New Delhi, Aug 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday interacted with the members of the Indian Army contingent, which bagged 16 medals -- eight Gold, seven Silver and one Bronze -- at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Of the total 39 medals -- 13 Gold, 17 Silver and nine Bronze -- clinched by India during the Games, the Indian Defence Forces personnel claimed 18 medals (16 by Indian Army and two by Indian Navy).

In his address, Rajnath Singh commended the strong will power and firm conviction of the Indian Defence Forces for overcoming physical and mental pressure and making the nation proud at an international sporting event.

Terming the achievement as "extraordinary", the Defence Minister asserted that these sportspersons are a source of inspiration to the people, particularly the youth, as they are a "perfect blend of a soldier and a champion".

On women pugilists securing four of the six Gold medals in Boxing, Rajnath Singh said that the feat is a testimony to India's growing Nari Shakti.

The achievement will motivate more girls to pursue the sport and join the defence forces, he added.

The Defence Minister acknowledged the fact that Indian champions are emerging from every corner of the country, highlighting that today the field of sports has been democratised, and it is no longer the exclusive privilege of a select few.

Seema Kaliraman, who won a bronze medal in the women's discus throw in Glasgow, told IANS ahead of meeting the Prime Minister, "Every athlete dreams of having such an experience. Our Prime Minister supports athletes in every possible way and encourages us in all aspects. He also keeps checking on us from time to time and asks how things are going. As soon as we won the medal, he congratulated us as well."

India created history in para-athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Soman Rana clinched the country's first-ever gold medal in the Men's Shot Put F57 event, while compatriot Shubham Juyal completed a memorable one-two by claiming silver on Saturday.

"I am from the Army, and I am very happy to have got the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister today. After winning at the Commonwealth Games, meeting him and receiving his blessings has given me a lot of motivation and encouragement, and I feel very proud," Rana said.

Shubham, meanwhile, added, "Our schedule was also quite busy after the Commonwealth Games, and now I have got the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I think this is a very good opportunity because very few people get the chance to meet the Prime Minister of their country. After such an achievement, the meeting becomes even more special. The handover followed the conclusion of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where the flag was transferred to the Indian delegation during the closing ceremony, marking the official transition to Ahmedabad as host of the 2030 Games.

The flag will remain in Gujarat until the next Commonwealth Games in 2030, symbolising the state's responsibility for staging the event and the formal beginning of preparations.

The Cabinet meeting was attended by Gujarat athletes and para-athletes who represented India at the Glasgow Games, including para-athletes Rakesh Bhatt and Rohit Majgul, while para table tennis player Sonal Patel was also present.

Chief Secretary M.K. Das, Additional Chief Secretaries Ashwini Kumar and M. Thennarasan, and Secretary Rahul Gupta attended the event.

India finished fourth in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games medal standings with 39 medals comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.

Indian para-athletes contributed seven medals, including three gold, two silver and two bronze, ending the country's 20-year wait for a para-athletics podium finish at the Commonwealth Games.

Congratulating athletes from Gujarat and across the country, Deputy CM Sanghavi said that "Team Gujarat" was fully prepared to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.

He added that preparations were progressing under the guidance of Commonwealth Sport, the Indian Olympic Association, the Sports Authority of India and the state's Sports Department.

"From Glasgow to Ahmedabad, the journey to the 2030 Commonwealth Games has officially begun," Sanghavi wrote on social media platform X after returning from Scotland.

He said that meeting Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel with the Commonwealth Games flag became more meaningful as Gujarat's athletes, whose performances brought pride to the state and the country, were present.

"As Ahmedabad prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, the success of these champions reflects the sporting spirit that will define this historic journey," he added.

Addressing the media after his return from Glasgow earlier on Wednesday, Sanghavi said the state government would accelerate preparations for the Games while strengthening sports infrastructure and athlete development.

He noted that the initiative would further advance Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Fit India vision and complement the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' by encouraging fitness and healthy lifestyles among young people.

He also said the Centre's increased investment in sports had helped create modern infrastructure and provide athletes with better training and facilities, allowing stronger performances at international competitions.

Speaking about grassroots sports development, Sanghavi said: "The state government was preparing special plans and programmes to encourage greater participation by local athletes at district sports complexes across Gujarat so that more young sportspersons could benefit from the facilities."

The Commonwealth Games flag, which bears the message "Sport Unites Us All", is traditionally handed over from the current host to the next host during the closing ceremony.

The ceremony signifies the transfer of hosting responsibilities and represents continuity of the Games while promoting unity, friendship, fair play and cooperation among Commonwealth nations.

With the flag now in Gujarat, the state has formally begun its journey towards hosting the centenary Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad in 2030.

The 36-year-old para-athlete began pursuing athletics seriously only in 2023, leaving behind her job as a private school teacher to train full-time. Before making the switch, Shilpa balanced teaching with morning and evening training sessions, a routine she described as physically and mentally demanding.

Training under coach SD Chand at Bengaluru’s Kanteerava Stadium, Shilpa faced financial constraints, and she managed to overcome her biggest hurdle. She had spent around Rs 30,000-40,000 every month on training and nutrition, largely from her own resources.

She shared that the only financial assistance she has received so far was Rs 50,000 from a private sponsor in Srirangapatna when she first competed in 2023.

Shilpa had said her success was the outcome of years of hard work, resilience and unwavering determination despite facing significant financial challenges. The 36-year-old athlete from Mysuru said it was a matter of immense pride to represent Karnataka and India on the international stage and return with a medal for the country.

Setting her sights on the future, Shilpa said her next major objective is to secure a gold medal at the 2028 Paralympic Games.

The medal winners were presented cash awards of Rs 30 lakh for gold, Rs 20 lakh for silver and Rs 10 lakh for bronze.

Interacting with the athletes, Dr. Mandaviya asked the athletes to think beyond their playing careers and become contributors to the next generation of Indian sport. With the revamped Khelo India scheme now backed by a Rs 36,000-crore investment, he encouraged the athletes to consider establishing sports academies and nurturing young talent after retirement.

“Let us not just win a Commonwealth Games medal with the aim to bag a government job. I urge all of you to run sports academies once you retire from your active career,” Dr Mandaviya said, adding that the athletes’ mission should be “India first.”

“While you were playing for the gold in Glasgow, we launched the expanded Khelo India scheme by investing a total of Rs. 36000 Crore, which will take care of greater continued investment in the growth of Indian sports in the coming years,” he added.

Looking ahead to the Asian Games 2026, Dr. Mandaviya urged the athletes to maintain the momentum from their Commonwealth Games campaign. “I want all of you to use this morale boost to win more gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games. Those who have won silver and bronze must strive for gold, while those who have won gold must sustain this level of excellence,” the Hon’ble Minister said.

The Union Minister also urged the athletes to never forget the contribution of their coaches. “None of you should ever forget the contribution of your coaches. It is a symbol of true dedication, and the guidance of a Guru takes you a long way in life,” Dr. Mandaviya added.

India’s boxing contingent returned from Glasgow with seven gold and three silver medals, with the seven gold medals coming from Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg). The three silver medallists were Jadumani Singh (55kg), Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) and Narender Berwal (90+kg). The seven gold medals also marked the best-ever performance by Indian women boxers at the Commonwealth Games.

Indian judo also received special recognition after producing its best-ever Commonwealth Games performance.

India participated in 12 judo events in Glasgow and won four medals — two gold, one silver and one bronze, compared to three medals, with no gold, in 2022. The breakthrough was led by Khelo India athletes Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh, who created history by winning India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medals in judo. Asmita became the first Indian woman judoka to win Commonwealth Games gold, while Harsh became the first Indian male judoka to achieve the feat.

Ankush recovered after losing the opening round on most judges’ scorecards before dominating the remaining two rounds with aggressive combinations and sharp counter-attacks to secure India’s seventh boxing gold medal of the Games.

Reflecting on the victory, Sawant said they had prepared specifically for England and Canada, whom they considered the biggest threats in the competition.

“Ankush came to me when he was 11 years old... We had already planned that only England and Canada would be in the Commonwealth Games, which will give you tough competition, as in the boxing World Cup final, he lost to England. In the first round, he got a cut on his eyebrow and lost. But this time, we made sure the preparation is good," Pradeep told IANS.

"We had planned how to defeat him (Shittu Dimeji), as you can see in CWG final bout; he lost the first round by 5-0. Despite that, he changed the strategy. I talked to him for hours about it, and after that he had to change the plan from round to round. He played accordingly and took the bout in his favour. He followed my strategy and became the champion,” he added.

Sawant said he had expected Ankush to reach the final but believed the semifinal against Canada’s boxer would be equally demanding.

“I knew that Ankush is a champion and will go to the final. But it was a semi-final match against Canada, which was tough. Canada has a good boxer. This bout will be tough. This and the final bout will be tough, so we planned accordingly for that. We talked on the phone. We had a video call. We had an audio call. We prepared accordingly, and the result came in our favour,” he said.

The coach also described Ankush’s triumph as the fulfilment of a personal dream after mentoring him from a young age.

“I am very happy to see Ankush's success. He came to me when he was 10 years old, and I told his mother that I would take care of him. What I was not able to do in 2010, Ankush has done and fulfilled my dream,” he said.

Looking ahead, Sawant shifted his focus to the Asian Games, where he expects a tougher challenge. “Now we are planning for the Asian Games as it is tougher than the Commonwealth Games. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan that are Asian greats, will be there, and it will be difficult to beat them,” he added.

Ankush’s mother recalled her son’s disciplined lifestyle and credited his simple diet and relentless work ethic for his success.

“I watched the match. He was very good. I told him to win the gold medal. He won it, and it feels amazing. Ankush used to eat malpua, milk, curd, anything he could find. He used to eat desi food, which kept him strong. Ankush used to wake up at 4 am, go to running, and then practice. He was focused on sport only and didn’t involve himself in other things.”

His father, Mukesh Kumar, said sport had always been a part of the family and revealed that Ankush initially wanted to pursue kabaddi before eventually choosing boxing.

“There was an environment of sport in the family. I used to play Kabaddi, which helped my son. I used to take care of his diet and practice. Ankush will receive a grand welcome when he comes home. Ankush was first interested in Kabaddi but later shifted to Boxing,” he said.

Hopeless, aimless, and watching his lifelong dream of becoming an Indian Army officer slip away just days before his interview, life seemed to have come to a devastating halt.

Fast forward four years to August 1, 2026, and Juyal is standing tall on the podium at the Commonwealth Games, holding a silver medal around his neck as he refuses to surrender his spirit.

"This is a big achievement because just four years ago, on August 1st, I was in the ICU. I had an above-knee amputation and at that time I was completely hopeless and aimless," Juyal told IANS, reflecting on his incredible journey. "I never thought that after four years I would compete in the Commonwealth Games, let alone win a silver medal."

Before the life-altering accident, Juyal's sole focus was serving in Indian Army. Having already cleared his written examinations, he was merely a week away from his interview when tragedy struck.

Juyal was 26 when he cleared the written exam for the Army Cadet College entry scheme and was on his way to his SSB interview when a serious motorcycle accident changed the course of his life.

"Four years ago, my aim was to become an Army officer," he recalled. "I didn't know what I would do in life after the accident."

The turning point came in 2023 when Juyal entered the Army Paralympic Node. It was there that he met with Subedar Major RK Singh Rawat, the man who would help rewrite his destiny. At the time, Juyal had no background in para-athletics.

"I didn't even know the zero of shot put," Juyal admitted. "But my coach motivated me and taught me everything. The Indian Army, my family, and my friends supported me immensely through it all."

For the newly crowned CWG silver medallist, Glasgow silver is the launchpad for greater glories ahead as he is eyeing clinching a gold at the 2028 Paralympics.

"It's a big journey, but I think it has just started," Juyal added. "There are many more medals to come. And my aim is to win the 2028 LA Paralympics gold medal," he said.

Chitravel dedicated his medal to his family. "I would like to dedicate this silver medal to my family, my coaches, and my friends. My father is my biggest inspiration to do well; he has always encouraged me and reminded me of my potential."

The national record holder, who failed to progress beyond the qualification round At the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo with a best jump of 16.74, soared 16.92m to win the title at the inter-state athletics championships in June and booked his berth for the upcoming Asian Games.

'Next, my focus is on the Asian Games. I won a bronze last time, but this time I’m targeting the gold. Supported by the AFI and SAI, I am heading to the Czech Republic tomorrow for a two-week training camp. After that, we’ll return to India before heading to Japan for the Asian Games," he said.

Chithravel holds the Indian men's triple jump national record of 17.37m, first set in Cuba in 2023. He equalled the mark at the Federation Cup in Kochi last year.

Gulveer clocked 13:24.95 in the final to secure a bronze medal in the Men's 5000m. He had earlier won a silver medal in the Men's 10,000m with a timing of 27:49.78, achieving a historic first for the country in the Commonwealth Games 2026.

In the 5000m final on Saturday, Gulveer finished behind Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang of Kenya, who won gold in 13:23.61, and Australia's Ky Robinson, who claimed the silver medal in 13:24.70.

Gulveer ran a tactical race, racing to the finish line with a brilliant kick in the final lap, moving from equal-fifth position to third and claiming the bronze medal in 13:24.95.

Gulveer, the 28-year-old Armyman from Atrauli in Uttar Pradesh, remained tucked in the eighth position at the end of the first lap (400m), covering the distance in 1:10.6. He picked up a bit of speed in the second 400m, completing it in 1:06.4, moving to the fourth position at the 1000m mark.

He fell back to seventh as he covered 2400m, nearing the halfway stage. He was fifth going into the final lap and then produced a nice sprint to eventually finish third in 13 minutes 24.95 seconds.

Gulveer's running journey began on village roads and farmland trails in his native village as he prepared for recruitment into the Indian Army. After joining The Grenadiers Regiment in 2018, he steadily rose through the ranks of Indian athletics to become the country's premier distance runner.

Gulveer made his international breakthrough with a bronze medal in the 5000m at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships and followed it up with a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games.

He established himself as Asia's leading long-distance runner in 2025 by winning double gold medals in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea.

A prolific record-breaker, Gulveer holds the Indian national records in the 5000m, 10,000m, one mile, and half marathon. In 2025, he became the first Indian to run a sub-4-minute mile, clocking 3:55.63, and the first Indian to complete a half marathon in under 60 minutes with a time of 59:42.

National record holder Praveen Chithravel clinched the silver medal while rising star Selva Prabhu Thirumaran secured bronze in a high-quality final in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday.

Praveen, who had narrowly missed a medal by just three centimetres at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, finally earned his long-awaited podium finish with a best leap of 16.58m, while Selva produced a season's best effort of 16.52m to ensure two Indian flags were raised during the medal ceremony.

Speaking after his son Selva Prabhu won the bronze medal, his father, Thirumaran, said he had expected his son to cross the 17-metre mark in the triple jump final on Saturday. "I am extremely happy that my son has won the bronze medal. I was expecting him to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. But the conditions there were very difficult, so he couldn't perform to his full potential.

"This morning, when I spoke to him, I told him he would cross 17 metres. But the changing weather conditions affected his performance. Still, we are very happy with this medal. Our entire family and relatives are overjoyed. I can't even describe how happy we are," Thirumaran said.

With bronze in his bag, Selva Prabhu and his family are looking forward to the upcoming Asian Games in Japan next month.

Speaking about the upcoming Asian competition, Thirumaran said: "He's only 21 years old and has a bright future ahead. If both the Central and State Governments continue to support him well, he can definitely win an Olympic medal. He will also win the gold medal at the upcoming Asian competition. It's just two months away, and he has already been selected for it. The event will be held in Japan, and I'm confident he'll win gold there."

On the support he has received, he added: "He has received good training and strong support from both the Central and State Governments. Even when he was studying in school, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) supported him well. He stayed in the hostel and studied there until Class 12."

Thirumaran further said, "He is currently studying at the University of Kansas in the United States, where he also trains. He is also associated with JSW, where he continues his training. The government has been supporting him well."

In the NCAA championships held in the United States, he has won four medals in total. Most recently, he won the outdoor gold medal there with a jump of over 17.5 metres."

Speaking about his son's journey, he said: "He has been doing triple jump since the age of 11. He is now 21 years old. He has been passionate about the sport since childhood.

"We come from a farming family, and farming is all we could do to support him. Going forward, we need continued support from the Tamil Nadu Government and the Central Government. First held in Hamilton city of Canada in 1930, the Commonwealth Games will complete a century when they are staged in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi is attending the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Ahmedabad will be officially welcomed as the next host city.

Alongside cultural performances during the closing ceremony, the Commonwealth Games flag and the Host Baton will be formally handed over to representatives of Ahmedabad, signalling the start of the city's hosting journey.

The handover ceremony will also offer audiences in Glasgow their first preview of Ahmedabad 2030 through a programme highlighting India's cultural heritage and Gujarat's identity.

A key feature of the ceremony is the King's Baton Relay, one of the Commonwealth Games' longest-standing traditions.

According to Commonwealth Sport, the relay will travel across all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.

For the first time in the history of the Games, each participating nation and territory will receive its own baton, allowing every destination to customise and decorate it to reflect its culture, heritage and creativity.

Each baton carries part of a message from The UK King Charles III, who places the opening message in the relay.

The baton is then carried by individuals recognised for making positive contributions to society before ultimately reaching the host city ahead of the Games.

The King's Baton Relay was first introduced at the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff.

The Glasgow handover segment has been designed in three parts. The opening act will commemorate the 150th anniversary of 'Vande Mataram'.

This will be followed by a classical Indian 'jugalbandi' featuring sitar maestro Rishabh Rikhiram Sharma and Scottish piper Ross Ainslie, symbolising the connection between Glasgow 2026 and Ahmedabad 2030.

The concluding segment will present a visual journey across India, with a particular focus on Gujarat.

Glasgow 2026 Chief Marketing and Ceremonies Officer Louisa Mahon said the handover "is far more than a ceremonial tradition".

"It would bring together the spirit of two nations on a single stage through a fusion of Indian sitar and Scottish pipes while also celebrating the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram," she noted.

Mahon added that audiences in Glasgow would receive "their first glimpse of what awaits them at the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games".

Director of Ceremonies for Glasgow 2026, Chanda Singh, said the programme had been designed to present "an India that is confident while remaining deeply connected to its traditions".

"Ahmedabad 2030 would mark the centenary of the Commonwealth Games and that the ceremony in Glasgow would serve as the opening chapter of this historic journey," she added.

Her humble remarks came moments after she added a Commonwealth Games gold medal to India’s medal tally, capping off a memorable campaign in Glasgow. Rather than basking in the spotlight, Jaismine insisted that her priority remains improving as an athlete and bringing more laurels to the country.

The gold medallist’s response reflected the humility that has marked her rise in Indian boxing, choosing to celebrate the achievements of fellow sportspersons instead of focusing on personal fame. With her eyes firmly set on future competitions, Jaismine made it clear that sporting excellence—not the silver screen—remains her ultimate goal.

The 24-year-old employed with the Indian Army has added the Commonwealth Games gold to the World Championship gold she won in Liverpool in 2025, two World Boxing Cup titles claimed in the last two years, and the bronze medals she claimed in the 2022 CWG in Birmingham and the Asian Championships in 2021 in Dubai.

Glasgow, Aug 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) India's Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jadumani Singh credited veteran boxer Sarita Devi for shaping his journey as a boxer, saying her constant guidance and unwavering belief played a defining role in his impressive campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

Jadumani settled for silver in the men's 55kg boxing event after losing by unanimous decision to Australia's Jye Dixon in the final on Saturday. The 22-year-old pushed the Australian throughout the three-round contest, but Dixon's disciplined counter-punching and cleaner scoring shots proved decisive.

Reflecting on his journey after the final, Jadumani said Sarita Devi had been a guiding force in his career since his childhood and remained closely involved throughout the Commonwealth Games.

"Sarita Devi ma'am has supported me immensely since my childhood. She has done so much for me, whether it was guiding me about my diet, training, or every other aspect of being an athlete. She speaks to me every day and regularly video calls me. She has always taught me how to approach the sport and what it takes to become a successful boxer," Jadumani told IANS.

He added that Sarita remained closely involved throughout the Games, analysing each of his contests and helping him prepare for the next one.

"During this competition, her support was even more significant. She constantly guided me on how to fight, what to do, and what to avoid. She watched every one of my bouts and gave me valuable feedback after each fight. She kept motivating me by telling me that I would return home with the gold medal. That belief and encouragement meant a lot to me," he added.

Despite narrowly missing the top of the podium, Jadumani said the silver medal has strengthened his confidence ahead of bigger challenges.

"I am happy to have won a medal for India, but of course I wanted the gold. This silver will motivate me to work even harder. My focus now is on improving myself and performing well in the Asian Games and other major international competitions," he said.

Jadumani enjoyed an outstanding run to the final in Glasgow. He opened his campaign with a dominant win over Scotland's Aaron Cullen before defeating Pakistan's Sumama Rehman in the round of 16. He followed it up with convincing victories against Zambia's Mwengo Mwale in the quarter-finals and Namibia's Philip Haoseb in the semi-finals to book his place in the gold medal bout.

In the final, Jadumani started positively and matched Dixon in the opening exchanges before the Australian gradually gained control with his precise counter-attacks. The Indian continued to press until the final bell, but Dixon's tactical discipline earned him the Commonwealth Games title, while Jadumani finished with a memorable silver medal on his Games debut.

Glasgow, Aug 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) India created history in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Soman Rana clinched the country's first-ever gold medal in the Men's Shot Put F57 event, while compatriot Shubham Juyal completed a memorable one-two by claiming silver on Saturday.

It was India's maiden gold medal in the Men's Shot Put F57 at the Commonwealth Games and also the country's first-ever double podium finish in the event.

Soman produced the winning throw of 13.40m on his second attempt, a mark that none of his rivals could surpass during the remainder of the competition. Shubham, meanwhile, saved his best for last, launching the shot to 13.28m with his sixth and final attempt to move into the silver-medal position. Cameroon's Cedric Idriss Lekezo Azamdzi settled for the bronze medal with a best effort of 12.57m.

Soman made an impressive start to the competition with an opening throw of 13.38m before improving to the gold medal-winning 13.40m in his second attempt. His third effort was a foul, while his remaining throws measured 13.14m, 13.17m and 13.11m. Although he could not better his second-round effort, it proved more than enough to secure the top spot on the podium.

Shubham displayed remarkable consistency throughout the final. He opened with 13.08m, followed by 12.42m, before improving to 13.27m in the third round. He then managed 13.16m and 12.88m, before delivering his finest throw of 13.28m on the final attempt to seal the silver medal.

The gold marked another major achievement for Soman Rana, who overcame a career-threatening mine blast injury suffered while serving with the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir in 2006.

After undergoing rehabilitation and taking up para athletics, the two-time Paralympian has emerged as one of India's leading F57 shot putters, winning medals at the Asian Para Games, World Para Athletics Championships and national competitions before adding a historic Commonwealth Games gold to his resume.

For Shubham, the silver medal capped a remarkable journey. The Roorkee-born athlete saw his dream of becoming an Army officer shattered after losing a leg in a motorcycle accident in 2022. Choosing para sport during rehabilitation, he joined the Army's Paralympic Sports Node and rapidly progressed in the F57 category, earning medals at the National Para Athletics Championships, Khelo India Para Games and Indian Open Para Athletics before making his breakthrough on the Commonwealth Games stage.

Glasgow, Aug 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) India’s former Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra clinched the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after producing his season's best effort of 85.83m. However, the mark wasn’t enough to regain the title as Sri Lanka’s R.T. Pathirage delivered a sensational 89.75m throw to claim gold.

It was a maiden Commonwealth Games medal for Yashvir Singh while Chopra grabbed his second medal after the gold at Gold Coast in 2018. He missed the 2022 edition with an injury.

Neeraj opened with 80.97m before improving to 85.83m in his second attempt, which eventually stood as his best throw of the competition. His remaining valid throws measured 81.29m and 80.73m, while his final two attempts were fouls.

India celebrated a double podium finish with Yashvir Singh securing the bronze medal. Yashvir registered a personal best of 85.41m, finishing just 42cm behind Neeraj in a closely fought contest.

Pathirage’s outstanding 89.75m effort proved unbeatable as the Sri Lankan thrower produced the performance of his career to take the Commonwealth title.

With the first two spots sealed by Pathirage and Chopra after the second round, Yashvir Singh upset the rankings by producing his personal best throw of 85.41 in the sixth and final round to jump into medal contention.

But his medal was not sealed yet as former World Champion Anderson Peters of Grenada and Douw Smit of South Africa had an opportunity to overtake him in their final throws. But both failed to come anywhere close to Yashvir's effort.

Anderson Peters finished fourth with 83.88m, followed by Douw Smit (82.88m) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott (82.55m).

Paris Olympics gold medallist Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, who was also the defending champion from Birmingham, failed to make a mark and finished ninth with a below-par performance of 77.41. Nadeem holds the Games record of 90.13m set at Birmingham in 2022.

Rohit Yadav, the third Indian in the javelin throw final, finished seventh with a best throw of 81.56m.

Despite missing out on gold, Neeraj’s silver and Yashvir’s bronze ensured India finished with two medals in one of the marquee events of the athletics programme, while Pathirage’s stunning display emerged as one of the biggest upsets of the Games.

The two medals in javelin throw took India's overall tally to 23 with five gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals. They occupy the 10th spot in the medals table but will definitely move up in the rankings with a big haul expected in the boxing rings as 10 Indian pugilists made it to the finals on Friday.

Glasgow, Aug 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) Tejaswin Shankar made history for India in athletics and the Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Indian to win a medal in Men's Decathlon in a major international multi-sport event at Glasgow on Friday.

The high jumper-turned decathlete, Tejaswin Shankar, also got his name into the record books by becoming the first Indian athlete to win medals in two different disciplines in the Commonwealth Games. He won a bronze medal in men's high jump in the 2022 edition in Birmingham.

The first Indian decathlete to cross the 8,000-point mark, Tejaswin won bronze in Glasgow with 7,976 points in the most gruelling event in the track and field competition.

The reigning Asian Champion in both heptathlon and decathlon, Tejaswin finished behind Victor Lindon of Granada, who ended with a season-best 8096 points, while Canada's Damian Warner took the silver medal with 8036 points.

In the competition spread over many days, the 27-year-old Tejaswin finished 7th in the 100m with a timing of 10.96 seconds (870 pts), cleared 7.82m in the long jump to claim 1015 points and moved to overall third in the standings. He gained 673 points in shot put, soared to 2.15m in high jump for 944 points and bagged 837 points by finishing fifth in the 400m race for a combined total of 4339 at the end of five events and was placed second in the standings.

Tejaswin got 922 points in the 110m hurdles, a modest 674 in discus throw and 704 in pole vault, after which he slipped to fourth in the overall standings. A good performance in the javelin throw pushed him back into the medals bracket, moving him to third, and he confirmed his medal by bagging 704 points in the 1500m race, for a total of 7976 points.

Tejaswin is the Indian national record holder in the decathlon and a graduate of Kansas State University, where he won two NCAA Division I titles in the high jump. Over the course of his career, he has competed successfully in both high jump and combined events at the national and international levels. Tejaswin gained prominence in the high jump after setting the Indian record of 2.29m in 2018. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he won bronze, becoming the first Indian male high jumper to win a medal at the Games. Later, he transitioned his focus to combined events and secured the silver medal in the decathlon at the 2022 Asian Games.

Glasgow, Aug 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) India continued to rule the boxing rings at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain, along with Sakshi and Priya, won their respective semifinals and qualified for the finals, assuring the country at least three more silver medals.

In all, nine Indian boxers have reached the final in their respective weight categories.

Preeti (54kg), Ankush Phangal (80kg), Jaismine (57kg), Arundhati (70kg) and Jadumani Singh (55kg) are the other Indian boxers to have made it to the final in their respective weight divisions, making it a highly successful day for India.

On Friday, Lovlina was the biggest Indian star taking to the ring, and she lived up to her reputation by winning 5-0 against Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki of Tuvalu and reaching the final.

The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist and gold medallist at the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi, Lovlina had received a bye in the first round. She had reached the semifinals without even taking to the rings. Assured of a medal, the 28-year-old boxer from Assam reached the final with a comprehensive win on Friday.

Sakshi added to that success as she defeated Amber-Jane Wall of Canada in a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women's 51kg.

Sakshi dominated the bout and did not allow her opponent many chances, and was adjudged the clear winner by all five judges. The bout was marked 30-27, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27 and 30-25 by the five judges, proving that the Indian boxer had a clear advantage in all three rounds.

Priya then assured India at least a silver medal in the women's 60kg, winning by 5-0 against L.Kings.Wheatley of England in the semifinal.

Sachin (60kg) won by 5-0 against O. Harris-Allan (WAL) and reached the final, maintaining India's 100 per cent record on semifinal day in boxing so far.

In a major result earlier in the day, Arundhati stunned Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medallist R. Eccles to storm into the final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
