans, food courts, toilets, change rooms, viewing decks, plazas and pavilions.

The project went on to highlight and empower local art, traditions and culture and create public art installations along the ghat.

A heritage friendly, contextual illumination of the entire intervention and heritage facade was also undertaken.

"The Ghats of Kolkata have been an integral part of the culture of Bengal. They also have distinct cultural and religious significance, as many rituals of Hinduism take place next to the river, at the Ghats. In the last few decades their relevance has declined steadily. The ghats lost their charm because of increasing pollution in the river and its surroundings," the official added.

The residents of Kolkata still share an attachment with the Ghats. This lends them great significance.

These Ghats in Kolkata are all located on the east Bank of the River Hooghly.

They continue to attract people and tourists. With this in mind, SMPA has taken up this "Best Practice" in collaboration with top institutions.

He also said that imbibing nationalist feelings among students from an early age will be an effective medium to prevent divisive and anti-national forces from influencing young minds.

"To combat the anti-national forces from influencing young minds, there is a necessity to imbibe nationalist feelings among the students from a very young age. In order to instill a sense of nationalism among students, opportunities for various cultural practices should be created from the primary levels in schools. Instead of being limited to textbook education, students should be provided with the opportunity to participate in competitions like debates, quizzes and impromptu speeches. I suggest organising such programmes for at least three days every year," the Chief Minister told media persons on Sunday.

According to CM Adhikari, such divisive and anti-national forces, which are trying to weaken the country's democratic structure like Coronavirus, often try to influence young minds.

"That is why I am calling for organising such programs to combat such divisive and anti-national forces," the Chief Minister said.

At the same time, Chief Minister Adhikari also added that there is also a need to provide the school students exposure to different traditional Indian musical instruments like tabla, harmonium santoor, mridangam and tambourine, among others.

"This will help the students to utilise their hidden cultural talents in future. From the next academic year, several changes will be brought in the school syllabus in the state," the Chief Minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, he also accused the previous Left Front and Trinamool Congress governments of neglecting the exercise of encouraging the cultural talents among the school students.

"The heritage and culture of West Bengal have been destroyed first during 34 years of Left rule and then during the 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule. To change this situation, it is necessary to instill a nationalist spirit among students from the primary level of education," the Chief Minister said.

Addressing the 139th episode of his monthly radio programme, 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi said the Ramayan, composed by Maharishi Valmiki thousands of years ago, continued to offer valuable lessons and fresh insights to people even today.

"Tomorrow, October 26, marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki. Though thousands of years have passed, the Ramayan of Maharishi Valmiki ji continues to offer us new insights even today," the Prime Minister said.

Reflecting on the teachings of the epic, PM Modi said, "Through the Ramayan, Maharishi Valmiki has imparted profound life lessons to us… on the one hand, he emphasises the value of persistent effort; on the other, he also highlights the importance of service, compassion, and social harmony."

The Prime Minister further explained how these ideals were embodied in the character of Bhagwan Ram in the Valmiki Ramayan. He referred to Bhagwan Ram's acceptance of Mata Shabari's love and devotion and his friendship with Nishadraj as examples of respect, inclusiveness and the spirit of taking everyone along.

"In the Valmiki Ramayan, the character of Bhagwan Ram serves as a beautiful embodiment of these values – Bhagwan Ram embraced the love and devotion of Mata Shabari… honoured his friendship with Nishadraj. The spirit of taking everyone along -- these ideals continue to guide us even today," PM Modi said.

"This sentiment is also reflected in the grand Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, where shrines dedicated to Maharishi Valmiki, Nishadraj and Mata Shabari as well have been built," he added.

PM Modi also expressed happiness over the naming of Ayodhya's airport after Maharishi Valmiki.

"These initiatives enrich our great tradition -- the very tradition that places the highest value on service, social harmony, and compassion," the Prime Minister said.

Towards the end of the programme, PM Modi extended his greetings to the people ahead of the upcoming festive season. He urged people to celebrate the festivals with their families.

Ahmedabad, Oct 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) More than 30,000 people attended the 'Kankaria Na Garba' festival organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) at Kankaria Lakefront, where differently-abled persons joined other residents in celebrating the traditional Gujarati folk dance.

The event, organised for the first time in this format at the lakefront, aimed to provide differently-based persons an opportunity to participate in cultural activities and celebrate garba alongside other citizens.

Performances featuring differently-abled persons, known as Divyang Garba, and traditional stick garba were among the main attractions.

The festival brought together residents from across the city, with participants taking part in the celebrations.

The initiative was intended to encourage the participation of differently-abled persons in cultural events and allow people to enjoy the traditional dance together.

Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot, State BJP President and MLA Jagdish Vishwakarma, and Minister of State for Urban Development and Urban Housing, Darshana Vaghela, attended the event.

Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, MPs Hasmukh Patel and Dinesh Makwana, Deputy Mayor Anju Shah, Standing Committee Chairman Kamlesh Patel, ruling party leader Jashu Thakor and whip Atul Mishra were also present.

Other MLAs, elected representatives, office-bearers and people participated in the programme.

The event was scheduled from 7:30 p.m. until midnight, with free entry through designated gates at the lakefront.

Ahead of the programme, the civic body had also planned security arrangements, including CCTV surveillance, rescue boats and medical teams.

Kankaria Lake is one of Ahmedabad's historic landmarks.

The lakefront redevelopment project, completed in 2009, transformed the area into a public recreational space with a pedestrian promenade and facilities for visitors.

The AMC organised the event as a shared cultural celebration, bringing together residents and public representatives at the lakefront.

Ahmedabad, Oct 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) More than 700 bookstalls and over 125 publishers are part of the 'Ahmedabad International Book Festival 2026', which opened at the Sabarmati Riverfront on Saturday, as the city seeks to expand its literary and cultural platform with events on reading, writing, science and creativity for children.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the festival, jointly organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the National Book Trust (NBT), along with the ‘CHHAAP Exhibition’ organised by the Union Ministry of Textiles.

The festival will remain open until November 1, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The inauguration also saw the release of the Gujarati edition of 'Sardar Teja Singh Samundri: Life and Legacy', a book on the freedom fighter and pioneer of the Gurdwara Reform Movement.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu was among those present.

Addressing the gathering, Patel said the festival would create opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, literature and culture as Prime Minister Narendra Modi completes 25 years in public service.

"Expanding knowledge, strengthening critical thinking, encouraging creativity and improving citizens’ quality of life are integral to PM Modi’s vision of holistic development," he said.

Patel recalled that PM Modi had launched the ‘Vanche Gujarat’ reading campaign during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister.

"Building on that initiative, the AMC organised the first National Book Fair at the Sabarmati Riverfront in 2012. The event has since expanded into an international festival, further establishing Ahmedabad’s cultural identity," he said.

The Chief Minister said the state government is committed to preserving Gujarat’s cultural heritage, Gujarati language and literature. The 2026-27 state Budget has allocated Rs 182 crore for education, library development, cultural activities and the promotion of Gujarati.

Plans also include establishing libraries named after Bhagwan Birsa Munda in tribal areas and constructing, expanding and modernising libraries at district and taluka levels.

A further Rs 100 crore has been allocated for an advanced 'Namo Central Library' in Gandhinagar.

Emphasising the importance of introducing young people to India’s history and freedom fighters, Patel described the Gujarati edition of the book on Samundri as an opportunity to bring his contribution to a wider readership.

He urged citizens to make books lifelong companions and cultivate knowledge and values to contribute to a developed India through a developed Gujarat.

Sandhu said, "The festival provided a platform for diverse languages, cultures and ideas, connecting readers, authors and young people with new opportunities for learning."

He described Samundri’s life as an example of "social reform", public service and national commitment, highlighting his contribution to the 'Gurdwara Reform Movement', education and the empowerment of women and disadvantaged communities.

"Translation acted as a bridge between languages, allowing history and ideas to reach new audiences," he added.

He also stressed the need to foster reading habits among children through supportive environments in schools, colleges and libraries.

"Achieving the vision of 'Viksit Bharat by 2047' would require knowledgeable, sensitive and innovative citizens alongside technological and economic progress," he said.

Alongside the book festival, the CHHAAP Exhibition showcases traditional artworks by more than 92 artisans from across the country, reinterpreted by students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

The festival programme includes sessions on Gujarati literature, poetry, ghazals, music, book creation, writing, children’s literature and intellectual discussions.

Dome-1 houses a main stage, the Children’s Pavilion and the Authors’ Corner, while Dome 2 will host the Gyan Ganga Writing Workshop and Vichar Manthan.

Special activities for children and students include literary interactions, discussions, poetry recitations and expert guidance.

LEGO, puzzle and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workshops have been planned to encourage scientific thinking and creativity, alongside an art and craft festival.

For the first time, a sculpture workshop will teach children to create works using discarded materials and waste products. An Innovation Wing will showcase ideas, products and technological applications from startups and young entrepreneurs.

Patel also launched a free-pass scheme for senior citizens living in the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) area to make travel easier.

He flagged off buses on two new Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) routes — Thaltej-Shela and Vadaj-Palsana — along with an additional bus, dedicating all three vehicles to public service.

Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot outlined the festival’s programme. AMC officials, office-bearers, and literature enthusiasts attended the event.

Kolkata, Oct 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) With Kojagori Laxmi Puja set to be celebrated on Sunday, prices of fruits, vegetables, and other puja essentials have surged sharply in West Bengal, putting additional financial pressure on middle-class households and forcing many families to scale down the festivities.

The price rise has been reported not only in Kolkata but also in district markets across the state. From fruits for offerings to vegetables used in traditional bhog, consumers are facing significantly higher costs than last year. Many of them have been forced to curtail rituals due to soaring prices.

A bundle of “Dhaner Shish" (Paddy ears) and packets full of grains are two important ingredients for offerings to the “Goddess of Wealth” as per Hindu mythology, on the occasion of Kojagori Laxmi Puja. One piece of Paddy Ears, which cost between Rs 1 and Rs 2 last year, doubled to Rs 5 per piece this year.

The price of a five-gram packet of grain too almost doubled this year to Rs 20. Similarly, a piece of “Chadmala”, which is basically a sacred and symbolic decorative offering on the occasion of Laxmi Kojagori Laxmi Puja, this year, is exorbitantly priced at Rs 25.

Similarly, prices of vegetables like parwal, brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage and tomatoes, the essential ingredients for “bhog” for the puja, are also exorbitantly priced.

While parwal is selling at Rs 80 a kg, the price of one piece of cauliflower ranges between Rs 70 and Rs 80. The price of brinjal per kg has risen from Rs 60 to Rs 100. Similarly, cabbage is selling between Rs 40 and Rs 50 per kg, and tomatoes are being sold at Rs 30 a kg. Similarly, green chillies are exorbitantly priced at Rs 120 a kg.

The only exception is potato, whose price is stable at Rs 15 a kg.

Equally high are the prices of different varieties of fruits, offered as part of the main Puja ritual. Premium varieties of apples are being sold at Rs 200 a kg. The same is the per-kg price of grapes. A pair of premium variety of bananas required for the Puja rituals is being sold at Rs 20.

Among other fruits, pomegranate is selling at Rs 250 a kg. A medium-quality orange costs Rs 15. A pineapple is selling at Rs 80 a piece. Custard apple is being sold at Rs 200 a kg.

Mysuru (Karnataka), Oct 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) Mysuru-Kodagu BJP MP and Mysuru royal scion Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Saturday questioned the presence of a large number of people during the Nandi Dhwaja worship ritual at Mysuru Dasara and called for a clear protocol for the ceremony.

A political controversy erupted in Karnataka during the Mysuru Dasara celebrations after police officers briefly blocked senior Dalit ministers from attending the traditional Nandi Dhwaja Puja.

Speaking on the issue to reporters in Mysuru, Yaduveer said the presence of the Chief Minister and one or two officials would be sufficient for the ritual. He said the participation of a large number of people was not required.

“First, let them clarify what the protocol is. I am not aware of the existence of any such protocol. It is enough if two people accompany the Chief Minister on the occasion. Why should everyone want to go there?” he asked.

He said he had represented the Mysuru royal family at the rituals for the past 12 years at the direction of Rajamata. In earlier years, the Chief Minister and one or two officials would normally attend the rituals, he said.

“This is a programme organised by the government, and it has to decide and proceed accordingly. I feel that having fewer people would be better, as the rituals must be prioritised and conducted appropriately,” he said.

Yaduveer said the Chief Minister's presence was sufficient to represent the entire state and that everyone need not attend the ceremony. He added that the royal family had never insisted on their presence.

Observing that some Dasara programmes had been reformed while others offered considerable scope for improvement, he said lessons should be drawn from this year's celebrations while planning the festival next year.

“We will offer suggestions, and action must also be taken. Merely making allegations would not be appropriate. I will raise these issues at the proper forum,” he said.

He called for the government to clearly define the protocol and announce that it would be followed from next year onwards.

On the participation of the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Telangana in the Dasara celebrations, Yaduveer said their invitation was a good move that brought publicity to the festival. He also said there was nothing wrong with the Chief Ministers offering floral tributes to Goddess Chamundeshwari if they had been invited to do so.

“If they are invited and then not allowed to offer floral tributes, how is that possible? That is why I insist a clear protocol should be in place. Having a framework would be better,” he said.

Asked about the cancellation of the traditional ‘Jatti Kalaga’ event, Yaduveer said his mother would provide clarification on the matter and that further reactions would follow after her statement.

Meanwhile, Rajamata Pramodadevi Wadiyar said she had been concerned about elephant Prashanth, which carried the golden howdah of Goddess Chamundeshwari for the first time during the Mysuru Dasara celebrations.

However, she said the elephant performed well, remained calm throughout the procession and did not cause any trouble. She added that both the elephant and the golden howdah were beautifully decorated. “There had never been any concern earlier, but this time I was worried,” she said.

Held in the divine presence of Mata Sudiksha Ji Maharaj, the Samagam aims to inspire people to recognise the true purpose of human life, strengthen bonds of mutual love and incorporate the values of selfless service and hospitality into their daily lives.

Through spiritual teachings and collective participation, the gathering seeks to encourage people to rise above prejudices and embrace a more compassionate approach towards others.

According to Joginder Sukhija, Secretary of the Sant Nirankari Mission, extensive arrangements have been made across the sprawling 650-acre venue to accommodate the large number of devotees expected to attend the event over four days.

"To ensure the convenience of the devotees, four large community kitchen halls, four cooking areas, and six food distribution zones have been set up. Additionally, the site includes 22 toilet blocks, numerous drinking water stations, and a medical facility," Sukhija told IANS.

He said that more than 100,000 volunteers, known as 'sevadars', from the Sant Nirankari Mission have been deployed at various locations across the venue. The volunteers are working to ensure that the event proceeds smoothly and that devotees receive the necessary assistance throughout the gathering.

"Comprehensive arrangements have been made to manage the movement of devotees, as well as the provision of food, drinking water, and other essential amenities," he stated.

Special attention has also been given to security, emergency response and medical support to deal with the large gathering. Sukhija said that the government has extended assistance by providing ambulances, while the Mission has also deployed its own emergency medical vehicles to strengthen the arrangements at the venue.

"The government has provided 25 ambulances. Furthermore, the Mission has deployed 10 of its own ambulances, including five specialised life-saving ambulances. To address any potential emergencies, 14 fire tenders have also been stationed at various points across the venue," he said.

The extensive arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety and convenience of devotees throughout the four-day programme.

The primary objective of this year's Samagam is to encourage individuals to awaken to the deeper meaning and purpose of their lives.

The grand four-day event is expected to draw devotees from across India as well as from overseas, making it a significant gathering for followers of the Sant Nirankari Mission.

The IABD is a community organisation representing Indian passport holders and the Indian diaspora living in or visiting Bangladesh. It works closely with the High Commission of India, Dhaka, to support welfare initiatives and host cultural festivals.

This adds to the series of cultural events organised in Dhaka during the ongoing Hindu festive season.

Earlier on October 20, on the occasion of Maha Navami, Trivedi visited a Durga Puja Pandal at Uttara Sarbojanin Temple in Dhaka and offered prayers.

"On the auspicious occasion of Maha Navami, High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi visited the Durga Puja Pandal at Uttara Sarbojanin Temple, sharing in the festive spirit and sacred celebrations of Durga Puja," the Indian mission posted on X.

Ayodhya, Oct 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Preparations are in full swing to make 'Deepotsav' in Ayodhya, the holy city of Lord Ram -- a grand and historic occasion.

More than 30 lakh diyas (earthen lamps) will light up the city and its Saryu riverfront as more than 56 ghats will be lit up on the occasion, according to Uttar Pradesh government officials.

The marking of the Saryu ghats is underway after the clean-up drive.

To ensure success of the event, more than 35,000 volunteers from Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University and other affiliate universities have been assigned specific responsibilities.

Speaking about the initiative, the University's Vice-Chancellor Bijendra Singh remarked that Deepotsav is a grand celebration reflecting the radiance of Sanatan culture, faith of the masses, and their collective devotion.

He noted that following the 'Pran Pratishtha' of the idol of Lord Ram in the grand temple, the focus of entire nation and the world has now shifted to Ayodhya's grand Deepotsav.

Ahead of the Deepotsav, the district administration as well as university administration are engaged in extensive preparations for smooth and organised celebration.

Special training is being provided to volunteers across various faculties and departments on the university campus. This includes instructions on arranging earthen lamps (diyas) according to a prescribed grid, managing the oil and wicks, and ensuring that tasks are completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Emphasis is also being placed on ensuring that all arrangements align with the standards set by the Guinness World Records, so that there are no obstacles in achieving the target during the 'Deepotsav' (festival of lamps).

The university administration and the 'Deepotsav' committees are currently finalising the marking of the riverfront ghats, the allocation of lamps, and the arrangements for oil.

Around 35,000 volunteers from 30 degree colleges, 40 intermediate colleges and the university campus will be deployed to arrange and light the diyas. They will be assigned responsibilities ghat-wise and their training is underway, it said.

Volunteers will be registered online and they will also be issued identity cards carrying QR codes, photographs and deployment locations to facilitate verification and prevent duplication.

The radiant glow of these lamps will go a long way in showcasing Ayodhya's cultural heritage, spiritual identity, and the grandeur of its 'Sanatan' (ancient/eternal) traditions before the entire world.

Addressing the media after a state Cabinet meeting, Sarma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would attend the commemorative programme, which will be held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and will be presented to Mangeshkar in recognition of her contribution to Indian music, the Chief Minister announced.

The event is part of the celebrations marking the 100th birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika, one of India's most celebrated cultural icons, whose music, poetry and compositions transcended linguistic and regional boundaries.

Born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya in Assam, Hazarika was widely known as Sudhakantha, or the nightingale, for his distinctive voice and powerful musical expression.

His songs often addressed themes of humanity, social justice, equality, communal harmony and the lives of ordinary people.

Hazarika played a pivotal role in taking Assamese music and culture to a wider national and international audience.

Drawing inspiration from Assamese folk traditions, he created music that resonated with people across India and beyond. His celebrated compositions, including songs reflecting the struggles of the common people and the unity of humanity, continue to hold a special place in India's cultural landscape.

Hazarika was honoured with several prestigious awards during his lifetime, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1992, India's highest recognition in cinema.

He was also conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2012.

In 2019, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

The centenary celebrations are expected to highlight Hazarika's enduring contribution to music, cinema and literature, while reaffirming his legacy as a cultural ambassador of Assam and the Northeast.

The participation of the Prime Minister in the Delhi programme is also expected to bring national prominence to the centenary celebrations of the legendary artiste.

He also said that a revival of India's cultural centres was taking place from north to south and east to west.

Addressing the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan in New Delhi, PM Modi said preserving India's heritage was one of the missions of Swami Chinmayananda, the founder of the Chinmaya Mission.

"There was another mission of Swamiji: the conservation of Indian heritage. You have seen the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. Today, it is a source of inspiration for millions of people visiting from across India and the world," he said.

The Prime Minister cited several examples of India's cultural and spiritual heritage being restored to prominence, including the Kashi Vishwanath Dham, the Ram temple in Ayodhya, and the sacred sites of Kedarnath and Badrinath.

"A revival of India's cultural centres is taking place from north to south and east to west. Whether it is the new look of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham, the grand temple of Lord Shri Ram in Ayodhya, or our sacred sites such as Kedarnath and Badrinath, these places are regaining their prominence," he said.

Referring to Kedarnath, PM Modi said a magnificent statue of Adi Shankaracharya had been installed at the site where the philosopher is believed to have attained his final state of existence.

"If you visited Kedarnath recently, you would have seen a magnificent and divine statue of Adi Shankaracharya installed at the place where he left his mortal body. These sites are now returning to their former grandeur," he said.

PM Modi said that in the past, numerous ancient statues had been stolen from India and taken abroad, where they were sold without adequate intervention.

"You all know that there was a time when many statues were stolen and taken to foreign countries. They were sold, and no one stopped them. In the last 12 years, we have brought back more than 650 stolen ancient statues," he said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India's growing international cultural presence, saying that the country's cultural centres were gaining recognition and that International Yoga Day was connecting people worldwide with India's ancient traditions.

"Just as Swamiji took our religion and philosophy to people across the world, today International Yoga Day is connecting people from all over the world with India. It is connecting people with our ancient and great traditions," he said.

PM Modi said the growing pride in India's heritage and the determination to overcome a colonial mindset reflected the country's progress towards the vision cherished by its sages and freedom fighters.

He also called for collective efforts to address emerging social challenges and unite society against divisive forces.

"We must awaken our citizens to the need for self-reliance. We must connect every citizen with the resolve for a developed India in 2047. We must become more active towards these objectives," he said.

The Prime Minister noted that 2047 would mark 100 years of India's Independence and the centenary of the Chinmaya Mission, saying both milestones presented an opportunity to work together towards shared goals.

Addressing the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan in New Delhi, PM Modi emphasised the need to promote self-reliance and connect every citizen with the vision of a developed India by 2047.

"Times have changed in the past decades. New challenges have arisen for the country. New distortions have emerged in society. Today, the responsibility to resolve them rests with all of us," the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi said he had consistently kept young people at the centre of government policies and expressed happiness over the contributions made by the youth during the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

"In this journey, I have tried to keep youth in focus in all the policies. I am happy that young people have taken up several responsibilities during the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav," he said.

Highlighting an initiative undertaken by young members of the Chinmaya Mission, the Prime Minister said a group of youngsters had travelled extensively across the country and interacted with thousands of young people.

"My young friends have travelled for 300 days, covering 40,000 kilometres. During this journey, they have met more than one lakh young people. I want to thank the entire team for this," he said.

Referring to the Upanishadic expression 'Vayam Amritasya Putrah', meaning 'We are the children of immortality', PM Modi said it did not imply physical immortality but rather the eternal nature of consciousness.

"The meaning of 'Bharat' is someone who is engaged in knowledge and research," he said, highlighting India's longstanding intellectual and spiritual traditions.

Recalling India's 75th year of Independence, PM Modi said he had wanted the milestone to inspire the vision of a developed nation while also highlighting the country's enduring civilisational values.

"When the country marked 75 years of Independence, I thought we should not only make this occasion a platform to inspire the vision of a developed India but also bring to life the spirit of India, which knows how to live by immortal ideas and, drawing on its experience spanning thousands of years, can express concern for humanity across generations," he said.

The Prime Minister said Swami Chinmayananda had devoted his life to raising awareness about the nation's cultural heritage and development.

"Those of us who think about the country's interests should work to make the nation aware and developed. Swami Chinmayananda devoted his entire life to this mantra. With the same devotion with which he spoke about spiritual subjects, he also spoke passionately and extensively about matters concerning the nation, because our nation is the birthplace of our culture and the foundation of our existence," PM Modi said.

He also recalled Swami Chinmayananda's birth centenary and the release of a commemorative coin in his honour in 2015. PM Modi described the spiritual leader's life as a remarkable confluence of knowledge, action and devotion.

Highlighting the government's efforts to reform education, the Prime Minister said the National Education Policy was introduced to meet the needs of a new India.

He said the policy placed importance on India's knowledge traditions, education in the mother tongue, modern science and emerging technologies.

Shivakumar, on Thursday said the world-famous Mysuru Dasara celebrations had been a grand success, earning appreciation from the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Telangana, who attended the festivities. He also announced that a meeting with sugarcane growers and sugar factory owners would be held in Belagavi on October 26, though Union Minister Pralhad Joshi would not be able to attend due to unavoidable reasons.

Speaking to the media near his Bengaluru residence before leaving for Delhi, CM Shivakumar said Union Minister Joshi had suggested that the state government hold the meeting first, following which the Centre would convene a meeting. It can be noted that Joshi represents Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency in North Karnataka.

“The issue of sugarcane growers is not confined to Karnataka but concerns the entire country. A separate meeting will be held with officials at the Central level to discuss the matter and find a solution,” he said.

CM Shivakumar said he would also hold discussions with the Union Ministers concerned on forest land disputes. A decision on the Mahadayi issue could be difficult due to the upcoming elections in Goa, he added.

On the Tungabhadra water issue, he said the state government had requested a meeting with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister to discuss the matter. The meeting would be held either in Andhra Pradesh or in Delhi.

“The Tungabhadra reservoir is facing a severe shortage of water, and farmers’ demand for water is very high. With no rainfall, we need to formulate our next course of action,” he said.

He added that he would meet the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister to submit the state’s demands concerning drought relief. Separate teams had been constituted and officials assigned to discuss these issues, he said.

Asked about his other engagements with Union Ministers, Shivakumar said he had sought an appointment with Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to discuss issues concerning Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). However, Scindia had been busy with Dasara-related engagements, and the meeting would take place once an appointment was available.

“I will return to the state today as the Prime Minister of Poland is scheduled to visit on Friday. I will travel to Delhi on another suitable day to discuss the state's issues,” he said.

Shivakumar said the Jamboo Savari procession held on Wednesday as part of the Mysuru Dasara celebrations had been a grand success.

“The torchlight parade and tableaux showcasing the grandeur of India received widespread appreciation. The Chief Ministers of Kerala and Telangana also attended the Dasara celebrations and expressed their appreciation. They have said they would send cultural troupes from their respective states in the future as well,” he said.

He thanked Energy Minister K.J. George for overseeing the illumination arrangements and other ministers and officials, including Minister for Higher Education Basavaraj Rayareddy, for their contributions to the successful conduct of the festival.

Rayareddy had also extended hospitality to foreign diplomats, he said.

Some ministers had been given exemptions from Dasara-related responsibilities due to the Legislative Council elections, while Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara had participated in the Tumakuru Dasara celebrations, Shivakumar said.

He also thanked the team led by actress and politician Jayamala and producer and actor Rockline Venkatesh from the Kannada film industry, prominent sportspersons, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and central institutions, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), for adding to the grandeur of the celebrations through their tableaux.

“The drone show has created a new record,” he said.

On reports that some ministers had been prevented from performing rituals during the Dasara celebrations, Shivakumar said it was an inadvertent lapse on the part of officials.

“This happened when the ministers were going to offer prayers to the Nandi flag. I personally intervened and facilitated their entry. The Chief Secretary is examining the incident and conducting an enquiry,” he said.

He praised the police personnel and officials for their hard work in ensuring the smooth conduct of the festivities and thanked them for their efforts.

Asked about the mishap reported during the Shivamogga Dasara celebrations, Shivakumar said precautions had been taken in Mysuru because he had anticipated the possibility of such incidents.

It can be noted that the Dasara Jamboo Savari procession in Shivamogga was cut short on Wednesday after Somanna, a 36-year-old elephant carrying the howdah, strayed from its route and became uncontrollable. During the incident, the silver howdah carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari fell to the ground and was damaged. Two cars and three motorcycles were also damaged as the elephant moved through the area. Two other elephants, Sagar and Bahaddur, were also part of the procession.

“We held a meeting under the leadership of Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy and took precautions for Mysuru Dasara. An alternative elephant was considered for carrying the golden howdah, but Prashantha was eventually selected,” he said.

He said the organisers in Shivamogga had been slightly careless and that greater precautions would be taken in the future.

“This is a warning for us. Fortunately, nobody was harmed,” he added.

The controversy erupted after Raihan alleged that the Bikaner House administration ordered the removal of more than 70 photographs from his solo exhibition, 'No Idea Is Final', shortly before it was scheduled to open.

Speaking exclusively to IANS, Raihan Vadra said, "I think what happened was wrong. I fully cooperated with Bikaner House. I read its policy on political content and selected my photographs accordingly. We did not put up political slogans, and there were not many photographs of political leaders,” he said.

He added that initially he was asked to remove some photographs. “I told them we would cooperate. I said they could remove four or five photographs if necessary, provided they gave us a reason,” he said.

“However, we were not given any explanation. Instead, they asked us to remove all 70 photographs. I believe this was wrong,” Raihan told IANS.

He further said that public institutions like Bikaner House have a responsibility to uphold and protect freedom of expression of artists, gallery owners and others. He added that he was told that the photographs were against their policy.

“The photographs are also on my Instagram page. If you look at them, most feature ordinary people. They are at protests, but they are ordinary people. I also suggested that they should make their policies clearer and clarify who would decide what constitutes political content," he said.

“Most art is political, and if you don’t agree then you should not implement such policies. I wasn’t given a specific reason,” he added.

When asked whether he supported the protestors, he said, “Yes, I attended the protest as both a participant and an artist. I support it both as an artist and as an individual.”

The exhibition, 'No Idea Is Final', was previewed on Wednesday and was scheduled to open on Thursday, running until Sunday.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Raihan said the Bikaner House management had asked him to remove most of the artworks from the exhibition.

"The Bikaner House Management forced me to remove the bulk of the artworks displayed in my show 'No Idea Is Final,' which opened this evening at 7 p.m. The photos were of the youth protests in Delhi. Apparently, the content is 'objectionable'. They also directed me to remove two photos of the Tiranga. I refused. I will not take down a picture of the Indian flag,” Vadra said.

Washington, Oct 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) The US Postal Service (USPS) has printed 20 million of its new Diwali Forever stamps, a number an official said was “a little bit on the higher side” because of strong advocacy by the Indian community.

The stamp was unveiled at the Indian Embassy here on Wednesday (local time).

“There was so much advocacy on behalf of the Indian community to create a second stamp. And we just knew that this one was gonna be super popular like the first one, and hence we printed a little bit higher quantities for folks to enjoy,” Sahibani Gambhir, a USPS vice president, told IANS at the ceremony.

The rangoli design is only the second stamp USPS has issued to mark the festival of lights. The first came out in 2016. “The first stamp was wildly popular among the Indian community. We sold so many millions and millions of stamps,” Gambhir said.

“We have printed 20 million Rangoli stamps, and we’re very excited for the Indian community to enjoy these,” the official said, adding that stamp collectors were also expected to buy them.

The ceremonial first-day-of-issue unveiling and reception were held at the Embassy of India in downtown Washington. Gambhir, a USPS vice president, served as the dedicating official.

Speaking at the event, India’s Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra said the festival was “first and foremost” about “the millions of Indian Americans who call this country their home, students, professionals, the artists, families”.

Indian Americans “are the ones who connect to society and hence become what we call as the living bridge of our relationship” between the two countries, Kwatra said, adding that the event “will mark one thread, important thread in that”.

In an interview with IANS, Kwatra said the stamp was a chance “for us to celebrate our cultural strengths, our cultural heritage with the Indian American diaspora and with the larger US society here.”

“This stamp is one of the important threads in our celebration as we go forward into the Diwali festive season,” the Ambassador said.

The stamp features a vibrant rangoli by Houston-based artist Sangita Bhutada, set against a purple background. Bhutada, who has been making rangolis for nearly 30 years, used starch-based coloured powder and coloured sand, the agency said.

Bhutada told IANS that the process began with an email from USPS asking whether she could create a rangoli for a stamp. After signing a contract, she sent design sketches to the agency and then made the rangolis on the floor in different colours. Her photographer friend Bijay Dixit was then contracted to photograph the artwork, she said.

She said she chose vibrant colours such as red and orange because they are significant to Diwali.

Jennifer Arnold designed the stamp, and William J. Gicker served as art director, according to USPS. The stamp is sold in panes of 20 at post offices and online, and as a Forever stamp it will always equal the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.

Diwali, observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and others, marks the triumph of good over evil. Kwatra said the main festival falls on Sunday, November 8.

The processions were filled with the sound of "Abar esho Maa (come back soon, Mother)".

Special arrangements were made to ensure the immersion is held without any untoward incident.

Till 7 p.m. on Wednesday, over 700 Durga idols were immersed in Hooghly river from various ghats in Kolkata and Howrah.

The Kolkata Police made tight security arrangements around the immersion.

The police officials ensured that the organisers who came to perform the immersion do not face unnecessary problems.

Deputy Commissioner (Port) of Kolkata Police, Harikrishna Pai, is in charge of security and surveillance. IPS Akash Megharia and several other senior officers of Kolkata Police were also present.

The police have issued several guidelines to ensure that the water of the Hooghly river is not polluted in any way.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken several measures to ensure smooth removal of the Durga idol after immersion. This service will be available for 24 hours from October 21 to 24.

Arrangements have been made for removal at a total of 27 ghats along the river.

A total of 611 municipal workers from various posts and departments will be on duty.

Arrangements have been made at a total of 27 ghats, including Baje Kadamtala Ghat, Judges Ghat, Doi Ghat, Nimtala Ghat, Ahiritola Ghat, Bichali Ghat, Shobhabazar Ghat, Ratanbabur Ghat, Sarvamangala Ghat and Kumartuli Ghat.

As many as 43 medical teams of KMC will be deployed 24 hours a day.

About seven ambulances will be available to deal with emergencies.

Total eight vector control teams have been deployed to monitor the ghats.

Eight teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will be deployed on the waterway from Ratan Babu Ghat to Bichali Ghat.

Each team will have 35 personnel. Total 56 Civil Defence volunteers have also been deployed. They will be accompanied by seven motorised boats, life jackets and divers.

In addition, 28 water tankers have been kept for the general public and 12 bio-toilets have been arranged by the KMC.

The ghats will have adequate lighting and guidelines and public address system for public awareness.

To ensure smooth management of the clean-up process, coordination is being maintained between the KMC's Parks and Squares, Solid Waste Management, Lighting, Civil and Health departments, as well as the Kolkata Police, Irrigation Department, Disaster Management and Civil Defence Department, NDRF and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority.

The special significance of Durga Puja in traditional Bengali culture is that while Goddess Durga is welcomed as a “mother” on Maha Sasthi, marking the beginning of the festival, Bengali women bid farewell to her as a “daughter” on Vijaya Dashami, which marks its end.

This year, Vijaya Dashami celebrations among women wore a subdued look, primarily in the backdrop of the tragic stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojonin community Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata on the night of October 17, which claimed 19 lives.

Although the crescendo of joy and excitement naturally begins to fade as the state's most awaited and revered festival approaches its final phase, the memory of the 19 individuals killed in the stampede tragedy cast a heavy shadow over the occasion.

This year, while women performed the traditional rituals to bid farewell to Goddess Durga, many chose to refrain from other festivities, such as dancing to the beats of the dhak (traditional drums) and engaging in public merriment. Many were seen praying to Maa Durga to give strength to the bereaved families to rebuild their lives in the days ahead.

In keeping with tradition, women, mostly draped in white sarees with red borders, gathered at various Puja pandals.

Following the rituals, they first covered the face of the Durga idol with a betel leaf, smeared vermilion on her forehead and cheeks, and offered sweetmeats.

After completing the rituals with the idol, the women applied vermilion to each other's foreheads and cheeks (Sindoor Khela).

However, the usual festive enthusiasm associated with this ritual was largely missing this year, as the memory of those who lost their lives in the stampede hung over the celebrations.

Explaining the tradition of viewing Goddess Durga as a "daughter," Sanjukta Sinha, a corporate professional, said that for Bengalis, Devi Durga is not merely a deity who destroys evil, but also a daughter returning home, who must eventually return to her in-laws' abode.

“For us, the four days of Durga Puja represent a daughter visiting her parental home from her in-laws' place. Now, she is returning to her in-laws for another year, and we bid her farewell through these rituals where vermilion, a sacred symbol for married women, plays a central role,” Sinha said.

This year, the golden howdah was placed on elephant Captain Prashanth, who has participated in the Jamboo Savari procession 16 times. However, this is the first time he has led the procession carrying the golden howdah bearing the idol of the presiding deity.

Twelve well-trained elephants are participating in this year's Jamboo Savari. Captain Prashanth is being flanked on either side by the kumki elephants Roopa and Cauvery.

The Jamboo Savari, the grand finale of the Mysuru Dasara festivities, draws lakhs of people to the cultural capital of Karnataka every year.

Jamboo Savari is the grand finale procession of Mysuru Dasara, Karnataka's 10-day state festival on Vijayadashami. It features the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari placed inside a 750 kg golden howdah carried by a caparisoned elephant from the Mysore Palace to Bannimantap.

Decorated elephants, police bands, military cavalry, folk dancers, and colourful government tableaux will lead the procession. The parade concludes at Bannimantap with a traditional Torchlight Parade.

The Vijayadashami procession got underway in the city of palaces on Wednesday morning, marking the grand finale of the 11-day Mysuru Dussehra festivities. Celebrated as 'Nada Habba' (state festival), the Dussehra, or 'Sharan Navaratri', festivities were a grand affair this year, showcasing Karnataka's rich culture and traditions, reminiscent of royal pomp and glory.

The special exhibition also featured beautifully crafted cakes depicting the historical grandeur of Jagmohan Palace, the legacy of Maharani Kempananjammani, who made significant contributions to women's education, and a variety of birds and animals.

The display brought together Karnataka's historical heritage, social contributions and contemporary stories of extraordinary bravery through creative cake art.

The organisers' tribute to Captain Smit Machchhar added a contemporary dimension to the Dasara celebrations, which are traditionally associated with royal heritage, cultural performances and artistic displays.

It can be noted that Captain Smit Machchhar is an Indian commercial pilot for the airline flydubai, who saved 174 passengers on Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv after his co-pilot allegedly stabbed him mid-air and caused a sharp descent.

Despite severe wounds, he opened the cockpit door so passengers and crew could overpower the attacker before the plane was landed safely by two other pilots who had been on the aircraft, in Saudi Arabia.

The co-pilot suddenly stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar, sending the aircraft into a rapid plunge of nearly 14,000 feet in 30 seconds.

Bleeding and pinned on the floor, Captain Smit Machchhar reached up to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers, crew members, and off-duty pilots to restrain the co-pilot.

World leaders—including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and US President Donald Trump—hailed Captain Smit Machchhar as a hero.

Born in Mumbai, Captain Smit Machchhar has over 13 years of commercial aviation experience and more than 9,000 flight hours on Boeing 737 aircraft, having previously flown with SpiceJet.

Following treatment in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Machchhar shared in recovery updates that he is healing well and looking forward to returning to the cockpit.

In Delhi, Sindoor Khela was celebrated with enthusiasm at the Arambagh Puja Samiti pandal. Women also participated in the ritual in Chittaranjan Park, which is known for its vibrant Durga Puja celebrations.

A woman participating in the festivities in Delhi said, “We are all Bengali migrants living here, and we worship Maa Durga together as one family.”

In Kolkata, West Bengal, women celebrated Sindoor Khela at Mudiali Club on Vijaya Dashami. Similar celebrations were held in Birbhum district, where women applied vermilion to one another’s cheeks and prayed for the well-being and protection of their families and loved ones.

In South Tripura, women participated in Sindoor Khela at Durga Puja pandals as preparations for the immersion of Goddess Durga took place. The priest formally completed the immersion rituals, while women carried the Goddess’s sacred pot to the priest’s house as part of the traditional dak dole ceremony.

Sindoor Khela, which translates to “playing with vermilion”, is one of the most recognisable rituals associated with Durga Puja among Bengali Hindu communities. It is observed on Bijoya Dashami, the final day of the festival, when devotees bid farewell to Goddess Durga before her departure.

The ritual traditionally begins with women offering vermilion to the Goddess, applying it to her forehead and feet, and participating in farewell prayers. They then smear sindoor on one another’s foreheads and cheeks, often exchanging sweets and extending wishes for happiness, prosperity and well-being.

Traditionally associated with married Bengali Hindu women, the practice carries religious and cultural significance. Participation, however, varies across communities, with some organisers adopting more inclusive practices.

The ritual is rooted in the belief that Goddess Durga visits her parental home during Durga Puja before returning to her husband, Lord Shiva, at Mount Kailash. The Goddess is welcomed as a daughter and bid farewell with affection, reflecting the familial emotions associated with the festival.

Sindoor Khela thus combines devotion, cultural traditions and the spirit of togetherness, marking an emotional conclusion to Durga Puja. Vijaya Dashami also marks the beginning of Bijoya greetings, when people exchange wishes and seek blessings for happiness and prosperity in the year ahead.

Kolkata, Oct 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) For decades, exchanging sweetmeats with relatives, friends and loved ones has been an integral part of traditional Bengali culture on Vijaya Dashami, the day when idols of Goddess Durga are immersed, marking the end of the four-day Durga Puja festivities.

Sweetmeats also form an essential part of the rituals associated with bidding farewell to “Maa Durga” as “Daughter Durga” on this auspicious occasion had been a part of the traditional Bengali culture for decades.

However, this year, soaring milk and sugar prices have left middle-class Bengali households feeling the pinch during the festive season.

Sweetmeats that were available for as little as Rs 10 to Rs 15 apiece until last year are now being sold at Rs 20 to Rs 30, nearly double their earlier prices.

“Sweetmeat prices usually rise slightly every year on this occasion because of the high demand and the festive spirit. But this year, we have been forced to increase the prices of popular varieties such as Rasgulla and Sandesh because of the exorbitant rise in milk and sugar prices just before Durga Puja,” said Bivu Das, owner of a popular sweetmeat shop in south Kolkata.

Sweetmeat prices had already been raised by Rs 2 to Rs 5 per piece before Durga Puja. However, shopkeepers have increased them further on Wednesday, taking advantage of the traditional surge in demand on Vijaya Dashami.

“On Wednesday, prices have been raised further because of the high demand. Another factor is that we had to increase the daily wages of sweetmeat makers before Durga Puja, keeping in mind their needs amid rising inflation. This has also contributed considerably to the price rise,” said Sashi Ghosh, another sweetmeat shop owner in north Kolkata.

Despite the steep increase in prices, the traditional Bengali fondness for sweetmeats during Vijaya Dashami appears undiminished. Families continue to make arrangements for the customary exchange of sweets, treating the occasion as an opportunity to reconnect with relatives and friends.

“Vijaya Dashami is an occasion when relatives, friends and loved ones come together, setting aside differences and misunderstandings that may have continued throughout the year. Sweetmeats are an integral part of these ‘sweet’ reunions. This year, the rising prices have forced me to exceed my budget for the celebrations, but I have not cut back on the arrangements. After all, I will have to wait another year for this occasion,” said Dolon Sengupta, a homemaker.

Kolkata, Oct 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) The first ever Durga Puja held with the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras turned out to be a great hit, with more than 2,500 people attending over the last four days.

The Durga Puja has been organised by the IIT Madras Bengali community in association with Diganto.

Diganto is an independent student body and cultural club under Sangam -- the institute's cultural club umbrella.

It celebrates Bengali culture, language and festivals on campus.

"The five-day festivities bring the vibrant traditions and cultural spirit of Bengal to the campus, from Sasthi evening to Vijaya Dashami," IIT Madras said in a statement.

From Vedic chanting, Homam and Arati to the participation of IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti, who joined the rituals and chanted chapters from the Durga Saptashati, the celebrations are filled with devotion, cultural heritage and community spirit," it said.

The Puja was organised at the institute's community hall and everybody, including people from the neighbourhood were encouraged to participate.

"It has brought together students, faculty, staff, campus families and visitors from across Chennai, reflecting the inclusive spirit of IIT Madras," the institute said.

A professor said how attention was paid to every detail. There were some who got the opportunity to participate in a Durga Puja for a first time and all the rituals were explained to them.

"It turned out to be a cultural melting point. Locals, as well as people from other regions in the country participated wholeheartedly. That is what made the effort a great success," he added.

Chennai has about 8-10 prominent Durga Pujas organised by the Bengali community.

The scale of the festivities draws people from the state to participate.

Durga Puja is primarily celebrated in a big way in the country's eastern states, comprising West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and the Northeastern states of Assam and Tripura.

There are subtle variations across the states, though the primary theme remains intact.

"By organising the Durga Puja for the first time on campus, the students, teachers, and staff have paved the way for an integration of culture. At the same time, Bengali students and families living on campus get a feel of being at home during this festive occassion," the professor noted.

"The event was not only about religion, but an exchange of culture," he said.

People got to learn of the traditional offerings made to the Goddess, such as the concept of Bhog.

They got to learn about the significance of rituals like Sandhi Puja.

"People got to know how the Goddess is treated as a daughter during Durga Puja. Tomorrow, they will witness her send-off, as she sets off for Lord Shiva's abode in Mt. Kailash with her children," the teacher said.

Agartala, Oct 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) A buffalo and a few goats were sacrificed at the historic Durgabari temple here on Tuesday as part of the Maha Navami rituals of Durga Puja, continuing a century-old religious tradition associated with Tripura's former royal family.

The rituals were conducted under the supervision of the West Tripura district administration, which took precautions to ensure compliance with court directions.

District administration officials said that the animal sacrifice site was covered to prevent public viewing, particularly by children, while hygiene and other prescribed protocols were maintained.

West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar said the tradition had been followed for at least a century and remained deeply rooted in the religious faith of devotees.

"All directions issued by the court have been followed. The premises have been covered, proper hygiene has been maintained, and healthy animals are brought for sacrifice in accordance with the prescribed protocols," Kumar added.

Jayanta Bhattacharjee, the head priest at the temple, said animal sacrifice had been an integral part of the Maha Navami worship for generations.

"We have a century-old tradition of sacrificing animals to Goddess Durga on the day of Maha Navami as part of the worship. The ritual was conducted at a site concealed from public view. In fact, worshipping of Goddess Durga will remain incomplete without animal sacrifice," he added.

The animal sacrifice tradition at temples in Tripura had come under judicial scrutiny in 2019, when a division bench of the Tripura High Court banned animal and bird sacrifices at religious institutions, including the revered Tripura Sundari temple in southern Tripura's Gomati district.

The Supreme Court subsequently stayed the High Court's order following a petition, while imposing certain restrictions on the practice.

The animal sacrifice ritual at Durgabari temple had also been suspended earlier for administrative reasons before resuming two years ago, according to officials.

The temple, associated with Tripura's erstwhile Manikya dynasty, preserves several royal-era religious customs.

The Durga Puja is organised by the West Tripura district administration on behalf of the royal family.

The temple officials said there was no specific vegetarian or non-vegetarian menu for the deity, as offerings depended on the donations and religious practices of devotees.

"We offer Goddess Durga whatever devotees donate or sacrifice at the temple. There is no bar on meat and fish here," he added.

The temple's rituals also reflect the cultural and religious traditions shared by Bengali and tribal communities in Tripura, officials said.

Bhattacharjee said that on Wednesday, the day of Vijaya Dashami, the police would present a guard of honour to Goddess Durga at the temple early in the morning.

The holy pitcher would subsequently be escorted to Ujjayanta Palace, where members of the erstwhile royal family would bid farewell to the deity.

The Maha Navami observances remain an important part of Durga Puja in Tripura, where customs inherited from the former princely state continue alongside celebrations organised by communities across the state.

Held near the magnificent Ujjayanta Palace, the former royal residence, the 150-year-old Durga Puja at Durgabari temple draws thousands of devotees, including visitors from different parts of India and neighbouring Bangladesh.

Historian and writer Panna Lal Roy said that government support for the worship at temples associated with the former royal family had continued across successive Left and non-Left governments.

He said the merger agreement signed in 1949 between Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi, the then regent, and the Indian authorities provided for the continuation of certain royal religious traditions.

"Lord Ram faced so many difficulties in his life, but he never left the path of truth and policy," the Prime Minister said.

He recalled that Lord Ram showed neither joy at gaining the throne nor sorrow at going to the forest, and that he upheld dharma through every crisis.

In the forest, Lord Ram embraced Nishadraj and honoured Mother Shabari, setting standards of compassion, kindness, love and harmony.

Upon returning to Ayodhya, Lord Ram established a Ram Rajya that remains the benchmark of good governance—free of discrimination and ensuring justice and equal opportunity for all.

Particular emphasis has been placed on the vision articulated during the 'Pran Pratishtha' (consecration) ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, PM Modi said.

That vision charts a clear path; moving from 'Ram' (the Divine) to the 'Rashtra' (the Nation), and from the 'Dev' (the Deity) to the 'Desh' (the Country).

Dressed in the traditional attire befitting the Gorakhpeethadhishwar, CM Yogi followed the established customs and traditions of the Gorakhpeeth and performed the worship according to Vedic rites, praying for the well-being of the entire universe.

The special Vijayadashami rituals at the Gorakhpeeth continued for more than two hours.

The special worship began at the Shaktipeeth within the Gorakhnath Temple, where rituals dedicated to the Divine Mother, Adishakti, had been continuing since Pratipada, the first day of Sharadiya Navaratri.

After performing the Vedi Pujan, or worship of the altar, and offering prayers for the welfare of all, the Chief Minister proceeded towards the sanctum sanctorum of the main Guru Gorakhnath temple, accompanied by the temple's head priest, Yogi Kamalnath, and Sanskrit scholars and students from the Sanskrit Vidyapeeth chanting Vedic mantras.

The atmosphere was filled with the resonant sounds of conch shells, damrus, bells, and ceremonial trumpets as the procession made its way towards the main shrine.

Inside the sanctum sanctorum, CM Yogi performed special worship of Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath in accordance with the traditions and rituals of the Nath sect.

He offered various items as part of the religious ceremony, including jawara, or sprouted barley grown at the Shaktipeeth altar. He also performed aarti and offered a chanwar, a ceremonial whisk, as a mark of deep reverence and devotion.

After completing the formal worship of Guru Gorakhnath, the Chief Minister performed special rituals dedicated to the Akhand Jyoti, the perpetual flame, and the idols of all the deities installed within the temple complex.

He also offered prayers at the icons of revered sages of the Nath tradition, the Akhand Dhuna, or perpetual sacred fire, the Yagya-shala, or sacrificial altar hall, and Bheem Sarovar, the sacred pond located within the temple premises.

With folded hands, CM Yogi performed parikrama, or circumambulation, of Mahayogi Gorakhnath and the other deities enshrined in the temple.

He bowed before the statues of his Gurudev, Mahant Avaidyanath Ji Maharaj, his Dada-guru, the late Mahant Digvijaynath Ji Maharaj, and the revered sage Yogiraj Baba Gambhirnath Ji Maharaj, among other spiritual figures.

The sounds of the nagphani, conch shells, drums, bells, damru, turahi, and other ceremonial musical ensembles added to the spiritual atmosphere of the occasion.

As part of the Vijayadashami celebrations at the Gorakhnath Temple, CM Yogi also performed 'Gau puja' (the worship of cows) at the temple's gaushala.

During the ritual, the Chief Minister offered prayers to the cows and served them with deep reverence. He fed them jaggery and affectionately caressed the animals.

In addition to the cow-worship ceremony, CM Yogi also fed grain to the fish in the Bhim Sarovar.
